Producing musical theatre has always been the “norm” at the Arizona Broadway Theatre, located in Peo-ria; however, this summer they’ve changed things up a bit. For the first time in its five-year history, ABT has mounted a play (or non-musical) – the rib-tickling comedy Lend Me a Tenor, which will run in repertory with the hit-musical I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.

ABT’s Executive Producer, Kiel Klaphake, and his wife, Cassandra (ABT’s Artistic Producer) have wanted to produce more than just musicals here in the Valley. “There are some great (non-musical) shows out there that we feel audiences would want to see,” Kiel stated. “As we discuss which shows will be on the docket for our upcoming seasons, we take into account that. As the only professional theatre in the West Valley, we feel we have a duty not only to entertain, but also to educate our patrons on the wealth of shows that are out there,” Cassandra added. “By adding shows like Lend Me A Tenor and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, we hope we can encourage people to visit our theatre and share in something new.”

Behind the ScenesLast season, ABT ran two shows in repertory – Forever Plaid and The Taf-fetas. Both productions were similar in style, so both used the same set with slight differences in the stair-case configuration and wall units; to change from one set to the other took about fifteen to twenty minutes. This season, because Tenor and I Love You are so different, each set had to be built individually and in such a way that they both could be rolled off the stage in sections and replaced with the other set. “There is nothing on either set that resembles or is even used from one show to the other,” remarked Dori Brown, the scenic de-signer for both productions. “The only thing these two shows share is the stage.” The I Love You set is made of steel and is welded together to create a more urban/industrial feel. A huge wall of lights upstage of (behind) the set helps to isolate scenes making them more intimate, ideal for a pro-duction that has only four performers.

Lend Me A Tenor is set in the 1930s and takes place in a hotel room. “The challenge here,” mentioned Dori, “was that the play takes place in two rooms, mostly at the same time. Be-cause we can’t build a full wall down the center of the stage, we created the illusion of one being there with a door frame and back-to-back furni-ture pieces – one in the main room, the other in the bedroom. Right now it’s taking the technical crew about an hour and a half to make the switch from one show to the other,” Brown concluded.

mIn the director’s seat for ABT’s first play is Kiel Klaphake. “This is the third show that I have had the opportunity to direct here at the theatre. When you start a company –any company – it’s hard to think of anything other than the business side of things. So, now it feels good to be able to get out from behind the desk and stretch my artistic legs,” Kiel said. Prior to Lend Me A Tenor, Kiel also directed ABT’s productions of Cabaret and Gypsy. He has also starred on the ABT stage as Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun and Erik/Phantom in Phantom.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is directed, choreographed and music directed by ABT’s Artistic Associate and resident choreogra-pher, Kurtis W. Overby. “Because of the cast size of I Love You (four actors), it was just easier for me to do the whole thing,” said Kurtis. “Usu-ally when we do musicals, there are three different people working on one vision and sometimes that can get a little difficult. Don’t get me wrong, I love collaborating with other

directors and musical directors, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to be in charge of everything. Sometimes it’s just easier,” Kurtis concluded. Kurtis first came to ABT during its inaugural season and has performed in a total of eight shows, including Cabaret, La Cage aux Folles and Pump Boys and Dinettes, which he also music directed. Other ABT directing credits include Cats and The Taffetas. He is also responsible for choreograph-ing every show in ABT’s fourth and fifth seasons – a total of 15 shows in a little over a year. For those shows, Kurtis has been nominated for six ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence in the professional theatre category.

About I Love You and Lend Me A TenorLend Me A Tenor is the story of the greatest tenor of his generation, Tito Merelli, who is scheduled to appear for one night only in Otello. Through a hilarious series of mishaps, Tito is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. Presumed dead, the general manager persuades his as-sistant to go on in Tito’s place.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change celebrates the mating game and says everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, ro-mance, marriage, lovers, husbands,

wives and in-laws, but are afraid to admit.

ABT is conveniently located south of W. Bell Road off the Loop 101, east of the Peoria Sports Complex. Parking is free. For tickets and additional information about gift cards, special events packages, Theatre for Young Audiences, the Academy for Young Performers program, or to become an ABT subscriber, call the Box Office at 623.776.8400 or visit www.azbroad-way.org.

LEND ME A TENOR At Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria.

Anyone want fun with a capital T ? Then look no further than LEND ME A TENOR at the Arizona Broadway Theatre where a wild and unpredictable comedy has hit the stage with more laughs than a sitcom soundtrack! Leave it to director Kiel Klaphake to dust off this comedy by Ken Ludwig and make it fresh and funny. This play uses it all- plot twists, mistaken identities, innuendoes, and more entrances and exits than a department store on Saturday! Set in 1934, this comedy revolves around the Italians-as in Tito Merilli-a world famous opera star about to perform Othello in Cleveland for the local opera company. But Tito, played delicately and boisterously by Roy Hunt, makes his grand arrival with his Italian wife, played by fiery Morgan Springer, comes up sick and then dead? It’s off to the comedic races from there as Henry Saunders, the opera GM, played by the charming and delusional James Rio, must recast Tito, blackface and all, or lose everything! His prayers are heard as his hilarious and incompetent assistant Max, played wonderfully by Michael Wolter, steps in to take on the role of Othello. The rest is comedic history-as Max impersonates Tito, Maggie his fling obsessed girlfriend, played by the flirty and flighty Maris Fernandez-falls for Tito, I mean Max; who is seduced by Diana, played by the sexy and sentimental Morgan Springer, who is in love with Tito, who is stalked by Julia, played perfectly by Carolyn McPhee, who is-well, hold on this comedy is a great ride. Throw in the lovable Bell Hop, played by David Errigo, Jr. and the Champaign toast is waiting for a delightful comedy brawl you won’t want to miss. Through September 26th. Tickets 623-776-8400 or AzBroadwayTheatre.com.

FISH TANK ENSENMBLE at MIM Musical Theater in Phoenix

There was a thunderous excitement playing at the MIM Musical Theatre on Saturday night as the inspiring and unique music of FISHTANK EN-SEMBLE rumbled through an almost two hour show-complete with musi-cal saw and vocal renditions straight from Romania and beyond. Led by the charismatic and lovely Ursala Knudson, FISHTANK has made a mark on audiences across the country, adding Phoenix to the list. There was spontaneous applause and cheering all night as this four piece ensemble sped through various ethnic creations with Roma roots. Wild Serbian and Gypsy anthems, flamenco, French hot jazz, and their own quirky and funny original tunes, FISHTANK lifted the spirits with hand clapping rhythms and instrumental solos. Kudos to violinist Fabrice Martinez, guitarist Doug “Douge” Smolens, and bassist extraordinaire Djordje Stijepovic, who charmed the Phoenix audience with songs from their new album, WOMAN IN SIN. Featuring Ursala and her Gypsy banjo song “After You’ve Gone”, the haunting “Woman in Sin”, the fast and furious “Espagnolette”, a Gypsy Johnny Cash ballad “Djordje’s Rachenitza”, and the gypsy volcano song “Opa Opa”. If you didn’t get a ticket to this amazing musical exploration (it was sold out), you can still pick up their cd at the MIM musical store. They would be extremely happy you could enjoy their musical creativity-from their hearts to yours.

Hannover House, the distributor behind Joel Schumacher’s emotion-ally electrifying drama “Twelve,” will join forces in January with Red Bear Entertainment to produce “Termina-tor 3000,” a $70 million computer-animated motion picture based on the characters and storyline from the “Terminator” franchise.

Speaking of computer-animated properties, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote are appearing this year in a trio of shorts but it is Bugs Bunny who has scored his own feature-length film. “Elf” scribe David Beren-baum will write the Warner Bros. project, which will combine live action with computer animation.

Finally, Universal Pictures will cel-ebrate the 25th anniversary of the “Back to the Future” franchise with a DVD/Blu-ray release of the time-traveling trilogy on Oct. 26. The set has been restored for perfect picture and pure digital sound and will in-clude more than two hours of never-before-seen bonus features.

The premise: a once famous director of the Bolshoi Orchestra is now work-ing as a facility cleaner and has been refused to be reinstated to his former glory. To get revenge, he rounds up his old musician friends and goes to Paris pretending they are an official orchestra. Playing exclusively at Har-kins Theatres, visit HarkinsTheatres.com for show times and information.

Best Worst Movie is the “Best” About the “Worst”By Randy Montgomery

The 1990 horror flick Troll 2 has been labeled “one the worst films ever made.” The film’s cast of unknown actors agree. Troll 2 is about an inno-cent family that gets stuck in a small town of vegetarian goblins that turn humans into plants. It’s not scary at all, rather quite hilarious (although it wasn’t supposed to be). Over the years, this odd-ball piece of cinema has grown a cult-like following of devoted fans, while the actors have distanced themselves from it. Troll 2’s young star Michael Stephenson has made a documentary that pokes fun at this crazy film, tries to make sense of fan reaction and follows up with the cast, many of whom have disap-peared into oblivion. Funny, fascinat-ing and an excellent character study, Stephenson’s Best Worst Movie bucks the reaction of its subject and is actu-ally one of the best documentaries of the year.

Best Worst Movie and Troll 2 are playing back to back exclusively at MADCAP Theatres in Tempe. Seem them both! Grade: A-

What If… By Randy Montgomery

Faith-based movies have done well in theatres lately. Sony’s Fireproof saw a respectable box office, as did To Save a Life this year. These are never big blockbusters, but typically make back their budget and then some. The latest; What If… stars Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) as a successful businessman who left his girlfriend and ministry years ago for his career. Along comes “Mike the Angel” (John Ratzenberger, Cheers) prompting him to reevaluate life and his religious calling. What If… is playing at select AMC and Harkins Theatres around the Valley; one of the first metro areas to platform this indie.

“LOST: THE FINAL SEASON”Also known as “The Complete Sixth Season,” this concluding round of theABC drama series – which earned 12 current Emmy nominations – resolvesa number of questions posed throughout the show’s run. There should beconsiderable satisfaction for “Lost” devotees in how the program wraps upin an extended-length finale; Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly and TerryO’Quinn are among those on hand to see their characters out. A“Complete Collection” set also is available. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Alsoon Blu-ray)

“THE SIMPSONS: THE COMPLETE THIRTEENTH SEASON”The saga of Springfield continues in the latest year of the animated Foxsitcom to hit video. It’s easy to identify the set, since it’s packaged in theshape and image of series character Ralph Wiggum’s head. Of course, there’s a “Treehouse of Horror” entry, but one of the funniest episodescleverly sends up the movie “Blame It on Rio.” Paul Newman, ReeseWitherspoon, Pierce Brosnan, Richard Gere and music’s R.E.M. are amongthe guest voices.››› (Not rated: AS, P) (Also available on Blu-ray)

“DORIAN GRAY”Oscar Wilde’s classic novel, about a man who appears to stay foreveryoung, gets fresh treatment in a version that boasts an impressive cast insupport of title star Ben Barnes (“The Chronicles of Narnia: PrinceCaspian”). Colin Firth, Rebecca Hall (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”), BenChaplin, Caroline Goodall (“Schindler’s List”) and Maryam d’Abo (“TheLiving Daylights”) also are featured in the tale, which still involves apainting that reveals the shocking truth about Gray. Director Oliver Parkervisited Wilde territory before with “An Ideal Husband” and “TheImportance of Being Earnest.” ››› (R: AS, N, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

If timing is everything, Jennifer Lopez’s character doesn’t have an especiallygreat sense of it in this attempted comedy. The New Yorker has all but givenup on romance, but she holds onto her desire to be a parent, leading her toconsider artificial insemination. On the very day of the procedure, sheencounters the possible man of her dreams (Alex O’Loughlin, the star of thisfall’s CBS reboot of “Hawaii Five-0”). Anthony Anderson (“Law & Order”)and veteran talents Linda Lavin, Tom Bosley and Robert Klein co-star. ››(PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray)

For fans of summer action movies, a dash of“Salt” definitely doesn’t hurt.

There’s no question of what the film ismeant to be, even if you’ve seen only theslightest snippet of any ad for it: a veryphysical thriller for Angelina Jolie. And there’salso no question she’s up to the task, thanks toseveral of her previous career choices.

Specifically, those would be the “Lara Croft”adventures, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and – veryparticularly – “Wanted,” which absolutelyreveled in putting her through the sort of

pulse-pounding stunt work that “Salt” isdesigned for.

The story is pretty much a long chase, withJolie playing the pursued as Evelyn Salt, a CIAagent suspected of double-dipping and alsoworking for the Russians. The doubt beginswhen a defector names her, and before youcan say “Anna Chapman” (to invoke a real-lifecase of recent vintage), Salt is on the run.

Her efforts to remain free and to clearherself involve a wild cat-and-mouse game onthe highways of Washington, D.C., early on.(That’s actually Albany, N.Y., doubling for thenation’s capital.)

From there, it’s on to New York and variousdisguises as Salt uses her expertise to keepherself out of her would-be interrogators’hands. Good actors such as Liev Schreiber andChiwetel Ejiofor play former colleagues turnedenemies, as they engineer the capture of Salt.

Children who eat breakfast perform better on standard-ized achievement tests and have fewer behavior problems in school.

Despite age, eat-ing breakfast has an advantageous effect

on late-morning mood, satiety and cognitive

performance.

Researchers from the National Weight Control Registry, a database of more than 3,000 people who have lost at least 60 pounds and kept it off for an average of 6 years, found that eating breakfast every day was an effective weight control strategy for 78% of the people in the registry.

PIZZA TRIVIAThe biggest pizza ever made was baked in Norwood, South Africa in 1990. It was a massive 100 feet across.

The word pizza was originally spelt as “pitsa”. Americans eat billions of slices of pizza every year; in fact the annual per capita pizza consumption is 23 pounds!

Saturday night is traditionally the biggest night of the week for eating pizza.

Better Nutrition - Organic food helps your body fight off infections and maintain balance by being full of vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

No Toxins - No pesticides means a lower risk of cancer, birth defects, illness and a host of other maladies.

Tastes Better - Those who regularly dine organic will tell you the food has more flavor, fruits are sweeter, etc.

Environment - The lack of toxic chemicals used in organic farming means you won’t be eating the chemicals in your groundwater or your next crop rotation.

Variety - In addition to fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, meat, eggs, dairy items, and baby foods, it’s possible to buy organic pasta sauces, salsa, fruit juice, soup, cereal, ice cream, peanut butter, tea, coffee, frozen dinners, chocolate, popcorn, snack food, beer and other beverages, to name just a few options available.

“Welcome back students” Look for those signs all over Tempe as the annual infl ux for college students to Arizona State has been taking place all week. The fi rst few days are always alot of fun…renewing friend-ships, meeting new people and the inevitable discussions about what everybody did this Summer. But no-body ever thinks to ask Tempe what it did over the Summer. This year they should, because what Tempe did over the summer was upgrade their beer scene. Granted, there has always been a few places to get good beer in town, but returning students (21 and older only please) should fi nd alot more choices than ever before.

The biggest change in the area is not coming from one of the Tempe establishments, but rather from a new selection in town. Long time Chandler favorite SanTan Brewing has contracted with a local whole-saler and is now being distributed throughout the state. Tempe is rap-idly embracing this local brewery and handles are sprouting up everywhere. Expect to see plenty of Devil’s Ale, Epicenter Amber, HopShock IPA

and Hefeweizen around town. And now that they are starting to can their award winning beers, look for them in package stores as well starting September 1st.

But what about the local watering holes? No problem. Yucca Tap Room has added a ton of craft selections including beers from Bell’s, Ander-son Valley, Breckenridge, SKA and Alaskan. At the relatively new Taste

of Tops (located next to Tops Li-quors), you can fi nd an ever-changing selection of tap handles that have recently included a 2007 vintage Great Divide Old Ruffi an among its selections. Taste of Tops offers an intimate bar area and a fi rst class bottle selection to go along with its draft rotation. The bar opens at 3:00 PM every day, so plan your visit to the package store to include a pint or two next door. Expect to see even more specialty releases at this location as it continues to gain more and more popularity.

New Belgium Brewing has been an Arizona staple for quite some time, so it comes as no surprise that their fl agship Fat Tire is available all over Tempe. Of course three of the busiest bars in town have it available. So when you need your fi x of Fat Tire, stop in at Casey Moores, Barney’s Boathouse or San Felipe’s for a little of that amber elixir. Likewise, an-other popular brewery, Pyramid, can be found throughout the town. Their Haywire Hefeweizen has caught on and is popping up in a large variety of locations. You can also fi nd their fun-loving brewery representatives out on the town frequently with promotions,

give-aways and other activities.

Nitrogen beers are gaining many new fans. Up until about a year ago, about the only version of this creamy and smooth method of serving draft beer you could fi nd was the omni-present Guinness. You can still fi nd plenty of that, but something inter-esting is happening. The folks at Left Hand Brewing brought the nitrogen edition of their Milk Stout to Phoenix and the silky, slightly sweeter taste has proven to be a hit. Served on nitrogen, Milk Stout takes on a whole

new persona. It quenches the thirst, provides a mouth-feel that is second to none, and even mixes better with other beers and ciders to provide blended drinks that impress. Tavern on Mill was the fi rst Tempe location to adopt this brand and it has proven to be a workhorse for them. Expect to fi nd it in many other places soon.

Bison Witches has always been a favorite eating spot for locals, and they have always been known for a great beer selection. Breckenridge Brewing and Big Sky are a couple of beers you can always fi nd avail-able to match up with their fi rst class sandwiches. Horse and Hound, and Devil’s Advocate have added more craft beer to their lineup, the former being one of the fi rst bars to jump on the SanTan Brewing bandwagon. And if you’re making it down to Horse and Hound, make sure you check out

Boulders on Broadway. These folks have been longtime supporters of great craft beer and now you can fi nd offerings from Bell’s, New Belgium, Pyramid, Big Sky, SKA, Oskar Blues, and another local brewer, Sun Up at this location. Boulders is also the place to go for fun and games as brewery reps love to host events here.

If it’s date night and something a

little more upscale is your choice, how about La Bocca Urban Pizzeria? The soft setting and great food is enhanced by a couple of outstanding

beer choices. Nothing goes down better in Tempe weather than a Bell’s Oberon, but the hidden treasure here is Tripel Karmeliet. This Belgian

Tripel is fl avorful yet deli-cate and pairs incredibly well with just about any style of food. House of Tricks carries bottles of another incredible food beer, Saison Dupont.

So whether it’s Mill Cue Club for Devil’s Ale, Stray Cats for Dale’s Pale Ale or SKA True Blonde, Picazzo’s for yet another local beer, Sonoran Burning Bird,

or for the organic beer selections at Pita Jungle…or for any of the numer-ous other great craft beers available in Tempe, make sure that when you are going out, you treat yourself right and order something a little special. There are well over sixty bars in town that carry craft beer and you owe it to yourself. You also owe it to yourself to drop that 8:00 AM lab…that never works out well.

Tops has 12 rotating handles, comprised mostly of unique craft beers, for example, last week they served Great Divide’s Old Ruffi an and Stone’s Sublimely Self. Tops offers a limited food selection, such as the Humus Platter, Artichoke Dip or the Cheese Platter. Hours are 3PM-midnight Monday through Thursday, Friday and Saturday 3PM-2AM and Sunday 3PM-10PM. Happy Hour is always 3-6PM DAILY.

Eight years ago, the seldom-heard-from developer Illusion Softworks, nowknown as 2K Czech, created “Mafia,” a third-person action/adventure titlethat garnered praise from critics. With its highly detailed city and many modesof era-specific transportation, the game brought players deep inside the worldof organized crime and eventually left them begging for more. Well, thebegging has finally paid off, and 2K Czech is ready to deliver anotherinstallment of crime-based carnage with the eagerly anticipated “Mafia II” forthe Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and personal computer.

Vito Scaletta is a young, tough-as-nails Italian-American who has onlyknown poverty. Being forced to witness his father struggle to make ends meethas only driven him closer to the unscrupulous but highly profitable ways ofthe Mafia. Vito’s life of robbery and car theft has led him deeper and deeperinto the world of organized crime, where he and his friend, Joe Barbaro, longto climb the ladder of the underworld and eventually become “made men.”

Mat Latos hasn’t held back this season, not on themound for the San Diego Padres as the leader of themajors’ best pitching staff.

Off the mound is another story. Call it “Sneeze-gate,”if you will.

Latos landed on the disabled list last month with astrain to his left side suffered when, of all things, he triedto hold back a sneeze. As it was (or wasn’t), the stifledsneeze occurred at just the right time – and thus wasspeculated by some to be simply an excuse – because ofthe Padres’ intent on limiting Latos’ innings this season, his first full one in the big leagues.

After a couple of weeks of rest, the 22-year-old right-hander didn’t miss a beat in his next start, allowing tworuns and striking out seven in six innings to win his 11thgame, good for fifth in the National League. EnteringAugust, Latos also ranked sixth with a 2.45 ERA, hadn’tlost since June 4 (six straight wins), and most impressivelyhad a WHIP of 0.99 – combined walks and hits perinnings pitched – that led the NL and was second in themajors. Now that’s stifling opposing offenses.

FULL NAME:Mathew A. LatosBIRTHPLACE:Alexandria, Va.BIRTH DATE:Dec. 9, 1987

ROAD TO STARDOM:Latos was drafted in 2006out of BrowardCommunity College inFlorida. He signed with thePadres in 2007, quickly

rose through their minorleague ranks, and wasrecalled from Double-A to make his major leaguedebut in July 2009.

FridayNASCAR Racing5 p.m. on A ESPNA dramatic two-lap shootout made David Ragan a winner at last year’s Food City 250. Ra-gan, who led the final 56 laps, managed to hold off Roush Fenway teammate Carl Edwards on the .533-mile oval at Tennessee’s Bristol Motor Speedway, pinning him behind a lapped car to win his second Nationwide race of 2009. Ragan has moved on full time to Sprint Cup, so a new champion will emerge from a field that includes Edwards, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and others.

MondayNFL Preseason Football5 p.m. on # KTVK, A ESPNA future Hall of Fame quarterback retires, leaving his team in the lurch. No, not Brett Favre, but Kurt Warner, whose former team, the Arizona Cardinals, take on the Tennessee Titans tonight in Nashville in preseason action. The Cards hope Matt Leinart, his presumptive suc-cessor, can avoid the injuries that curtailed his previous starting stints. For the Titans, Vince Young seems on the verge of fulfilling his considerable potential after a breakthrough 2009.

Eric LindellTuesday, Aug 24, 8pm Rhythm Room Lindell came to national prominence after relocating to New Orleans, and has grown in popularity from being a local/regional New Orleans-based artist to tour nationally and in-ternationally. Eric’s music has been described by USA Today as “pumping soul into funk, blue and roots-rock.” (April 23, 2009). The Chicago Sun-Times called Lindell “a tremendous

raw talent…with a fully realized musical vision.” (January 20, 2008). The Los Angeles Daily News says “Lindell serves up bluesy blue-eyed soul smothered with a big heap of New Orleans funk…The shuffling interplay of electric guitars, percolating organ and Creole horns never fails to make you feel like dancing all the way down Canal Street.” (January 27, 2008)

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Maria at [email protected] to possibly be featured here

each week. Please include pictures when possible.

BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

This week’s events seemed to have a trend, maybe the world is trying to tell us something. In which case, I would guess it would be to live life fully and to share with others what you are lucky to have. After all, they say Karma is a....

Fashion 4 A Cause Sat Aug 21st Events are always a good time aren’t they? Especially when there is a line-up of one cool thing after the next to keep you entertained. How about we start this purple and orange themed event off with a fashion runway show from local designers featur-ing threads from Bobby Fresh, Style Noel, and Jadoir, all to the sounds of DJ Klassic. Then we can throw in live performances from artists you should keep your eye on; D’Aaron Anthony, Go Mode Music and Geetha Fairwood. Oh and what was that? The cash I throw down is NOT going straight to club owners but to a good cause?! The non-profi t you are contributing to is Athletes 4 Awareness; this group focuses on educating society on top-ics of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and healthy living. Their mission is to make sure we are all here and healthy for our kids and grandkids. Aside from entertainment, the event will feature local hairstylists, raffl es and other vendors. Doors open at 4pm and continue forward till 2am at the Wyn-dham Hotel. Tickets are $15 or $20 at the door. www.dynastyinkorporated.com or call 602.330.8544

The Wellness Dinner Fri Aug 20th My favorite restaurants and cafes are ones where I feel good about what I am eating. There are no processed ingredients, nothing that at one point I am sure was powdered, and no guilt; just pure food to sustain your mind and your body. In my search to fi nd

places that meet these standards, I ran into Cafe Forte, which lives by the saying “Enjoy Life One Bite at a Time.” This bistro and wine bar dedi-cates themselves to fresh, organic, free-range produce and ingredients all combined into a variety of delicious dishes. The event they are hosting goes hand-in-hand with their motif. Guest speaker Aminda Courtwright, is the founder of ARCreated, which focuses on wellness, mentoring, and basically fi nding your state of happi-ness. Aminda will be having a discus-sion about issues that face us every day and the solutions that follow. While you open up your mind to new insight, you will enjoy a fantastic 3 course meal including Vegan options and a complimentary glass of wine. Dinner is at 5:30pm so come and let more “positive” into your life. $35/person. www.cafeforte.com www.arcreated.com

TEQUILA MYTHOLOGYMYTH: Tequila and Mezcal are hallucinogenicFACT: This myth probably stems from the similarity be-tween the words “Mezcal” and “mescaline,” Mescaline is an alkaloid that produces hallucinations and is found organically in the peyote, a variety of cactus. While drink-ing too much Tequila might seem to cause hallucinations to some people, alcohol is the sole intoxicant in Tequila.

GOO GOO DOLLS TO RELEASE NEW STUDIO ALBUM‘Something For The Rest of Us’ August 31st 2010

One of rock’s most beloved and enduring bands, Goo Goo Dolls, have announced that they will release their ninth studio album, Something For The Rest Of Us, on August 31st, 2010. The album features the band’s new single, “Home”, which is already being embraced at radio. The album was produced by Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl Jam, David Bowie) with additional production by Butch Vig (Green Day, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, etc.) John Fields (Paul Westerberg, Jimmy Eat World) and the Goo Goo Dolls.

The result showcases more of the well-crafted songs and timeless lyrics that have been such an integral part of the Goo Goo Dolls’ continuing success. Written and recorded over the past couple of years, Something For The Rest Of Us delivers another dose of emotionally-charged, well-crafted rock songs such as “Sweetest Lie,” “One Night,” and “Soldier.” With his song-writing, Rzeznik confronts some of the issues that have become part of many people’s everyday lives. “I wanted some of the material on this album to address the disillusionment of the dif-ficult period we live in; I wanted to give a voice to the emotional uncertainty that accompanies hard times. “So many people are struggling to keep it together through tough economic conditions and two wars that seem to have no end in sight. The ones who bear the brunt of these burdens are everyday people. That’s who I want to speak to.”

The new studio album is the follow up to 2006’s Let Love In, which marked the Goo Goo Dolls’ 20th anniversary as a band. The album spawned sev-eral Top 10 singles, including “Better Days,” “Stay With You,” and the title track, which gave them their record-breaking twelfth Top 10 hit. Their thirteenth, “Before It’s Too Late,” ap-peared on the blockbuster Transform-ers soundtrack. Goo Goo Dolls have racked up four Grammy nominations and sold more than 10 million albums.

It took Elvis Presley 31 takes of “Hound Dog” to get the fi nal version that we hear today. In 1988, the song was named the most played record of all time on American juke boxes.

Paul McCartney wrote the song “Lovely Rita, Meter Maid” for the album “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” after getting a parking ticket from a female warden in Abbey Road.

After seeing the 1978 movie, The Buddy Holly Story, Crickets drummer Jerry Allison said he thought it “was a horrible movie.” He went on to say “the only thing I saw about it that was real was they spelled Buddy’s name right.”

Kanye West Quits SwearingKanye West has stopped swearing in public in a bid to become a perfect gentleman.

The ‘Power’ rapper - famed for gatecrashing the stages of numerous award shows, most notably at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards when he grabbed a microphone off ‘Best Female Video’ winner Taylor Swift to launch into a tirade - says he’s now in a positive frame of mind and has put his former persona behind him.

Speaking during an interview on US radio station Power 105.1 Kanye said: “That’s the Rosewood mentality, like affluence, like not cursing out in public, pulling out chairs for your lady, opening up doors. That’s where I’m at.”

He added his present worldview is so positive it’s helping him produce the best raps of his career and despite the title of his fifth album being ‘Dark Twisted Fantasy’ he is not in a “dark place”.

Kanye, 33, added: “It’s ill because I’m at this really good emotional, great place in my life, and they’re always saying in hip-hop that you have to be in a dark place to make great hip-hop. I feel like I rap better than I’ve ever rapped at this point. I’m writing raps

and I don’t even realise how positive they are. They just sound like regular good negative raps.”

Kanye releases ‘Dark Twisted Fan-tasy’ in November.

COMEDY NIGHT!

CARRIE SNOWIn Concert at Wild Horse Pass She’s back! After being famous as a Big Woman Comic, Carrie Snow finally lost the 100 lbs, and has re-invented herself as just a Funny Woman. It’s been quite a change.

Now that she’s not on a perpetual diet, her back doesn’t hurt, and she’s not always hungry and more than a little angry, Carrie gets to be her true self. What a treat. She was featured in the movie, The Aristocrats, but has since cut her

hair, so no one recognizes her from that, either. A life-changing USO-tour followed. She’s headlined at CAROLINE’S, THE PUNCH LINES, THE IMPROVISATIONS, THE COMEDY STORES, and CAESAR’S TAHOE, to name a few. In addition to the road, Carrie was regularly

on television doing every stand-up ensemble show from PBS’ COMEDY TONIGHT, AN EVENING AT THE IMPROV, to guesting on every talker from THE SALLY JESSE RAPHAEL SHOW, MARILU, VICKI1, THE LATE SHOW, ‘A’ LIST, LEEZA, to CAROLINE’S, and COMEDY CEN-TRAL. Her original Comedy Tonight performance was nominated for a local Emmy award, but was beaten out by a dog show. Lots of prisoners wrote letters. Come see her live at the Ovations Live! Showroom at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino this Friday, August 20. Tickets are FREE with an active Players Club Card.

What’s Your Poison?

In Laos, drinkers can buy a bottle of snake wine-with a real dead snake inside. The poison of venomous snakes is dissolved in the liquor, which is then used for

medicinal purposes. Snake products help treat a range of ailments, including arthritis, fever and whooping cough. (Pg.183)

Featureless Face

If visitors to the Chiesa Della Santa Church in Bologna, Italy, gaze long enough into a grated opening in the church wall, a strange, dark, almost featureless face will stare back at them. The spooky apparition is the mummified relic of St. Catherine of Bologna. She died in 1475, but after a series of miracles, her body, inexplicably showing little sign of decay, was exhumed by nuns. A few years later, Catherine appeared to one of the nuns in a vision, asking to be placed in the small chapel, sitting upright. So they dressed her in nun’s clothing, placed a golden cross in her hand and sat her in a golden chair, where she has remained for more than 500 years. (pg. 166)

Lady JasmineCigar Diva“Shade Grown” vs. “Sun Grown”

These are terms applied to the growing style of wrapper leaves. Shade grown means that tapadas, which are large white fabric sheets, similar to cheesecloth, are suspended 6-10 feet above the entire crop to shield the leaves from direct exposure to sunlight. The opposite of this is to allow the leaves to grow without any protection, directly in the sunlight. The implementation of either procedure will yield completely different wrappers, as the exposure to the sun will affect the amount of sugars and oils the plant produces, the thickness of the veins in the leaf, and ultimately, its color. A common shade grown wrapper color is of a “Claro” color. This has a pale “coffee with cream” color. Many companies will often alternatively refer to this shade as “natural”. A common sun grown wrapper color is “Maduro”, which has a hue of dark or black coffee. It’s science darling… always room to learn.
