Saturday 17th December 2011Midlands 2 West (South)
Old Laurentian RFC v Berkswell & Balsall RFC plus
OLs under 9s & 10s v B&B under 9s & 10s
Programme£3
Welcome to Fenley Field Welcome to Fenley Field for today’s league game in Midlands 2 West (South).
Today we are delighted to welcome Berkswell and Balsall RFC to Fenley Field, both their 1st XV and their mini rugby players and supporters. We hope that they all enjoy their day with us.
We are also pleased to welcome today’s match referee, Sam Kincaid of the Warwickshire Society.
Today our under 9 and under 10 mini rugby teams will take on their counterparts from Berkswell and Balsall in exhibition matches before the 1st XVs kick off their league game. Please make an effort to leave the comfort of the clubhouse and get out to watch them – you’ll be seeing the future of our club in action! Our mini section just grows and grows – last Sunday they reached 190 registered members and they started the season with less than 100. You’ll find more about the minis elsewhere in this programme.
Today the OLRFC Mini Rugby Section are sponsoring the match ball for our league game – many thanks to all 190 of you!
After our last match programme went to press we learned the identity of our semi‐final opponents in the Intermediate Cup in the Midlands. We will travel to play Stoke on Trent on Saturday February 11th. It’s a tough one as they have a 100% league record, already lead Midlands 2 West (North) by 12 points – and last week beat the second placed club by 41‐3. But, as the old cliché goes, there are never any easy games when you reach this stage of any competition! Look out for more details closer to the date.
What a great game it was two weeks ago! We finally put our indifferent league form behind us when depriving Barkers Butts of their 100% record. Our games trail Newbold’s by a week – three weeks ago they lost to Barkers – the following week we beat the same team. Last week Bold lost to Berkswell and Balsall – today…. … who knows, but the omens are good!

Berkswell & Balsall RFC
Berkswell & Balsall Rugby Football Club was founded in 1981 by Les and Steve Edwards and from modest beginnings the club has progressed to fielding three sides on a regular basis, as well as an occasional Veterans side.
In the early days Berkswell & Balsall did not have their own ground but played at Heart of England School. After much fund raising, the club bought its current grounds at Honiley Road in Meer End, just outside Balsall Common, in 1998; and after an unsuccessful lottery application in 2000, members of the club raised enough funds and donated much expertise to put up the current club house, all in the space of a single weekend ‐ an achievement of which the Club is justifiably proud.
BBRFC are currently at their highest ever position in the league structure, having been promoted to this level following an excellent campaign in 2006/07. They came up with undefeated champions Droitwich, enjoyed a good first season and have comfortably held their position since.
This season is, however, their best ever in Midlands 2 and they arrive at Fenley Field with just one loss against their name, inflicted by league leaders Barkers Butts back at the beginning of October. It may be that their highly impressive form owes more than a little to the fact that they are suffering a 15 point deduction, carried over from last season, which has stung them into action! Whatever the reason, from always being a difficult side to beat they have become nigh impossible to beat!
Today sees a fascinating meeting between the league’s most miserly defence – Bs have conceded just 81 points in 10 games so far – and the league’s highest scorers – OLs have 301 points to their credit. By about 3.50 this afternoon we’ll know the outcome of that clash!

1st XV Match Report Midlands 2 West (South) – Saturday 10th December
Banbury 20 ‐ Old Laurentians 43 Recent form suggested that OLs would be too strong for a Banbury side struggling for consistency and so it proved to be, the Bilton side running in seven tries to move up to 3rd place in the league.
This win was based on another outstanding display by OL’s pack, reinforced by the return of Stuart Eborall to the back row after a three month injury layoff. With Carl Adams and Ben O’Riordan in prime form, this trio were too hot for Banbury to handle, building on the dominance of the front five to set up a comprehensive win.
OLs were into their stride early but sixteen minutes had gone before Adams set off on a storming run through the middle to find Ben Anderson up in support, the lock forward embarking on a galloping 40 metre run to the line to score a fine try, his first in OL’s colours.
Banbury pulled one back when number 8 Simon Brand somehow filched OL’s possession at the back of a ruck to go over from close in and level the scores at 5‐5.
OLs were guilty of frittering chances away with some less than precise handling but put this right on thirty two minutes when they mounted an attack from deep, Stuart Eborall slipping a sweet pass out of the tackle to Simon Bayliss for the wing to chip ahead and outstrip the defence to touch down for 10‐5.
As half time approached, Andy Coleman put a great kick down the touchline and chased it hard, Greg Loydall made a telling tackle and skipper Paul Willis was up to secure the ball and plunge over for the try. Jon Bean converted and OLs took a comfortable 17‐5 lead into the half time break.
If there was to be a criticism aimed at OLs, it was that they were trying to be too ambitious before they had established good field position and committed defenders. They put this right in the opening minute of the second half when the pack, with Adams and Chris le Poidevin to the fore, drove deep into Banbury territory before releasing quick ball for the backs to send Bayliss in for his second try, lifting the lead to 22‐5.
Banbury’s Mike Smith got three points back with a penalty, but OL’s forwards were now well on top of their opposite numbers, taking scrums against the head and driving powerfully in the loose. With fifteen second half minutes gone great combination between O’Riordan and Adams gave the latter a sight of the line and the number 8 went over for a try, converted by Bean for 29‐8.
Five minutes later, after another Banbury feed had been stolen at the scrum, Adams picked up from the base to send scrum half Luke Harris in for a try which Bean converted beautifully to lift the score to 36‐8.
As the game entered its final ten minutes, Banbury mounted a spirited rear‐guard action and fly half Jed Boyle, aided by a rare missed tackle, ghosted in for a try that was improved by Smith for 36‐15.
OL’s response was immediate and a strong run by replacement Grant Inch was held just short. Quickly recycled ball gave centre Matt Miller the chance to weave through under the posts, converting his own try for 43‐15.
Refusing to lie down, Banbury again took play back into OL’s territory to send wing Carl Daniels over for a try, the missed conversion heralding the final whistle.

RFU Changes Earlier this week, the RFU took the first major step towards putting its house in order, and rebuilding a bruised reputation, by naming its new Chief Executive. He is Ian Ritchie, and will join the RFU from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (Wimbledon to you and me!) where he has been CEO for the last six years. In addition he has held a number of non‐executive positions with other major sporting bodies, in particular the Football League, so appears to come with the right blend of experience. In addition, the RFU board has appointed Miles Templeman to lead a steering group to consider and report back to the Board on the recommendations of the Slaughter & May Report covering the current corporate governance and structures of the Union. From what has been heard of their recommendations, if all, or most, of them were implemented it would mean clubs (especially community clubs) losing ownership of the game and other important benefits. The RFU have, however, pledged to consult in detail through all levels of the game before any measures are introduced; and Warwickshire RFU have already announced that a meeting of clubs will be held (date as yet undecided) as part of this process.

Old Laurentians 27 – Barkers Butts 6
League leaders Barkers Butts had carried all before them so far this season, winning all eight games played before they visited Fenley Field on Saturday. But on their ninth outing they came across an OL’s side in irresistible mood and at last playing somewhere near their true potential in the league and the outcome was a comprehensive win for the home side.
Barkers started the game confidently and fly half Tom Stokes kicked a penalty for an early lead. But OLs pack had already begun to exert pressure and after a Barkers’ scrum was disrupted they got the ball away slowly and an attempted chip kick in midfield was charged down by Iain Wallis, his centre partner Danny Murch seizing the rebound to run in from thirty metres for a try, Jon Bean converting for a 7‐6 lead after thirteen minutes.
This was to be the last contribution by Murch who was forced to retire from the action after aggravating an earlier injury, bringing Scott Wiles on at full back with Greg Loydall moving up to outside centre.
After Barkers’ scrum half Robert Fisher went on a dangerous run that was just held, OLs conceded a penalty that was popped over by Stokes to bring the score back to 7‐6. But the balance of power was beginning to swing towards OLs and after a series of sweeping attacks, Bean put over a penalty to increase the margin to 10‐6 after twenty five minutes.
Half time arrived with OLs holding a slender lead and Barkers still very much in contention. But OLs dealt a serious blow to their chances straight from the second half re‐start, Bean’s beautifully struck kick giving the chasers every chance to reclaim possession, which they did. The ball was moved quickly away from the contact area and Greg Loydall ran with pace and power to shrug off tackles and go over, his try converted by Bean for 17‐6.
OLs increased the tempo and exerted a stranglehold from which Barkers struggled to escape for the remainder of the game. The home pack was winning the forward battle and aggressive defence by the whole team was stifling Barkers attempts to respond.
Another of this season’s debutants made his entry after twenty five minutes when prop Aaron Metcalfe came on for Leigh Fisher, who exited to a warm round of applause for the conspicuous contribution he had made.
With thirty minutes gone, OLs earned the reward for more pressure when Bean kicked a fine penalty from near touch and a 20‐6 lead. Two minutes later, another powerful drive by OL’s pack set up the situation from which Wallis was able to carve through the remnants of Barkers’ defence to touch down for a try that was improved by Bean for the final points of the game.
An excellent win owed everything to a fine 15 man effort, with nothing owed to individual brilliance. The early loss of Danny Murch, one of the team’s main attacking assets, could have affected their performance but was overcome with no noticeable effect.

A message from Dan Volkman On behalf of Old Laurentian Mini Rugby, I'd like to thank you for your support today. I would also like to welcome the parents and players from Berkswell & Balsall Mini & Junior Rugby who have made the trip to Fenley Field for today's matches. We have just recently played Berkswell and my U10s came out on the losing end ‐ hopefully we can reverse that result today!
The OLRFC Minis is halfway through its third year of existence, having been set up in September 2008 by a handful of members from within the club who volunteered every Sunday morning to help out with the original start‐up and running of the section. Without really knowing the kind of response we would get, we circulated flyers to local schools and had articles included in the Rugby Advertiser to help get the word out.
At our first training session 20 kids showed up, and thus began our rapid ascent to one of the most competitive minis sides in Rugby. Soon we had parents volunteering to help coach and organise the running of the section, and we were off. At the end of our first year our size had tripled to over 60 children, and by the end of the second year we saw that number nearly double again to just under 100 children. This year has come as a bit of a pleasant surprise to us as we now have no less than 190 children registered in only 6 age groups, making us the largest minis section in Rugby. With this explosive growth we have gone from strength to strength, with even more parents getting involved with coaching and the committee. Our current development plans have us gaining an age group a year, with our current crop of U10s making their debut in a few years as the first Old Laurentian Colts side in nearly 20 years. We also have a thriving girls' tag rugby team for ages 8‐14 that have just hosted their second visiting team, playing competitive matches against much older girls that have many more years' experience.
I feel one of the strengths of our section is that we truly put the children's development both as players and as teammates to the fore. A large part of this has been our close association with the senior club as a whole, and the way new parents and players have been welcomed in to the club. Also, all the money raised either through annual subscriptions, training subs, or money raised by the kitchen facilities goes straight back to buying training equipment and playing kit for the kids, keeping the cost to the parents as low as possible. We don't want any child to be excluded from playing rugby for financial reasons.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers ‐ from kitchen helpers to coaches who have made the continuing success of this section possible. I would also like to give a special thanks to Matthew and Sue Pritchard, whose organisation and drive have played a huge part in making this section the success it is today.
I hope you enjoy today's matches, which I'm sure will be played in the spirit of the game we all love to play and watch.

The Midlands Two Scene The last time I wrote these notes, Barkers Butts were the only side with an unblemished record and we all know where that went! But they got right back on track last week when beating the much improved Silhillians team, the latter taking a losing bonus point from an 18‐12 scoreline. Our bonus point win at Banbury meant that we went back above Sils to third place, now on the same points total as Newbold and with a better points difference – but they hold on to second place by virtue of having won more games than OLs. Newbold suffered a surprisingly large reverse at Berkswell & Balsall, who really are the dark horses this season, their only loss coming at the hands of Barkers at the beginning of October. A glance at the league table opposite will tell you that they would be leading it were it not for the 15 points deduction they started the season with. Leamington and Droitwich are maintaining contact with the leading group, although not entirely convincingly (Leam’s 54‐17 trouncing of Kidderminster last week apart.) Droitwich shaded the meeting between the two on November 19th, getting home by just 19‐18. The five teams at the bottom, currently led by Banbury, are now well adrift of the rest and will be scrapping to stay up at season’s end. As well as having accumulated the most bonus points (10), we have the highest ‘points for’ total in the league so far – but we are conceding too many points for a team with title aspirations, witness the 12 we gave away in the closing minutes at Banbury last week. Such carelessness could be crucial in what is clearly going to be a real scrap at the top of the table over the rest of the season!
Local Club News Rugby Lions continue to dominate National 3 Midlands and are now really turning up the heat. After some relatively unconvincing wins, they came good in style when thrashing the then second placed Dudley Kingswinford by the surprisingly large margin of 68‐12. Then third bottom Broadstreet put up what was obviously sterner resistance at Webb Ellis Road last Saturday before succumbing by 48‐14. In Midlands 1 West, Kenilworth are staging a mini revival and now with four wins to their name are climbing away from the basement. Rooted to the bottom are the two teams promoted from our current league this season, Bedworth and Dunlop. The latter’s meteoric rise has come shuddering to a halt and last week they suffered an 88‐7 reversal at Old Halesonians (over whom we did the ‘double’ last season!). Sutton Coldfield lead the way with maximum points from their 13 games so far, ahead of Bournville by 7 points. Coming closer to home, there are widely differing fortunes being enjoyed by Lutterworth and Long Buckby in Midlands 2 East (South). Lutterworth are now in second spot, seven points clear of Bugbrooke in third – and, of course, they have reached the Midlands semi‐final of the Intermediate Cup. By contrast, Buckby are rock bottom, with just one win and 7 points to their name. In the northern division of that league, Newark still boast an unblemished record and are 9 points clear at the top. In Midlands 3 East (S), Rugby St Andrews are now in third place after seven wins on the bounce – a great recovery after losing their first three! In Midlands 4, Rugby Welsh’s travails continue, just one off the bottom of the table and only two wins from nine.
