G rup Gamma com-pleted in June its latest Connectin-Gamma cycle of

conventions, with new mee-tings in Zaragoza, Vitoria, Alicante, Cáceres, Madrid, León, Santiago de Compos-tela, Antequera (Málaga) and Manresa (Barcelona). In the nine events, the significant chain of purchases and ser-vices has strengthened the links between the partners of the group, the responsi-ble company and its main suppliers.

In each of these meetings, Grup Gamma exposes atten-dees sector needs, changes in the trend of demand and mar-ket developments through interesting presentations. In addition, some of the most important manufacturers in the sector showed their latest products. Thus, an excellent opportunity to strengthen linkages with a selection of leading brands.

Among the brands that have participated in the suc-cessive Grup Gamma conven-tions are ceramic companies as Stylnul, Cicogres or Elías; kitchens providers like Top Form; companies like Grohe and Royo Group, specialized in the bathroom equipment; or manufacturers as Dano-sa, La Escandella and Grupo Puma. F ine ceramics are focusing on the as-pects of energy effi-ciency and resource

conservation. In the past three years, there has been a great deal of optimization work in the entire process chain. The results will be on display at Ceramitec 2015 on the exhibition grounds of Messe München from 20 to 23 October.

Processing technologies for fine ceramics have under-gone further development through the adaptation of established machine tech-nology to the specific tasks of the ceramic technology and its raw and processed materials. The reduction of the processing time of sani-tary slurries from five days to a maximum of one day, achieved by using high-per-formance dispersing mixers, is one example that is worth mentioning. Another advan-tage is that fewer temporary additives are required and casting times are influenced positively.

The optimized prepara-tion of color pigments for conversion into ceramic inks in ceramic-coated agi-tator bead mills has clearly advanced the printing stabi-lity and lifetime of inks for digital tile decoration. As a result, cost reductions have become possible.

The last few years have witnessed the introduction of digital tile decoration on a large scale. Meanwhile, more than 4000 ink jet printers have been installed world-wide. Digital glazing, which is currently in the market launch phase, is the logical continuation of it. This pro-cedure will contribute to the advancement of production on demand, which is inde-pendent from lot sizes. At the same time, it enables tile manufacturers to increase their level of individual cus-

technology and production flexibility. Therefore, these topics can be presented with convincing cost efficiency today.

Development work in the field of thermal processes goes hand in hand with the

perennial issue of energy efficiency. The drying of sa-nitary articles in continuous

dryers with dryer guidance system and the integration into the logistics processes

of the production plant, for example, represent a new way of efficient

sanitary production. Ener-gy management systems of kiln manufacturers have hel-ped achieve energy savings

of nearly 50 percent over the past 10 years.

In ceramics production, thermal processes require the greatest quantities of energy. Meanwhile, howe-ver, it is the current practice to analyze all steps of the process chain and each ma-chine carefully with a view to energy requirements in order to exploit the full opti-mization potentialities.

chnology, topics which were shown as a development trend at ceramitec as early as 20 years ago will be presen-ted in a new shape. For diffe-rent reasons, they could not establish themselves on an industrial scale at that time.

In the field of tableware production, for example, one of these topics is the use of injection molding to fabrica-te cups; another topic is the use of isostatic pressing tech-nology for the production of washbasins. C lassical blue and white hues, whi-ch were used so frequently in the

past, are making a return to center stage in inspiring the latest interior design trends and adding a touch of Bohe-mian style to our interiors. This color array was formed in the Delft Ceramic School in Holland during the 17th century and has proven to be a timeless pair.

After being inspired by the Delft Ceramic School, this trend was brought to the historical kitchens and bathrooms of palaces in the 17th century. The materials were bought from China, and then constructed into tiles by Italian immigrant ar-tisans. In addition to flower motifs and traditional geo-metric styles, prominent de-sign schemes in the tiles also included landscapes with windmills, plains and seas.

C evisama 2016 has opened the an-nouncement of a new Edition of the

Design Competition by Cevi-sama Lab in two main cathe-gories: Industrial design and technological innovation of ceramic products and De-sign bathroom equipment.

The ceramic design con-test is divided in turn into “ceramic products shaped by semi-pressed” and “ceramic products formed by other methods.” Formal innova-tion and aesthetic, functio-nal innovation, decorative development, good value, safety and respect for the en-vironment shall be assessed in this mode.

The bathroom design competition is convened under the theme “New te-chnologies applied to the bathroom”. Functional and creative solutions arising from the application of new technologies without forget-ting the latest trends will be especially valued.

Each category will have two prizes of 2,000 euros to the winner and $ 1,000 for the second. Again, Cevisama Lab elects an independent jury of distinguished pro-fessionals to determine the selection of parts and the granting of awards.

The deadline for applica-tions for on line registration ends on 31 December 2015. And the deadline for receipt of parts lasts until 14 Janua-ry 2016. All the students enrolled in any school of De-sign, Fine Arts, Architecture and Engineering-national or international as well as gra-duate students and master graduates and students in this course can participate in the competition.

A lways up to speed with the latest trends in both architecture and

interior design, Porcelanosa Grupo has just subjected its showroom in Albuixech (Valencia) to a complete and comprehensive refurbish-ment. Vicente Navarro’s Va-lencian studio was in charge of the renovation. Situated in one of the main accesses to the city, the Albuixech showroom is one of the most important showrooms for both architecture and inte-rior professionals.

The refurbished area, a space of 350 metres squared is to be used for sales and as a showroom, which bring together the latest designs and constructive solutio-ns by Porcelanosa’s eight firms. With regard to the showroom’s refurbishment, Vicente Navarro opted for the creation of a central po-int with its own personality, one which gets to show the wide range of products.

Furthermore, state-of-the-art floor tiles have been used, such as Natural Stone in lar-ge format, Linkfloor, Urbatek, Ston-ker and the ceramic par-quet Par-ker. In order to make the exhibition areas stand out, zenithal lighting has been chosen in the more cen-tral areas by means of using an energy-saving system.

Additionally, the studio in charge of the refurbish-ment has tried to integrate the structure with the rest of the space in the showroom, and an example of that can be seen in both the recep-

tion and technical areas for professionals, with a design similar to that of a boule-vard made up of slides of di-fferent products, appealing to those who prefer to wan-der around the showroom whilst discovering the very latest news about Porcelano-sa Group’s eight firms.

FOOD TRUCK IN PARISPorcelanosa has also laun-ched the Emotions kitchens by Gamadecor in order to make this technically supe-rior innovative collection be known through an original staging: a culinary roadshow along the streets of the Fren-ch city. During June 17th and 18th a see-through vehi-cle equipped with Emotions kitchen furniture, specially designed for that occasion, was driven along the streets of Paris in order to show all the functionalities the new Gamadecor kitchens have.

A chef was the person in charge of the preparation of different recipes, which were shown to the visitors live, and they were offered a delicious haute cuisine tasting as well. The starting point of this roadshow was the 45 rue du Bac Porcelanosa showroom and the 60 or so journalists gathered there were able to experience the quality of the materials and components that Emotions kitchens have to offer at first hand. Furthermore, Coverlam is structurally reinforced by means of a glass fibre mesh 0.5 mm thick adhering to the back, endowing it with

optimal mechanical streng-th. It is made in pieces mea-suring 3 m x 1 m, which are rectified and available in a variety of shapes and sizes, made by dividing up the ini-tial piece using an automa-ted cutting system.

Coverlam is considerably easier to cut and handle and notably reduces the logistical costs of packing and trans-port. Coverlam is resistant to bending, UV light, attack by chemicals, wear, fire and frost. Coverlam is recycla-

Day. This edition’s theme, Feeding the planet, has not pre-vented major international non-food companies from taking their place in this world event alongside the pavilions rich in typical food from all over the world.

Vanke, the Chinese re-sidential real estate giant, was only one of the many companies at Expo 2015 in Milan. A great company, for which a great architect, Da-niel Libeskind, has created a pavilion inspired by China’s tradition, philosophy, and history dotted with “mis-ty mountains, rivers, hills, and sinuous dragons” to use Libeskind’s words.

cut into two 60x60 units – do not end here. In fact, these slabs have a three-dimensio-nal fractal pattern and are the result of a sophisticated industrial procedure, which includes glazing and firing processes at 1250 °C, using carefully selected mixtures of clays, quartz and feldspar. Oxide saturated metallic gla-zes provide the ceramic sur-face with a dynamic colour-changing effect. The special colour was developed speci-fically for this project in the Casalgrande Padana colouri-meter laboratory.

Italian brand’s work has been instrumental in the completion of the Vanke Pa-vilion within the set deadli-nes (it was the first pavilion to be handed to Expo). A ma-jestic operation, especially considering the complexity of the processes involved.

After completing the fra-me and installing the steel bracing struts, the horizontal corrugated sheet metal ele-ments were fitted in, and the insulating core of the casing, made with mineralised wood fibre panels, was secured in place. Finally, a layer of sho-tcrete was applied on top of the support reinforcement.

The volume of the pavilion enables the installation of a metal substructure for an-choring the ceramic cladding developed by Libeskind and Casalgrande Padana. H Studio Libeskind worked with the structural engineers at Ramboll UK.

I nternationalization is a key aspect within the Germans Boada Group and Rubi’s philosophy

on this results in a very sig-nificant international pre-sence. The process of inter-nationalization by Rubi has always been characterised by combining medium-term projects and long-term pro-jects. At the same time, the company has always tried to reconcile shares expansion in mature markets with sha-res in emerging markets.

For international long-term vision, Germans Boa-da has initiated a project to study different ways to improve it’s position in the Asian market. The macro-economic data shows that the potential of the Asian market is very important. Population, current and fu-ture growth and the rate of economic growth, combi-ned with consumption data in ceramic tiles, make Asia a very attractive market but highly complex.

CHINESE AND INDIAN MARKETRubi have launched an in-depth study of the major markets, which adds to the direct presence in the Chine-

brands, both of which are leaders in their respective market segments, under the same umbrella.

The acquisition will allow the Germans Boada group to introduce new lines of busi-ness which will be developed under the Kanguro brand in various economic sectors.

The Germans Boada group, which manufactures tools for fitting ceramics under their trademark Rubi, has recently announced the acquisition of Kanguro, with a produc-tion plant in Alicante.

With the addition of this brand to its product por-tfolio, the Germans Boada group is strengthening its global leadership in the ma-nufacture and sale of tools, appliances and machinery for the construction sector, with a high level of specia-lisation in the cutting and application of ceramics.

The purchase of Kanguro by the group and the creation of a new company, Boada Kanguro S.L, will strengthen the international presence of the rubber construction pro-ducts manufactured by the company in Alicante. Rubi’s strong international pre-sence, with subsidiaries and

branches in Europe, Ameri-ca, Asia and Africa, will be used to roll out the range of rubber products in the main international markets.

Following the incorpo-ration of Kanguro, the Germans Boada group has announced its intention to increase investment in in-novation and internationa-lisation in the coming years both for the range of rubber products aimed at the cons-truction sector and for the other lines of business of the Alicante firm.

In undertaking this acqui-sition, a particularly high value was placed on the po-sitioning and reputation of the Kanguro brand as well as the complementary nature of its lines of business with the RUBI® product portfolio. The excellent commercial synergies envisaged and an-ticipated growth potential

were key to finalising this acquisition.

The Germans Boada Group is currently present in more than 130 countries; it has nine of its own subsi-diaries, eight branches and two production plants. With a workforce of close to 300 people, exports of over 85% of its total sales and a conso-lidated turnover of around 55 million euros, the group, through its trademark Rubi, is the international leader in tools for fitting ceramic pro-ducts.

Its solid growth in the last few years will undoubtedly be further strengthened in the near future by the in-corporation of Kanguro and its various lines of business, which range from construc-tion products to urban equi-pment, not forgetting its product ranges for agricultu-re and farming. H

I n this article Fila ex-plains how to clean your wood-effect porce-lain tiles, one of today’s

most popular flooring mate-rials, which over the last ten years has seen an increasin-gly more refined evolution in the reproduction of the natural grain of wood.

It is in these very grain that dirt tends to stick and is often difficult to clean. To solve this problem, Fila has devised products to guaran-tee cleaning and protection against dirt for your floor in wood-effect porcelain tiles.

FILA DETERDEKThe first thing to do is make sure that the floor is really clean, with thorough remo-val of that at times almost invisible film that inevitably forms after laying of this kind of tile. It is therefo-re indispensable to use an acid detergent like Deterdek for the initial cleaning, the only product that eliminates all kinds of laying residues (glue, grouting, concrete,…) and guarantees correct ini-tial cleaning.

How to use? First of all, wet the floor with a little water, then pour a dilution of De-terdek and hot water (1 litre of product every 5 of water). Work on just a few metres at a time, wait 2-3 minutes and

Fila offers a complete range of certified products, devised for professional treatment specialists and also suitable, thanks to their effectiveness and ease of use, for end users.

rub hard with a flat brush (or single-brush machine). Finally, mop up the residues with a cloth and complete by rinsing with plenty of water.

FILACLEANERFor daily cleaning of the floor, it is important to use a neutral detergent that does not leave any residue on the surface. For this reason, we recommend using FilaClea-ner, a delicate yet effective product, ideal for ordinary maintenance of floors in wood-effect porcelain tiles.

Normal detergents, on the other hand, often contain

Dilute 25 ml (three ca-pfuls) of FilaCleaner in 5 litres of water and clean the floor. FilaCleaner leaves no residues, does not require rinsing and can be used on any kind of surface.

FilaCleaner is the detergent recommended by over 200 manufacturers of porcelain and ceramic tiles and sto-ne, who endorse it in their catalogues for maintenance of their products. But that’s not all, Assoposa, the Italian association of companies of layers and installers of ce-ramic tiles, recommends Fi-laCleaner and the other FILA detergents because they are effective and respect both materials and grouting.

FILASTop DIRTAfter cleaning your wood-effect tiles, we recommend protecting them with Fi-laStop Dirt, a truly effective product that creates a ba-rrier against dirt and the-refore making everyday maintenance easier. FilaStop Dirt creates no surface film, it chemically binds to the material without altering its original appearance, it pre-vents dirt from becoming stuck in the fake grains of wood-effect porcelain tiles, it helps to stop water pooling and makes cleaning of the surface itself easier. T he 2014 figures for the Italian ceramic industry were un-veiled at the Con-

findustria Ceramica 2015 Members’ Meeting held on 9 June this year.

In the year to 31 December 2014 there were 223 manu-facturers of ceramic tiles, sanitaryware, tableware and refractory materials opera-ting in Italy with 25,598 em-ployees and a total turnover of 5.687 billion euros, 75% of which was generated by exports.

The tile sector continued to account for the majority of turnover at 4.91 billion euros, while the other three segments generated a com-bined turnover of 773 mi-llion euros.

In 2014 the Italian tile industry consisted of 150 companies (6 fewer than in 2013) with 19,430 emplo-yees (1,107 fewer than in

Vittorio Borelli pointed out, this was due to the industry’s ability to further raise its average selling price, which now stands at 12.45 €/sq.m (2.6% up on 2013). Export turnover rose by 6.2% to 4.11 billion euros, with an avera-ge price of 13.1 €/sq.m (2.5% up on 2013).

This result more than com-pensated for the further fall in turnover in the domestic market (804 million euros, -6.1%), allowing the sector to close the year with a to-tal turnover of 4.91 billion euros (+4%).

The sector’s export share reached a record figure of 83.6% in value and 79.5% in volume.

As Borelli noted, the increa-se in average selling price is a direct result of companies’ efforts in the field of product innovation, which enables them to offer products with ever greater added value (to-

2013) and a total output of 381.7 million square meters (5% up on 2013).

Like the previous year, the sector’s sales exceeded production, allowing it to take a further step towards the gradual rebalancing of warehouse stock. Total sales amounted to 394.6 million sq.m (+1.3%). While the do-mestic market experienced a further downturn to 80.8 million sq.m (6.6% down on 2013), the export mar-kets continued to recover reaching 313.7 million sq.m (+3.6%).

day this means primarily lar-ge and very large sizes). It is no coincidence that 2014 set another record in terms of technological investments, which at 286.2 million euros absorbed almost 6% of the sector’s total turnover. This was a 27% increase on 2013 and the highest value since 2008. The trend is conti-nuing this year with invest-ments estimated at 250 mi-llion euros.

uninterruPted growthMeanwhile in 2014 China su-ffered its first setback in ex-ports, though is remaining well ahead of other ceramics tile exporter countries.

After 10 years of uninte-rrupted growth culminating in record exports of 1,095 mi-llion sq.m in 2013, volumes dropped by 2.9% last year to 1,063 million sq.m (a reduc-tion of 32 million sq.m).

The breakdown of Chinese

exports by large geographi-cal areas shows that sales increased only in Africa and Oceania (by 5.7% and 12.7%, respectively). China suffered a decline in exports to all other areas of the world, in-cluding Asia where they fell for the second year running (-2.6% in 2013 and -3% in 2014) to reach 552.6 million sq.m, 52% of total Chinese exports.

Sales also declined shar-ply in South America (99.8 million sq.m, -22.8%), largely due to the downturn in Bra-zil (-46%), while exports to North America remained vir-tually stable at 82.1 million sq.m (-0.8%) in spite of the fall in sales in the United Sta-tes (46.8 million sq.m,-2.8%).

As for Europe, Chinese ex-ports not only fell for the four-th year running in EU markets (24.5 million sq.m, -7.7%) but also suffered the first decline in non-EU Europe (22.1 mi-llion sq.m, -10.8%). H

E FI Cretaprint fina-lized in early June its official partici-pation in Ceramics

China, the most important fair in Asia for suppliers of machinery, inks and glazes for ceramic industries. The company has attended the event for the fifth time: the first two years came as Cre-taprint; and the last three, after the result of the acqui-sition by EFI, has attended with its current name.

In China, EFI Cretaprint has a permanent structure of more than 70 people in different cities. Furthermo-re, in Foshan has a team that provides comprehensive te-chnical support to the vario-us Chinese ceramic clusters.

In the recent edition of Ce-ramics China, in addition to presenting the new digital ceramic inkjet printers, the brand has completed the offer called EFI Ecosystem composed of its advanced pr-inters to the tile industry, its ceramic inks and the color management software. With this pack, Cretaprint EFI pro-vides an integral service for Spanish and international ceramic industry.

‘CRETAPRINT C4’Engineered with a new ink system and electronics, the Cretaprint C4 printer ensures highly accurate performance in all production conditions. It is designed for ease of use, lower maintenance costs and energy savings. The C4 is available with a larger selec-tion of print heads to match with your ink type or digital application, so you can pro-duce differentiated, innova-tive and unique products.

The new ink system allows a faster and easier refilling without spillage. Ink chan-ges are faster with easily and fully extractable ink tanks. This new system uses fewer heaters and no stirrers and

printing bars. Bars are indi-vidual and can be pulled out if required, making all the components accessible for maintenance tasks. Bars se-paration has been optimized for a highly efficient steam and mist extraction, without compromising printing qua-lity. Vacuum bar height and jetting distance adjustments are now automated.

Individual electronics cards are fully protected for any printhead. Image uploads are faster and the user can modify settings on

the fly for small re-adjust-ments during production.

The C4 printer includes additional features, such as TAS (Tone Adjustment Sys-tem), linearization or ink consumption calculation. TAS is based on an intuitive interface that guides the user through the study process and application changes in tone or intensity to apply to a model. These features, availa-ble with all of Cretaprint ma-chines, enable adjustments or variations on existing mo-dels in the system without the use of additional soft-ware or extensive knowledge in color management.

Another advanced solu-tion is Fiery proServer, the first complete color management system for ceramic tile deco-ration. proServer produces the most accurate and con-sistent color quality for ce-ramic tile decoration and lo-wers your ink consumption, regardless of the production conditions. H

the tubing design makes the system anti-settling. The re-verse flow can be switched on simply by pressing a bu-tton on the display.

C erurbis is a Euro-pean project hea-ded in Spain by Castellón Town

Council, Ascer and the Ins-titute of Ceramic Technolo-gy (ITC). Its main aim is to promote and disseminate the use of ceramic materials in urban areas through jo-int initiatives by ceramic manufacturing clusters in southwest Europe (SUDOE), bringing sophistication to ceramic materials through the integration of high tech-nology.

At the same time, Cerur-bis aspires to create innova-tive products, methods and services with a high added value that can be immedia-tely transferred to the rest of the industrial fabric. These services combine competiti-ve intelligence studies with strategic analysis methods with a view to seeking effi-cient innovation, without overlooking user tastes and requirements and social and technological trends.

In late 2014, the initial results of the project were

T he countdown has started with the presentation of the Technical Commit-

tee, charged with watching over the quality and innova-tion of the submitted work.

The presentation event, which brought together nu-merous representatives from the ceramic and related sec-tors, took place on the 3rd of June at the Castellón Official College of Industrial Engi-neers. Over 50 internationa-lly recognised personalities from the ceramic industry and related sectors, as well as from the field of research, sit on the Technical Com-mittee charged with evalua-ting the level of quality and innovation of the work sub-mitted for the 14th Qualicer Congress in Castellon.

The Qualicer Technical Committee is made up of an extensive team of exper-ts, with a multidisciplina-ry character, from over 10 countries, recruited after intense contact through vi-sits to the major trade shows and international forums of the sector.

The committee members mostly come from the ce-ramic industry and related sectors, such as the machi-nery, glaze, or frit branches, belong to prestigious tech-nology institutes, or conduct

panel debates of the greatest interest. Block A will include a panel debate on the globa-lisation of ceramic quality. The already confirmed panel members are Zeynep Bodur Okyay, Kale Group President and CEO; John Turner Jr, Dal-Tile President; Vittorio Borelli, Fincibec CEO and Chairman of Confindustria Ceramica; and Fernando Roig, Chairman of the Pame-sa Group.
