Determining Her Birth Year

Hannah Saxton McNeill of Vinton County, Ohio, and Marion and Kossuth Counties, Iowa

For various reasons some people do not want anyone to know their age. Hannah Saxton McNeill was one of those people. She was born on December 9, the question is, what year? Hannah even maintained control of her obituary. Her grave marker set her birth year of 1858 in stone, but was it correct?

Hannah was probably several years older than her husband, Leonard O. McNeill, a fact that she apparently wanted to disguise. Determining Hannah’s birth year required using the genealogical proof standard.2

Hannah Saxton was born before birth registration in Ohio. A reasonably exhaustive search found a myriad of resources indicating she could have been born as early as 1857 or as late as 1864. These records include her gravestone, death certificate, obituary, marriage record, the birth record for her daughter, a family history, the family Bible, and census records.

The chart shows 1858 as the most likely year for Hannah’s birth. However, no original source with primary information provides direct evidence to answer the problem. Furthermore, contradictory evidence exists. Thus, an analysis of each record is required.

In support of an 1858 birth year:

Several pieces of evidence support an 1858 birth year. One is her gravestone “Mother Hannah S. McNeill, 1858 – 1934”3

Hannah’s husband, Leonard, probably provided the information to the gravestone engraver. Leonard was younger than she, so he did not have primary information of her birth. Leonard was also the informant for her death certificate, which likewise supports the 1858 birth year. 4

The birth record of Hannah’s only child, born 14 September 1892, gives Hannah’s age as 33, suggesting a birth year of 1858.5 The provider of information to register the daughter’s birth is unknown. However, that person probably did not witness the mother’s birth.

A family history, which Hannah assisted in writing, states she was born 9 December 1858.6 While Hannah provided this information, the family story has undergone several derivatives, so its accuracy can be questioned.

A complicating factor is that a birth year calculation is required when considering the census records. Her birthday fell after each census date, therefore, her birth year must be calculated by adding “1” to her age as listed on the census to obtain her age at her upcoming birthday. Then, subtract her upcoming age from the current census year to obtain her birth year.

Four widely dispersed census records support similar results. The 1930,7 1910,8 1880,9 and 186010 records point to a birth year of 1858.

Ineffective evidence:

Hannah’s obituary and her marriage record do not support, nor do they contradict, the argument. Her obituary does not give her age or her birth year. In fact, it states, “Knowing the end was coming Mrs. McNiell [sic] wrote out the foregoing facts shortly before she died, and told members of her family they could be found in her Bible.”11 In other words, she wrote her own obituary and controlled that it did not include her age. And, their marriage record in 1888 shows both Leonard and Hannah as 21, apparently indicating they were “of legal age” to be married.12

would enjoy it. Marie started it or did most of it when she was in college & I brought it up to date last year. Not up to date either—I

decided that was too much for me. Every family will have to take their own on from here.” The booklet provides two typewritten pages of

narrative and nearly three pages of descendent names of William Garner Saxton and Josephine (nee Arnold) Saxton, but only a few dates

and places—apparently all based on memory or common family knowledge. According to the story, Hannah “supplied a large part of this

material.” Thus, the story was begun prior to Hannah’s death in 1934.

Contradictory evidence:

The family Bible states Hannah was born 9 December 1859.13 While this should be valuable evidence, all of the handwriting in the Bible appears the same and the information was probably written in one sitting, possibly from memory and hearsay, thus throwing its veracity into question.

The 1885,14 1895,15 and 191516 Iowa state census records suggest a birth year of 1859. The 187017 U.S. census indicates a birth year of 1857; 190018 supports a birth year of 1862, and the 192019 and 192520 records point to a birth year of 1864. Census records are widely known to contain many errors, and should only be considered as clues. In this case, it is easy to question if the errors were creations of the possible informant who may have had her reasons for providing misleading data. Of these records, only the 1859 birth year possibility is supported by other evidence, the family Bible, and its truthfulness, as already discussed, is questionable.

Analysis of the sources, information, and evidence regarding Hannah’s birth year:

Conclusion:

The date for the 1860 census was 1 June. In 1860 Hannah is shown as age 1, with a probable younger sibling, age 2/12.21 If Hannah had been born in December 1859, she would have only been 6 months old on the census date. If she had been born in 1857, she would have been listed as age 2. Therefore, since this is the census record closest to the event of Hannah’s birth, and since she apparently had a younger sibling, it appears Hannah was likely born in 1858.

This conclusion is supported by the family history, her daughter’s birth record, four census records, and the date carved in stone. While contradictions exist, the analysis of the sources, information, and evidence clearly point to Hannah’s birth year as 1858.

Biographical Data

1 William Garner1 Saxton was born 5 September 1829 in Harrison County, Ohio and died 15 February 1899 in Marion County, Iowa.22 He was buried in Lincoln Cemetery, Marion County, Iowa.23 On 26 August 1851 William married Phoebe Shriner, in Vinton County, Ohio.24

On 15 February 1857 William Garner Saxton married Josephine (nee Arnold) Keeton. 25 Josephine was born 27 January 1824 in Washington County, Ohio. On 12 December 1844 she married Calvin Keeton. He left in June 1848 and their marriage was reportedly dissolved on 29 March 1852.26 Josephine died on 9 July 1891 and is buried in Lincoln Cemetery, Marion County, Iowa.27 Josephine Arnold and Calvin Keeton were the parents of one son. John A. Keeton was born circa 1848 and died 14 April 1914 in Lucas County, Iowa.28

William Garner Saxton and Phoebe Shriner were the parents of one child.

2 i. SILAS SAXTON was born 22 June 1852 in Vinton County, Ohio.29 Last known residence of Silas is Marion County, Iowa, in 1880.30 Family tradition suggests that he went west and only heard from once by his half brother Paul.31

William Garner Saxton and Josephine Arnold were the parents of six children.

3 i. PAUL SAXTON was born was born 17 November 1857 in Vinton County, Ohio. He died 17 March 192832 and is buried at Miriam Cemetery, Maryville, Missouri.33 On 26 May 1878 he

married Isabelle Riggle.34 Isabelle died 6 February 1903.35 On 18 January 1905 he married Mrs. Cynthia A. (nee Hildreth) Swallow.36 Cynthia died 26 Nov 1950 at Maryville, Missouri.37

+ 4 ii. HANNAH SAXTON was born 9 December 185838 in Vinton County, Ohio39 and died 28 July 1934 at Swea City, Iowa.40 On 15 August 1888 Hannah married Leonard O. McNeill.41

5 iii. LYDIA SAXTON was born 2 May 1860 at McArthur, Vinton County, Ohio. She died 9 October 1923 and is buried at Swea City, Harrison Township, Kossuth County, Iowa.42 On 24 February 1892 she married Frank M. Koons.43

6 iv. CHARLES BARTON SAXTON was born 17 September 186144 in Wapello County, Iowa.45 He died 10 November 1918 of apoplexy.46 He is buried at Swea City, Harrison Township, Kossuth County, Iowa.47 On 21 April 1885 he married Lury Matilda Stillwell.48

7 v. JOHN CLINTON SAXTON was born 6 December 1862 in Wapello County, Iowa. He died in November 1919.49 On 26 February 1890 he married Ettie Caroline Lohse.50

8 vi. SARAH SAXTON was born 19 October 1864 in Marion County, Iowa. She died 23 March 192851 at Colville, Washington.52 On 21 March 1894 she married William Harner.53

4 Hannah2 Saxton (William1) was born 9 December 185854 in Vinton County, Ohio55 and died 28 July 1934 at Swea City. 56 She was interred at Harrison Township Cemetery. 57 On 15 August 1888 Hannah Saxton married Leonard O. McNeill at Marion County, Iowa. 58 Leonard was born 8 August 186759 in Marion County, Iowa60 and died 1 December 1945 at Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.61 He was buried in Harrison Township Cemetery, Kossuth County, Iowa.62

On 24 August 1935 Leonard married Mrs. Mary E. Adams63 (nee Cash). She was born on 17 August 1877 at Manchester, England.64 She was married to Charles F. Adams in Chicago, Illinois, on 15 August 1900 and they were divorced on 11 January 1932.65 Mary died on 29 March 196866 and is interred at Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.67

Hannah Saxton and Leonard O. McNeill were the parents of one child.

9 i. NADA JOSEPHINE MCNEILL was born 14 September 1892 in Columbia, Marion County, Iowa68 and died 18 September 1961 at the Iowa Lutheran Home in Madrid, Iowa.69 She is interred at Harrison Township Cemetery north of Swea City, Iowa.70 On 16 October 1912 she married Robert E. Pehrson.71

The Iowa Genealogical Society issues certificates to persons who are directly descended from Iowa Pioneers. Applications must prove direct descent and prove that the ancestor settled in Iowa

• By 1846, to receive a Statehood Certificate;

• By 1856, to receive a Pioneer Certificate;

• More than 100 years prior to the date of application, for a Century Certificate.

Applicants may apply for certificates to be issued to themselves or to other persons. The person to whom the certificate is issued need not currently live in Iowa.

The purpose of the Certificate Program is to recognize families with Iowa roots, encourage people to undertake genealogical research, and to provide genealogical resources for researches in our library.

The information and application are available at the library or by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to IGS. You may also find the information and application on our website www.iowagenealogy.org/research_resources/index.htm. The cost is $10.00 per certificate. The certificate is suitable for framing.

United Spanish War Veterans By Susan Claman

The Spanish-American War lasted less than a year from 21 April 1898 to 11 April 1899 although actual hostilities ceased on 13 August 1898. Fifty-seven thousand three hundred twenty nine (57,329) regular troops participated, 223,235 militia and volunteer troops and 31,959 Navy personnel (this number includes officers in the US Marine Corps but not officers in the US Navy proper) for a total of 312,523. Soon after the men returned home they began to form veterans’ organizations. Originally there were several organizations. In 1904 three of the most prominent merged into a single organization known as the United Spanish War Veterans (USWV).

The TAPS form included the name of camp, camp number, department of (state), file date, name and highest rank in USWV, US Service (highest rank), Co, ship/regt, married or single, number and age of children, place of birth, place of death, date of death, buried in <blank> cemetery at <blank> with military honors, grave in charge of and camp number.

The following is a partial index of the death records we have at the IGS library. All information is transcribed as written on the form. To obtain a copy of the one record (1 sheet, two sides) send a request to IGS. The cost is $5.00 for members or $7.50 for non-members plus $1.00 for postage and handling.

Naturalizations - First Papers The Iowa Genealogical Society recived a number of naturalization documents from the district court files in Polk County. Volunteer members scanned the documents and, when the ink was faded, transcribed the information. Great care was taken to assure each name was correct with the coordinating scan. The documents were then indexed for easy use.

The images on this page are available to IGS members for $5.00 or to non-members for $7.50 per sheet plus $2.50 postage and handling by writing to IGS (see page 1 for the address) with the requested names. The front side, back side and transcription for an individual all are included in the mailing.

The indexing of the naturalization images used the following guidelines.

• If there was more than one date on a document, the earliest date was used in the name. The dating system of "year-month-day" was used.

• If the immigrant's signature was legible, his spelling was used for the name.

• If the name was difficult to decipher, other volunteers were consulted. Census indexes, city directories and Ancestry.com were also used to determine the name.

• In the rare instance of not being able to decipher a given name, the symbol ^^^ is used with the first initial of the name.

• There are a few documents in which the immigrant wrote his first name and the clerk wrote a different/similar name; i.e. Johannes vs. Jonathan or Charles vs. Carl. In these cases, the immigrant's signature was used as the name with the clerk's interpatation in parentheses.

• If the document originated in another county, the document was filed in Polk County Iowa.

• Even though the document was larger than 8x11 inches, the information on the back side may not have been that large. So the back side was usually scanned at the 8x11 size. No information was omitted to do this.

• Depending on the original paper size, the document was bi-folded or tri-folded to about 3x8 inch size. The name was written by the court clerk across one end for filing. This resulted in the "back side" of the document.

• There were some documents where the name on the back side did not agree with the name on the actual document. (Sometimes this is the name of the court clerk, which is the first name appearing on the document).
