DRIVING EVENTS CORNERA few words from Executive VP Rick Touton

1st Gear: Open Road Drives. The Chapters 2011 OpenRoad Drives Calendar is developing into one of our best.Back by popular demand, for a third consecutive year willbe the mid-summer overnight Devils Highway Drive alongthe AZ/NM state line. The fun and challenging Gimmickand Poker Rally will be back in the fall for a second con-secutive year. Additionally we are planning three, Drive Eat Drive events, like our fun Mormon Lake Lodge Driveof 2009. Details and dates will be posted soon on thenew Chapter website which is currently under construc-tion and should be up and running by the end of January.

2nd Gear: Auto X. On Saturday December 11 the Chap-ter co-hosted its rst Auto X with PCA AZ. The Duel inthe Desert (D.I.T.D.)was held on the east parking lotof Tempe Diablo Stadium. RR Chapter Member, ShaneStaples, did a wonderful job of chairing the D.I.T. D.Committee and coordinating with PCA AZ. The Auto Xveterans at PCA provided all the equipment and knowl-edge to design the course and manage the event. ThePCA instructors were readily available and willingly an-swered questions and provided ride along instruction forall the participants. The course was well designed andproved to be fun, fast and challenging. Many thanks

are due to PCA for expertly managing the Event andwelcoming the nine BMW drivers with open arms. Thefastest 6 drivers were all within 1 second of each otherand two BMW Drivers placed in the top four. Great Job!

3rd Gear: Driving School. With Phoenix Inter-national Raceway (PIR) closed for constructionfrom February through November, 20011 it isproving to be a challenging year to secure a de-sirable date at an Arizona Track to host a HighPerformance Driving School. Essentially thethree tracks at Firebird International RacewayComplex (FIR) are the only three local tracksavailable. National Auto Sport Association(NASA), Pro Auto Sport Association (PASA),Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the lo-

cal chapters of the performance marquee carclubs are all competing for dates at FIR. Wehope to be able to announce a school date soon

4th Gear: Club Racing. Like the drivingschools our club race calendar will be inu-enced by the closure of PIR. We hope to teamup with a local track group and or a CaliforniaChapter for at least one club race this year

Until next time, have a great time driving!

    Goodspeed Performance Lab

The BMW 4.4 L is arguably one of the nest motors BMW has ever built. This motor hasfound its way into brands such as the Morgan sports cars and Land Rovers line of supe-rior SUVs. It has a long smooth power band and gobs of low end torque that seems tolast forever, making it the perfect power plant for a midsized sedan or SUV. However, ifsome power is good, more power is always better. For this reason several mainstreamsupercharger companies have created forced induction kits for this engine in many dif-ferent applications However, no one has been able to successfully create a productionintercooler system due to its engine management system and tight space constraints.

This is where we come in!! We werebrought a 2001 model year 540 6 speedcar which had been tted with a ESS Tun-ing supercharger Kit. Unfortunately theowner had also had a horrendous attemptat a custom air to air intercooler kit fabri-cated along with a nice Mobil One bottlecatch can. As some may know, a long in-take track between the mass air ow sen-

sor and the throttle body will cause a delayin the ability for the ECU to compensatefor the information that the MAF has re-ceived. As one might imagine this callsfor a great deal of driveability and start-ing issues along with a great deal of clear-ance and packaging problems. This carwas an overall mess, to say it was hackedtogether would be an understatement.

We were up to the challenge after strippingit clean of its custom modications andgetting it back to stock. We started overwith some help from ESS Tuning supplyingus with fresh new s/c kit parts that hadbeen destroyed from the previous attempt. Then some time was spent with severaldifferent designs ideas for how to engineersuch a setup in such a conned space. Wechose an integrated water to air systemutilizing a very large heat exchanger and

    ...more fromGoodspeed Performance Lab

powerful pump, thus ensuring that ourspace conned intercooler which had tobe relatively small would always have afresh supply of chilled water. This alsomeant no off the shelf parts were goingto do the job. Yep it all had to be fab-ricated from scratch. A true water to airintercooler core was ordered as was aheat exchanger. Next, some templates

where mocked up and eventually CADdrawings of the end tanks and brack-ets where ready for the water jet. A bitof welding and some carefully select-ed premolded coolant hose and presto!

The result was pure success!! Droppingair intake temperatures over 35 @102degrees ambient temperatures! This al-lowed us to raise the boost to over 8 PSI

and achieve over 435 crank horsepower. While we do not offer this in a kit, wehave made all the patterns to custom in-stall a similar system for any one with a4.4 L BMW that has had any of the similarsupercharger kits installed and is lookingto add a intercooler system! For more in-formation on this build or to inquire abouthaving Goodspeed build your 4.4l super-charged vehicle intecooled, give us a call.

During the close of each year and the be-ginning of the next, we all have the oppor-tunity to reect on what has passed andhope for what is to come. At the close ofthis year, Im sitting here in the family roomon a cold winter day (for Arizona, that is..),

watching my sweetheart work on her per-sonal resolutions for 2011 as she sits infront of the warming re in the replace.Who would have ever thought I would en- joy a replace in Arizona so much? Itscaused me to ponder somewhat about theactivities of the club in 2010 and all thechanges well have this next year. Someof the activities worked out better than ex-pected and some did not. As a board we

always gather each December to plan outactivities for the year to come. For 2011,weve planned more driving events thanever before and more non-driving eventsthan ever before. DUEL IN THE DESERTby Shane Staples, Jr.

As we reect on what we did, or should havedone, this past year, Id like to share oneof my highlights from 2010: the Roadrun-ner Chapters rst autocross with PorscheClub of America, Arizona Region (PCA). Ata meeting back in July, the Chapter de-cided to endeavor into holding its rstautocross event to help reinvigorate itsmission- to enhance the BMW experiencethrough camaraderie, education and so-cial responsibility. The event did just that!

Now, some of you might be asking your-self, what in the hell is autocross? Au-tocross is a timed driving event where a

driver navigates through a course, usu-ally a large, unobstructed parking lot, marked by a series of trafc cones andchalk lines, trying to beat his/her com-petitors time. Among other things, au-tocross educates participants on how toenhance their driving skills. Most partic-ipants compete in their daily drivers asthe potential for damaging their pride andjoy is relatively low. As one of the less ex-pensive ways to get into competitive driv-

ing, you will nd that an autocross eventwas the stepping stone for many peo-ples participation in other driving events!

Our event started early on a Saturdaymorning at Tempe Diablo Stadiums eastparking lot after hurdling some technicaldifculties with a fence stopping us fromgetting into the pit area. While seasonedmembers of PCA laid out the course, par-ticipants checked-in and had their ve-hicles inspected. In attendance were avariety of marques, including, among oth-ers, a highly-modied 977 Turbo, a race-prepped 986 Boxster, two race-prepped964 Carerras, a Lotus Elise, a MitsubishiEvo, a C6 Corvette, an E36/8 M Coupe, araced-prepped E36 M3, and a handful ofstock and modied E46 M3s- 38 cars in all.

Once the course was setup, a mandatory

drivers meeting was held to go over theevent and safety rules, and provide an op-portunity for drivers to walk the course. As the weather began to warm up to abalmy 70 degrees, the event was under-way. Depending on the run group, we wereeither competing, working a corner, or rest-ing. Since this was my rst ever drivingevent and I didnt have an opportunity towalk the course, a driving instructor with

PCA offered to take me on a few laps inhis track ready 911 during my rest! Af-ter discussing the layout and how to bestapproach each section of the course, I puton my helmet and strapped myself into aRecaro race seat that hugged every inchof my body. As we pulled up to the headof the grids staging line waiting for driverahead of us to nish his run, my heart be-gan to pound with anticipation of what wasto come. Ready!, the grid tenant yelled

He then lowered his hand and off we went!I struggle to explain how incredible theacceleration and braking felt turn afterturn, but it was truly a surreal experience

Working a corner and resting (whilenot riding along) proved to be equallyas fun as competing because everyonehad an opportunity to share experiencesand participate in some friendly banter. The competition was erce, but BMW tookthe day with the fastest lap of 38.484 sec-onds (the average was 43.933 seconds) in aslightly modied E46 M3, shod in 18 FikseMach Vs wrapped with 295/30 A6 Hoosiers(Wow!). If you werent able to make it out,add participating in an autocross event toyour To Do list for the coming year, andstay tuned for other joint events with PCA

This month I want to tell you about an un-expected treasure I found in the East Valley.

(Its worth the drive!)My sister introduced me to CroshawsGourmet Pies (6731 E Brown Road inMesa) and I cant get enough of it.Now this isnt just a superb pie place, but a wonderful sandwich shop as well.

I ordered the chicken salad sandwich. Youcan also get sandwich with soup or sandwich with salad. I was sharing withmy daughter, so we got a whole sand-wich and she got soup and I got salad.

I have to say that it was probably the bestchicken sandwich this side of the Mississip-pi. It had just the right seasoning and thebread it was on was outstanding. My sal-ad was crisp and avorful with great ranchdressing. I stole a taste of my daughtersbroccoli cheese soup, and it was also divine.

For dessert, you guessed it ..we had apiece of pie. Now, Ive tried several of theirpies. I can tell you the pumpkin is deli-cious, the lemon cheesecake is my favor-ite, and the lemon meringue is scrumptious. You just cant nd a pie that isnt great.

Their secret? Well, one of them is the ten-der, aky pie crust that seems to melt inyour mouth. The other is fresh ingredientsand the best darn recipes you ever tasted.

I can highly recommend Croshaws GourmetPies for both a delicious lunch and dessert. Andwhile youre there, why dont you get a wholepie to take home? Yum. Its worth the drive.
