Global Cargo Insurance (Source: IUMI)
100% = 16,95 USD Billion
Loss Ratio of 70% = 11,87 USD Billion

Nikolai Raab – Nautischer Verein – Jan. 2016
Conclusion
Claimed cargo value 565Mio € in Germany & 11,87 USD Billion globally
Replacing the cargo value is not replacing the cargo!
Shippers “total financial damage” = claim amount x 2 (depends, but can
be up to 5)

Conclusion
Increase of risk due to:
Increase of capacities on sea / land transports
Increase of single and accumulated values during transport and storage

Overall Conclusion:
Insurers and Shippers (as well as carriers and forwarders) need to know &
control technical risks in order to control financial risks
This leads to the necessity to
Develop, establish and maintain general technical rules and individual
standards for preplanning
- Packaging
- Cargo Handling
- Stowage & Securing
 Initiate supervision & survey
- Ensure “CCC” – Capacity, Condition & Correct use of agreed equipment because of ,
Develop methods for global real time monitoring & control of cargo
movements and risk exposure

Lifting points (marking, traverse / angle limits, use for securing?
 Securing points (capacity, angle-limits, marking)
 Footprint (load distribution)
 Constructional strength (stoppers, shoring, loop-lashings)
Corrosion protection (max. duration of transport, interim storage?)
Protection of sensitive components (switchboards, valves, etc.)
Shock / tipping / humidity indicators or recorders
 Understandable & visible marking (COG!)
Means & Methods – Focus on Preplanning
Nikolai Raab – Nautischer Verein – Jan. 201632 |
Storage:
 Max. estimated duration
Packaging suitable / sufficient protected storage position
supporting design, max. ground load & load distribution
 Access for various handling means
Access for specific transportation sequence (minimize handling!)
