ANNUAL REPORT 2011
The Australian Youth Orchestra presents over a dozen tailored training and performance programs each year for aspiring musicians, composers, arts administrators and music journalists aged 12 to 30. Our training pathway has been created to nurture the musical development of Australia’s finest young instrumentalists across metropolitan and regional Australia: from the emerging, gifted school-aged student, to those on the verge of a professional career.

OUR MISSION
Australian Youth Orchestra Annual Report 2011
4
A new cycle of development began for the AYO in 2011, building towards the forthcoming International Tour in 2013, to be led by Christoph Eschenbach, one of the most charismatic conductors in the world today.
The journey towards that goal began in fine style with an AYO National Music Camp in January 2011 that was bursting with energy under the directorship of Paul Dean, together with international conductors James Judd and Edwin Outwater, and chamber orchestra director Dale Barltrop. The conductors were in sync with the challenge that Paul set down at the very beginning of Camp: to restore the inspirational power and visceral excitement of orchestral music for contemporary audiences. The Camp’s culminating concerts gained excitement from a choice of repertoire that provided the optimal mix of challenge and reward, and the participants benefitted greatly from the committed assistance and support of the tutor grouping meeting those challenges.
The members of the Australian Youth Orchestra returned to Adelaide a few weeks later, this time under the direction of exciting young comductor, Perry So. His dynamic style and thrilling program selections maintained the vivacious tempo of Music Camp, and made the concerts in Adelaide and Melbourne memorable events for the young players as well as attracting a highly enthusiastic audience response.
The second season of the AYO took the players deep into the musical world of esteemed Danish conductor Thomas Dausgaard and the composer he is strongly linked to, fellow Dane, Carl Nielsen. The concerts at the Sydney Opera House also included a new concerto by the fine Australian composer Carl Vine, with soloist Dene Olding, commissioned for the AYO and Dene by The Hon. Jane Mathews AO, lending an added air of excitement to the three performance dates.
The three programs I have mentioned represent just part of the AYO’s annual schedule, and they were supplemented in 2011 by a package of activities and programs reaching far and wide into the community base of Australia’s musical life.
The 2011 Season demonstrated again the artistic vibrancy for which the Australian Youth Orchestra is internationally renowned. This success is founded upon a sound administrative and financial base, and a network of highly-regarded professional musicians, administrators and experts in related fields that reaches throughout the world. I wish to sincerely thank our CEO, Colin Cornish for the drive and initiative he has brought to his role, and to the hard-working staff of the organisation who realised the wide range of AYO’s programs reaching across the Australian continent in 2011.
The AYO also draws considerable strength from the dedicated attention of my fellow Directors and the supporting committees and councils that give generously of their time to advise and assist our management and staff.
2011 was a year characterized by a sense of dynamism and growth. To maintain this level of activity and ambition for the AYO’s role in Australian music, we receive significant support from the Federal Government, and we are grateful for the positive interest towards our activities demonstrated by the Minister for the Arts, Hon Simon Crean. The Federal Government’s investment is complemented by the support of Arts New South Wales, and a range of corporate sponsors and donors, including our Principal Sponsor, Accenture and Major Programs Partner, The Colonial Foundation. A range of individuals, charities and corporate supporters provide funding to make it possible for talented young musicians to participate in the AYO’s programs through a number of scholarships. This continues to be an important area of focus for our organisation to ensure that AYO opportunities remain available to young musicians of every background.

FROM THE CHAIR
Australian Youth Orchestra Annual Report 20115
The Australian Youth Orchestra drew 340 young musicians from all over Australia to participate in the fourteen mainstream programs offered in 2011. These programs provide opportunities to develop musical skills to the highest level. To reach the most talented young musicians from across the whole of Australia, auditions for our 2011 programs were held widely throughout all the capital and major regional cities.
Throughout the year, our programs strive to support a developmental progress among participants, catering for skill development from basic to advanced, from individuals and small groups to full symphonic ensembles. Participants in programs are given the opportunity to work with leading musicians as tutors, conductors and directors drawn from around Australia and worldwide.
The AYO can rightly claim that it is among the world leaders in the global youth orchestra movement. This fact was given recognition in 2011 when the AYO hosted the first ever International Forum for National Youth Orchestras, a valuable opportunity to share experiences and prepare for the challenges of the future with colleagues from around the world.
As outlined in the Chair’s report, the year’s major projects were the AYO National Music Camp and the two seasons of the Australian Youth Orchestra, and vitality and dynamism were the hallmarks of these events. Our Style Workshop in 2011 was directed towards the development of wind players working in ensembles large and small. This very practical focus adds an essential set of skills for wind players, expertly addressed by the tutors Jonathan Williams, Eve Newsome and Frank Celata, targetting detailed developmental work in an intelligent selection of repertoire.
String players similarly gained focussed attention through the AYO Chamber Players program, which in 2011 was held in collaboration with the second Musica Viva Festival following the success of the collaboration at the first Festival in 2008. The program featured six AYO string quartets, two of which were extant ensembles, and three newly formed AYO piano trios. Under the guidance of the members of the prestigious Takács Quartet, Eggner Trio and Goldner String Quartet, and with violinist Pekka Kuusisto as Artist in Residence, the program featured an intensive schedule of rehearsals, tutorials, In-house performances and open rehearsals. Each AYO ensemble also performed in a public masterclass as part of the Festival. The experience of learning first hand from such insightful musicians proved revelatory for the young musicians.
Emphasizing the AYO’s commitment to ensuring that its programs reach across Australia, 2011 saw regional projects involving Queensland’s Glasshouse String Quartet (with tutor Monica Curro) and Melbourne’s Zellwood String Quartet (with tutors Sarah Curro and Caroline Henbest) based at the Murray Conservatorium of Music in Albury, NSW. A string quartet was formed from a selected group of young players to undertake a residency based at Victoria’s renowned Castlemaine State Festival in April, while a quintet of young wind players worked in a similar range of activities in Tasmania, in conjunction with Ten Days on the Island.
Musicians who are on the cusp of entering professional careers were again involved in the well-established Orchestral Fellowships programs conducted jointly with the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. These programs are based on a mentorship approach, with each young musician assigned to a member of the orchestra for support, advice and tuition as they become directly involved in the professional performance environment. Culminating from these Fellowships, members of the AYO combined with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for a concert of awesome dimensions: Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra and Mahler’s ‘Titan’ Symphony.
FROM THE CEO
Australian Youth Orchestra Annual Report 2011
6
Last but by no means least, our Young Symphonists program continues to provide an invaluable and above all, exciting introduction to orchestral music-making for musicians of the younger age groups. In 2011, the program was based in Canberra. String musicians worked with director Michele Walsh, one of Australia’s most respected music educators, while wind, brass and percussion musicians worked under the leadership of TSO principal trumpet, Yoram Levy, both directors supported by a team of instrumental specialists.
The success of each of these programs would not be possible without the support of Government (the Federal Government and Arts NSW) and our program partners. We continue to benefit from the significant contribution of our Principal Sponsor, Accenture, and from support by The Colonial Foundation, Mallesons Stephen Jacques, and Downer EDI. The modest deficit incurred in our 2011 program is indicative of the need for strenuous effort to maintain our accessibility and reach through our relationships with government and corporate and individual partners.
I continue to gain inspiration from the coalescence of contributions by a wide range of individuals and communities towards a shared aim which is a hallmark of the AYO. Throughout Australia’s music industry, the staff of the AYO is renowned for the dedication and unflagging energy they bring to the unending task of maintaining a high level of activity across a wide reach of geography and scale. I am also grateful to the Chairman, Mary Vallentine AO and the Board of Directors for their continuing leadership, passion and dedication to the AYO.
