and video titles, the stores have about 50,000"props," which is how they refer to theirmerchandise. Included under that one roof is a kid'sspot, where parents can have the youngsters baby-sat, a disc jockey, video screens, a stage for visitingmusicians or whatever, and a fast-food restaurant.Maybe that's why one established retailer is lookingat selling off some of his treasure. (EC: I know oneretailer who isn't worried. He has most of his treaureburied on Prince Edward Island . . . ?)

More Show Boat good news . . . ! GarthDrabinsky's Show Boat is outpacing any musicalmounted on Broadway in several years. The showhas been nominated for seven 1994-95 New YorkOuter Critics Circle Awards, and that's a record. Noother Broadway musical scored as many this season. The awards represents out-of-town newspapers thatcover the Broadway theatre beat, as well as othernational papers and magazines. Among thenominations for the Canadian production are foroutstanding revival of a musical, outstandingchoreography and outstanding director. SunsetBoulevard was nominated for six awards. Drabinskyis putting his Canadian production stamp on thismusical, which will star Diahann Carroll, for aCanadian premiere at the Ford Centre for thePerforming Arts in North York on Oct. 15 of thisyear. The show will succeed Show Boat, whichcloses in June. (EC: There's no business like . . . 9Hatfield's CD ... warm ... fuzzy! Did you seethat weird promotion on the release of Juliana Hatfield'snew CD? It's covered in some kind of hair or rugmaterial. Gross! It reminded one record servicingcompany so much of their boss, they decided not tostock it. (EC: It could be the surprise of the year . . . !)

We're gonna miss you Sally . . . ! It's rarewhen you get to really know a business affairs personin this business. Most are unapproachable at the bestof times. Some companies don't even have them.Anyway, Sally McPherson, an Australian with agenerous helping of personality, has been associatedwith PolyGram's business affairs for the past threeyears. Sally and PolyGram's press office/nationalpromotion guy Gerry Vogel made it a Tuesdaymorning habit to drop by RPM at 8 am on the nose, usually carrying a bagful of donuts and muffins. Itwas a nice way to get the day started. Sally is going

wcrshysInvasion of Canada . . . ? Watch out!The record retail market is about to beinvaded, but this time it's serious. TheTandy Corporation of Fort Worth,Texas is looking at opening IncredibleUniverse mega -mega -BIG stores inCanada, the first couple in theToronto area. Their stores make ourmegastores look like closets, mostof them stretching out to about200,000 square feet, all under one

with Elvira Capreese automated out of existence. It's all over

back home to Sydney in about three weeks, whereshe will continue her profession, hopefully in the

record business. Don't forget to write Sally! (EC:We'll miss the muffins too . . . !)

Decimating radio land . . . ! Sadnews from the radio front again, and it'sbecoming all too frequent. KentMatheson, music director at Moncton'sCFQM-FM, along with five otheremployees of CFQM/CKCW are being

roof. Besides the thousands of recordon May 15. We've built up a warmrelationship with Kent over these past years. He'soutspoken, and he's a proud Canadian. He has beenat the Moncton station for almost 11 years. Someoneof his knowledge of music and the radio businesswould be invaluable with a record company. (EC:He has background, and that's important . . .

Not again Bryan ... ? Well Bryan has anothersong in a movie. I hope he doesn't upset the PrimeMinister's office again and get the caped crusaderall in a flap. (EC: How did that last fiasco ever endup . . . ?) Status quo, but very costly to the taxpayers!

You must watch the Junos ! I promisedmyself that I would let a month go by before Iwatched the Junos, away from the 16,000 whoenjoyed the show in Hamilton. So, I watched whatthe audience saw on the tube, and what a BIG show. What an audience reaction. But I do have onequestion. Why were the shots of the celebrities inthe audience so dark, inky blue and sinister? ShouldCBC be using more expensive video tape? If anyonewants to drop me a line, I'd share with you thereason. (EC: Maybe it was a dark, dark day for theindustry . . . !) Well Elvira, we would like the showto air in the US, and we gotta work on it, showingthat we care!

Midem-Asia on the way . . . ! The Midempeople are looking good for Midem Asia, whichmakes its debut in Hong Kong from May 23 to 25.Jennifer Bier, who is press manager for both Midemand Midem-Asia keeps us abreast of how successfulboth projects are. At last count there wasrepresentation from 26 countries with 141 exhibitors. They are expecting more than 2,500 delegates. Therewill be more than 50 concerts/showcases presentedthroughout the city, including The Hard Rock Cafe.Looking down the list of exhibitors, I wasdisappointed to see there was only one Canadianlisting, and that was the Quebec Cultural bunch.Somehow they left a couple of important names offthe list. Attic president Al Mair is definitely goingand so is Steve Thomson of Backstage Productions. Both of them have been going to Midem for yearsand years. I guess we'll have to start promotingMidem-Asia for next year. I've got to see HongKong before 1997. (EC: See Hong Kong and comehome broke . . .

I wish I'd said that ... ! "Why don't Canadianslike people to succeed, to be the first, to dosomething unusual or original? What had I done toarouse such animosity ... they seemed to resent thefact that a young man could have come to theforefront of an industry so quickly." Yeah! I wish Ihad said that. But it is, in fact, a quote from GarthDrabinsky's autobiography, Closer To The Sun, justrecently published. I can recommend this as a goodread for anyone who loves the entertainment

business. The book is available in bookstores now.

Lunch with Diahann Carroll . . . ! Thereshe was, Diahann Carroll, gently tossed among thegreen salad leaves and crispy root vegetables, lettuce -wrapped salmon with grilled jumbo shrimpand cabernet sauvignon, onion marmalade, celeryroot puree with saute zucchini, raspberry and roastedapricot crisp with granite meringue crunch andpassion fruit coulis, and she was still able to keep astraight face. Toronto's Royal York Hotel is theofficial hotel of Sunset Boulevard, and the UpperCanada Room was the perfect setting for GarthDrabinsky to throw a media luncheon to show offthe shining star of his Canadian production of SunsetBoulevard. By the way, she flew into Toronto, between a Las Vegas gig, and had to be back onstage at 8 pm that same day. (EC: Was that the menuor the supporting cast . . . ?)

FEATURED ARTISTS -by Ron Rogers

Quality backs up latest project from The HawkEd LaBuick, president of Quality Music & Video, and Steve Thomson, president of BackstageProductions International, have announced theworld-wide signing of the latest recording projectfrom Ronnie Hawkins, Let It Rock!, to QualityMusic & Video.

The project consists of a full-lengthCD and video featuring Hawkins' 60thBirthday Bash concert/celebration held atToronto's Massey Hall this past January. Theconcert featured performances by such rockand roll legends as Carl Perkins, Jerry LeeLewis and The Band, along with contemporaryartists Jeff Healey and Lawrence Gowan.

According to LaBuick, his long-timeassociation with Hawkins made the deal withQuality Records a natural.

"I've known Ronnie a long time. Iguess the story goes back to the days when Iworked for Ross Reynolds at GRT and we hadan album released by Ronnie. Ronnie hasworked very hard, he's been Canada'smusician's musician. I think his perseverancewith everything has created an exposure forhim that is as much as any major artist.

"This live performance that happeneddown in Massey Hall, which is something thatSteve and I had talked about for years, cametogether and was something that really workedwell. The musicians were incredible, it was agreat evening, and they captured it on videoand CD."

Along with the audio recording, theconcert was also taped by CFCF-TV, theMontreal affiliate of the CTV Network.LaBuick says that the video and CD will bedistributed, not only throughout Canada, but alsothrough the various Quality outlets world-wide.LaBuick says that, while he was always a bigHawkins fan, he took a wait -and -see attitude beforemaking the agreement with Thomson.

"Steve and I talked about it, and I said`Steve, I'm keen on this project, but I want to seewhat happens at the concert'. But I told him, if it'swhat I think it will be, then I think we'll dosomething. In the beginning, we were basicallytalking about Canada only, and it was our otherdivisions that made their own decisions after seeingthe video and hearing the recording."

For his part, Thomson, who has acted as

Hawkins' manager for many years, admits that therewere skeptics when he first started planning theevent. But he says it was the artists themselves whoshowed the most enthusiasm towards the event, andto Hawkins himself.

"There were a lot of skeptics in thebeginning. They didn't believe we were going to

get Jerry Lee and The Band and Perkins. Althoughthey knew the relationship between all these guystowards Ronnie, they didn't think we'd pull it off.The first two guys I thought of were Perkins andJerry Lee. I went to The Band and talked to Levon, and he was very excited about doing it. Then I talkedto Larry Gowan and Jeff Healey, who are two ofRonnie's favourite artists of the newer generation, and Gowan was in like a dirty shirt."

Thomson indicates that after seeing thevideo again, the element that comes across mostpredominantly is the exuberance and joy of the artistsinvolved.

"The one thing about the show that's greatis that there isn't one unhappy face on that stage.

When you see the video, you'll see what I mean. This show was different from most becauseeverybody wanted to be there. There was a realdevotion towards Ronnie from every one of themand it was magic."

While both the stage and the audience werefilled with a veritable who's -who of the musicindustry in Canada, Thomson said it was unfortunatethat some of the major players had to send theirregrets, including both David Foster and RobbieRobertson, who were engaged in other projects at

the time. But he admitted that the absence ofBob Dylan was particularly curious.

"I did send the necessary invitation to BobDylan's people. I think they failed though, because I know that if Dylan was aware of it,he would have been there. But I don't think hewas even made aware of it."

Hawkins spoke to RPM from his homeoverlooking Stony Lake in northern Ontario, and clearly sounded touched at the attentionand devotion he was receiving from the musicindustry in this country.

"It was exciting, I'm so glad it turned out. With those things, they tend to turn out good, bad or indifferent, and this one happened toclick. The karma was good, Jerry Lee washappy, Carl Perkins was happy, The Band washappy, everybody was happy. It's a miraclewhen you have that many entertainers allworking together, and that's a heavy bunch, they're all pretty temperamental. The older theyget and the longer they last, the moretemperamental they get."

The promotional tour for the video and CDwill take Hawkins to virtually every provincein Canada, and he also indicated that he's"getting ready to play all over the states, allover Europe and Asia. We're going to do it allif I can keep this old body together."

At 60 years old, Hawkins doesn't tour aslong or as hard as he did in the glory years of TheHawks. However with the financial backing ofQuality, this tour, which promises to be lengthy, might also be a little more comfortable then whathe's used to.

"I don't tour much anymore. We do go toEurope once a year. We play those countries overthere, Scandinavia, Germany, Holland, France andEngland. Haven't been to Ireland or Scotland yet,but we're going to go this year. We're in a little bettervenues now, it's not as hard on us. Before we usedto be on the bus all day and then play all night. Thistime the schedule's fixed where I can relax here orthere."

So what's it like to be a rock and roller turned60? Hawkins humorously admits that there are a fewcreaks in the bones in the morning.

"Some journalist asked me once 'what's itreally like to be 60?' I told him that, when I get upin the morning, everything on me is stiff except mypecker."

While the promo tour for this project willkeep the Hawk busy for the next year or so, heindicated that he does have a batch of new songshe's ready to record, as soon as he can find the time.

"We have a few new songs we're gettingready to record. I've got it all lined up in Memphis, and a few other places, when it all fits in. I've gotsome heavy people I'm going to play with, so it'llstir up a little shit, if nothing else."

Among those Hawkins hopes to haveassembled for the live recording are David Foster,

Boy oh Boyz! Thanks to David Lindores, TonySutherland, Steve Coady and the rest of the fine folkat A&M/Island/Motown, I snared a seat on the BusTo Boyz last week. The record company ushered aselect group of media and retail reps, along withseveral radio contest winners, on a chartered bus toBuffalo to catch the performance by Boyz II Men atthe Aud. After waiting through opening acts Subwayand Brandy, the Boyz arrived, to a flourish of lightsand smoke, through a doorway in the centre of theraised -up stage. The band is certainly one of thebiggest acts in America right now, and they sparedno expense in putting on this extravaganza. Thehighlights: a starry background and a cascade ofraindrops (yes, real rain drops) accompanying thenew single The Water Runs; the four of them risingup on a platform from the depths of the stage, eachcarrying a bouquet of roses, which they then tossedto the enthusiastic fans in the front rows as they sangthe hit single, I'll Make Love II You; a U-shapedcatwalk that descended from the ceiling, allowingthe Boyz to race out over top of the audience; andthe finale, End Of The Road (of course), in whichthe 16,000 in attendance sang right along. A prettymemorable show, made even better by the fantasticseats provided by A&M/Motown.

The Stone Roses are back with their follow-upalbum, Second Coming, six years after the releaseof their critically -acclaimed debut effort. The bandis described as one of the few to mix indie rock, pop

After being interviewed for the CBC-TV show Alive, Tommystar Tyley Ross signed some autographs for the program'shost, Joyce Resin, and executive producer Paddy Moore.

David -Clayton Thomas, Ace Cannon ("a great saxplayer of the '50s out of Memphis"), Roland James("if you look at all those old Sun records, you'll seehis name on more of them then any other name")and Sonny Burgess ("the world doesn't know howgood Sonny Burgess is").

One of those new songs, Days Gone By, isalready in the can, and has been for several years. The track will be included as a bonus on the CD,and the video of the song will be included on thevideocassette of the concert.

With the video and CD set to hit retail thefirst week of May, Backstage and Quality are alsoin negotiations to broadcast the concert nationallyon one of the networks. LaBuick indicated thatMuchMusic was ready and willing to pick it up, andThomson noted that CTV will likely present theprogram as well.

Mercury/Polydor distributesThe Solitude Series, introduced to the public in 1981by Dan Gibson and now boasting 34 titles (audioand video), has been picked up for distribution byMercury/Polydor.

The series is a Canadian success story thathas sold more than 1.5 million copies in Canada.Several of the titles have reached gold and platinumstatus.

Gibson has been described as "a sculptor ofnatural sounds." His recording efforts have also beenassembled into one of the world's largest privatedigital libraries. In 1989, this library became thecornerstone for Exploring Nature With Music, aseries that blended nature sounds with music. Twoalbums from this series, Harmony and The Classics, have now exceeded platinum sales in Canada.

Gibson, a photographer, film-maker andsound recordist, has been recognized as "a trueoriginal environmentalist," for which he receivedthe Order of Canada in 1994. His son Gordon, whoinfluenced his father to expand the Solitudes Serieshas been an important addition to the organization.

"We are excited about the prospect ofdealing with Mercury/Polydor," says Solitudespresident Andrew Burgess. "We feel they will beable to maximize the potential of Solitudes andrespond to the rapidly growing demand for the linein traditional music outlets."

In commenting on the pacting DougChappell, president of Mercury/Polydor noted,"Solitudes is a quality label with two very excitingand innovative persons at the helm. I am elated that

Back to the beach forBeaches jazz festivalToronto's trendy Queen Street strip will once againbe the locale for the seventh annual Beaches jazzfestival, scheduled for the week of July 26-30.

The festival began back in 1989 through thework of president and producer Lido Chilelli andthe Beaches community. Since its inception, thefestival has become a fundamental part of the city'ssummer music scene, attracting visitors from acrossCanada and the US. It is one of the few remainingfree jazz festivals, and one of the leading festival'sin promoting homegrown talent.

The Jazz StreetFest will feature more than40 bands performing every evening on selected streetcorners, balconies, patios and rooftops on QueenStreet, between Woodbine Ave. and Neville Park.

Between 6:30 and 10:30 pm from July 26-29, more than 300 artists will play a variety of music, including calypso, Latin, fusion, steel drum and, ofcourse, jazz. On July 29 and 30, from 11 am to 7pm, master of ceremonies and musical director BillKing will welcome a plethora of local andinternational artists to the Alex Christie Bandshellat Kew Gardens.

As well, more than 50 arts and craftsexhibitors will be displaying and selling their waresat Kew Gardens, which is located on the corner ofQueen East and Lee Avenue.

On top of providing top-notch talent, theBeaches Jazz Festival also supports the localcommunity through the sale of t -shirts and othermemoribilia, proceeds of which will go to non-profitorganizations such as Senior Link and the TorontoBeaches Lions Club. Those organizations in turn willprovide assistance for seniors, local groups, homeand school organizations in need. To date, the festivalhas raised more than $100,000 for local charities.

The Solitudesthey chose Mercury/Polydor as their distributor. Thecatalogue they bring to us is a very natural extensionto our existing repertoire, and I expect extremelygood sales to result."

Initial release through the distribution deal

is Nature's Ballet, a 10 -track CD containing musicfrom the ballet, performed in harmony with the songof a warbler, the trickle of a stream, the lonely cryof a loon and other sounds of nature. Included ismusic from Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle,Coppelia, Midsummer's Night Dream and more.

CHARTSby Tim Evans

The battle for #1. Two weeks ago, BruceSpringsteen edged out Annie Lennox for the #1album in Canada. The two reversed spots last week.Once again, the two flip flop as Springsteen edgesback into the top spot. He also has a new entry onthe Hit Tracks chart. Secret Garden debuts at #90.

Hold on just a minute! It seems like Hold Onis the song title of the '90s. Sarah McLachlanrecently had a song with that title. Jamie Walters iscurrently #10 and Alan Frew is #49, both with abullet, with songs featuring that title. There havebeen many artists to record a song with that title, but only two reached the top five. Name the artiststo do it. Hint: one was from 1990 and the other 1982.

A strong #1. Elton John continues to havestrangle hold at #1 on the Hit Tracks chart withBelieve. The song is #1 atradio stations right acrossthe country from C100Halifax and C103Moncton to Mix 99.9Toronto and K-LiteHamilton all the way to C -Fax Victoria. It appears asthough it will have alengthy stay at the top.Adams might be theone. A good bet toeventually knock John'sBelieve out of the #1 slotis Bryan Adam's HaveYou Ever Really Loved AWoman. It bullets to #9 injust its fourth week.Believe became the sixthstraight song to hit #1 afterreaching the top 10 in fourweeks.

The compilationtrend continues.Soundtracks and various -artists albums continue toflood the Albums chart.Leading the way thisweek is the FridaySoundtrack, which debutsat #44. A little furtherdown is the Don JuanDemarco Soundtrack, which enters at #61. TheRockline 2 compilationalso makes its debut thisweek at #66.

Live for Live. In recentweeks, Live has beenshowing some impressivenumbers. The album has

been moving steadily up the chart and currentlyholds the #3 spot. The song Lightening Crashes hasalso been accepted into the mainstream as it is bulletsto #16.

An interesting mix. There appears to be a littleof everything selling at the Sam's store on Bayer'sRoad in Halifax. Here are that store's 10 best-sellingalbums. 1. Montell Jordan 2. Hootie & The Blowfish3. 2 Pac 4. Live 5. Elton John 6. Bad BoysSoundtrack 7. The Rankin Family 8. Strictly Bass9. Annie Lennox 10. The Cranberries.

Could be three. As Jamie Walters heads closerto the top, he could become the third artist to recorda song titled Hold On the crack the top five. Theonly two artists to accomplish that are Santana(1982) and Wilson Phillips (1990).

ROBERT CRAY -Rock/BluesSome Rainy MorningMercury -314 526 867-0A blues guitarist par excellence, Cray hasnaturally (since mainstream radio doesn'tplay blues) never received the kind ofplaudits and recognition that some of hisbetter known contemporaries - such asClapton or the late Stevie Ray Vaughan -have in the past ten years. Certainly, Crayhas always been recognized by the peoplethat matter most, his peers. But he's neverstayed in the limelight, even after the strongsuccess of his 1986 breakthrough album,Strong Persuader. This latest effort offers upa more stripped down version of Cray andhis band, perhaps back closer to what trueblues is meant to be. If anything, Cray'sguitar virtuosity has improved dramaticallysince his earlier work, with his playingstanding out even more in the strippeddown production style of this album.Highlight tracks include Tell The Landlord,Steppin' Out, Little Big Boy, Jealous Love andHoldin' On. -RR

MONTELL JORDAN -R8B/Hip-HopThis Is How We Do ItPMP Records -314 527 179-QThe story goes that if you live in southcentral LA, you either get into music orsports or the church, or you fall into thegangs. As Jordan points out, "I could tellyou the stories about playing ball aroundthe corner while The Bloods and The Cripswere shooting because I've been there."Jordan's musical career began via thechurch, and although he was touched by themusic of everyone from Stevie Wonder toSammy Davis Jr., he actually headed off tocollege to study law. Thankfully, for PMPRecords most of all, he fell in with hip -hopproducer Chi-Luv, who educated him onmixing and deejaying. What's nice aboutJordan is that he's able to combine the hardcore attitude of rap and hip -hop with thesweeter sounds of soul and R&B. He's beencompared to Teddy Pendergrass, and withhis smooth, gospel-esque style, such acomparison isn't too far out of left field. Thefirst single from this record, the title track, has already been a smash in the US.Whether or not it follows here in Canada isanyone's guess, considering what aformidable territory Canada has alwaysbeen for R&B/rap/hip-hop artists. But if thetiming is right, Jordan could be the next bigstar out of the states with the initials MJ. -RR

ALBUM PICKKENNY COLMANDreamscapeSony Special Products -66159-H"Kenny, it's you, me and Tony Bennett. We're fraternity, a special breed. We're the last ofthe saloon singers." When you can get that kind of endorsement from Frank Sinatra, you know that you do indeed belong to a special fraternity. Colman, born in the northend of Winnipeg and now living inVancouver, broke into the business when itwas almost a closed shop. The Colmanstory is the stuff books are written aboutand movies made. His unique vocaltechnique, his projection, his timing, andphrasing gained him audiences around theworld. Here he continues his time -wornapproach to pseudo jazz and meaty, make -sense ballads with an effervescence andvocal power that indicates his command ofthis music form. He eases into thesebeautiful old works like they were writtenfor him. The comfort range is awesome, tosay the least. When Joanna Loved Me,written by Bob Wells and Jack Segal isexceptional, as is Hoagy Carmichael'sStardust and The Days Of Wine And Roses, written by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini. That's Toots Thielmans on harmonica on both tracks. Beer baron Freddy Heineken likedColman's style and financed this album, a pretty costly project. Colman fronts the LondonPhilharmonic Orchestra with arrangements by Dick Bakker and Johnny Mandel. He alsoperforms four songs written by Heineken and various writers, and they fit beautifullyinto his styling. Also includes Herman Hupfeld's As Time Goes By and Autumn Leaves, another great Mercer penning. -WG

over 18 other finalists. If they're able toplease radio as well as they were able tomove the critics, this band should make itsmark on the indie music scene in Canada. While the group was formed in Sarnia, theoriginal trio of guitarist/vocalist Jeff Getty, bassist Dean Hibma and drummer Greg Leeeventually drifted to Texas to find some gigs. After returning to their native land, the grouppicked up lead singer Bil Eldridge, formerlywith Ten Seconds Over Tokyo. The music isone of those indelible mixes of somewhatoptimistic lyrical depth with some hard

edged, blues -tinged melodies. The musicdoesn't dance around its target, diving rightinto some guitar -encrusted, free -flowingtracks that are embellished by Eldridge'spained yet heart -felt vocals. Getty is aferocious guitar player, who gets right to themeat of the action, displaying a hunger andvirtuosity not normally found in an indieband. The group has obviously honed itscrafted in the clubs, and should providesome fodder for rock radio. -RR

DAN GIBSON - InstrumentalNature's BalletSolitudes/Mercury/Polydor-116-QDon Gibson's recorded works have beensomewhat closeted since they wereintroduced in 1981, but nonetheless the 34titles in the Solitudes series, have sold morethan 1.5 million copies. Most of the salescame from novelty and book shops. Now,having signed to Mercury/Polydor (seeseparate piece), Gibson and his son Gordon, will benefit from a much larger audience. This is the music to relax with, probably asclose to nature as possible. The Gibsonshave, with this release, used a variety ofacoustic instruments to create classicalballet with an unusual elegance. Producedby Gordon Gibson with music arranged, orchestrated and conducted by HowardBaer, the nature sounds of a trickling stream, the call of a loon and a warbler and othergentle sounds of nature, are backed by suchworks as Swan Lake, Les Sylphides, Giselle,Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Midsummer'sNight Dream and more. The album wasrecorded and mixed by Carmon Barry atEmmanuel Productions in Scarborough,Ontario. -WG

MARY BETH SIPPIN - CountryBack In My Home TownRising Star -111358 (Roto Noto)Back home in Newtown, one local scribeaffectionately refers to Sippin as"Connecticut's latest country lady." This"lady", has powerful pipes and anextraordinary handle on the interpretation

of lyrics. The song material isn't too shabbyeither. Love Me Tonite, a duet with WebBurrell, who produced the track and co -wrote the song with Penny Rubenfield, isone of the better tracks. The vocal passionis exceptional. There's a little bit of hurtin'stuff as well, with David Weltman's penningof When You Can't Say Goodbye. Sippinchanges vocal gears with the ease of aprofessional, impacting with a rock edgewhere necessary and displaying a

tenderness when needed. Also key is LoveMe Tonite, written by Wayne Gamache, StanProsco and Web Burrell, released as a singlelast year, and John Elliot's Somebody'sPrayin', which was a gospel hit for RickySkaggs. Vocally, Sippin has no barriers. Thecountry/gospel roots are fairly obvious, thecrossover potential is real. Terry produced, with the exception of Back In My Hometown, which should be a future focus track, LoveMe Tonite and It Doesn't Matter Who's ToBlame, which he co -produced withGamache. Recorded at Michael TerryStudios in Trumbull, Connecticut. TheCanadian connection is Roto Noto Recordsin Hamilton. -WG

LAURA SMITH -Pop/folkBetween The Earth And My SoulAtlantica-50235-FThe comparisons are obvious -Joni Mitchellperhaps, maybe even a little JoanArmatrading or Tracey Chapman. But listena little closer, because this Halifax -basedsinger/songwriter really has something freshand new to say. nothing. Smith has endured the clubs, opening for the likes of John Prine andRichard Thompson, and performing atfestivals from Seattle to Edmonton toDawson City. But she's never wavered fromher sweet soul sound, a sound that makesyou want to edge just a little closer to thestereo, to hear the words, to grasp just atouch of the potent emotions filteringthrough the speakers. It likely didn't take agreat deal of effort for Atlantica Music toscoop up this artist in a flash. The music isreally beautiful, with that rare mix ofendearing lyrics and subtly seductivemelody. To hear it just once, you'll certainlywant to hear it again. Now that Atlantica istied in with EMI, Smith should be able tograb a few adds at. AC radio - a few mightbe all she needs. Produced by Smith andDavid W. Hillier, and recorded at SoundproRecording in Dartmouth and MobileRecording at St. Mary's University. -RR

COUNTRYbiographical information. The CD itself fits into amulti -foldout folder with a bunch of reviews fromall the big guys in country radio. The album releasecomes on the heels of Herndon's fast-moving chartsingle, What Mattered Most, which bullets into the#16 slot this week. The single was written by GaryBurr and Vince Melamed. The album was producedby Doug Johnson, with the exception of Heart HalfEmpty, a very key track, which Johnson producedwith Ed Seay. This is a duet with Stephanie Bentley.

Joel Feeney has the big gainer this week withWhat Kind Of Man, which jumps up to #48 from#76 after only the third week on the chart. Feeneywrote the song with Chris Farren, who produced theMCA album with Hayward Parrott. The trackqualifies as two -parts Cancon (AL).

Daryle Singletaryn a new Giant artist, has themost added single this week with I'm Living Up ToHer Lowest Expectations. The single enters the chartat #79. Written by the team of McDill and Rocco, the track was taken from his self -titled album, whichwas produced by Randy Travis, James Stroud andDavid Malloy. Travis was apparently impressed with

Singletary's demo tape of Old Pair Of Shoes, whichhe brought to the attention of the Giant label.Singletary has been included on the Travis tour, which is now underway.

Jim Matt enters the chart at #89 with his debutsingle Better Place To Live. The single, a Mattoriginal, is included on his Little Dog album, AllMy Wild Oats. The album was produced by LittleDog president Pete Anderson and Dusty Wakemanand recorded at Anderson's Mad Dog studios inVenice California. The single qualifies as two partsCancon (MAL).

Come Together America Salutes The Beatles, might be a bit misleading. This is not a rock 'n rollalbum, although the rock edge is certainly there. AsRPM reviewer Ron Rogers wrote in his critique lastweek, "today's new country sound is basically justa '90s version of rock and roll," and this album fitsin perfectly. It might be stretching it a bit with DavidBall's version of I'll Follow The Sun, or RandyTravis with his version of Nowhere Man, the countryroots sound is there. Willie Nelson, as usual, is thehero here with One After, and Shenandoah gets iton the country track with Can't Buy Me Love.
