As a Colonial trading port, Alexandria was a place where people came to buy, sell and trade their goods. Corn, wheat and tobacco were the hot commodities at first, but soon tradesmen, artisans and merchants brought their own crafts, furniture and goods to Market Square to sell and trade with other visitors and residents. Today, you probably won’t be able to barter many trades, but buying and selling is still one of Alexandria’s favorite pastimes. And instead of corn and tobacco, today’s merchants sell everything from fine art to antiques, designer clothes to home décor, and everything in between. A rich combination of history and modernity, Alexandria is the perfect escape for shopaholics.
Along Alexandria’s main thoroughfare, King Street, and throughout the surrounding blocks, you’ll find an exciting mix of eclectic shops, high-end boutiques, big-name stores, quaint markets, furniture stores, art studios, pet boutiques and more. Alexandria shopping truly caters to every taste, budget and style.
No matter what you’re in the mood for, the charming streets of Alexandria have all the makings of a top-notch shopping destination. An added
plus—nearly every business in Alexandria is dog friendly, so you don’t have to leave your best friend at home when you’re running around town.
Old Town, mainly centered on King Street, has a multitude of stores in all varieties—you can find an Ethiopian craft shop, an aviation specialty store, a shop for gourmet cheese and doggie boutique all on one square block. The scenic sidewalks and convenient central location of all the stores make it a great place to stroll for an afternoon or entire day.
If antiques are your passion, you’ll find a huge selection of one-of-a-kind pieces, from 18th-century armoires to Provence pottery, vintage clothing to period decorative accessories. Many people come from miles away to visit Old Town and its high concentration of antiques shops. Fine art and home décor are also common finds along King Street’s bustling sidewalks.

Boutique owner Joelle Solimano, moved to Alexandria 15 years ago and has been operating her boutique for over 14 years. Travelling throughout Europe for her clothes, she looks for timeless pieces that are made with the best fabric. Joelle is passionate about her work stating, “Clothing should be of the highest quality and be worn for multiple seasons. My choices are museum pieces that are classic, eclectic, but most of all, they are fun.” When selecting for her store she searches out European Designers or American Designers with European roots, stocking her store with Black Halo, Nicole Miller Collection, Tibi, Claude Brown, Diesel, Yoana Baraschi and other European designers.
The scenic sidewalks and convenient central location of all the stores make Old Town a great place to stroll for an afternoon or entire day. But you may spend the whole day at An American in Paris. Pets are always welcome.

With a name like Today’s Cargo, you never know on any given day what pieces you might find at the King Street jewelry shop. But with its collection of unique jewelry, you’re sure to find something that suits your style. As you walk through the door, allow your eyes to wander through the collections of sparkling diamonds and gemstones, precious pearls and shimmering silver.
Gladys Irvin, founder of Today’s Cargo, started selling jewelry on a card table at a local flea market in Old Town, Alexandria. More than 37 years later, this quirky shop is a local favorite with its friendly staff, family atmosphere and jewelry of all shapes, sizes, and price ranges.
Over the years, her business outgrew the flea market and several smaller stores—and it’s easy to see why. Donna McIntyre, store manager, and her staff, source their pieces from jewelry trade shows and from jewelers that the business has maintained relationships with throughout the years. Looking particularly for exceptional pieces from all over the world, customers can often find pearls from China and Japan, gold from Italy, sterling silver pieces from Bali and Thailand, and amber from the Baltic Sea. They also carry a wide vari-ety of fun, and reasonably priced fashion jewelry among many other things.
A combination of high quality jewelry at valuable prices and friendly service has added to this shop’s success. The pieces available vary from traditional to modern, perfect for those looking to accessorize an outfit or just make a statement. Stop in frequently to browse the seasonal gift items or glance through the collection of estate jewelry to see if something catches your eye.
In addition to jewelry repair, Today’s Cargo offers pearl restringing, appraisals and ear piercing. For those shop-ping for something special, consult with Today’s Cargo for custom designs, special orders and engraving.
Stop by the store, open daily, for a charming gift or pick up something chic for yourself. No matter what you’re looking for, whether it be a diamond ring, strand of pearls, or as sparkly as a rhinestone pin, one thing is for certain—you will be treated like family.

Diamonds may last forever; but not everything is made to last that long, especially antique jewelry or an heirloom silver piece that has been passed down from generation to generation. But in the hands of Lawrence Miller—silversmith, gemologist and jew-elry designer—treasured pieces sparkle and shine.
His store, Lawrence Miller & Co is located in Alexandria and showcases 70 years of combined experience in jewelry design and silversmithing. Lawrence’s pieces represent his effort, artistic eye and a lifelong passion. Lawrence’s story began when he met silversmith Dezso Rubesch. Dezso was taught by his father, Anthon Rubesch, a master silversmith from Hungary, at their Alexandria store. Lawrence began to study with them, truly realizing his passion. Lawrence eventually bought the business from the Rubesch family, and while he’s put his own touch on the store, he continues the unparalleled craftsman-ship of the Rubesch legacy.
Lawrence, a GIA graduate gemologist, special-izes in working with precious metals, appraising gems and jewelry design. His silversmithing, restoration expertise and overall artistic abilities have been recognized and requested by members of the United States Department of State, the British Royal family and U.S. Senators. Lawrence Miller & Co also boasts a qualified staff of one additional GIA graduate gemologist and Ricardo Covarrubias, a second-generation master gold-smith originally from Bolivia.
Lawrence Miller & Co offers a variety of special-ties including: custom jewelry design, original pre-sentation pieces, custom designed sterling silver, buff-ing and polishing, custom engraving, dent removal, silver and gold plating, and appraisals. Lawrence Miller & Co. is open Tuesday through Saturday and on Sunday and Monday by appointment.

Beautiful Things Start with Beads and String
Ten Thousand Villages, located at 915 King Street, is a global bazaar in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. You can find baskets from Africa, hand block printed textiles from India, jewelry and scarves from Peru, pottery from Vietnam and so much more.
Ten Thousand Villages is also a fair trade retailer, one of the few in the Washington, DC, area. “Fair trade means, essentially, that the artist who made your wall hanging or bowl or necklace, got a fair price for his or her labor, taking into account the cost of materials, the time it took and the living wage stan-dard for that country,” explained manager Kate McMahon. “Basically, when you buy fair trade, you’re buying hope, change and a better world.”
“We tell our customers that every item in our store has a person’s life story behind it.”
For instance, McMahon points to a handmade silk rose pin. “These were made in Vietnam, by the chil-dren of victims of Agent Orange, a defoliant the US Army used during the war to clear the jungle of hiding places for the Vietcong. It also caused birth defects, such as stunted limbs and brain defects, in hundreds of thousands of people. So now, these children and grandchildren of Agent Orange are making something beautiful - a beautiful flower, of all things, and sending them back to the United States.”
In addition to home décor and accessories, Ten Thousand Villages also sells fairly traded food. You can buy organic coffee and chocolate, as well as soup, bread and cookie mixes from the Women’s Bean Project, its only US-based producer. And to complement any meal, you can discover teapots and mugs, salad bowls and platters, elegant sushi sets and chopsticks, and of course, table linens to complement.
If that weren’t enough, you can also find books that will, as McMahon says, “open your mind and warm your heart,” such as 14 Cows for America, the true story of a post-9/11 gift from Masai tribesmen in
Kenya. If music is more your thing, you’ll find interest-ing instruments for young and old, many that you’ve probably never seen before, like mbiras (thumb pianos), singing bowls, drums and rain sticks that capture the spirit of falling water. The recorded music available includes the latest CDs from Putumayo World Music and Cumbancha.
They even have a space just for kids so young minds can explore books, puzzles, toys and more. McMahon says the galimoto (a wire and cloth push toy from Kenya) is especially popular. Older kids (and their par-ents) will marvel at the beautiful and intricate kites from Bali in the shapes of birds, dragons and even boats. And yes, they really do fly!
Prices range from a few dollars for beaded rings and inspirational river rocks to a few hundred dollars for a one-of-a-kind coffee table made of reclaimed wood. Most items range between $10 and $50, which means you can buy the perfect gift and still have enough left over for a little something for yourself!

A Unique Ethiopian Experience in Old Town
With her family in the furniture business and a love for art at a young age, there is no question why Saba Alene’s life-long dream was to open an art gallery. In 1991, she opened the doors to St. George Interior Decoration and Art Gallery, the first art gallery in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa. Her success has led her to recently open a second gallery, St. George Gallery, on North Alfred Street in the heart of Old Town, Alexandria. “Old town Alexandria is a beautiful and historic area and has just the right ambience for St. George Gallery,” says Alene.
Since the opening of her gallery in Addis Ababa, it has been recognized and praised for displaying art from some of Ethiopia’s most prominent artists. The gallery also features Alene’s own furniture designs, a talent she learned as a child when she worked in her family’s furniture business. She learned hands-on techniques of furniture design and construction, as well as a passion to continue designing her own pieces.
Tucked on one of the quaint, tree-lined streets of Alexandria, her second gallery, which opened in February, is truly a unique Ethiopian experience in Old Town. “St. George Gallery in Addis Ababa has played a big role in promoting art and an appreciation of Ethiopian crafts in Ethiopia. I felt that now was the right time to show the hidden beauty of Ethiopian art to the rest of the world,” says Alene about the opening of her Alexandria gallery. Similar to the original gallery in Addis Ababa, St. George Gallery includes an assortment of Ethiopian works of art.
The handcrafted furniture, some of which are Alene’s own designs, represents her attention to detail and dedication to the quality of construction. When asked where her inspiration comes from, Alene easily responds, “My inspiration is Ethiopian culture, history and heritage but I have gotten specific ideas from visiting historic sites like Axum and Lalebela, old churches in many areas and looking at old manuscripts in churches, museums or photos in books.”
The gallery also houses paintings, including traditional Ethiopian works on parchment and wood, antiques, such as the stunning “Jimma Chairs,” and textiles. Ethiopian jewelry, including silver necklaces, bracelets and anklets, can easily catch the eye of a perusing customer. The silver necklaces, in both traditional and modern styles, are designed specifically for the gallery. Other items that are featured include ceramics and pottery, antique Ethiopian silver neck crosses and hand crosses, and a selection of Ethiopian books.
A percentage of the profits from St. George Gallery support SOLIANA, a local Ethiopian charity that is very close to Alene’s heart. Organized by women, SOLIANA helps women and children in a rural community about four hours from Addis Ababa by supplying clean water, improving educational facilities and planting trees.
While Alene pulls inspiration from many different places for her designs, it is extremely important that her work captures the rich heritage of Ethiopia. Alene was awarded the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Special Gold Medal Award, which was presented by the Ethiopian President in 2005, for her contribution to the preservation and promotion of Ethiopian culture and heritage.
With a supportive family and a dedicated staff, Alene is looking forward to the gallery’s continuing success, “I hope that with the new gallery in Alexandria, I can give different artists a chance to be seen outside of Ethiopia. A gallery in the U.S. has been my dream for many years and I am determined to promote the Ethiopian artists, my furniture and JB Jewelries.” Alene’s strength and vision allowed her to promote the artists, art and culture of Ethiopia in her hometown. Now she brings those same values and beliefs to St. George Gallery in Alexandria to share Ethiopian culture and art with the world.

DiningIN ALEXANDRIA
From chef-owned eateries to historical cafes, dining in Alexandria is truly a culinary adventure. Dine and dance the night away while experiencing some of Alexandria’s restaurants and its bustling nightlife scene or spend a leisurely afternoon at one of its many brunch spots. There are dozens of restaurants in the area and beyond that provide all the elements of an excellent dining experience.
While most local restaurants have a focus on quality atmosphere, good service and local flavors, one thing that makes this area so unique is its melting pot of culinary viewpoints. Renowned chefs have been attracted to the region for years, delivering creative dishes suitable for any palate. Alexandria combines its historical setting with contemporary flair to provide diners with menus that will tempt their taste buds.
From the West End to Old Town, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants,
from family-owned eateries that have withstood the test of time to new and innovative establishments with unique menus. The variety ensures residents and visitors have plenty of choices and will be able to find just what they’re looking for.
Make your way to the area of town known as Del Ray to experience an eclectic mix of local stores and restaurants. This charming part of town is complete with a Main Street and will easily become one of your favorite spots to dine. A visit to Old Town, which has been alive with activity since it was founded in 1749, will present all types of gourmet food, appropriate for any appetite.
Because of its proximity to the coast, seafood, such as famous Chesapeake blue crabs and fresh seafood from the Atlantic Ocean, plays a large part in Alexandria’s cuisine scene.
Blue Crab, the pride of neighboring Maryland and a tasty menu item sought out by tourists and locals alike, is mainly available from April through December. The season for the soft shell variety ends a few months earlier, in October. During the summer months, you’ll find crab on many menus throughout the area, in an infinite array of presentations.
The fresh catch of the day is also served in an endless amount of ways—steamed, fried, blackened, or whatever else the chef can imagine. Area chefs use their creative licenses to create delicious dishes combining seafood and fresh ingredients, such as meats and produce, from local farms.
Striped bass, or rockfish, is a popular fresh catch, particularly from the Chesapeake Bay. Striped bass is a deliciously moist fish that area restaurants can cook up in a multitude of ways. The mild flavor is usually complemented by spices, herbs or sauces and grilled, blackened or broiled. The best season to find this popular fish on the menu is during the fall and winter months, when they migrate south from New England.
During the summer, you’ll find many other fish on the specials board, and local menus feature seafood favorites like shrimp, scallops, oysters, clams, lobster and salmon. Always check the specials for the freshest catch and innovative creations from the chef.
Alexandria is a mix of cosmopolitan eateries, fusion cuisine, international restaurants and mom and pop shops with changing menus using the best of local flavors. You will find everything from regional dishes, such as country ham and grits, to seafood or something you’ve never tried before. And of course, there are plenty of elegant dining and five-star restaurants in Alexandria and the surrounding areas for your special occasions.
So whatever you’re in the mood for, bring your appetite to one of Alexandria’s restaurants and you’re sure to find something that will satisfy.

It is Alexandria’s first chilly weekend in October and I can nearly see by breath as my significant other, Brian, and I make our way to the docks for an evening dinner cruise on Nina’s Dandy. On the way, our cab
driver had broken the news to us that we would be missing Deal or No Deal that night on television.
“What a dilemma,” Brian had said jokingly. Then I asked the cabbie if he had ever been on Nina’s Dandy before.
“Nope,” he said. “But seriously, you two are missing out on great TV tonight.”
While Nina’s Dandy gets a plethora of great reviews, I still didn’t know exactly what to expect. As a teenager, I had worked as a waitress on din-ner cruises in Minnesota, and what I remember most about them were the bulks of pre-made buffet meals, the shoddy, yet popular bar, and the polka band. Yes, polka. But even as we approach the boat, I can tell that my teenage memories of dinner cruises were being exceeded considerably. It seems this is a whole new breed.
Brian and I walk up the ramp to the boat and get our picture taken in front of the official Nina’s Dandy life preserver—we are told that the photo-graph can be purchased at the end of the evening as we disembark. Kind staff members welcome us aboard and I am thrilled to escape the cold air. A card with my name on it sits on a table at the entrance, and we show it to the host who swiftly brings us to our table.
“This is nice,” Brian turns and says with a grin as we follow the host to the table. I note my agree-ment with a smile and a nod. Yes, it is very nice.
The host sits us with smile at a table set for two next to the window and the piano. Gourmet crackers and a perfect scoop of port-wine seasoned soft sharp cheddar cheese are there waiting for us, which we enthusiastically enjoy while folks con-tinue boarding. A gentleman plays the piano gently as the sun makes its final appearance of the night.
We each order a glass of wine from the exten-sive wine list and I begin to notice the details of the beautiful dining room. Judging from the lavish furnishings, you might never know you were on a boat at all, but the huge windows lining the side give it away—they offer an incredibly clear view of the water outside.
Several tables lit with candles are set up on the sides of the room, with a tile dance floor in the middle. At one end of the dance floor is an ornate mahogany bar that looks straight out of a five star hotel, and at the other end a grand piano.
“I wonder how they got that piano in here,” Brian says, eyeing the piano player as he sways back and forth. I try to imagine a piano being loaded into this lovely boat, but stop myself. What does it matter? It is luxurious to be enjoying the sounds of a grand piano while in a beautiful din-ing room, aboard a beautiful boat.
“I don’t want to think about it,” I tell him. “But I am really enjoying it!”
We toast to the piano and are delighted to see the second course on its way to our table—a plate of assorted fresh fruits. Soon after, I notice the dark landscape and lights slowly passing by outside. The ride is so smooth that I hadn’t even noticed when we’d left the dock.
The river is wide as we head north on the Potomac, but you can see plenty of sparkling lights on the shore. Looking south, we notice a line of airplanes coming in to the Ronald Reagan International Airport just to the north—they are lining up one behind the other as far as we can see.
Soon after we finish our fruit, another course comes our way—our waiter delivers an attractive salad of fresh spinach leaves, mushrooms, walnuts and mandarin oranges with a special house dress-ing of herbs, wine vinegar, oil and honey.
After three courses, I was just trying to mental-ly prepare myself for the main entrée when it was placed right before me a large cut of Prime Rib, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented.
At the time I made my reservation, I found it difficult to choose between the many delectable offerings as an entrée: Fillet of Haddock, Poached Salmon, Cornish Game Hen, Pasta Primavera, and Stuffed Shrimp with Crab were all on the menu. Ultimately, I went with the steak and chose the Stuffed Shrimp with Crab for Brian-the staff member who made my reservation highly recommended it.
Brian’s eyes lit up as the waiter delivered his plate, which featured a beautiful configuration of jumbo shrimp stuffed with breaded crab, served
on a bed of fluffy rice and topped with hollandaise sauce. We both silently ate our meals, and before I even got to ask about the shrimp, Brian’s plate was nearly empty.
Unfortunately, my stomach can’t take an entire plate of food (though my taste buds very much want to), so I set my fork down in submission with a sigh. I must make room for dessert, I think to myself.
At that point, we start to notice some extraor-dinary sites outside. As we head under the low bridges and the river narrows, we see the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial lit up with the capital building in the background. We cross under another bridge and see the Kennedy Center and some impressive dockside buildings in Georgetown.
Though it is a chilly night, we make our way to the top deck to enjoy the truly extraordinary view of the monuments and the city. We both have seen every one of the monuments, but not like this. It is a unique and grand way to enjoy the sites of Washington D.C.
As the night progresses, we enjoy a fabulous dessert, we dance, we drink wine and coffee, and we enjoy the splendor of one of the classiest din-ner cruises around. No contest—I think it was the cabbie who missed out tonight.

Owner, CHeF PrOFile Global Cuisine in a Local SceneOn a quaint street in Alexandria, slightly off the beaten
path, another world awaits you—a world of eating, drinking and merriment. In a whimsical way that would satisfy even Tolkien’s hobbits, Bilbo Baggins Global Wine Café and Restaurant encourages you to eat locally but think globally—and beyond.
Chef Michael Armellino, who has trained in Switzerland and apprenticed at restaurants all over the world, and his wife, Linda, mixed their passion and creativity with the charm of an old building to create a funky and comfortable restaurant and pub for the last 30 years.
restAurAnt OverviewHealthy Food for Healthy SpiritsStart your visit downstairs in the Green Dragon Pub.
With close to 100 different beers and 150 wines from around the world, it’s worth taking your time to peruse the options. The relaxed atmosphere is great for grabbing a drink with coworkers or sharing tapas with friends. Upstairs is comprised of cozy tables, accommodating the casual conversationalists, family get-togethers and romantic couples, all looking for a unique experience and exceptional food.
The extensive menu, which easily has enough options to satisfy the hungriest of hobbits, changes seasonally but always includes the same standard of high quality and, of course, favorites that are requested year after year. The dishes on the menu are inspired in part by local seafood and produce, as well as concepts from Armellino’s travels and international studies.
Attention to detail is important; and despite the array of dishes on the menu, Armellino and his staff take the time to make the restaurant’s cuisine components from scratch—from the tortellini, stuffed with salmon and crab and served in a light apple ginger Chardonnay cream sauce, down to the homemade mayonnaise.
Whether you’re stopping in for drinks and a selection of cheeses or Sunday brunch to try Frodo’s French toast made from homemade cracked wheat and raisin bread, Bilbo Baggins strives to make sure all diners enjoy the experience, delicious food and a variety of beverages. From t-shirts to tuxes, this restaurant welcomes all for upscale dining in a casual atmosphere—even hobbits are welcome.

Even before the Alexandria restaurant scene really took off, RT’s Restaurant was serving up delicious Creole and Cajun dishes so good they attracted people from all over the D.C. metro area to the Del Ray area eatery. Fresh seafood, innovative New Orleans cuisine and exciting daily specials pleased thousands of palates when the restaurant first opened in 1985. Today, the same ingredients and 25 years of experience make RT’s one of Washington D.C.’s most well-known and appreciated restaurants.
RT’s has the look and feel of a neighborhood tavern—green paneled booths and a casual décor keep a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. But the minute the food hits your table, and you can smell the Cajun spices wafting off your plate, you will realize this isn’t your average neighborhood restaurant.
The Restaurant serves up it’s own twist on New Orleans cuisine, using only the freshest seafood available. House favorites include the popular Jack Daniels Shrimp with Lump Crab, a famous specialty since the restaurant’s founding. Crawfish Etoufee, Creole Seafood Stew, and Southern Fried Catfish are just of a few of the authentic Cajun entrees that have been spicing up the taste buds of their loyal customer base for more than 25 years.
RT’s consistency in creating delicious lunch and dinner options has won it many accolades throughout the years. In fact, the restaurant
earned a spot on the coveted list of the Top 100 Restaurants in Washington D.C. by the Washingtonian Magazine for 14 consecutive years. It has also been featured on the Food Channel, and won awards for Favorite Soup and Favorite Appetizer from the Washington Post. And honoring the value of exceptional food at affordable prices, Northern Virginia Magazine added RT’s to its list of Best Bargain Restaurants of 2007.
But don’t take their word for it—try it yourself. RT’s is open for both lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, and for dinner only on Sunday.
The lunch menu includes a wide selection of appetizers, soups (including their famous she-crab soup with a Cajun twist), Po Boys, salads and entrees. The seafood lover will rejoice over the selection of seafood entrees offered at a lunch price—try the Maryland Fried Oysters, a house specialty partnered with a cup of Alligator Stew topped with chopped egg and a touch of sherry. Or spice up your day with the creatively named “Death by Gumbo,” which includes shrimp, oysters, lump crab, crawfish and andouille sausage.
RT’s dinner menu includes many of the same dishes offered at lunch, as well as some chef’s creations that are just too great to be savored mid-day. One such meal is the Cajun Veal Oscar, a delectable combination of veal, spicy lump
crab, crawfish, spring onions and béarnaise sauce. There are also ample selections of expertly prepared steaks, including an 8 oz. filet mignon served with sautéed mushrooms and black peppercorn sauce. Finish off any evening with one of the restaurant’s signature desserts and you’ll be wishing you’d saved room for more. A classic pecan pie served warm with chantilly cream is a customer favorite, as is the bananas foster cake, served with warm caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. Their latest and greatest “Coconut Cake Melvin” has already become a widely popular signature dessert.
Capitol Hill lawmakers, young professionals, locals and frequent visitors all make dining at RT’s a regular occurrence. In fact, the casual neighborhood restaurant has also attracted a boatload of celebrities and famous politicians, including former President Clinton and Vice Presidet Gore and many members of congress and the senate.
RT’s Restaurant is located at 3804 Mt. Vernon Ave. in Alexandria. Reservations are recommended. Contact the restaurant at
703-684-6010 or visit them online at www.rtsrestaurant.net.

THE WAREHOUSE BAR & GRILL”Great Steaks... Awesome Seafood.”
Located in the heart of scenic Old Town, The Warehouse Bar & Grill is a standby for expertly grilled steaks and fresh seafood in a great atmosphere. Open since 1987, the restaurant occupies a former pool hall on King Street and has an easy Southern yet classy feel.
As a longtime fixture on the Alexandria restaurant scene, The Warehouse has a strong and loyal local following—folks come back again and again for the consistent quality of food and unbeatable service they’ve experienced for years on end. Many visitors also make a point of returning to this special place on their subsequent trips to Alexandria and the D.C. metro area, touting the excellent seafood and unique atmosphere as the best in the area.
Indoor and outdoor seating are available, but you may want to make a reservation for inside just to be sure you take in one of the restaurant’s most famous features—dozens of caricatures of famous (and some not-so-famous) people line the walls of the historic building. The dynamic framed faces of celebrities and politicians not only provide ample conversation starters, but also add a light-hearted and whimsical feel throughout the bustling yet intimate eatery.
A lunch at The Warehouse is a perfect rest during a day exploring Old Town. Fresh seafood specialties from their dinner menu are available, as well as a whole selection of sandwiches named after famous historical Alexandrians. After you learn about Alexandria’s history, why not try the Mayor Ramsey? The signature sandwich features an 8 oz. blackened yellow fin tuna steak topped with roasted red peppers and garlic mayonnaise and
served on a sesame seed bun. Other “historical” sandwiches include the Lord Fairfax, the John Carlyle and the Thomas Bradfield.
The famous New Orleans-style Sunday brunch is one of the most popular in the region, offering several seafood offerings complemented by a wide selection of egg entrées, salads and sandwiches. Spice up your brunch with a Creole specialty—Eggs Hussarde—which is primarily Eggs Benedict, but with the addition of grilled sliced tomato and a red wine sauce. All brunch entrées are served with a side of strawberries and champagne, or strawberries and cream.
Dinner at The Warehouse offers the most diverse and mouth-watering menu of all. There is a wide selection of meats and poultry, including their signature 20 oz. Certified Angus T-bone steak, grilled to perfection and served with Cajun onion straws and roasted potatoes. Among the many seafood offerings, the all-lump crab cakes are the house favorite—two crab cakes topped with jumbo lump crabmeat and a lemon butter sauce, served with fresh asparagus and roasted potatoes provides a delectable combination of savory goodness.
You’ll find many Cajun-inspired menu options at the Warehouse, such as the Cajun-style meatloaf made of beef, veal and pork and topped with mushroom gravy and creamy potatoes. Pasta jambalaya and a Louisiana Crawfish Etouffee are also spicy classics.
Merging the best of surf, turf and Cajun is the Steak Pontchartrain, which includes a 6 oz. grilled filet mignon topped with the signature jumbo lump crab and sauce béarnaise, served with fresh asparagus and creamy potatoes.
What you will hear both locals and visitors raving about most is the famous she-crab soup. The restaurant’s own original recipe for the classic blue crab bisque/chowder is deliciously seasoned and a little spicy. The soup is almost a tourist attraction itself.
A full bar with an extensive wine selection provides ample drink selections for diners. Or pop in for a cocktail—you’ll feel a touch of Southern class while sitting at the antique mahogany bar.

THE WHARF RESTAURANT“It’s All About The Seafood!!”
Find the quintessential Old Town dining experience at The Wharf, one of Alexandria’s favorite dining establishments and a longstanding favorite for fresh seafood cooked to perfection.
Only one block from the waterfront, The Wharf occupies one of the many historic buildings lining King Street, Alexandria’s main thoroughfare. The building is believed to have been built in the 1790s, and since then has been used as a warehouse for imports and a feed and grain warehouse. In the early 1970s, the 200-year-old building was renovated and turned into a restaurant. The owners at the time tried to retain as much historical significance in the building as possible—they preserved the original wood columns and beams, as well as the original stone and brick interior. In fact, traces of Civil War era fire can be seen in the charred texture of the some of the wood inside. All of these details give the restaurant a distinctively historic ambiance.
Since the ‘70s, diners have been coming to The Wharf for a consistent selection of the freshest seafood and American classics. Some of the favorite specialties include the spicy she-crab soup with cream and sherry, the whole Maine lobster served steamed or stuffed, Chesapeake Bay soft-shell crabs and their delectable all lump crab cakes. Broiled to perfection, The Wharf’s crab cakes were recognized by the Washingtonian Magazine as being the region’s best. Food critic Robert Shoffner writes, “The Wharf’s moist, strikingly sweet cake was not only the best baked or broiled cake on this survey, it is one of the best in the metro area.” Served in a one-cake portion at lunch and two at dinner and complemented by crisp fries and pleasant coleslaw, the platter lives up to the praise the floor staff uses to promote it.
Other critics have also raved about The Wharf. Warren Rojas, food editor of Northern Virginia Magazine, says, “Just a few bites of their daily seafood specials are often all that is required to flood the mind with deep appreciation for the ocean’s generous bounty.”
Mouth-watering seafood specials are written on the blackboard outside of the restaurant’s entrance, enticing hungry passersby to drop in for a bite of fresh seafood with the chef’s innovative touch.
While seafood is their specialty, The Wharf’s menu also offers a selection of meat and poultry that any meat-lover will drool over—try the Grilled
Center Cut Filet Mignon with cracked black peppercorns and mushroom sauce, the Grilled “Kansas” City Strip, which comes with spicy onion crisps and fresh horseradish sauce, or the Cashew Crusted Chicken, served with fresh spinach, shiitake mushrooms and a ginger-soy beurre blanc.
The menu also includes some savory steak and seafood combos, which provide the best of both worlds—a Bistro filet is partnered with either an all lump crab cake, stuffed or garlic shrimp, or broiled sea scallops.
For lunch, The Wharf offers a wide variety of sandwiches, po’ boys, soups, hot appetizers, raw oysters and small salads. There is also a selection of Entrée Salads, which include entrée-inspired meats and seafood paired with fresh veggies and salad. For the bigger appetite, dinner entrees are also available for the mid-day crowd.
A full bar provides all your favorite cocktails, beers and wines, plus the best selection of vodkas, gins, single
malt scotches and single barrel bourbons in Old Town.Through the years, The Wharf has become one of Alexandria’s most
popular and reliable restaurants. Visitors and locals alike make the trip to Old Town for the fresh seafood and historic ambiance. For this reason, reservations are recommended.
History has been written inside the walls of The Wharf, with its
1790’s style architecture featuring original wood
columns and beams that are charred black from a Civil War fire.

2010 Alexandria’s Shopping & Dining Guide 29
30 www.visitorsguidenetwork.com
With history, comes hauntings—or at least tales of hauntings—and Alexandria is filled with both. Every historian will tell you of the dozens of fascinating people that once called Alexandria home, but only on
a ghost tour will you learn how those same people are still claiming a place in Alexandria’s past and present.
There is always something alluring about the unknown. The desire to find that missing piece of history, the anticipation of a new experience, or the curiosity piqued by a flickering shadow caught out of the corner of your eye. Perhaps it is this inquisitive nature that has made Alexandria Colonial Tours’ Ghost & Graveyard Tour the spectacle that it is today. In fact, this 28-year-old tour has become so popular that ghost-hunters are now able to attend both public and private Ghost & Graveyard tours—that is, if they dare…
Gather up your courage as costumed guides lead you through the dark brick-lined streets carrying authentic 18th century lanterns, stopping at historic homes, buildings and graveyards with legendary tales of ghosts and unexplainable happenings. While learning about the unfinished business of many old Alexandrians, you’ll also get a personalized glimpse into the town’s fascinating history.
The tour begins, as all Alexandria Colonial Tours do, at the Ramsay House Visitors Center, named after one of the city’s founders, William Ramsay, a Scottish merchant and friend of George Washington. Today, the historic house is the official Visitors Center of Alexandria, and though it may seem perfectly cheery on a sunny afternoon while you pick up your brochures, legend has it that the ghost of Mr. Ramsay often comes to visit after dark.
Several employees have reported seeing a peculiar man in colonial attire after the center has closed, and others have reported hot coffee, straightened desks and filed papers early in the morning, well before
anybody else has been there. It seems Ramsay, ever the proponent of Alexandria, still wants to help out his fellow citizens.
From there, your enthusiastic tour guide will lead you through the darkened streets of Alexandria, pointing out some of the most notable Alexandrians and the hauntings they have left behind. One such unforgettable ghost story is that of Laura Schaefer, a bride-to-be who met her death shortly before her wedding day. While trying on her wedding dress, it caught fire from a burning candle. Not being able to open the windows to yell for help, she flung herself down the stairs of the house in a flaming ball of fire and died shortly after. It is said that many visitors at the house can feel intense heat near the stairs and in her room, and many unexplained sounds like weeping and knocking
have been reported. Not all of the tales are tragic however—
many are humorous accounts, such as the quarrel between brothers competing for the same love interest or a boy who was sent to buy ice for a party and came back with used ice that had been keeping dead bodies from rotting.
And while each story of ghosts and ghouls is more entertaining than the last, they all give a glimpse into the city’s past, when you could find George Washington at the local tavern, when the icehouse also served as the morgue, and when it wasn’t uncommon to step in horse droppings in the street.
At the end of the tour, you hear one last chilling ghost story before you’re left to fend for yourself in an old graveyard, knowing full well that you may not be alone.
Alexandria Colonial Tours is located at 201 King St. in Old Town Alexandria. All tours begin at the corner of King and Fairfax Streets at the Ramsay House Visitors Center. Other tours offered include Alexandria History, African-American History, Christmas Tour, Women’s Tour,
scavenger hunts and more. To learn more and make reservations, call 703-519-1749 or visit www.alexcolonialtours.com.
