bears. Basically they can do nothing to pre-
vent this bear hostility other than allowthem to demolish their property.Jimmy was told if he shot one of thebears he could be fined $20,000 andeven could have jail time. Jimmy jok-ingly told one of the guys that it wouldprobably be cheaper and less time toshoot him. That’s only a joke folks.Jimmy and Rosie are superstars onBoggs Hill.
Rosie has also been suffering withsevere gout in one of her fingers andJimmy has gout in his body and suffersa lot with that.
It appears the couple has enough todeal with daily without the disruption
that the bears are causing. One of my neighbors told me that we
have bears behind my house. Whateverwill be a natural predator for the bearwe will have to bring to Wise Countyand Hurricane to rid ourselves of thesebeats .
ATTENDS CAMP BETHELSicily Laster is off to Camp Bethel to

Beware of storm chasers, out-of-town contractorsThe BBB Serving
Western VA is advisingconsumers affected byrecent powerful stormsto be on the lookout forstorm chasers and out-of-town contractorssoliciting homeownersand businesses.
“Too often we seeitinerant workersswarm into WesternVirginia after majorstorm damage,” saidJulie Wheeler, presi-dent and CEO of BBBServing Western VA. “Itis not uncommon forthese storm chasers tobe unlicensed and full ofbig promises they can’tdeliver. They are oftenlong gone to anotherstate by the time theconsumer realizes thejob is half-done or doneincorrectly.”
In some instances,
the BBB has seen out-of-state contractors set-ting up shop in the areatrying to capture con-struction work causedby the storms.
The BBB is advisinglocal, established con-tractors to avoid stormchasers who may offerto pay substantialamounts of money touse their local estab-lished name, reputationand contact informa-tion. After masquerad-ing as a local business, storm chasers can leavethese companies withunsatisfied consumersand unrealistic andunfulfilled warranties.
Another commonscheme involves insur-ance fraud, where theitinerant worker offersto deal with the con-sumer’s insurance com-
pany directly and sug-gests the homeownernot pay their deductible.Under no circum-stances can a homeowner avoid payingtheir deductible. Anycontractor that suggestsotherwise to a home-owner is committinginsurance fraud.
The BBB hasreceived multiplereports since July 2012of contractors offeringto cover deductibles andthen charging highercosts to cover thisexpense.
Consumers areencouraged to alwaysdeal with their insur-ance company directlyand not allow a third-party to engage in nego-tiations for insurancecoverage and settle-ments.
Some BBB tips:r Start with trust. For
reliable information, lists of BBB AccreditedBusinesses by industry, and business reviewsyou can trust on localcompanies, visitwww.bbb.org.
r Check to see thatyour contractor is prop-erly licensed and is reg-istered by your state orlocal agency.
r Many municipali-ties require a solicita-tion permit if sales peo-ple go door-to-door.Verify that they have tohave a permit by con-tacting your local town-ship or municipality.BBB suggests con-sumers be pro-active inselecting a contractorand not re-active tosales calls on the phoneor door-to-door pitches.
r While most roofingcontractors abide by thelaw, be careful allowingsomeone you do notknow to inspect yourroof. An unethical con-tractor may actuallycreate damage to getwork. If a roofing con-tractor goes up ontoyour roof without yourpermission, call thepolice department.
r Try to get at leastthree or four quotesfrom contractors, andinsist that payments bemade to the company, not an individual.
r Do not pay for thejob in advance. Be waryof any contractor whodemands full or halfpayment up front.
r Resist high-pres-sure sales tactics suchas the “good deal” you’llget only if you hire the
contractor on the spot.r Get a written con-
tract that specifies theprice, the work to bedone, the amount of lia-bility insurance cover-age maintained by thecontractor, and a timeframe. Require a copyof their current certifi-cate of insurance.
r Pay by credit card,if possible; you mayhave additional protec-tion if there is a prob-lem.
r Check that the con-tractor’s vehicle hassigns or markings on itwith the business nameand phone number, andhas your state’s licenseplates.
If you need moreinformation, contact theBBB at 540/342-3455 or800/533-5501, or visitwww.bbb.org. u
