How do you solve a problem like measuring sports impacts? Or teach the next generation of engineers with real world examples?

In this issue of AXIOM, we’ll let our customers do the talking. We have brought together a sample of their real-life engineering challenges, and how they worked to overcome them – including the team from Sensuss whose award-winning technology helps coaches, parents and athletes detect the level of G-forces sustained in helmeted sports.

Baltimore-based Autani Corp. began its relationship with Avnet Electronics Marketing during work on its intelligent energy efficiency system, which is based on a set of wireless ZigBee® mesh nodes and a management station. In development, they faced a few technical challenges that needed to be overcome.

Morgan State University engineering professors Willie L. Thompson II and Kofi Nyarko talk about their time spent in a SpeedWay Design Workshop™ training session on the ZedBoard™, and how that’s has helped give their students an advantage in the engineering world.

Monitoring Impact Levels in SportsFind out how Sensuss™, Avnet Electronics Marketing, Analog Devices, NXP and Eurotech are helping coaches, parents and athletes detect the level of G-forces sustained in helmeted sports.

The ProblemConcussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), is a very serious topic in the world of sports today. According to the Center for Disease Control, nearly 4 million MTBIs are reported each year due to impacts in sports and recreational activities. In 2013, the NFL, NBA, and NHL have all led the news cycle with concussion-related issues. In the last three years, dozens of youth concussion clinics have opened in nearly 35 states in response to parents’ concerns about their young athletes.

Despite all this focus, there is still a lot to discover about MTBI’s. “It is inexact, a science in its infancy,” Dr. Michael O’Brien of the sports concussion clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital told the New York Times in May 2013. “We know much more than we once did, but there are lots of layers we still need to figure out.”

In the past, one of the largest challenges to fully understand MTBI’s has been the ability to collect data about the severity and frequency of sustained impacts. How can neurologists, coaches or parents know when an impact is going to be a critical event if they don’t know how severe it is or how often other impacts have been sustained?

The SolutionIn order to help solve this challenge, Avnet Electronics Marketing customer Sensuss creates products that use a combination of advanced sensors, machine-to-machine (M2M) technology and cloud based computing to collect data to answer exactly this question. With Avnet’s guidance on supplier identification, inventory management for global production and field application engineer (FAE) support, Sensuss has brought two successful products to market.

The Sensuss S2 is a small, translucent helmet-based device with LEDs that light up when an athlete experiences a pre-defined level of impact; immediately sending an alert that a critical event may have occurred.

The Sensuss S3 uses cloud-based computing with machine-to-machine (M2M) technology to collect both the degree and the history of impacts that an individual user might experience. If a user wearing the S3 helmet- or glove-based sensor experiences an impact, the S3 will measure this impact and then use M2M technology to transmit it through the cloud to a database. Given the level of impact, the database will be programmed to email, text or send a phone alert to a coach, doctor, parent or other specified caregiver.

After thorough review of components available, Sensuss selected several key products from Avnet’s leading line card manufacturers. The helmet devices combine sensor technology from Analog Devices, NXP microcontrollers and the Eurotech Helios gateway and Everyware Cloud M2M technology. The Analog Devices accelerometers and surrounding precision circuitry with the NXP portfolio of processing and ZigBee® solutions provided perfect building blocks for the Sensuss design requirements.  

When coupled with the Eurotech gateways utilizing state-of-the-art Intel hardware; software from Eurotech, Hitachi and Oracle; and

the cellular services from Verizon Wireless, Senuss has the perfect overall solution from the sensors to the Everyware Cloud. The S3 supports 802.11 WiFi, cellular or ZigBee standards.

The S3 device offers a wealth of options for interacting with mobile products, personal computers and servers using the best wireless solutions and software available in the marketplace and a one stop shop through Avnet.

Sensuss uses global manufacturing and distribution with the S2 and S3. They use Avnet for cost-effective inventory control and leading-edge supply-chain management.  Avnet’s ability to help Sensuss create supplier relationships and get materials on-demand anywhere in the world was a significant factor in getting the Sensuss products to market.

A Conversation with Morgan State University Engineering Professors on Avnet Electronics Marketing’s SpeedWay Design Workshops™

The ZedBoard is a very new product. How did you find out about it?

I was introduced to the ZedBoard development kit while supporting a contractual research program at the university. The client wanted us to investigate its capabilities for software-defined radio.

The ZedBoard development platform can be used in a range of applications. Was there a specific application that attracted you to the ZedBoard or was it the application flexibility?

The ZedBoard is an inexpensive development platform for software-defined radio applications due to the Zynq SoC, which allows for a highly integrated solution. The Zynq ARM processing system can implement configuration and control of the SDR, while the programmable logic can be used for the high-performance digital signal processing.

There was an original drive for using ZedBoard - it served as a good platform to implement various algorithms and processes involving open source tools (like Red Hawk) for software defined radio.  I was also attracted to its potential use as a great prototyping platform for computer vision.

As university educators and researchers, your interests may differ from most designers who take the SpeedWay courses. What special needs or potential uses did you see in the course material, or did certain possibilities become apparent as you progressed through the course?

I was looking for some great training material that I could deliver to my research students that could serve as a base on which we could develop additional capabilities and instructional processes. The SpeedWay training I received assisted me tremendously with figuring out how to structure my instruction for my research students in a logical manner, whereby they could progressively build on their experience with prior modules.

The SpeedWay course material has been integrated into our student-mentoring program within the research center. It provides a preliminary introduction to the Zynq capabilities and the Xilinx development environment. It allows us to focus on the SDR concepts with the students, without the initial burden of focusing on the mechanics of the Zynq configuration using Planhead. In addition, it provides an initial framework for an SDR application.

ZedBoard™ Development Kit

The SpeedWay course doesn’t jump straight into SDR. What can you tell us about the first two modules Introduction to Zynq™ and Implementing Linux on the Zynq-7000 SoC and the background they provided for eventually designing with the SDR kit?

The Introduction to Zynq is an essential module, because it provides a sequential approach for configuring the Zynq SoC. The Linux on the Zynq-7000 SoC module provides an out-of-the-box example for implementing Linux onto the ARM processing system. Both modules provide a foundation for understanding the hardware and software framework for the SDR module, which is critical to their understanding and to assisting them with furthering the design process of SDR applications.

The first two courses are an excellent introduction to understanding the tool chain required for configuring and developing on the ZedBoard. The SpeedWay materials are perfect for students who have a limited background in embedded systems programming and gets them up to speed very quickly. By following the courses in sequence, most of the research students have had little trouble getting up to speed on the SDR course.

The SpeedWay course includes lab material for practical exercises using the SDR hardware. Did you find these useful?

Yes, these materials were very helpful. For the university classroom, we augmented some of these materials with exercises that tested students understanding of the concepts presented in the courses. We discovered that some students simply followed the steps, without a true understanding of why they were executing those steps. These exercises helped ensure they could apply reason and logic outside of the steps provided.

We are using the lab material as a framework for Zynq SoC within our research center. Coupled with the Xilinx technical user guides, we have been able to demonstrate real-world applications.

What about the value of the lecture portion of the course? Do you think it is suitable and potentially valuable to an engineering student or new graduate?

I think the SDR lecture is a balanced blend of theory and applied application. Matlab® integration infused into the SDR exercises gives practical insights and is applicable to real-world design flows used within the industry.

Yes, the lecture portion is indeed very valuable to an engineering student. Perhaps references for additional material would be useful for students who would like a broader understanding of the subject area.

Along with colleague Teddi Maust, Account Manager with Avnet, Penna works side by side with Avnet technical experts to bring Autani a selection of parts able to deliver an optimal combination of functionality, performance, price and availability.

“We bring in all of our resources including field application engineers (FAEs) and factory support specialists,” said Penna. “Together, we work through the design to provide Autani with a choice of the best possible components for its designs.”

FAEs from Avnet’s IP&E (Interconnect, Passive & Electromechanical) Group were key in helping Autani extend its product offerings with IP&E technologies that were initially new to the company. In fact, Avnet’s IP&E Group was new to Autani, but the collaboration between Autani engineers and Avnet IP&E FAEs quickly delivered results.

“I was unaware that Avnet had these capabilities until Teddi Maust introduced the IP&E Group. At the end, all of the internal wiring that went into our ‘e>panel 8-zone controller’ as well as the external cable harnesses that connect all of the lighting fixtures to the e>panel throughout the rooms were made by Avnet’s IP&E Group,” said Dunn. “Pricing was good, lead-time was good and the quality was good. “As the design progresses, Autani’s engineers might find they need to change parts to meet some specific timing requirement, for example,” said Penna. “In those cases, we go back and find the right parts needed to make the board work.”

Team MemberAs a design nears production, the Avnet team works closely with Autani and its manufacturing partners — monitoring parts lists to catch any anomalies and to ensure the best price and lead times. Penna, Maust and the Avnet team put the inventory in place for manufacturing, collaborating with local Avnet representatives in the manufacturer’s location to ensure a smooth transition to production. If lead times threaten to extend beyond the target manufacturing window, the Avnet team engages its suppliers to ensure timely delivery.

“Sometimes required lead times can shorten due to various factors,” said Penna. “In those cases, we can draw on our relationship with vendors to work together with the customer to find a solution.”

Throughout the product cycle, the multiple members of the extended Avnet support team continue to work together to address unexpected challenges. “We work as a team to take care of Autani regardless of what component or vendor is involved,” said Penna.

“If Autani runs into a problem with a particular component, they know that if they talk to any member of the team from any Avnet group, we’re going to take care of them.”

For Autani, the effect is close and immediate. “I look at Avnet people as an extension of our departments,” said Dunn. “If we need something and it’s late, that Avnet person doesn’t leave until we get it, and that’s huge.”

At a strategic level, Avnet helped Autani settle its concerns when another manufacturer acquired the supplier of a key component in Autani designs. Avnet drew on its relationship with the acquiring company, bringing in the manufacturer’s representatives to address Autani’s concerns and helping to ensure continued inventory and supplier support for the company.

“Avnet used its direct line of communication with the supplier to help smooth over this very turbulent event for us,” said Dunn. “It was of huge value to us.”

When disruptions do occur, a partner’s response can make all the difference to success in a competitive market. For Autani, the failure of a shipment of hard drives spelled trouble. The Avnet team members took resolution of the problem on themselves — standing in for Autani to put a hold on further shipments, ensuring a smooth identification of the problem and finding replacements of the critical hard drives. “That’s an example of where we depend on Avnet,” said Dunn. “They help us resolve issues that we may struggle with in dealing with some of the manufacturers or with some online source where it’s hard to get hold of somebody.”

PROBLEM • Driven by miniaturization of electrical components and higher switching frequencies of many electrical devices, hybrid capacitors have started to get more traction. Known for their stable electrical characteristics at high frequencies, hybrid capacitors also have other compelling advantages that make a difference in applications such as computer servers, backup devices and networking gear as well as industrial motors, automotive engine control units, security cameras and LED lighting.

SOLUTION So, what are the key advantages to selecting a hybrid capacitor?

• Hybrids are compact. Given the ongoing push to miniaturize electrical equipment, the size of capacitors has taken on growing importance. Surface mount hybrid capacitors measuring just 6.3 x 5.8 mm can handle 35 V and offer a capacitance of 47 μF. The small size can save a significant amount of board space. In a recent 48 V power supply application, hybrid capacitors occupied just 13% of the board space required by aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

• Hybrids maximize reliability. Capacitors cannot just be small, they also need to hold up under challenging electrical and environmental conditions. By nearly every measure, hybrid capacitors outperform equivalent aluminum electrolytic and polymer capacitors hands down. For example, hybrid capacitors have significantly better endurance and humidity resistance than either their electrolytic or polymer counterparts. Hybrids also have significantly higher tolerance for large ripple currents, inrush currents and elevated temperature. (See Figure below.)

• Cost savings. Taken together, the size and reliability produce a strong cost benefit for using hybrid capacitors—in spite of their higher upfront prices. The higher ripple current specification alone can result in a 20% reduction in cost by increasing the life cycle of the capacitor. In the 48 V power supply application just mentioned, the hybrid capacitors had a total cost 50% lower than the equivalent aluminum electrolytic capacitors, with the savings coming from reductions in board cost, warranty cost and ability to withstand high ripple current.

Hybrid capacitors exhibit high reliability when subjected to high ripple currents. In recent testing, the capacitors had the electrical characteristics at no load and rated ripple current (1300 mA) conditions. At three times the rated ripple current (3600 mA), the capacitors electrical characteristics did change, but no shortage took place.

The NCV896530 evaluation board provides an opportunity to evaluate the device in a convenient form factor with an adjustable output. The board contains four potentiometers, allowing the user to coarsely and finely adjust each output independently. The outputs are capable of providing up to 1 A each and 1.6 A total. The two enable pins allow each switcher to be used independently, while the SYNC pin allow the user to synchronize the oscillator to an external clock up to 2.7 MHz.

PROBLEM • Decreases in system power budgets present challenges to engineers designing equipment with galvanic isolation. Legacy products such as optocouplers and digital isolators may create performance and/or cost trade-offs that are undesirable or in some cases unacceptable.

SOLUTION • The ADuM144x family from Analog Devices offers designers the industry’s lowest power digital isolator.

• Powered by as little as 1 μW of power, these devices deliver power levels over 1,000 times lower than optocouplers and competing digital isolators.

• With an operating voltage range of 2.25 to 3.6 V, these devices further reduce power constraints and provide the lowest isolator operating voltage on the market.

• Quiescent power supply current at 2.5 V is less than 5 μA per channel, and power supply current at 2 Mbps is less than 380 μA per channel. A power saving mode can reduce current levels to as little as 0.1 μA per channel, resulting in a 1 μW of total power for the entire isolator.

Though there is no doubt that the “Amazonification” of fulfillment has changed expectations of customers in all channels, this omnichannel model doesn’t necessarily translate to success in the electronics sector. In fact, I would venture to say that players in today’s high tech supply chain would be better off emulating Burger King’s iconic “Have it Your Way” approach.

Delivery performance is increasingly recognized as a key driver of customer satisfaction. According to the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) 2013 Global Supply Chain report, best-in-class delivery was cited as one of the most critical elements of an optimized supply chain by 94 percent of the technology companies surveyed. But, given the diverse size, geography and product mix of players in today’s supply chain, achieving perfect order fulfillment is more difficult than ever and OEMs that try to emulate Amazon’s one-size-fits-all strategy will more than likely end up over-serving some customers and under-serving others. That’s why market leaders are more frequently deploying a segmentation strategy that tailors the supply chain to meet specific customer requirements. In fact, PWC reports that more than 83 percent of top performers configure their supply chains for different customer segments.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERSSupply chain segmentation is not a new concept, but until recently few companies had managed to successfully break down the traditional monolithic supply chain structure in favor of multiple, smaller and more nimble supply chains. The essence of supply chain segmentation is the aggregation of like customer supply chain requirements into a single service model optimized to meet the performance priorities of these customer clusters. Cost-service tradeoffs most commonly focus on the supply chain attributes of reliability, responsiveness, agility, cost and efficiency.

A basic example would be grouping high-volume, low mix customers in a supply chain built for efficiency, while the supply chain for low volume, high mix customers would focus on maximizing flexibility. OEMs that configure their supply chains based on these tradeoffs can consistently satisfy customer demands without adding cost or risk to the supply chain.

As with any significant process change, the first, and sometimes most challenging step, is to map out current flows. At Avnet, we recommend customers use the Supply Chain Council’s SCOR® methodology to define their current supply chain activity. (Learn more at www.supply-chain.org.) We then help them to analyze this information in conjunction with the results of a Supply Chain Maturity Monitor (SCM2) survey, a self-assessment questionnaire that helps to identify their organization’s current supply chain reliability, responsiveness and agility levels.

To assure that you are starting with the most accurate picture of the supply chain, it is important to include inputs from across the organization’s business disciplines, including marketing, sales, manufacturing, planning and procurement. With all these varying perspectives in play, interdisciplinary wrangling over priorities is inevitable. It can be helpful to bring in an outside party to facilitate the process. Having an objective person involved can help ascertain the gaps between the ultimate goal of the supply chain and its actual performance.

SEPARATION ANXIETYOften, when we broach the subject of supply chain segmentation with customers, there is a concern that a divided supply chain will be more difficult to manage, more costly and less efficient. In reality, the opposite is true. According to analysts from McKinsey & Co., in high tech, segmentation typically improves service levels by 5 to 10 percent while reducing inventory levels by 15 to 20 percent. In my professional experience, I’ve seen even more significant results.

To illustrate the advantages of segmentation, I’d like to share a couple of real world examples. Avnet Velocity was recently engaged with a customer who was struggling with extreme shifts in

customer demand. The first ten weeks of the quarter saw consistent, yet somewhat meager, order activity. Then, in the final two weeks of the quarter, approximately 50 percent of their orders need to be fulfilled, with nearly 40 percent in the last week. To further complicate matters, the final system configuration is not known until the customers place their purchase orders.

Initially, our customer attempted to change their customers’ back end loaded demand path by adjusting the sales compensation plan. When this approach failed, Avnet suggested they segment their supply chain, and adopt an “available to build” inventory model for the customers that are quarter-end driven. Since the customer segmentation on the ‘demand side’ didn’t solve the entire problem, a dual response model was deployed to match the customer segmentation on the demand side to supplier segmentation on the supply side.

Another customer scenario demonstrates how even the process of establishing a segmentation plan can yield substantial efficiencies. When working with a consumer electronics customer to define their supply chain flow, we discovered that their businesses in the Americas and Europe had roughly the same size distribution center infrastructure, but the European business was employing an extensive channel network, whereas the Americas’ consumption was primarily customer direct. With input from their logistics group, we determined that this customer could substantially lower their cost by centralizing like products into their lower cost global distribution center, and still service their channel network, which generally received product in larger, less frequent shipments. This enabled the customer to reduce their footprint in the higher cost European center.

Executing a supply chain segregation initiative isn’t for the faint of heart. Breaking down traditional beliefs and behavior patterns is never easy. But our experience has shown that a successful segmentation strategy can enable a wider range of customers to “have it their way,” while simultaneously improving operational efficiency, profitability and driving greater value – all vital to remaining competitive in today’s global supply chain.

Recently, a Japanese manufacturer of consumer electronics needed to restock a key component for one of their top revenue generating products. To their surprise and alarm, the component supplier informed them that the component was no longer available having been declared end-of-life (EOL) 18 months ago. Protective of their brand, the OEM refused to source from the gray market but with several months’ worth of orders in their pipeline and no time or desire to undergo a major product redesign, the OEM was in a desperate situation. How will they be able to keep millions of dollars of production lines moving?

Fortunately for the Japanese OEM, the component supplier already had a franchised agreement with Components Direct, an Avnet company, specializing in excess, EOL and obsolete components. Because of its direct relationship with the original components manufacturer, Components Direct was able to provide the Japanese OEM with not only available stock with guaranteed product lineage but also the original warranties for the component they were looking for, giving the customer a happy ending to their situation. However, the dilemma faced by the customer is unfortunately not uncommon and as the trend toward obsolescence increases, more and more customers are facing the dilemma of looking for a trusted, authorized source for components when the product becomes obsolete.

THE PROBLEM WITH OBSOLESCENCEWhen he made the quote noted to the right, Stevens, a pioneering mid-century American industrial designer, was referring to products like cars and appliances, but his sentiment applies equally to today’s electronic components industry. The marketplace is continually being geared towards new product designs with ever-shortening product lifecycles which are driving new supplier strategies and impacting buyer behavior. Obsolete and EOL components, historically the “forgotten stepchild” of the supply chain are increasingly becoming a critical part of the product lifecycle management process. As components manufacturers move on to newer, more profitable production, authentic obsolete parts become harder to find. This results in component shortages, compounded by the entrance of counterfeits and other gray market product into the supply chain. According to IHS Research, it’s typical that 10 percent or more of components on parts lists are obsolete. In turn, a total of 57 percent of counterfeit-part reports from 2001 through 2012 involved obsolete or EOL components. Component buyers are concerned about their ability to reliably source authentic obsolete and EOL components as they increasingly recognize the risk and potential negative repercussions to their businesses that can result from buying from the gray market. This dilemma leaves many buyers asking the question: how do I have confidence that my supply chain is reliable and secure?

The gray market is prevalent across all product categories and as Figure 2 illustrates, can range from the newest date code to product decades old, demonstrating that whether you were an OEM looking for the newest product or a military sub-contractor looking for obsolete components, no end customer is immune to the presence of unauthorized product. The ability to trace product flow is limited as the supply chain offers numerous potential entry points and, therefore, multiple opportunities for counterfeiters to insert themselves. For example, more and more, companies are moving their production to outsourced manufacturing companies in order to realize cost savings and bottom line efficiencies. Some brokers maintain direct ownership in these outsourced manufacturers, through which they gain access to legitimate inventory. Often the procured inventory is rerouted internally once received causing direct-manufacturer traceability to be lost and these components then more easily enter the gray market. Not only is a portion of the legitimate product potentially being diverted from intended channels, but also, there is risk of counterfeit components entering into the gray market. Although not every unauthorized product is counterfeit, the risk of just one counterfeit component entering the supply chain could result in significant risk and long term negative repercussions including:

LEGAL the risk of inauthentic parts entering the supply chain is increasingly leading to the possibility of criminal prosecution and financial penalties, even in the case where an OEM unknowingly incorporates counterfeit components into a project. With recent changes implemented by the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and subsequent amendments, penalties of up to life in prison for an individual and fines, ranging up to $2,000,000 for individuals and $5,000,000 for companies are being levied against OEMs and point towards a future of increased accountability across other industries and regions.

FINANCIAL gray market parts that work their way into a buyer’s supply chain often result in the opportunity costs of having to halt production, recall product and develop new sources. When products are diverted from intended geographies or sold to the unintended end customer—allowing the end customer to receive a higher-than-normal discount—a brand owner’s revenue and profitability may be directly impacted. Additionally, a company’s revenue and profitability may be impacted when gray market products require after-sales product support or warranty because applicable support fees have typically not been paid.

BRAND REPUTATION when end users see differing price points for the same brand in the market, it causes confusion and may negatively affect a brand value. If a gray market product is not supported by companies or a counterfeit component makes its way into an OEM’s product, the end users may be financially and operationally impacted, thus lowering end-user satisfaction with the brand and potentially tarnishing a company’s reputation. With the growing focus on counterfeits and inauthentic parts, it is even more important than ever that buyers are aware of the threat and the repercussions that can occur.

THE LIFECYCLE GAPThe mismatch between the OCMs and the OEMs product lifecycles sometimes creates gaps which result in excess supply or unmet demand. While potential excess supply is a key concern for suppliers, the gap from unmet demand for difficult-to-source components is most challenging for customers because it can cause a disruption in their manufacturing flow and planning, and result in significant financial impact. This is particularly true for customers with long product lifecycles, such as the military or medical industry (see Figure 1).

IN THE MILITARY AND AEROSPACE INDUSTRY, projects are increasingly designed with a lifecycle philosophy that emphasizes sustainability and an improved maintenance program, with long-term (up to 15 years or more) access to electronics components as part of this philosophy. Defense and aerospace buyers often need much older date code, obsolete or EOL products and, as a result, are seeking a supplier that offers access to these products, as well as the ability to hold parts in a safe and controlled environment for processing in the future.

MEDICAL DEVICES that rely on electronic components often require multi-year development cycles before obtaining government approval. In 2006, the average FDA medical device approval period was 99 days. By 2010, that number had risen to 153 days. Some vendors complain of waits of four years or more to reach the market. Upon entering the market, devices are expected to last from seven to ten years or more. These varying product lifecycles require buyers to demand a range of components, with at times specific date codes, and they can’t always find them.

The ‘lifecycle gap,’ created by a lack of supply from the manufacturer combined with sometimes urgent requirements to support older products, is forcing buyers to look for alternate sources including brokers and/or gray market suppliers who exploit the needs of buyers for obsolete and end-of-life components. This makes it easier for counterfeits, or at least unauthorized components, to enter the supply chain.

CONTINUALLY UPDATE PROCUREMENT PROCESSES and train personnel on new methods and procedures to identify and avoid counterfeit or non-conforming obsolete and EOL components. To be effective, procurement processes must be continually updated to reflect new market realties – product recalls, changes in regulation and shortages due to unforeseen supply chain interruptions, such as the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami and, more recently, the Hynix explosion in China. Although these were one-time emergency occurrences, components are transitioning into obsolete and EOL status on a more frequent basis than in the past, and buyers must be prepared. There are steps buyers may take to update their procurement processes:

» Education – Most counterfeit parts are not easily distinguishable from authentic components. Still, design engineers and purchasing professionals should familiarize themselves with the most commonly-used methods for counterfeiting electronics components, such as empty shells and blacktopping. If the counterfeit part is not detected and makes its way into the supply chain, reporting becomes essential to help authorities identify and prosecute counterfeiters, and also to preserve the buyer’s brand integrity.

» Control plan – OEMs should document and communicate a detailed plan for how the company will prevent inauthentic obsolete and EOL parts from entering its supply chain, and outline what steps it will take if this occurs. The plan may include purchasing guidelines, inspection protocols and reporting. As revisions to the NDAA are continually added (see Figure 3), keeping informed of the new regulations and updating this plan to reflect new realities will be vital to demonstrating compliance with requirements and ensuring a more secure supply chain.

For buyers wanting to avoid the gray market, there are three key steps to ensuring that only authentic obsolete and EOL components enter their supply chain.
