The rise in demand for sustainable technologies to the world’s water needs, green-building incentives, changes in regulations, water shortages, and the rising cost of water have all become principal drivers towards sustainable membrane bioreactor (MBR) solutions. Beyond the main drivers, a sustainable MBR system also leads to the most accurate type of design due to considering various parameters. Onsite MBRs offer the chance to no longer divert millions of gallons of treated and untreated water to our waterways, but to use onsite systems to keep or recharge local water sources.

BioBarrier® MBR and BioBarrier® HSMBR® (High Strength Membrane BioReactors) systems help to

conserve water by providing an alternative way to treat and reuse all wastewater generated on the property. Utilizing biological processes and membrane separation to treat wastewater, BioBarrier® treats the water to 99.9% clean of contaminants.

Why a BioBarrier® MBR?The onsite wastewater industry has a key role to to provide systems that ensure safe and effective treatment as treated wastewater returns to the environment; and Bio-Microbics does just that. The “hydraulically driven” BioBarrier® System uses passive aeration and process control technology to dramatically improve secondary wastewater treatment applications. A BioBarrier® system are simple to design and operate because it does not require external pumps, valves and the associated control system; nor, costly chemicals, additives, or add on disinfection.

NSF/ANSI Standards establish material, design, construction and performance requirements for onsite residential and commercial wastewater treatment systems:

EN-12566-3 Packaged and/or site assembled domestic wastewater treatment plants for up to 50 People, tested conform the EU Norm EN 12566-3 by PIA in Aachen (Germany) with the percentage reduction of infl uent pollutants.

During the 38-week test the BioBarrier performed the following levels: COD reduction 97.2%, BOD reduction 98.9%, Suspended Solids reduction 99.8%, NH4-N reduction 96.2%, fecal coliforms 99.9%.

BioBarrier® MBR is effective and proven to remove Fecal Coliform, E. Coli, and other harmful pathogens from greywater and blackwater.

Uniquely suited for water reuse applications, the BioBarrier ® allows for water to be recycled for onsite uses (i.e. toilet fl ushing, outdoor landscape irrigation, machine washdown water, fountains, make-up water for industrial processes, etc.); reducing potable water use usually by more than 40% just with irrigation alone for an average home!

How does the BioBarrier® System work?

1 In the primary settling zone, a SaniTEE® device is used to prevent large solids from entering the treatment zone.

2 A remote, above-ground blower introduces air (oxygen) into the treatment module to facilitate a robust circulation and aeration of wastewater.

3 Once inside the treatment tank, suspended treatment occurs. Optional LIXOR® System can be used for extra aeration for higher than normal BOD concentrations.

4 Immersed in the treatment tank, the BioBarrier®

module(s) and air grid(s) create an upward fl ow between membrane plates providing vigorous scouring action.

5 Water passes through the membranes for microfi ltration and ultrafi ltration processes.

6 Clear, odorless, treated water exits the system.

ONSITE MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR SYSTEMS

For this [Table 1], the initial (start-up) mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration of the system was less than 300 mg/L. The MLSS concentration allowed building up to as high as 12,000 mg/L, before the sludge was wasted from the system. It took about eight months before sludge wasting was required. Nearly 95% of the sludge was wasted. The remaining 5% of solids was used as microbial seed for the biological process.
