Internships and PHEAA Work-Study Eligible PositionsAwbury Arboretum, Summer 2012
About Awbury Arboretum (www.awbury.org)
Located in the historic Germantown neighborhood of Northwest Philadelphia, Awbury
Arboretum is a 55-acre public landscape and historic house. Awbury hosts educational and
service learning programs, and partners with organizations with focus areas in watershed
protection, urban agriculture, horticulture, and food systems education to creatively steward and
interpret its site, thereby connecting an urban community with nature and history.
The Arboretum is composed of rolling lawns, mature specimen trees and copses, special
gardens, a bird sanctuary, ponds, wetlands, and meadows. It is also the home of the Awbury
Agricultural Village with 60 community garden plots, a two-acre organic farm operated by the
Weaver's Way Cooperative, a Children’s Vegetable Garden operated by Weavers Way
Community Programs, and shared greenhouses.
Additionally the Arboretum provides horticultural and landscape training to prison inmates
through the Roots to Re-Entry program; a Community Apiary and beekeeping classes; Summer
Field Studies programming for children; and horticultural outreach, consulting and landscaping
services to the general public.
Summer 2012 Available Positions
● Summer Educational Programs Assistant*(PHEAA job code T44 - Education Assistant)
The Summer Educational Programs Assistant will help promote and implement
field ecology and environmental education programs for children aged 3-12;
develop instructional materials, activities and displays; assist with set-up and
instruction of educational programs; and collect program data and feedback.
This position is for May-September, though start and end dates are flexiblebased on student’s schedule and availability. Ideally the student will commit to 20
hours per week, between 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday, with the possibility of
some weekend hours for special events.

● Communications Assistant*
(PHEAA job code J04 - Communications Assistant)
The Communications Assistant will assist the Education and CommunityOutreach department with Media Relations, Social Media, website maintenance
and development, drafting community announcements and newsletters, creatingbrochures and fliers, and researching prospective community and mediacontacts.
This position is for May through September, though start and end dates areflexible based on student’s schedule and availability. Ideally the student willcommit to 1-2 days per week, between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.
● Volunteer Coordinator*
(PHEAA job code H25 - Volunteer Coordinator)
The Volunteer Coordinator will help recruit, train and supervise volunteers for
Awbury's Education and Community programming; develop and promote
volunteer opportunities; develop volunteer policies and procedures; schedule
volunteer activities; and maintain volunteer records.
This position is for May through September, though start and end dates are
flexible based on student’s schedule and availability. Ideally the student will
commit to 1-2 days per week, between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday-
Friday.
● Landscape and Horticulture Assistant*(PHEAA job code A04 - Horticulture Assistant)
The Landscape Assistant will assist the Landscape Manager in planning andimplementing landscape designs, horticultural research, plant and wildlifeidentification, invasive species management and removal, and administrativesupport and communications for the Landscape Committee.
This position is for May through September, though start and end dates areflexible based on student’s schedule and availability. Ideally the student willcommit to 1-2 days per week, between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.

● Archival Assistant Internship(Unpaid Internship; not eligible for PHEAA work-study funding)
The Archival Assistant will arrange, describe, and otherwise process collections;
research, plan, and execute archival outreach efforts including possible exhibits;
and assist in the use, copying, and secure storage of materials.
Internship start and end dates are flexible. Ideally the applicant will commit to 1-2
days per week, between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.
