How do I verify an advertised business opportunity is legitimate? Many business opportunities are advertised especially during hard economic times and some-times these are scams rather than legitimate businesses. Often these so called opportunities tar-get people who have lost jobs or had a cut in pay, those who can least afford to lose out to a scam artist. Beware of those that promise large returns for little effort or that seem “too good to be true”. Do thorough research into the company offering the opportunity. How long has the com-pany been in existence? Who are the owners? What have the results been for others who have invested in the business opportunity? How will you earn money from the business opportunity? Check with the attorney general’s office in Oregon at http://www.doj.state.or.us/index.shtml or call (503) 378-4400 to find out if any complaints have been registered against the company or owners. Also, check in the state the company is registered in to see if any complaints have been filed against them there. One more place to check is the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) web-site for fraud alerts at www.ftc.gov. Always talk to several current operators of the business op-portunity to find out the potential risks and rewards. If you feel pressured to purchase right now or lose out, walk away, it is probably a scam. The Federal Trade Commission publishes several documents on business opportunities that might be helpful to review. These are available on the FTC website. Information is available about investigations and lawsuits that have been filed. It is often helpful to hire an attorney to help review documentation provided by the company offering the business opportunity. Spend-ing a few hundred dollars to hire a legal expert may save you thousands in an investment that will never pay off. Always look at the potential cash flow that can be generated by the business opportunity. Is it enough to cover all startup costs, operating costs and a reasonable salary for the time you will invest? Verify current owners of the business opportunity are actually creating the cash flow promised by the promoter. Franchisors and business opportunities generally must file disclosure documents in a state to op-erate there. Verify that the proper registrations have been filed and review those filings thor-oughly. If you feel you have been the victim of a business opportunity scam, contact the Oregon Attorney General’s office at the number listed previously, the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission to report a complaint. The SBDC is a partnership of the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network, the

Oregon Business Development Department and Southwestern Oregon Community College. Arlene M. Soto has been the Director of the

Southwestern Small Business Development Center since July 2007. To ask a question call 541-756-6445, e-mail [email protected], or

The Oregon Legislature’s 2016 “Short” session begins on February 1st and runs a maximum of 35 days.

The 2016 Oregon State Chamber of Commerce (OSCC) Legislative Priorities represents the legislative priorities of Oregon’s

local business communities as represented by the 70 local Chambers of Commerce of the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce.

The OSCC is organized to give a voice to the local business communities throughout Oregon in support of policies that enable

business growth, job growth and income growth in each of our local communities.

“The LAT and the Executive Committee have recommended to the BACC board to adopt theses priorities at its February 3rd

Board meeting to guide our efforts during this session. “

The Members of the OSCC are united in support of:

HB 4012 appropriates lottery bond dollars for water storage infrastructure.

HB 4055 addresses Oregon’s transportation infrastructure needs.

HB 4077 reforms liability for ski areas.

HB 4078 creates a new Transit Expansion Fund to fund growing local transit needs.

HB 4084 allows for local tax incentive programs for brownfield cleanup.

SB 1565 allows local government to grant tax exemptions for up to $1mm in new industrial equipment.

SB 1581 makes paid sick leave compliance more reasonable for local business

The Members of the OSCC are united in opposition to:

SB 1532 / SB 1592 / HB 4054 increases the state’s minimum wage to a level that small business can’t afford.

SB 1532 / SB 1592 / HB 4054 allows local government to pass higher minimum wage rates.

SB 1574 / HB 4068 imposes a new ‘Cap and Trade’ tax system for utilities and local manufacturers.

SB 1587 imposes new pay records requirements, private right of action, and new BOLI powers.

HB 4136 increases insurance costs for critical health care providers.

Additionally there will be a lot of discussion and work on the issue of a new minimum wage.

LAT will keep you posted in regards to these matters. You can attend our meetings, 3rd Tuesday of each month, 7am at Campbell

Global offices. Tom can be reached at [email protected] or 541-404-1028.

Local non-profits encouraged to apply for BAH Community

Foundation grants by March 1, 2016

COOS BAY – Bay Area Hospital is committed to the mis-

sion of “Improving the Health of Our Community Every

Day.” To further that effort, BAH Community Foundation

grants are awarded

annually to local non-profit organizations that share that

desire to improve the overall health and well-being of our

community.

We know that we are making a difference, because we can

see the difference that is being made by those organizations

who have been awarded grant funds in the past.

Those organizations include 2015 recipients like the Bay

Area Rotary Club, for its Shots for Tots program, Coos

County Friends of Public Health, and the Waterfall Clinic.

Do you belong to, or know of, an organization that is com-

mitted to improving our community’s health and strives for

regional health care excellence? If so, download an applica-

tion from our website and return the completed application

materials before our March 1 deadline. (Note: only one

application per organization will be accepted.)

Again, these funds are not distributed solely to healthcare

organizations. Any non-profit organization can be awarded

a grant, as long as the funds go to contribute to the health

and

overall well-being of our community.
