Types of Fish Swimming!• There are four different ways that fish swim. They are: – Accelera.ng: Accelerators have slim bodies with their fins pushed towards the end of the body and a large tail for fast bursts of speed.
– Cruising: Cruisers have a body shaped like a football with a narrow, thin tail.
Types of Fish Swimming (continued) – Maneuvering: Maneuvers have a round body with large fins that are paired together.
– Generalist: Generalists show characterisQcs of all three types of swimming but they are not specialists.

Gait Transition !• Gait Transi.on is the switch between two types of swimming (Labriform vs. Undulatory) It is similar to walking vs. running of humans.
Goal of Experiment!• Based on the fish’s body morphology, habitat, and the food it eats, we can predict its swimming performance.
Materials & Methods!• Fish Dissec.ons Myomeres:
Muscles of the fish
Materials & Methods!
• We measured 18 preserved fish found about the Bio department
• Image J: A computer program used to take fish measurements.
• Body Length and Width Measurement
Materials & Methods!• Dorsal Fin Area • Tail Fin Area
Materials and Methods!• In order to study how the fish swam, we placed them into a
flume. A flume is like a treadmill that allows us to see how the fish swim at different speeds.
Cichlid in Flume!• Cichlid
Stingray in Flume!• SQngray

Goldfish in Flume!• Goldfish

Discussion!• We have accomplished our goal and have learned about how the morphology of fishes affects their type of swimming.
• Fish swim differently at slow speeds compared to higher speeds (Gait transiQons/Flume tesQng)
• Fish dissecQons allowed us to see the different muscles of fish and taking body measurements let us compare the different types of swimmers using mathemaQcal analysis.
• A trip to the aquarium gave us the ability to see a variety of swimmers.
We would like to give our sincere thanks to Dr. Gerry, Dr. Phelan and our counselors, Tess and Jess. We would also
like to thank our audience for listening to our presentation and NIH for providing the funding for this program.!
