Aloha! We welcome you to join us April 28th-May 1st in Honolulu on the Island of Oahu in the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. Our meeting will be at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel in downtown Honolulu on the sands of Waikiki beach. Don’t forget to bring your favorite Hawaiian shirt and shorts because the dress code for our meeting will be Island casual.
The Sheraton is in the middle of the shopping and dining section of Honolulu with many fine restaurants just a block or two away. When not in the meetings or sipping Mai-Tai’s at the pool bar, there are many exciting things to do in Oahu such as a visit to Pearl Harbor, North Shore Surfing, shopping at the International Market, or for the outdoor types, hiking Diamond Head or taking a Catamaran ride.
We have an excellent technical program with the highlight being a trip to a Formosan termite test site on the windward side of the Island. Builders will discuss the problems of building wood homes in Hawaii and how they deal with the termite problem. Many excellent speakers have been lined up for the meetings.
The Spouse/Guest Program is almost complete and it will certainly have the flavor of the islands. The social activities will include the Pickler’s Prance 5K walk/run and the Hackers Classic Golf Tournament at Turtle Bay. The hotel is located right on Waikiki beach and there are many beach activities such as surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling or just watching the sea turtles in the beautiful blue ocean.
The weather should be sunny and in the high 70’s or low 80’s. Come join us in beautiful Hawaii.
Mahalo!

Where to stay How to get there
AWPA’s 109th Annual Meeting will take place at the Sheraton Waikiki, which is located at the center of world-famous Waikiki Beach. The city/mountain view rate for this meeting is $195 USD, partial ocean view is $225 USD, and oceanfront is $255 USD. Additional room types and plans may be available at higher rates. Book your room as soon as possible, since the hotel is beginning to sell out on several nights. To obtain rates and availability, please visit the Annual Meeting web page (www.awpa.com/meetings/annual/hawaii.asp) and follow the link to book hotel reservations online. Alternately, you may reserve a room by calling 1-800-782-9488. Be sure to tell the reservations agent that you are attending the American Wood Protection Association meeting to obtain the group rate. The cut-off date for reservations is Thursday April 4, 2013, but again, you should try to reserve a room as soon as possible. You may be able to find rooms at other area hotels with lower rates, but please note that AWPA receives complimentary meeting space based on hotel occupancy, so we hope you will stay at the host hotel so that we may keep our registration fees at reasonable rates.
Honolulu is served by the Honolulu International Airport (HNL), which offers hundreds of commercial flights per day on 27 international and domestic carriers. Long flights from the mainland to Hawaii fill up early, so if you haven’t booked your flights yet, please consider doing so now. The hotel is located about 9 miles from the airport, but traffic can be congested in Honolulu. Rental cars, taxicabs (about $35, depending on traffic), and a shuttle service ($13 each way) are available at the airport. The hotel’s $12 resort fee includes self parking for one vehicle, but rental cars are also available at the hotel.2013 AWPA Annual Meeting Registration Fees (in USD)

Suppliers’ ShowcaseThe Suppliers’ Showcase is a great way to reach potential customers and make them aware of your products and/or services at a very reasonable price. The cost for exhibit space is only $850 (for early registration) and includes an approximately 10 foot wide space, one table, and two chairs. This amount includes full meeting registration for one person, member or non-member. The Suppliers’ Showcase is normally held in conjunction with coffee breaks for a more inviting and relaxing interaction with potential sales contacts. We intentionally limit the number of spaces to maximize your opportunities to meet the people who need your products. To register, please use the appropriate box on the Annual Meeting registration form or register online.
2013 AWPA Hacker’s ClassicMany of you will remember the Inaugural Champions Tour Skins Game, featuring Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Gary Player and Chi Chi Rodriguez, played in 1988 on the Fazio Course at the Turtle Bay Golf Club, Oahu, Hawaii. AWPA has selected this Course as the site for the 2013 AWPA Hackers Classic Golf Tournament, to be held on Sunday morning, April 28, 2013. The Fazio Course has been named one of the top courses in the State of Hawaii. Located along the coastline of Oahu’s fabled North Shore, the course offers breathtaking views and challenging golf. It is considered a seaside links course with Bermuda grass fairways and Paspalum greens. This Hackers Classic promises to be the best yet, with a scramble format, shotgun start, contests, prizes, golf shirts, fun, and lunch at Lei Lei’s Bar & Grill at the Turtle Bay Resort.
What Banquet? This year, we’re trying something new....in light of the fact that there are so many great restaurants and nightlife venues only steps away from the hotel, we’ve decided to replace the banquet with an Awards Reception on Tuesday evening with Pickler’s Prance and Hacker’s Classic awards, and AWPA Officer/Executive Committee installation. You’ll have a great time with your fellow AWPA attendees before dinner that night.
Dates to Remember:Standardization proposals are due March 2
Early registration discounts end March 8Hotel reservations cut-off date is April 4
Pre-Registration closes on April 5
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Task Group and Technical Committee MeetingsTask Group Meetings are currently scheduled for Sunday, April 28, and will be posted to the website as time slots are requested. Usually, if more than four hours of total Task Group time is requested, we will split the meetings into two separate, concurrent tracks in order to minimize the number of meetings on Sunday morning during the golf and 5K events. Committee Meetings will take place on Wednesday, May 1 (and May 2 if necessary) and will be posted to the website as agendas are received from Committee Chairs. The only Technical Committees required to meet are those with proposals for standardization, which must be submitted to AWPA by the deadline of March 2 2013. Other Committees are permitted to meet if so requested by the Committee Chair, but scheduling priority is given to those Committees with pending proposals.
Things to See and Do in HawaiiWe’re not sure why you’d want to do anything other than attend the technical presentations at the Annual Meeting, but just in case you do, the hotel is situated in the heart of world-famous Waikiki Beach. Just a short walk or cab ride away are many local attractions such as museums, shopping, excellent restaurants, and many outdoor activities. Consider taking surf lessons, a submarine ride, or maybe even try your hand paddling an outrigger canoe. Other interesting things to see and do are well within an easy driving distance. For a complete look at island attractions, visit the Hawaii Convention and Visitor’s Bureau website: www.gohawaii.com.
2013 General ElectionsIn late February, ballot notices for the election of AWPA Officers, Executive Committee members, and Nominating Committee members for 2013-2014 were e-mailed to each AWPA member with an e-mail address on file. Paper ballots were sent to those without an e-mail address. If you are an AWPA member in good standing and have not yet received a ballot, please let us know and we will send another one to you. Remember, ballots must be received on or before Friday, April 12, 2013 to be counted. Only those members who are dues-current for 2013 are eligible to vote.
Pickler’s PranceThe 2013 Pickler’s Prance 5K Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by Rio Tinto Minerals, will take participants on a tour of world-famous Waikiki Beach. This event will take place the morning of Sunday, April 28. While there is no charge to participate, you are required to register to indicate your agreement with the waiver. You should also provide your shirt size. You may register for the event online or by marking the appropriate box on the printed registration form.
Spouse/Guest Program HighlightsWe hope your spouse or guest will join us for this year’s meeting in Hawaii! Sunday evening, registered spouses/guests will see old friends and make new ones at the President’s Reception. On Monday after the Keynote Address and the Award of Merit presentation, the group will go on a culinary adventure, tasting a variety of foods that are uniquely Hawaiian while enjoying the most beautiful sights on the Island of Oahu. Tuesday morning, registered spouses and guests will have a leisurely breakfast where they can get together and plan a day of activities on their own, such as shopping in the International Market, lunch on Lewers Street, a hiking trip at Diamond Head, or perhaps just relaxing on the beach. Also, registered spouses and guests are invited to attend the Tuesday evening awards reception.
