The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badinghamby the Badingham Community Council

Registered Charity No. 274549

The Editor’s decision on whether or where to place material is final. Whileevery effort is made to check information published, the BCC does notendorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine.

E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorThere was a fantastic turnout for the Carols in the Pub and the Crib Service inthe days leading up to Christmas. Thanks to all involved for capturing the spiritof the season.

It was snowing this morning but now it’s a lovely bright, clear afternoon. Thespaniel sits beside me as I work at my computer. She didn’t know what tomake of the creature which she was catching glimpses of through the hedgejust now - could it be a pheasant with a very long neck? I might have beenpuzzled too if I hadn’t spotted a heron strutting across the grass an hour or sobefore. Fish keepers beware!

As we start a new year, thanks to our advertisers for supporting the Echoand to all our regular contributors for sending in their news. Looking ahead, suggestions were made in the Parish Plan Report 2013 (which you can seeon the Parish Council’s website - link on www.badingham.org.uk) for otheritems and articles which you would like to see in the Echo. These includedthe history of Badingham, Farming Updates and Recipes. If anyone can helpme with those that would be much appreciated.

Thank you, Tish

BADINGHAM

Although a little late, we wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year!

Seasonal GiftsOver 20 seasonal gifts were delivered to Badingham residents 70 years orover in time for Christmas. Many thanks were received from recipients –several saying that they looked forward to being 70 to receive their annualgift! We do appreciate hearing from you.

If someone in your household is going to be 70 by Christmas 2015 ringPauline (01728 602542) to be added to our list.

DefibrillatorOn December 16th Angela Weigh from the East of England Co-op came toBadingham Village Hall to ‘hand over’ the up and running defibrillator. Anambulance man, Steve Hammond, also came along to demonstrate andanswer any questions about the defib.

Many residents came along and, on behalf of all her hard work over thepast 2 years, the BCC present Angela with a seasonal basket. A bottle ofwine was also given to Steve. Thanks also to Gerry Newman who hashelped immensely through emails, meetings with various people etctowards the installation of the defib.

Village Hall lightingA new sensor light has been installed outside the Village Hall. Once thedark nights arrived the car park was very badly lit. BCC has contributed£250 towards this light which makes arriving and departing much safer forusers of the hall.

The BCC thank everyone who supports their activities and hope that 2015events are well attended too. Pauline Skevington, Chairman BCC

Easter Monday, 10am at the Churchyard: Easter Egg HuntEveryone most welcome!

Those of you who were not at the "New Year’s Eve" Charity Dance in aid ofBadingham Village Hall missed a very good evening. Everyone who wentenjoyed themselves – the young and not so young... if I do say myself!

Dancing to music and songs by the "Man in the Hat", it was great fun. TheVillage visitors and friends all came together, even making new friends. Yes,Badingham came alive due to the hard work of Lisa and Mark and theirhelpers. It took me back to 60s, 70s and 80s when we used to have dancesorganised by the BCC... let’s bring it back!!!

The evening will be one that our family and Jack's friend Adam will not quick-ly forget. So it brings me to say a great big Thank You to Lisa, Mark andtheir Helpers.

TRADITIONAL EASTER EGG HUNT

EASTER MONDAY6th April 2015at 10amat the ChurchyardFREE

All children welcome, including visitorsCome and Hunt for the Easter Eggs

Dear All

As President I have a few words to say over the support of our BCC. Events in2014 were not well attended – only the fete, which had a wonderful crowd.

This is not good enough and so disappointing for our committee who are a greatworking group. Their time is freely given for the good of you all - to enjoy, meetand make friends at the events we put on. We do have some very good friendsand the faithful few who support us in every way and greatest thanks and appre-ciation to them.

If our events are not supported, the BCC will sadly have second thoughts aboutcontinuing which would be a dreadful and huge decision and a VERY sad onefor the whole of Badingham!

Our first event for the year is the Easter Egg Hunt on Monday 3rd April in theChurchyard at 10am.  We hope this will be supported by many families. Therewill be 2 big eggs, for different age groups, small children and olderchildren. Whoever finds the eggs with a face will be given a big egg. Each childwill have an egg. No-one goes home without at least one. Parents and friendsare welcome, please come and support.

With new ideas for 2015 we hope you will join us.

DENNINGTON SPORTS CLUB

Our on-going project is to finish landscaping and tidying thechildren’s area, around the tennis court and bowls green andto reinstate the fence round the children’s area to create aspace with no access to animals. This a bit behind schedule, but will be completed as soon as possible.

Looking back to the summer fund-raising fete/fun day event,it was very well supported by residents from Dennington andsurrounding villages. The weather was warm and sunny and theevent raised £1,674.17 towards general expenses, insuranceetc. We thank everyone who supported the event.

The football pitch is being used for the 2014/15 season byyoung footballers from Framlingham, as at the momentDennington have no football teams.

Of course as the tennis court is a hard court, weatherpermitting, it can be used during the winter. Badminton isplayed Monday evenings, inside the VillageHall. Please contact me for more details onBadminton Club.

Farming Calendar – JanuaryA couple of people have asked what crop is growing on our Brick Kiln Field, the oneacross from the house. It looked like a field of greens as it quickly started to growbecause it is from the cabbage family. It is winter oilseed rape, which we grow forthe tiny black seeds which are crushed for their oil. It was drilled back in August, avery quick turnaround after harvest. For the past two years, a contractor has drilledthis for us; using big machines with GPS guidance for precision planting.Farmers are now required to grow three different crops, rather than making thatdecision themselves. Our other crops are winter wheat and spring beans - two ofour fields are still waiting to be planted. We can look forward to the gorgeous smellwhen the beans flower. We haven’t grown any for a few years as we had a lot ofhares on the farm and they could nibble their way to causing a lot of damage. Nowbuzzards are about, hare numbers have fallen considerably.A good frost at the turn of the year means we can take a tractor onto fields whichwere too wet before the freeze. We can recover fallen trees and branches and tidyup some hedges. The biggest task for this time of year is preparing for our annualaudit for crop assurance, which takes places early in January. Records need to becomplete for traceability, crop protection, soil management plus training records, risk assessments and health and safety. There’s a lot of paperwork involved infarming nowadays, so it’s a good job I have a few days off work between Christmasand New Year!

Framlingham Amateur Dramatics - FADSWe are delighted to announce that our spring production will be thethriller HOUSE GUEST by Francis Durbridge.  People of a certain age will befamiliar with the name of the author, as he was a talented and prolificwriter of murder mysteries and thrillers in the 1950s until the 1980s.  During this period he wrote 17 TV serials for the BBC and he was thecreator of Paul Temple.  The plot of HOUSE GUEST involves the kidnappingof a child, blackmail, murder and numerous twists and turns in the story.

Our director, Tony Lawrence, has just finished casting and rehearsals willbe well under way by the time you are reading this. The play will beperformed at The Headmaster Porter Theatre at Framlingham Collegefrom  Wednesday 15th to Saturday 18th April  and we look forward toseeing you there for an evening of shocks and surprises.

Courses for iPads, tablets

I’m trying to recall which evening of the week we went to Youth Club. NotWednesday – that was Brownies, not Thursday, WI. Can you remember?

That was the night when quite a broad age group of village children met up inthe Village Hall to play pool, table tennis, play with the record player – we hadabout four singles which we listened to endlessly : Eye of the Tiger, Come onEileen, The Lion Sleeps Tonight and I Eat Cannibals – remember that one?! I’mafraid all those ‘hits’ date us to 1982. We joined Youth Club very young!

We were bravely led by Gordon Giles and Anita Baldry – and the lady who livednear The Mill House who had an Old English Sheepdog – I’m better at remem-bering dogs than people! I say ‘bravely’ because it was a ‘them and us’ situationfor the children of Badingham back in the ‘mid 80s’ – when half the village wentto Peasenhall > Saxmundham > Leiston while the others went to Dennington >Framlingham. Going to TMHS, we probably had an extra half hour in bed beforewe all met at Stanley’s Corner to catch the school bus. I’ve no idea where theothers were picked up because we were heading down the hill and their buswas probably long gone. I’m guessing, like us, they prayed for snow days andwere full of joy when the bus failed to appear. We were off like a shot when therequired 15 minutes wait was up!

Snow days (and the morning after the bonfire when we all congregated on theRectory meadows to hunt for spent rocket cases) and Youth Club were oftenthe only times we mixed. You see, we heard horror stories about the goings onat Leiston High School while at Fram we had a bit of a snobby reputation – nothelped because Dennington Primary was the starting point to get through theBrandeston Hall entrance exams and at TMHS we had sports fixtures againstthe likes of Fram College and St Felix. I know, you’re right, I wasn’t picked formany sports teams. Not for want of trying – if there’s only 2 girls in your yearat primary school and the boys allow you to play footie, imagine the disappoint-ment when you’re not even wanted for hockey practice at high school.

I digress – so Youth Club was a chance for all Badingham children to gettogether, regardless of their school colours. We had trips to Leiston LeisureCentre too – roller-skating on a Saturday afternoon was a regular outing. Ispent my time clinging to the walls – I guess that lack of sporting prowess iswhat the PE teachers identified. We also went to Windsor Safari Park to seeWinnie the Killer Whale – I think that’s the time Richard wanted to start hispacked lunch by the time we got to Mill Road.

Sally, Lou, Jason and Richard are still in Badingham to tell the tale – what do youremember?

A SUFFOLK ARTIST

GAINSBOROUGH 1727 - 1788

Gainsborough's birthplace was in the Suffolk town of Sudbury. The housenow preserved as Gainsborough's birthplace was certainly tenanted thatyear 1727, by his father, who was not a success ended up as a Postmanfrom a Cloth Business. The Statue of Gainsborough is on Market Hill.

Gainsborough was very fond of Ancient Felixstowe, so old that some-where at low tide men see the ruins of a Roman Fort (so it is said). Landguard Fort that appeals to us and is a Museum, is of the 16th centurystands nobly remodelled in the last two centuries, it is also chiefly interest-ing for its place in Art and not in war for it was known a young man namedGainsborough who painted a picture of the Fort at the invitation of hispeppery friend Philip Thicknesse, the governor of the Fort.  As a youngman he painted the picture of Harwich in the distance and with the fleet ona windswept sea saluted by old ships at anchor.

Gainsborough painted only three seascapes, this was the first of them.Hewas paid 15 guineas for it, with a fiddle thrown in and with  an introductionto Bath which started his fortune.  Thicknesse had his picture engraved,so gave the Artist his first advertisement, told stories how he foundGainsborough.  Thicknesse was  walking down the road with a companionwho pointed out he had seen a man there all day looking rather mad andmiserable, where upon they walked up to the wall, only to find it waspainted figure on a board cut in the shape of a man. Gainsborough'sfamous Jack Peartree.

Ever after that Philip Thicknesse counted himself the discoverer of Gains-borough.  It was the best thing he ever did, for his career he had foughtrunaway slaves in Jamaica, had abused Judges and fled to France andfinally died at Boulogne.  It may be that is why not much has been saidabout him - a brilliant Artist.

Scone Pizza - Quick, easy and filling - Serves 4

The base: 7 heaped tablespoons of self-raising flour Equal quantities of oil (olive or rapeseed) and water, to mix to a dough Plenty of pepper to season

The toppings: Pasta sauce – anything you can get your hands on: homemade or from a

jar. Today we used a Lloyd Grossman smoky bacon pasta sauce Tomatoes - fresh from the garden or out of a tin – whole or chopped,

doesn’t really matter, as long as you drain the juice Cheese – Cheddar is just fine Plus anything else you have lurking in the fridge

1) Prepare your toppings: warm through your tomatoes and pasta sauce, chop your cheese into small cubes – enough to scatter over the top

2) In a bowl, measure out your flour and begin adding oil and water, mix-ing with a knife. Stop adding liquids when the mixture can form a softdough that you’ll be able to roll out.

3) Flour your work surface and roll out the pizza base into a circle about1cm / 1/2” thick – to fit your frying pan

4) Heat a little oil in your pan and, when it’s hot, slide in your dough

5) After 5 minutes cooking, the bottom side of the pizza should be goldenbrown. Turn it out, cooked side down, onto a dinner plate. Put a littlemore oil in your frying pan

6) Put another dinner plate on top of your pizza base and flip the plates soyou can slide your pizza, uncooked side down, back into the pan

7) Spread the pizza sauce over your base, then the tomatoes and cheeseThe time it takes to do that will be enough to cook the bottom

8) Pop your pan under the grill and wait for the cheese to melt

9) Serve immediately

Dad says it tastes a lot better than “shop bought rubbish”!
