Three of the largest development banks in the world, European Investment Bank (EIB), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), have embedded Aware for ProjectsTM into the early stages of their project climate risk management systems. Project officers use the tool to understand the potential climate risks to their projects and to identify those projects which may require more detailed climate risk assessments.

Aware for ProjectsTM has screened over 700 investment projects worldwide to raise awareness on climate and geological related risks. It is designed to help any organization investing in infrastructure-related projects to begin building resilience within their portfolios.

Aware for ProjectsTM is an online tool that allows users to screen their investments for climate risk. The tool works across a wide range of project types and sectors and requires no climate change expertise to use. Simply locate the project anywhere on a world map and answering six simple questions on how climate may influence the success of any given project, and Aware for ProjectsTM will generate a detailed report to guide further discussions and assessments of climate risk.

If you do not have sufficient information about the project, Aware for ProjectsTM offers an ‘express’ reporting option, which makes use of an in-built sensitivity matrix to answer the questions on your behalf. The ‘Express’ option can be run in less than 5 minutes.

Aware for ProjectsTM uses the latest climate model outputs (CMIP5) and other climate-related and geological hazard data. The tool combines this data with information about the sensitivity of your project to the hazards, and determines risk ratings for each individual hazard your project may face.

Bob Khosa has 25 years’ experience in environmental and climate risk management. He has been instrumental in the design and development Aware for ProjectsTM and has also helped to develop bespoke online tools for development banks and the oil & gas and mining sectors. He is responsible for developing database tools to assist in data analytics, as stand-alone applications or in the wider implementation of larger-scale software development projects.
