Homeward Bound is not the Disney movie about pets trying to find their way home! Homeward Bound provides transional housing and programs to help families in Phoenix that are experi- encing poverty. Programs offered to families living in Homeward Bound include GED tutoring, help with budgeng, self-esteem, and parenng. On their campus, Homeward Bound has an early learning center called Strong Foundaons. Strong Foundaons serves children ages six weeks to five years old. At Strong Foundaons, children aend full-me childcare and learn skills important for resiliency. Early Head Start is available in the younger classrooms. Most children that aend Strong Foundaons either live with their families at Homeward Bound or were referred to Strong Foundaons from the Department of Child Safety. Some children at Strong Foundaons are experiencing poverty, domesc violence, or other trauma. As an intern, I assisted the teachers in one of the preschool classrooms. At Strong Foundaons there is a large emphasis on using appropriate language and a posive tone with the children. The teachers do not yell at children and tell them “no”. You tell the children what they are supposed to do and use redirecon, instead of telling children what not to do. I engaged children in developmentally appropriate acvies and play, and helped them learn social skills and boundaries. My second internship was with two elementary schools in Scosdale Unified School District. As an intern, I assisted the school psychologist at each school. At Cherokee I assisted with the Universal Screening of all first through fiſth grade students in reading fluency. Students that were idenfied from the screening as at risk were placed into an intervenon called Head Sprouts. Every week I would assess the first and second grade students placed into the reading intervenon to monitor their progress in reading fluency. I would do this by having each student read a story for a minute, and counng how many words they read correctly. I also got to observe parent-faculty meengs. Usually at these meengs the school psychologist, speech therapist, physical therapist, and occupaonal therapist met with the parents of a child to discuss the child’s progress and their goals for their child. At Sequoya I made Excel graphs of the data from the Univer- sal Screening for all first through fiſth grade teachers. Addionally, I assisted the special educaon teachers with their students in the Learning Resource Center. I helped the students in the Learning Resource Center with their classwork, and made sure they stayed on task. Why did you choose the site where you completed your internship? Discuss how the site fit in with your career/academic goals. I chose both Strong Foundaons and Scosdale Unified School District because I want to work with young children in a classroom. I wanted to be able to apply what I was learning in my psychology classes to an ac- tual real-world seng. My future career goal is to become a school psychologist, so I wanted to gain experi- ence working in the field before I applied to graduate school. It is important to get clinical experience be- fore graduate school to make sure you want to work in a parcular field. It is beneficial to gain experience applying what you are learning from classes while working with children in a fast-paced seng. What did you like most about working at your site? What acvies/responsibilies did you enjoy and learn the most from? My favorite part of working at both sites was working with the children. It was really inspiring to see the children make progress, and being a small part of that. I am inspired and encouraged by the children I worked with from Strong Foundaons. They were experiencing trauma in their lives, but were sll so excit- ed to learn and were some of the most caring children I have ever met. When I conducted the weekly read- ing fluency assessments with the children at Cherokee, it made me happy to see the children’s progress at the end of the semester. It’s really inspiring watching the students improve in their reading fluency. Some of the children could only read a few words during the Universal Screening. It was amazing to see them be able to read sentences at the end of the semester. When I conducted the weekly reading fluency assess- ments, one boy would constantly ask me if he could connue reading the assessment passage aſter his one- minute assessment was up. He told me that he enjoyed reading, and wanted to know how each story end- ed. Another boy I assessed smiled and got really excited when I told him he read a lot of words aſter he fin- ished his assessment. When I was their age, I did not enjoy reading because I struggled when learning how to read. I had to be placed into reading intervenon as well when I was in elementary school. I am amazed that the children I assessed did not let their struggle with learning how to read stop them from enjoying learning. What skills/knowledge did you gain at your internship that you will carry with you in your career path? One skill I learned during my internships is how to communicate beer with children. I also learned how to be flexible and problem solve with children. Addionally, I learned how to have more paence. When work- ing with the children in the Learning Resource Center, they somemes didn’t understand the problem the first me I explained it, so I had to come up with different ways to explain the informaon to them. I en- joyed working with a diverse populaon of students. Some of the students in the Learning Resource Center had ADHD, and a couple students were selecve mute. It was rewarding to learn how to apply concepts from my Learning and Movaon class and my Clinical Psychology class when helping the students with their assignments. One example is that I got to observe how the special educaon teachers used a token economy with their students. Discuss your career goals and what your next steps are aſter you complete your Psychology degree. I graduate from ASU this May. I hope to go to a graduate school program for school psychology. Ideally, I want to create and implement intervenons and prevenon programs in schools to help children experi- encing poverty or trauma. Parc- ipants will be contacted to confirm a day/me for the experiment. The experiment takes about 2 hours but will somemes finish sooner so please select only 2 hour blocks in the doodle poll. The experiment is done on the ASU Tempe Campus (next to the bookstore). The experiment is tesng propriocepon using a robot to move the parcipant's arm to different posions and then the parcipant decides if they think the posion is the same or different than the starng posion. Internship Sites: Homeward Bound and Scottsdale Unified School District’s Cherokee Elementary School and Sequoya Elementary School

Give an overview of your site and what you did while interning there.

Homeward Bound is not the Disney movie about pets trying to find their way home!

Homeward Bound provides transitional housing and programs to help families in Phoenix that are experi-encing poverty. Programs offered to families living in Homeward Bound include GED tutoring, help with budgeting, self-esteem, and parenting. On their campus, Homeward Bound has an early learning center called Strong Foundations. Strong Foundations serves children ages six weeks to five years old. At Strong Foundations, children attend full-time childcare and learn skills important for resiliency. Early Head Start is available in the younger classrooms. I chose both Strong Foundations and Scottsdale Unified School District because I want to work with young children in a classroom. I wanted to be able to apply what I was learning in my psychology classes to an ac-tual real-world setting. My future career goal is to become a school psychologist, so I wanted to gain experi-ence working in the field before I applied to graduate school. It is important to get clinical experience be-fore graduate school to make sure you want to work in a particular field. It is beneficial to gain experience applying what you are learning from classes while working with children in a fast-paced setting.

What did you like most about working at your site? What activities/responsibilities did you enjoy and learn the most from?
