Stage 2 Geography Excursion

Last Wednesday the students in Stage 2 went to Wyrrabalong National Park at Bateau Bay to learn about different environments, conservation, and geography field work skills.

Here are some of the students’ recounts:

A Day At Wyrrabalong National Park – Isabella Koen 3/4M

Splash! Wow! A giant whale crashed around in the water at Wyrrabalong National Park. Me, Jamalia and Tamzen were whale watching on a giant hill. Our really nice tour guide, Christine showed us the path to a Red Spotted Gum Tree forest. We raced into the forest and when I arrived there I was highly amazed with what I saw. Most of the trees were Spotted gum trees but one was an ancient 100 year old Red Gum tree! Christine told us that it was where a Powerful Owl lived. She said that we should try hugging one of the trees because they felt like air conditioning vents and she was right. It was super cool!

We finished up at the red spotted Gum tree forest and went on a long, hot bush walk. On the bush walk we learnt about all the different types of trees like the Banksia, Blackbutt, Bloodwood tree and the Grass Tree. We saw 3 giant, ugly termite nests and a huge bush turkey nest. We listened for sounds and recorded them on sound maps.

Everyone was getting hungry so we stopped for lunch. After lunch we slowly walked down what felt like about one million steps to get to the beach. The beach looked lovely. It was a little windy but it was still a pretty sight. We made nature maps out of things we found at the beach, but it couldn’t be made out of anything man made. It could be made out of things like sticks, shells, leaves, seaweed, rocks to name a few.

Finally, it was time to go home. Within a blink of an eye, my amazing day at Wyrrabalong National park was over.

Wyrrabalong National Park – Jasmine Harmer 3/4M

”What about this? Would this fit?” said Sienna. The water splashed loudly like an elephant blowing out water. We were making a map of the park. Me and Sienna were putting dirt on sand to show the track and we made a bridge out of sticks.

Before all that we were at school. We marked the roll and then we skipped onto the bus. When we got there it was so pretty. We were so excited we were jumping up and down. Then we were shocked to see a perfect view. It was so beautiful. It was The Entrance.

Next we saw two ladies. Their names were Michelle and Christine. Christine was very loud. We marched up into the bush amd came to some Spotted Gum trees and in a second …. Mia was hugging a tree. It was so funny it even made Mr McNeill laugh. Then we had to draw a White Spotted Gum trees with these water pencils and then when we added water it was paint. It was like magic. Wow!

All of us marched like soldiers and and we went back up. 1...2...3...4...1...2...3...4. Then we did some field sketches. We saw a view of The Entrance and it was sooo pretty. The buildings were standing up proud and tall and then there were waves playing and chasing each other.

Afterward, we had recess and when we were playing we saw whales. Next we had an hour walk. It was so long. We saw Water Dragons and Bush Turkeys and they were scratching on the bark. We stopped to draw an air conditioner tree. A few minutes later we arrived at the park. We had lunch and we played another game. Then we went to the beach and we saw what felt like a 100,000 blue bottles and a dead puffer fish. We made nature maps and then it was the end of the day.

I arrived at Point Wolstoncroft on an overcast but mild morning on Wednesday in week 10 of Term 3. I felt a buzz of excitement about spending a day at the Central Coast Gifted and Talented (CCGAT) Camp and imagined that the 140 students also attending must have felt the same.

Two to four students from each of the 40 participating schools across the Central Coast were nominated to go to GAT Camp and participate in activities such as the giant swing, high ropes and kayaking. These same students also elected a subject area: Science, Mathematics, English, Sports Science, Visual Art or Drama and spent 4 days participating in lessons and higher order thinking activities in their nominated subject areas.

The camp is a wonderful way for students to meet other like-minded students and extend their gifts and talents in an encouraging environment:

“The particular areas or domains in which young gifted children will begin to develop talent will depend on both their natural abilities and environmental influences such as experiences they have, and support and

encouragement they receive.”

Natasha Siryj

Charlotte Harris, Gabrielle Sonter, Nicholas Brady and Alexus Guerin-Phan were Wadalba’s chosen students this year and the smiles on their faces from these photos speak volumes. They each had a rewarding and fun experience, making new friends and learning more about their chosen subject areas.

I would also like to thank Mrs Clarke who joined us this year to teach a Visual Art lesson for the Visual Art elective. We hope to have the privilege of your expertise again at Central Coast GAT Camp in the future.

Uniform BlitzAs part of our K-12 uniform blitz, Mr McGrath and all four Deputy Principals did a surprise initiative where they stood at our gates and handed any students in full school uniform a special Wadalba Winner raffle ticket. Students were drawn randomly from both Primary and High school to win Café vouchers for a free milkshake. Here are our lucky winners! You never know when they will be handing them out so make sure you are in uniform every day.

Gold Awards

Gold Awards are a very prestigious award at the very top of our merit system.

Our Gold Award system is as follows:

5 Commendations = Bronze Award

3 Bronze Awards = Silver Award

3 Silver Awards + Participation in extra-curricular school activities + participation in a community event = Gold Award

If you believe your child is eligible for a Gold Award at Presentation Day this year, please have your child bring their 3 silver awards to school to Ms Sanday by Friday 16th December. Ms Sanday will also chat to them around the other award criteria when they hand in their awards. There can be no extensions on this date as the medallions are sent away to be engraved with all of our other awards and trophies. If you have any questions around Gold Awards, please contact Ms Sanday.

Let’s show our talented singers and dancers our support! Hope to see you at the show!

Driving Other Students to Events

If you are driving a student to an event on behalf of another parent where you collect them from a public school, it is a requirement that you first present to the office staff your:

- Current drivers licence

- Current car registration

- Current comprehensive car insurance

- A permission letter from the parent of the student they are driving (this may be the excursion note).

Copies of the above are kept on file so while they are current there is no need to bring them in each time you drive another student.

Kindergarten Orientation

On Thursday we welcomed the Kindergarten 2019 students to Wadalba Community School for their first Kindergarten orientation session. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet and welcome the new children and parents into our school community. The new

Kindy’s had a busy morning playing with their new friends, listening to stories and learning songs. We look forward to seeing their smiling faces over the next 3 weeks for the remainder of our orientation sessions.

Year 7 Selective High School Applicationsfor 2020

Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 14 March 2019.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from mid-September 2018 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. The application website opens at that link on 9 October 2018 and closes on 12 November 2018. You must apply before the closing date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 9 October 2018.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.
