T hroughout this annual

report you will see many ways your support of Stratford Hall continues to make a difference. You have a direct impact on our

overall mission. Our expanded efforts in education, research, and preservation would not be possible without your help. On behalf of the Board of Directors and our dedicated staff, I thank you for your contribution.

There are many exciting projects currently being worked on and still more on the drawing board. Following The Lee Heritage Interpretive Plan, we are in the process of restoring the parlor, with completion scheduled for fall 2012. The Historic Structure Report, which compiled the history of all past research into one document, completed this year by Mesick, Cohen, Wilson, Baker, Architects of Albany, New York, will help guide this ongoing work in the Great House. If you have not visited since the restoration of the Southwest Outbuilding and the Slave Quarters, and the reconstruction of the Northwest Stair Passage, I urge you to do so.

The Cultural Landscape Study, being done in partnership with the University

of Georgia and The Jaeger Company of Gainesville, is scheduled to be completed in 2012. This information will help determine the future restoration of the gardens and other landscape features.

At the duPont Library, work is underway on preparing a digital catalog of Stratford’s holdings for The Founding Fathers Library Consortium that will include Stratford Hall, Mount Vernon and Gunston Hall’s library collections catalogs.

Both the Education and Collections departments are continuing work on the Rediscovering the Historic House study to determine how best to integrate technology with tours that will interest our visitors. We serve as the lead in this project and are working with seven other historical sites from fi ve states.

Our emphasis on organic farming is starting to take shape. In a cooperative effort with Stoneleigh Farms of Warrenton, Virginia, we now have 50 beehives which are producing Stratford honey in the Cliff fi eld. And the honey is being sold in our gift shop.

While all these projects will have signifi cant impact for Stratford in the future, we continue to focus attention on our educational programs, growing and expanding them to provide a meaningful experience for our guests. Whether it is the annual Robert E. Lee Symposium on Civil War History or Grandparent/

Grandchild summer camps, these programs help us reach our goals of attracting and educating a diverse audience.

Planning, by both our staff and Board of Directors, is critical to make these projects and programs possible. In April, the Board of Directors thoroughly reviewed our strategic plan, assigning importance and diffi culty levels to each and every project. I think this extensive review, along with your support, will help keep Stratford moving forward.

T he past year has seen an

out-pouring of books about the decline of America—all purporting either to explain why it’s happening or to provide

prescriptions on what to do about it. Pages of the “decline” books are devoted to strategies for dealing with China’s recent economic and political ascendancy. These books are part pseudo-history and part self-help manuals, but none of them seem to me to be very convincing, not only because they all predict what hasn’t yet happened, but also because they all fail to grasp the origins and complexities of the American political system.

Harvard professor and former 2008 Stratford Hall Lee Circle speaker, Niall Ferguson, makes a strong case for the need to re-embrace traditional Western values in his new book Civilization, and credits the “Protestant ethic”—reinforced by signifi cant works of literature—for bringing about Western cultural and economic dominance. Co-authors Tom Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum based their new book’s title, That Used to Be Us, on a remark by President Obama about China’s apparent ability to accomplish big things. Especially frustrating to Friedman and Mandelbaum is the lack of national unity in this country over critical issues, such as infrastructure improvements, challenges faced by our educational system, and the excessive power currently in the hands of bankers and lawyers. Friedman and Mandelbaum’s answer to these concerns is the creation of a third party that would reclaim the political center and advocate for common sense solutions.

It is hard to dispute any of these authors’ assertions. Traditional Western values do appear to be in decline and our nation has not been making smart investments in infrastructure. What troubles me about these books is their historicism—the notion that somehow the trends that will shape the future are already in sight. This idea was best dismissed by philosopher Karl Popper who wrote, “What we know next will change what happens next, and we can’t know what we’ll know next, since if we could, we’d know it now.”

Neither Ferguson nor Friedman and Mandelbaum adequately accounts for the real origin of our inability to deal with these issues: our inherited political system. The debates surrounding the ratifi cation of our Constitution were driven by the competing views of the Federalists, who believed in the power of a strong central government, and the Antifederalists, who were afraid that a strong central government would adversely affect individual liberty. We all know who won the argument over ratifi cation. What is more important, however, is how the views of these two groups shaped the political system that emerged by the fi rst decade of the nineteenth century—and the one we live with yet today.

The Federalists believed not only in a strong central government, but also in a government led by educated gentlemen who were wealthy enough to ensure that they would be “disinterested” in personal gain. The Antifederalists feared that it was impossible for disinterested gentlemen to sympathize with the wants of the common people and ignore their own local and personal interests. Our nation’s fi rst president, George Washington, is undoubtedly the best example of a “disinterested gentleman.” Washington managed to work with both

factions in uniting a nation. Many have wished to emulate his character, but none have ever succeeded and perhaps never will.

Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee was a staunch Federalist and supporter of the proposed Constitution, as well as of the role of “disinterested” gentlemen in political leadership. His Stratford kinsman, Richard Henry Lee, was an Antifederalist who insisted that a Bill of Rights be added and was perhaps skeptical that the rights of states and citizens would be protected from federal power. Richard Henry’s election to the fi rst United States Senate refl ected the large number of Antifederalists in Virginia. While some semblance of the Federalist system survived into the early 19th century, the election of Thomas Jefferson as president in 1800 sealed its doom. Noting the limitations of the Federalist view of politics, historian Gordon Wood wrote, “To the extent that the Constitution was designed to control and transcend common ordinary men with their common pecuniary interests, it was clearly something of a failure.”

It is central to our mission here at Stratford Hall to help our visitors understand the complicated political system that evolved from the colonial period through the early years of the Republic. The Lees were central architects of that system and, through them, we can come to understand the challenges they faced and how they might inform our challenges today.

Education

A bigail Newkirk joined the Stratford Hall staff in July 2010 as the

Director of Interpretation & Education. This position oversees the interpretive staff of the Great House, Visitor Center attendants, and Gatekeepers; oversees the school programs, group tours, summer camps; assists with the development of the calendar of programs; and implements the interpretive goals of Stratford Hall.

Building off the success of FY2010, the calendar of events, school programs, guided tours, and summer camps continue to expand and attract a diverse audience to Stratford Hall in 2011.

The twenty-two programs offered in FY2011 continued to support the vision statement of Stratford Hall: “Stratford Hall will be a compelling destination where a diverse audience will participate in innovative, unique educational and recreational activities that inspire intellectual curiosity, a passion for history and active citizenship.” Programs link the community to our mission and demonstrate our efforts to deepen the meaning and relevance of Stratford Hall to a wider audience.

The following are examples of the events offered in FY2011 and how they refl ect elements of the Stratford Hall vision. To cultivate in the public a passion for history: 3 rd Annual Robert E Lee Symposium: the Battle of Chancellorsville (January 28-30), Women in Lee’s Life (March 11), and Traditional Trades Fair (May 21).

Promoting active citizenship: Refl ections on Black History (February 25) and 2 nd Payne Family Reunion (June 25), and the fi rst Stratford Hall Agricultural Summit (March 11). Offering unique educational experiences: Music of the Lees (October 2), Northern Neck Cultural Landscape Symposium (October 22-24), Boxwood Tree Workshop with Don Haynie (December 11). Themed recreational activities: 3 rd Annual Chesapeake Wine and Harvest Festival (September 25-26), Annual Easter Egg Hunt (April 23), Historical Haunts (October 30), and Lees and Independence (June 5).

On March 11, 2011, Stratford Hall hosted the fi rst Agricultural Summit. The summit featured prominent agricultural

leaders from across Virginia and the Northern Neck. The keynote address was presented by Matt Lohr, Commissioner of Agriculture for Virginia. Mr. Lohr echoed the commitment of Virginia political leadership in fostering and preserving the agricultural way of life in the Northern Neck. Executive Director Paul Reber also presented his vision for implementing agricultural initiatives at Stratford Hall. Eight state and regional leaders shared their insight, understanding, and interpretation with 50 local farmers who came to hear and be heard.

On May 21, 2011, the fi rst Traditional Trades Fair was held at Stratford Hall. In celebration of Preservation Month, hundreds of visitors were treated to

Expanded hands-on activities in the school programs during the year brought favorable comments from both students and teachers. The school program saw a 50 percent increase in attendance in the March through June period over the previous year.

Programs link the community to our mission and demonstrate our eff orts to deepen the meaning and

relevance of Stratford Hall to a wider audience.

unique opportunities and saw fi rsthand the “way it once was.” The event brought over 40 craftsmen, demonstrators and artisans to present a world very different than the one seen today. The craftsmen included boat builders, a barrel maker, chocolate maker, weavers, basket makers, quilters and many more. The Traditional Trades Fair will be presented every two years, and will offer the public a small window into the lost arts and artistry of a pre-industrial age.

The descendants of William Payne have an oral tradition that his ancestors were slaves owned by Thomas Lee. The Payne reunion on June 25, 2011, saw family and friends traveling hundreds and, in one case, thousands of miles to share in this special day. It was a time for over 130 Payne family members and friends to gather once more to remember and to reconnect.

The school program attendance for spring 2011 was well above expectations and generated overwhelming positive feedback. Teachers have responded favorably to the updated program content and expanded hands-on activities

introduced this past year. While we still have more improvements underway, the comments from teachers and students have told us that we are on the right track: “We always had great experiences visiting Stratford, but this year we did more hands-on activities than previous years and the students really enjoyed it” and “Excellent enrichment and hands-on activities—unique!”

Over the course of four months (March-June), the school program attendance was 1863 (495 in March, 811 in April, 435 in May, and 122 in June). This was a 50% increase over the same four months in 2010. More important was the number of schools that traveled longer distances to get to Stratford Hall. Among the twenty schools on the schedule were Beach Elementary School (Chesapeake Beach, MD, 88 miles), Newington Forest Elementary School (Springfi eld, VA, 80 miles), and Burrows Elementary School (Quantico, VA, 66 miles). The distance schools are willing to travel is a testament to the value of our programs.

Especially considering the uncertain state of the country’s economy, we were

encouraged by the unexpected large increase in camp enrollments for 2011—over double the enrollment of 2010. There were a total of 91 campers, mostly in our own grandparent/grandchild camps. A few interested campers had to be turned away when our enrollment limit was reached. Stratford’s intergenerational Elderhostel/Road Scholar program has, for several possible reasons, attracted a lower than expected enrollment. It has been decided to discontinue participation with that organization and add a third grandparent/grandparent camp with camp offerings spread over three months. There are already a number of campers ready to enroll for next summer.

Several initiatives are underway to encourage enrollment—many of which proved successful in 2011. A $20 discount is offered to repeat campers and to family members exceeding more than two. We did, in fact, attract an increased number of campers in those categories—some camp families as large as four and some

returning for a second or third summer.Despite the unusually high heat index

during this past camp season, camper evaluations show that it did not seem to deter campers from having a great time while participating in a multitude of hands-on educational experiences. Every year we become even more convinced that one of the biggest outcomes of our camp programs is in bringing together multiple generations in a unique family bonding experience.

In addition to the calendar of programs, school visits, and summer camps, Stratford Hall welcomed thousands of individual ticketed visitors and group tours to the Great House. Stratford Hall has seen success in reaching out to senior communities and teacher training trips. Plans are underway to contact Lifelong Learners groups in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC. The team of 20 interpreters continues to offer an exemplary experience.

T he Preservation Department began two large projects this past year.

One project that was started and fi nished was the restoration of the Great House’s exterior cornice. The restoration of the cornice included the complete removal of paint on the south side cornice while the other three sides of the cornice were spot scraped. Any damaged wood was repaired and the cornice was primed and painted. The second large project that was begun was the restoration of the Parlor. The end result of this project will be the restoration of the Parlor to its Federal Period appearance when renovated by “Light Horse Harry” Lee. The architectural investigations and design phase began this year. Stratford Hall has retained Mesick, Cohen, Wilson, Baker, Architects to carry out the investigation and design of this project. The main components of the restoration will include the removal of window seats and the installation of a Federal style plaster cornice.

A project that was completed for the Preservation Department was the Historic Structures Report (HSR). This report provides an overview of Stratford Hall’s physical history during the Lees’ occupancy of the Great House. This report will be invaluable as we continue the restoration, refurnishing and reinterpretation of the Great House. The HSR was produced by Mesick, Cohen, Wilson, Baker, Architects.

Restoration work continued on the two stone Slave Quarters in the historic

area. The ongoing work has consisted of restoring the two structures’ exteriors. The east Slave Quarter was completed while work on the west Slave Quarter is still underway. Other work carried out in the historic area included the replacement of two door sills at the Coach House and the repair of an exterior door at the Great House. Other minor preventative maintenance projects were also completed around the historic area.

The Preservation Department also had another successful summer internship program. This year’s intern was Liz Christian, a graduate of the University of Bath in England. Liz’s project for the summer was the restoration of the Great House’s main fl oor windows. She was able to get a good start on this project that will carry over into next summer.

Celebrating Preservation Month in May, the Department helped the Education Department organize a Traditional Trades Fair. The fair included multiple hands-on demonstrations of the different preservation trades.

Collections

T his past year, the Collections Department made signifi cant

strides in object research and collections management, as well as developing new exhibitions in the historic area and Visitor Center. We continue to focus on improving the care and documentation of our growing collections, as well as researching and developing furnishing plans and interpretive ideas for the many exhibition areas around the site.

ExhibitsIn October 2010, new exhibits in the Slave Quarters opened to the public. Utilizing inventories and slave lists from the 1770s and 1780s, these exhibits provide visitors with access to documentation on the slave community at Stratford in the 18th century. Archaeological fragments from the area and period objects are now on display within two domestic room settings — one depicting a female family of domestic slaves and the other a group of male slaves.

Research continues into the historic use and furnishings of the Parlor in the Great House. In Spring 2011 we deinstalled the fi nal objects from the Parlor and installed many of them in a new exhibit in the Preservation Gallery of the Visitor Center. In this new Preservation Gallery exhibit visitors can now learn about the reinterpretation program happening in the Great House, as well as read more on the history of the Parlor and our ongoing investigations.

Collections staff continued using a temporary case in the Visitor Center to display thematic exhibits, installing a special display on the ongoing research of the Kitchen outbuilding, based on the work of 2010 intern Brenda Hornsby-Heindl. In the Historic Area, seasonal changes in the summer and winter helped illustrate to our visitors the ways in which the Lees and other Stratford residents lived during the warmest and coldest months of the year.

OutreachThe collections staff continues to post highlights from the collections on our Stratford Hall Facebook page on a weekly basis and the curator has developed a number of talks on our Lee family and historic collections.

Internships for 2010-2011During the academic year, we welcomed intern Townsend Hart, who worked with the Research, Education, and Collections staff on object research and related interpretive ideas. During the summer of 2011, we welcomed collections management intern Jordan Brothers, who completed an inventory of the Kitchen and Collections Storage (with related fi le/database updates), compiled information and images for our collections appraisal, and monitored the environmental levels in exhibit and storage areas.

Research

2011 Archaeology Field SchoolDirected by Dr. Douglas Sanford, the summer fi eld school in historical archaeology, which consisted of 3 veteran crew members and 10 students this year, is one of Stratford’s major research efforts. Jointly funded by the University of Mary Washington’s Center for Historic Preservation and Stratford Hall, the program has revealed exciting information about the plantation’s former inhabitants, their houses, and surrounding landscapes that would otherwise have remained hidden from the historic record. Fortunately, archaeological excavations can often provide answers to questions like “Where did the Lees store their tobacco?” when documentary information does not exist.

This past summer, the school’s participants continued excavations at a domestic site on the southwest edge of the Oval. Over the last few years, the fi eld school has uncovered four structures at the Oval site: a post-in-ground structure with an attached frame house and cellar, possibly living quarters for an overseer; another large earthfast building which was most likely a tobacco barn; and what is suspected to be a slave quarter. In conjunction with the fi eld school, crew member and doctoral candidate Andrew Wilkins (University of Tennessee), is analyzing the soil chemistry throughout the site to help identify how various areas were used historically.

Stratford Hall—A Cultural Landscape Laboratory (CLL)A collaborative venture of the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association, the University of Georgia’s College of Environment and Design, and landscape professionals from The Jaeger Company, the CLL will help to develop and implement a vision for the management and interpretation of Stratford Hall’s highly signifi cant cultural landscape. Some major milestones for the landscape study—a Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) and Site History Narrative—were recently completed. The garden and landscape data (with identifying GPS points) gleaned for the CLI will provide an initial baseline for the landscape’s condition, historic integrity, and signifi cance—all very important, particularly in light of the damage infl icted by Hurricane Irene. All information will be incorporated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) database, along with more than 300 historic maps, site plans and aerial photographs scanned from Stratford Hall’s archives. Drs. Cari Goetcheus and Eric MacDonald, from the College of Environment and Design, coordinated site visits for work on the CLI, CLL projects by graduate students, and publication of a quarterly newsletter to provide updates on the status of the Laboratory. A website for the Cultural Landscape Laboratory, which will eventually provide on-line visitors and

researchers with an ever-expanding variety of primary and secondary documents, has been launched at www.stratfordhall.info.

Nearly 4,000 rare books have been listed and barcoded in readiness for entering them into a digital catalog shared with Mount Vernon and Gunston Hall. With probably less than 1,000 volumes yet to barcode, we anticipate our rare book collection catalog being a part of The Founding Fathers Library Consortium by this time next year. Our participation in this consortium will let visitors to the website (and on site!) know what can be found in our collection, help us to locate the books faster, make it easier for researchers to access the information they need, and share resources among the three historic sites. We thank summer intern Julia Hurwitz for her herculean efforts in locating and barcoding over 2,500 rare books for the catalog project, requiring hundreds of trips up and down the steep library ladder.

The Artist Preservation Group generously funded the conservation of U. S. Grant’s Terms of Surrender document by Richmond paper conservator Mary Studt. Ms. Studt repaired splits in the folds to prevent further damage to what is clearly one of Stratford Hall’s most valuable documents. Charles Marshall gave his father’s copy of the Terms to Stratford in 1955. The donor’s father, Colonel Charles A. Marshall, was the only member of Lee’s staff present at the surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865.

I n an effort to develop more group tours, Jim Schepmoes, Director of

Marketing and Public Relations, attended the American Bus Association convention in January. Working with Virginia Tourism and Northern Neck Tourism, an information sheet was developed as a handout for ABA members. In addition, the department worked with both organizations to include group itineraries that included Stratford on their respective websites.

As the 150th anniversary of the Civil War was to bring a national media spotlight on that confl ict, the department began working with the Civil War Trails group to develop and place a marker about Robert E. Lee at Stratford Hall.

While more and more different tourism trails are being developed, the Civil War Trails group has a very strong marketing component and includes road signs as well as printed material. At the end of the fi scal year the prototype marker had been approved and installation by the group was pending.

The department participated in two grant programs that will encourage tourism to Stratford. The fi rst was a Virginia Tourism Corporation grant that Stratford partnered with Vault Field Winery and The Inn at Montross. This grant is for a website and materials that will promote the three organizations as a place to visit, eat, and stay overnight. For the second grant, Stratford partnered

with the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail on a Virginia Wine Board grant. This grant will promote the wineries of the Northern Neck while also promoting and featuring nearby historic sites.

For the triennial Coaching event held in May, the department expanded its use of electronic media to include advertising and promotion of the event on various websites and through several e-newsletter blasts. This effort was in addition to promotion and advertising through Stratford’s printed newsletter, e-newsletter and the website.

The department worked with a number of writers and publications during the year and had 27 articles and 52 photos published in 17 different publications, including the History Channel Magazine, Richmond Times Dispatch, the Free Lance-Star, American Archaeology Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens Magazine, Washington Examiner and the Virginia Horse Journal, with a total of 839.25 column inches.

Th e 150 th anniversary of the Civil War has brought a national media spotlight to the confl ict and given us an

opportunity to attract more visitors to Stratford Hall.

New wayside signage was developed and put into production as part of a marketing effort that will see Stratford Hall join the popular Civil War Trails program.

Gift ShopThe Gift Shop added new display tables, a new layout and new merchandise (including a garden section and antiques), and took orders for a new Stratford Hall rug designed by Anne Bell Robb. Books on the Lee Family, as well as titles dealing with the Northern Neck, continue to be popular sale items. The gift shop continued a long tradition of holding book signings by hosting a book signing by Albert H. Tillson, Jr., for his newly published book, Accommodating Revolutions, Virginia’s Northern Neck in an Era of Transformations, 1760-1810, at the annual Lees and Independence event held in June.

Guest HousesThe Cheek Guest House underwent a major renovation in the off season. This included installing individual room heating and cooling units, as well as installing new carpet, updating the bathrooms, painting and refurnishing. Both the Cheek Guest House, with 15 rooms, and the Astor Guest House, which has six rooms, have now received a major facelift. The guest houses continue to provide lodging for many group retreats, Stratford’s educational events, family reunions, and weddings during the year.

Meeting FacilitiesStratford Hall’s meeting facilities, including the Council House, Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library, and the Preservation Gallery in the Visitor Center, hosted numerous meetings, retreats, dinners and receptions during the year. These events included the annual meeting of the Society of the Lees of Virginia and the Payne Family Reunion.

Plantation Dining Room The Plantation Dining room served lunch for visitors while also providing meals for Stratford Hall events, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, Robert E. Lee’s birthday, and Mother’s Day. In addition, the Dining Room provided catering services to many of the meetings, receptions, and dinners being held at Stratford Hall throughout the year.

MillStratford’s water-powered gristmill continues to produce quality products for sale in the Plantation Gift Shop including white and yellow corn meal and grits. The Mill also serves as an important educational resource for school groups, special tours and for the general public as Stratford Hall continues the milling tradition begun by Thomas Lee in the 1740s.
