Awards Presented for Community Service

Sandakan Park was the setting for the 2018 Shire of Boyup Brook’s Australia Day celebrations on a glorious summer morning.

The crowd gathered to see 2017 Citizen of the Year, Ralph Knapp raise the Australian flag as the Boyup Brook Choristers led the singing of the National Anthem.

The Shire Councillors cooked up a storm for breakfast, accompanied by an array of fresh fruit.

As everyone ate and caught up with other community members, the choir sang some Australian classic songs and were followed by a performance by the recently formed ukulele group.

It was then time for Master of Ceremonies, Councillor (Cr) Lizz Rear, to commence the presentation of awards.

The first award was the Sports Person of the Year which was presented to Jodi Nield for her services to hockey and tennis. Having received this award in 2015, Jodi has continued to coach, play and promote both sports, including representing Western Australia in hockey at the Masters level for the past three years, winning the Bunbury Association’s Fairest and Best award and also being chosen as a batonbearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Citizen of the Year, Anne Ritson, received two separate nominations, a testament to her service to the town. Anne has a lengthy resume of community service including involvement with the Upper Blackwood Agricultural Society for nearly forty years. She is a regular at the hospital and Citizens’ Lodge providing chaplaincy work to those unable to attend church services. Girl Guides has played a significant role in Anne’s life, volunteering for fifty years. She has been a district and region leader, a member of the Executive Committee and has been awarded service commendations, Banksia and Wattle Awards and a bar to the Wattle Award.

Unfortunately there were no nominations received for the Young Achiever of the Year and Cr Rear encouraged everyone to look toward next year and search the town for someone worthy of this award.

Shire President, Graham Aird made a special presentation to the late Anthony ‘Tony’ Schreurs. The President’s Award was inscribed with “Awarded for outstanding leadership and contribution to the agricultural industry. Tony’s dedication to the local community provided long-term employment opportunities and showcased Boyup Brook to the wider region for over forty years.” Cr Aird spoke of Tony’s long serving role in developing Powertrak into one of the largest employers in the community and now, a significant dealership in the AFGRI Equipment company. The award was accepted by Mrs Lynne Schreurs and family.

Welcome to the February edition of The Boyup Gazette.

It’s that time of year again - the beginning of a new school year, community groups back up and running after the summer break, and of course it’s Country Music Festival time! The people of Boyup Brook welcome all visitors and we hope you enjoy your time in our wonderful community.

Well done to the Boyup Brook Shire Council for a pleasant Australia Day celebration. Personally, I am very honoured to receive the Sports Person of the Year award and I congratulate Anne Ritson on being named Citizen of the Year. It was a moving moment as Graham Aird announced the posthumous Shire President’s Award to Tony Schreurs, and our thoughts are with Lynne and family on receiving this honour.

As you can see, the February calendar is full with a range of events and activities to get involved with. Enjoy the month and enjoy the Festival - may the weather be kind to all this year!

“Plant, Gather, Enjoy!”

Locals to Carry Queen’s Baton

Since its launch from Buckingham Palace on March 17 2017, the Queen’s Baton has travelled through all nations and territories of the Commonwealth, and is now making its way in a relay around Australia on its journey to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.

Boyup Brook has two representatives who have been granted the honour of carrying the baton, after having been nominated for achievements and contributions to their community, representing the spirit of the Commonwealth and inspiring others to be great.

Amy Dyer from Chowerup will be the second baton bearer in the Manjimup leg of the relay on Thursday, February 22 at 5.04pm along Rutherford Street. A community celebration will take place at the Manjimup Timber and Heritage Park from 5:30pm.

As the baton heads to its next stop in Bridgetown on Friday, February 23, Jodi Nield will carry it along Steere Street at 9:26am finishing at the Bridgetown High School. The community celebration for Bridgetown will be at the Memorial Park at 9:56am, before the relay continues to Bunbury.

The Baton carries a message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II that calls the athletes of the Commonwealth to come together in peaceful and friendly competition.


Books Wanted for Stall

This time of year sees the Combined Churches of Boyup Brook begin collecting books again for the Stall to be held in the grounds of the Anglican Church during the Country Music Weekend.

Books may be left at any time in the covered breeze-way at the Baptist Church, 79 Jayes Road. A group of volunteers will sort and price any book donations during the summer period and store them safely in readiness for sale.

Second-hand DVDs may also be donated.

All monies collected are then forwarded to a mutually agreed upon mission or group following the sale.

My Aunt Vera loved her time at the lodge and how welcome she was made to feel by the Boyup Brook Community. Notices are often written in the Gazette thanking the Lodge, Doctors and the medical staff but it is not until you have experienced this help that you can truly understand those words. At a recent Shire Meeting, a book called ‘Birds of The South West’ was presented to Shire President, Mr Graham Aird, in honour of Mrs Hazel Hassett, a long time and loyal serving member of Boyup Brook for over sixty years.

Three members enjoyed our Christmas meeting and welcomed Mrs Colleen Clements to our meeting.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Lions Den on 28 February, all women welcome, any age for 15 to 105. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

With the Christmas school holidays drawing to an end many parents may be feeling exhausted and looking forward to school resuming, while others may be already planning events for the next school holidays. Here at Blackwood Basin Group we are doing just that!

Mark down in your calendars Thursday 26th and Friday 27th April 2018, when a feast of events for the whole family will be held in the beautiful south west at Perup: Nature’s Guesthouse, Tonebridge.

Over the two days, the Blackwood Basin Group (BBG), Maroo Wildlife Refuge and local nature conservation experts will present and guide participants through two fantastic training events on ‘Wildlife Handling, Safety, Transport and First Aid’ and ‘Living with Wildlife’. Whilst the adults are enjoying these training events, children will be learning and making exciting things through nature based activities with the BBG and Maroo’s very own ‘Nature Fairy’.

Night stalks will be held for those participants who wish to stay at Perup: Nature’s Guesthouse’s fantastic accommodation, where guests will get the opportunity to visually encounter a number of the local native residents. Participants will also have plenty of time to stroll through the beautiful bush on one of Perup’s nature bushwalk trails, enjoying the abundance of flora and fauna the south west has to offer. For those who wish to bring their camera to capture the beauty that is Perup, you will not be disappointed.

If you love all that is nature and wish to get the kids outside beyond the four walls then this event is for you, step away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life into this magnificent bush setting, learn from industry experts and let the kids have fun through creative adventure.

Training, activities, meals and accommodation will be provided for this at a subsidised rate thanks to the Blackwood Basin Group, Perup: Nature’s Guesthouse, Maroo Wildlife Refuge and funding from State Natural Resource Management.

Museum News

Hi all, welcome to 2018. May it be a good year for all.

We are working on new displays and improving old. There is always something to do and we would like to offer for you to join the Museum as a Volunteer.

If you are a Friend of Museum, the Museum is in need of some of your time to help maintain the Museum. Please come on down when we are open to help.

Committee meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 3pm and all friends of the museum are welcome to attend.

Our sympathy to Joy Bardoe and family on the loss of Les.

All the best to John Walsh while you are undergoing treatment.

Volunteers are at the Museum on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 3pm and Friday 10am – 5pm and are ready to give you a guided tour for $5 Adult and $3 child under 14 years (CASH ONLY).

Lions Club International Purpose: To provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.

Thank you to all the folk who continue to support the Lions Tip Shop. Without your kind donations, Lions Club Boyup Brook would not be able to continue to sponsor the Sandakan Scholarship.

Our Club was proud to be able to donate $5,000 toward helping the CoMHAT team in Boyup Brook, get started with Mental Health support in the community.

Your pumpkins and sunflowers, and others should be well on the way for the Pumpkin Festival in April. People, please get your booking in for your stall, clean out the unwanted treasures you no longer need, and have some fun on the day. To book a spot please call Mick Burgess on 9765 2252.

Lions had a big clean up at the Lions Park a couple of Sundays ago. 24 hours shared between six of us - pretty good I reckon. We have our second park bench and seat ready to be installed, thanks to the Bendigo Bank giving Boyup Brook Lions a grant.

We urge any person or persons who think they would like to have some fun, cooking sausages and hamburgers, toiling away to raise money for very worthy causes like Stem Cell Eye research, prevention of Diabetes, Education of Cancer and Genome Research, just to name a couple of targets, please come along to the Lions club house on a second or fourth Wednesday of the month, 7pm for 7.30pm meeting.

We welcome new ideas, maybe someone has something new to offer in the way of fundraising, helping the Boyup Brook Community. What would the public of Boyup Brook like their Lions Club to do for the community?

Of course, the Nugget ticket will be drawn on February 10th at the Nannup Lions Club. Good luck to those of you have one or more of the 10,000 tickets printed, but I hope it's me! Sorry.

The holiday ceramic painting was lots of fun, with colourful creations being painted. Even the Mums had fun (with hidden talents for painting discovered). A big thank you to those who attended. The Craft Group hopes to continue it for the next school holidays.

The sea container is now painted apart from the area where the bricks are in the way. It blends in well with the surrounding buildings. The next stage is some vegetation when the weather cools.

NEW TRAINEE FOR CRC

The CRC welcomes Oonagh Fitzgerald as our new Trainee Administration Officer, who will be undertaking a Certificate III in Business.

Current Trainee, Cheyenne Beagley, will complete her Certificate III in Community Services at the end of March.

Since 2007, the CRC has offered seventeen traineeships allowing local employment, as well as on-the-job training for Boyup Brook residents, resulting in a nationally recognised qualification.

KIDS HAVE SOME AUSSIE FUN

With pin the tail on the kangaroo, animal bingo, word puzzles and painting boomerangs, the CRC’s recent Australia Day themed school holiday activity was a big success. The morning finished off with a sausage sizzle and everyone enjoyed themselves.

CRC TO SHOW LA BOHEME

West Australian Opera’s City of Perth Opera in the Park is set to make its highly anticipated return on Saturday 3 February 2018.

Opera in the Park has become a staple event in the WA summer calendar since the first simulcast in 2010, and draws crowds of thousands to Perth’s Supreme Court Gardens and via satellite to the regions. This year is set to be no exception with a production of Puccini’s masterpiece La Bohème.

Through the support of Lotterywest, this unmissable production will be available for simulcast at the Boyup Brook CRC.

Boasting a cast of sublime voices including Western Australia’s very own Paul O’Neill, Taryn Fiebig and Paull-Anthony Keightley; La Bohème is the story of a group of friends and idealists, living freely as they pursue their dreams. At the heart of the story are Rodolfo and Mimi, who fall in love at first sight but their hopeful outlook on life is shattered as they face poverty, illness and loss. Their journey is a poignant reminder that the heart-breaking moments in our lives are what unite us all as humans.

The combination of beautiful melodies and spine-tingling performances set against the picturesque backdrop of Perth’s Supreme Court Gardens, makes City of Perth’s Opera in The Park: La Bohème a must see.

Save our Camp Schools

Many thanks to the hundreds of people who wrote to the Minister for Education (cc’d to me) regarding the announced cuts to education, particularly the School of the Air, residential colleges, programs for the gifted and talented, and school camps.

It has been an outstanding response and the Government backflip shows the power of communities pulling together and fighting for what is right. Whilst the School of the Air has been saved, we still need to fight for the regional school camps—particularly Bridgetown and Pemberton in the Warren-Blackwood.

Not only do these camps provide strong educational outcomes for approximately 1800-2000 students each year, they also create employment and support local businesses through the purchase of food, products and other services.

Hands off Agricultural Trust funds

The McGowan Labor Government is still intent on annually raiding 20 percent of funds from the Agricultural Education Farm Provisions Trust. These funds, generated by the Agricultural Colleges are used to purchase farm machinery, pay for licensing, fencing and other farm developments.

This action will impact the operations of the Denmark Agricultural College and limit support for agricultural education programs at Mt Barker, Manjimup and Margaret River.

Country people have had a partial win, but we need to sustain the pressure to ensure quality educational opportunities remain in our regional areas.

Changes to HACC

A few people have contacted my office concerned about HACC services (Home and Community Care) finishing in mid 2018.

My initial enquiries have assured me there will not be a reduction in services, as home care services are transitioned from State to Federal responsibility. The replacement program will be known as Commonwealth Home Support Program for people over the age of 65 years. Adding to the confusion is the rolling out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which will cater for younger people and those with disabilities.

It is my understanding more information will be provided over the next few months, there will be no change to the level of care provided to existing clients and the State will fill any gaps. I will continue to monitor this issue to ensure our seniors, and those living with a disability, are able to safely and comfortably remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

CoMHAT Update

The Boyup Brook Community Mental Health Action Team (CoMHAT) met in late January to progress its intention to engage a part-time

Mental Health Project Officer. Keep an eye out for updates in future Gazettes or on the CoMHAT Facebook page.

The purpose of the Mental Health Action Team is to develop a community culture that has a proactive approach to mental health. If you would like to support the group in their aims, financial donations are welcome. Contact Renee on 0416 156 404 for more information.

Why not make 2018 the year to join in the fun and you will find yourself under the enchantment and magic of this fabulous WA event that brings music and friendship together under summer skies and star filled nights.

For many, it's warm February days, sitting in the shade of gum trees by the river, surrounded by the buzz of people connected by a love of music. That's the way it is at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival and for 2018 will feature The McClymonts (pictured right), who have long been Australia’s best-loved and most successful country group, with a stunning array of Awards and album sales and the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook is thrilled to be welcoming them back to the stage. 20 hit singles, 2 Gold-Certified albums, 10 Golden Guitars – including 5 for Group or Duo of the Year – and 2 ARIAs for Best Country Album to their credit, along with a US Country Music Association Award for Global Artist of the Year. The trio’s three most recent releases each soared to the No. 1 spot on the Australian Country Albums Charts and broke into Top 10 spots on the ARIA All-genre Albums Charts.

Travis Collins (left) is a triple 'Golden Guitar' award winner who is cementing his footprint in the Australian music scene. He has a growing string of hit albums, #1 songs and awards. He is as well known for his masterful guitar playing and powerhouse vocals as he is for his depth of songwriting and live performances.

Golden Guitar winning Country Music artist Warren H Williams has teamed up with rising star Dani Young (below) for a very special performance on the Friday night only and is one not to be missed. They are clearly a musical match made to be. The duo has been described as a meeting of complimentary opposites with Warren coming from the desert and Young hailing from the city and their differences in age and experience meeting to make a perfect musical match.

The Boyup Brook Country Music Festival is known not only for its amazing headline acts, but also for its incredibly diverse line-up that always has something for everyone. 2018 will deliver an array of local, national and international talent that country music lovers have come to expect. Crowd favourites such as Graham Rodger, Kate Hindle, Donna Lou and the Jay Katz, Codee Lee, Kathy Carver and Desert Mist and Red Ochre will be returning with their authentic country sounds, while well-known interstate names Travis Collins, Luke O’Shea, Simply Bushed, Sandie Dodd, Billy Bridge, Rebecca Lee Nye, Keith Jamieson, Alisha Smith, Benn Gunn Band, the Hussy Hicks and Allan Caswell will cross the borders to grace the stage. We also have Craig Adams from New Zealand and Scott Douglas who was born and raised in the USA, is now an Australian singer-songwriter.

Newcomers Savannah and the Strays are a young 5-piece band from Perth who will be performing a set full of toe-tapping originals off their debut album and a couple of timeless country classics. Ray Ryder from Perth is fast becoming one of Australia’s hot new country artists. Ray is a seasoned professional whose music and merchandise are being snapped up as he tours extensively. The Eastern Line from the Wheatbelt will also be appearing for the first time. Their songs reflect the core values of the people who graft together in that harsh environment.

Numerous events will be held from Wednesday 14th to Sunday 18th February and begins with a light-hearted Welcome event at the Caravan Park and the launch of the Art Awards at the Town Hall. There is a lot of activity on Thursday including Bootscooting workshops at the Flaxill Hall, Gospel Singing at the Anglican Church, and early morning entertainment at the Tennis Club and a diverse line up of local, national and international artists at the Music Park.

There is a variety of artists at the Harvey Dickson Country Music Centre on Friday morning, diverse Workshops at the School and finalists of the West Australian Country Music Awards presented by LiveLighter will be showcased on Friday with 10 categories and $10,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. Winners across all the categories will be announced at the 2018 event.

Saturday is a full on day with the Street Carnival and 12 hours of entertainment at the Music Park. Sunday begins bright and early with a huge line up of local and national Bush Poets. Come along and share breakfast and poetry.

They have each recorded very successful songs. Laureate Storyteller Songwriter Luke O’Shea carries on the ancient tradition of singing up this Incredible country. Greatly inspired by the significant and heartbreaking events of the past and the strong and unique people that live upon this land. Luke O’Shea delivers powerful and poetic songs rich in melody, originality and at times—a twisted sense of humour.

Allan Caswell is one of Australia’s most recorded songwriters with well over 600 of his songs being released around the world by artists of the calibre of Cilla Black, Patti Page, The Irish Rovers, The Living End, Slim Dusty, James Blundell, McAlister Kemp, Graeme Connors, The Deltones, Jade Hurley among dozens of others. “Australian songs about Australia” is how Simply Bushed introduce themselves to a new audience. It is the songwriting of Paul Grierson and Chris Reiger that kick started the growth of Simply Bushed. Paul and Chris will be sharing with audiences during their first visit to Boyup Brook how they have crafted many true stories into award winning songs that are loved by audiences and has elevated them to being one of the leading Australiana acts. Hear the rest of the stories behind their songs and for those who are also writers—maybe some insight into the actual songwriting process.


ART AWARDS AND EXHIBITION

The ninth annual exhibition of the Boyup Brook Art Awards will take place at the Boyup Brook Town Hall on Abel Street and is a wonderful presentation of artworks to suit a variety of tastes.

The event opens on Wednesday, February 14th with the Awards Presentation Night from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Entry is free to participating artists and sponsors, with a charge of $5 per person for the general public, which includes light refreshments.

The Exhibition is then open to all from 10am - 4pm on Thursday and Friday, February 15th and 16th, with the earlier opening time of 9am on Saturday February 17th. Entry is $2 per person for all Exhibition days, and all artwork is for sale. A percentage of art sales supports community arts projects throughout the year.

With support from our generous sponsors, the value of prizes for the Art Awards is in excess of $3,000.

STREET CARNIVAL

It's free, spontaneous, and everybody's welcome to participate!

On Saturday the 17th February, the town centre will be alive with activity. It’s a day of cheerful

entertainment, with a huge line up of attractions planned to keep all ages smiling.

The Lotterywest Street Carnival features an exciting and fresh collection of live music, food, art and entertainment, including Out of the Box Community Events who provide numerous old fashioned games for the kids, The Enchanted Stilt Walkers, are a bubble of friendly personality that will bring a huge smile and much laughter with an array of magnificent handmade costumes. There is Face Painting, Balloon Twisting and a Bouncy Castle to

keep the kiddies entertained.

There are many buskers and entertainment in the mix to add to the atmosphere including Mike Wilkinson, Cowboy Roger Lawson, Red Ochre

and Donna and Jay with Walk Up Artists to name a few.

HOUSEKEEPING

The Music Park is a licensed venue so no BYO alcohol or glass is allowed. No dogs / animals are permitted. Vehicles in the Ute & Truck Muster will be checked on entry and any of these items will be confiscated.

The Music Park is a SMOKE FREE venue. There is a Commonwealth Bank ATM located in the IGA carpark (corner of Forrest and Bridge Street). The Bendigo Bank Agency at the

Community Resource Centre (CRC) 86 Abel Street, open weekdays from 9:30am to 3:30pm. EFTPOS facilities are available in the Hot Country Merchandise tent and at the gate.

Photo ID must be provided on entry and into the bar. We encourage responsible drinking and service of alcohol. If you are a Ute and Truck Muster participant, you are permitted to sleep in the back of your ute or sleeper cab on Saturday night at Music

Park, however no tents will be allowed. Please bring your chair or picnic rug, however these items are not to be left in the Music Park overnight. Please consider the safety and enjoyment of other patrons at the Festival.

TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE

Temporary Road Closures will be in place during the 2018 Festival on Saturday 17th February.

All residents and visitors are to adhere to signage.


BUSH POETS BREAKFAST

Bush Poetry continues to be a major part of the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, with the Sunday morning Bush Poet’s Breakfast being among the biggest and best in Australia.

This year we welcome Ray Essery from NSW and the national Male and Female Bush Poetry Champions, Sue Pearce and Keith Lethbridge.

Keith Lethbridge (Cobber): Bush Poetry, music and walking through all parts of the State have been his favourite hobbies for many years. Family and friends are his spiritual contentment and joy.

Ray Essery: Is without doubt one of the most highly regarded performing Bush Poets in Australia. A member of the highly successful ‘Naked Poets’, Ray can leave his audiences in stiches with hilarious tales that reflect his years as a dairy farmer, Navy man and Sydney pub manager.

Sue Pearce: Has been writing and reciting Bush Poetry professionally since 2011 and has many major awards to her credit including the 2017 National Women’s Title awarded in Toodyay in November. The love of her craft has seen her perform throughout the eastern states of Australia.

UTE AND TRUCK MUSTER

This year the Boyup Brook Ute & Truck Muster turns 15!

Rolling slowly through town on Saturday morning you will see street utes, farm utes and trucks, 4x4 ute and wagons, vintage cars, tractors and trucks. They travel from all over the state and even the eastern states to be a part of this fantastic best in the South West Ute & Truck Muster.

Registrations begin from 8am at the Old Railway Station, with everyone lining up and checking out each other’s pride and joys. They get the finishing touches of flags and one last wipe over before the parade rolls out to horns, music and the unmistakable sound of revving behind the vintage fire truck. The Colonial Clydesdales will be partaking and are one of the last remaining working Clydesdale teams in Western Australia, so please show your support.

After the parade, all the vehicles make their way to the Hockey Oval, right next to the Music Park, for judging, display, lots of fun and games, drinks and great atmosphere with a spectacular stage full of music until 7pm with Hayden McGlinn, Tracey Barnett and The Platinum Project and then head to the main stage for more amazing performances with the McClymonts, Travis Collins, Benn Gunn Band and Ray Ryder.

Lost Boyup Brook

LOST Boyup Brook is a Facebook page engaging current and former residents by sharing memories of days gone by and we welcome your contributions.

When the original power house was built, it was situated behind Graham’s store in Bridge Street, with the entrance opening into Forrest Street. I have no idea when the power house was first supplying power into town, however it must have been long before World War II.

When the Flax Mill came into being in 1942, the power house was upgraded to supply power to the mill. This was war time and as the flax mill was a government funded enterprise producing canvas goods for the war, upgrading the power supply was part of the enterprise.

The town was supplied power from a small generator, which was kept as a standby unit when two larger units were installed. I am not sure of the make, possibly Worsley. They were known as donkey engines; diesel powered, single cylinder, horizontally opposed pistons. The motors were connected to an electric motor with batteries to use as a starter motor. When the motor started, the starter motor cut out and became a generator, producing DC power. The size of the flywheel was about eight feet high and when the fuel was turned off to stop the engine, the flywheel would continue turning for about fifteen minutes.

The personnel who were responsible for the installing of the motors and their maintenance was carried out by various people. The fact that two of the men were dressed in military uniform and drove an army vehicle leads me to believe the military had a big control over the whole operation during the

war years. I recall one of these men was named Doug Carrol, who stayed around until the war ended. Although the power to the town was on the same power supply as the flax mill, a local man named Clarry Kent looked after the town area twenty four seven. The local road board supplied him a vehicle, and eventually another man, Tim Ducey was employed and they shared the load; twelve midday to midnight, then midnight to midday. Various people worked at the power house over years, until the power supply came to town in the early 1950s.

Just a few memories of the town lighting: there were very few street lights and during the war years these had to be shielded so as the lights only shone down. This was because it was feared enemy planes would have less chance of identifying that there was a township below. All street lights were switched off at midnight. Some of the buildings at the flax mill were galvanised roofing and these were blacked over so as not to be seen on a moonlight night.

There is always part of the story missing, I only have what I know first-hand.

They came with Phillips on the First Fleet,

Locked in the hold in leg irons.

The dregs, their spirit beat,

To this land in chains, respect and soul dying.

They came to this harsh distant land,

Wrenched from family and friends.

Minor crimes, punished by the laws hand,

Poverty – the law to this land sends.

They came with no crops stock or hope,

Wave upon wave of those deported.

Men, women and children, meant to cope,

Sentence so big for crimes so minor reported.

Convicts who were punished tamed this place,

Through hunger, deprivation, respectability sought.

They explored the rivers, oceans, desert waste,

Toiling, backbreaking hard through flood and drought.

They opened up the land with wheat and sheep,

Discovering opals, tin, silver and gold.

Our country prospered through their hearts deep,

Fair laws made as the country, like a rose unfold.

From our convict past came a spirit for,

A spirit passed through to our Diggers.

Who fought for freedom on a distant shore,

And returned to build as farmers and riggers.

They came, migrants, seeking peace from other places,

Came to help settle this great country of ours.

Fishermen, farmers, craftsmen with different faces,

Foreign food, culture, contributing, putting in the hours.

Our country grew and prospered – became as one,

Mining, manufacturing and all that we demanded.

Fast cars and fossil fuels, our ozone layer undone,

The family unit, also becoming disbanded.

Mistakes we’ve made, we now try to repair,

With hope and education, we’ll win the race.

Rebates for Western Union Scams

The ACCC’s Scamwatch is urging all Australians who made payments to a scammer via Western Union from 2004 to 2017 to take action by 12 February to claim your money back.

Examples of tricks the scammers used included:

online or internet scams

lottery or prize promotion scams

family emergency scams

advance-fee loan scams

online dating or romance scams.

The scammers would tell victims to send the money through Western Union to claim a prize or help their relative. But the money would go straight to the scammer.

The scam took place between 1 January 2004 to 19 January 2017. If you used Western Union in this 14-year period, you might be able to claim your money back.

To apply for a refund: Fill out the online form at www.westernunionremission.com Or download the claims form and post to ‘United States vs the Western Union Company, PO Box 404028, Louisville, KY 40233-4028’.

Make sure you report you’ve been a victim of this scam to the Australian Government (ACORN).

Opportunity to Join SWDC Board

Members of the local community have the opportunity to provide insight and contribute to the future of the region by being part of the South West Development Commission’s (SWDC) board of management.

The State Government agency, which is responsible for the economic and social development of the region, is calling for applications from people who would like to help steer the direction of the South West through a role on the organisation’s board.

The seven-member body sets policy and makes decisions about a broad range of projects and initiatives involving the Commission.

SWDC acting chief executive officer Rebecca Ball said it was an exciting time to be involved in regional development. “The South West is in the process of being transformed through major projects such as the Transforming Bunbury’s Waterfront initiative and Busselton-Margaret River Airport development,” Ms Ball said. “This is a great time to join the SWDC board and help shape the future of the South West.”

Boyup Brook celebrates Australia Day with the thoughts of how fortunate we are to live in Boyup Brook and Australia.

Shire Councillors, employees, performers and award winners are to be congratulated for making this Day a success.

I came to Australia 68 years ago as a 12 year old with my parents. My mother had been told by doctors that she may not survive another year in the cold, damp and polluted atmosphere of north east England. Australia was good for her and within months she was restored to full health, dying 44 years later at the age of 98. Among many other things, she was ABC Radio broadcaster from the Geraldton station, while my father was a Presbyterian minister in Geraldton.

We need to consider our impact on the First Australians. While I was judging Tidy Towns in Queensland 1988-95, the Mayor of Cloncurry took me to a site north of the town known as Kajabbi. He showed me a cenotaph depicting a site of a massacre caused because about 140 years ago cattle wandered into traditional hunting grounds where any animal was considered food. A cow was speared and the swatter discovered the remains. He contacted Captain Logan who with the combined forces of troopers, squatters and their employees shot and killed 420 Aboriginal persons, but also about 100 whites were killed.

While judging Tidy Schools, I was invited to address the school assembly for their centenary in a western suburb of Brisbane. Children had done their research of events in their district one hundred years ago. One child read an extract from the local newspaper of 100 years ago, the following is not word perfect but reveals the attitude at the time. An Aboriginal came across a steer which had broken its leg, he killed the steer to put it out of its misery and chose not to waste the meat and started to carve it into sizes he could handle and take it back to his community. Captain Logan was advised and he sent his troopers to kill twelve Aborigines.

That was more than a century ago and was not done in “OUR NAME”. It is time to forgive though not forget the impact of the ‘boat people’ as from 1770.

While judging Birdsville in the Tidy Towns Awards, the plane lands on Friday and the next leaves on Monday so the Mayor asked if I would talk to Sunday School children about recycling, anti littering etc. Sunday School rarely had a ‘guest speaker’ and most of the adults were also present, most being Aboriginal. I did not know that I was speaking to the converted because during question time, children told me that they get together to pick up litter and recyclables after the Birdsville Races. The aluminium cans were sent back to Adelaide to collect the deposit refund which in those days was 5 cent a can. It took three years to raise enough money from the 5 cent can refund, blended with other grants to build a much wanted swimming pool in Birdsville. Now this money is donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service which has a base in Birdsville.

I went to a school concert in Birdsville where children performed Yothi Yindi music and dance and I noted the proud look of Aborigine parents as their children performed. Birdsville population is 70-80% Aboriginal and almost all are employed by local pastoralists or the Shire.

Australia Day Thoughts As a matter of interest, the largest organically certified property in the world is near Birdsville. About 30 years ago, David Brook who at that time was Mayor of Diamantina Shire studied the newly released criteria for organic certification and his methods already complied. He sent his daughter to set up an office in China to market organically grown beef abattoired in Queensland and sent frozen to China at premium prices. Neighbouring station owners are now organically certified and supporting the China office. This has been the forerunner of the demand by China to purchase more organic foods from Australia.

My forebears invaded England about 1,000 years ago but most of those descendants from the ancient Britons have either forgotten or don’t care about what happened several centuries ago. The Normans dominated the Britons and the landscape with their castles and cathedrals but I would not choose to revert back to those days.

When former PM Kevin Rudd said ‘SORRY’, I felt that that day (13TH February) could have been an alternative to 26th January. A time to reassess the rights and lifestyle of ALL AUSTRALIANS.

I am proud to be Australian.

In order to change your life, you must first change your thinking. And that’s not easy when you’ve spent your life thinking a certain way.

Minister and columnist Dr Frank Crane said, ‘Our best friends and our worst enemies are our thoughts.’ King Solomon put it this way: ‘As [someone] thinks within himself, so he is.’ (Proverbs 23:7)

To change your thinking, you must do it—one thought at a time. That calls for discipline and determination. But it’s worth it.

If you wanted to compete in a marathon you wouldn’t go on an all-sugar diet, would you? The fuel you put into something determines its performance. Yet we disregard this basic piece of wisdom: what you feed everything else is nothing compared to what you feed your mind!

Here’s a truth that will transform you: think excellent thoughts! What enters your mind repeatedly, occupies it, shapes it, controls it and in the end expresses itself in what you do and who you become. Your mind will absorb and reflect whatever it’s exposed to. The events you attend, the relationships you build, the materials you read or don’t read, the music you listen to, the media images you’re exposed to, the conversations you engage in, and the thoughts you entertain all shape your mind, and eventually your character and your destiny.

Nominations Open for WA Women’s Hall of Fame

The centenary of International Women’s Day in 2011, was celebrated in Western Australia with the launch of the WA Women’s Hall of Fame.

Seven years later, this annual event has become the most prestigious recognition program for women in this State with 164 WA women having been acknowledged by induction to our Hall of Fame.

Throughout our history, and our State, Western Australian women have left their mark in communities through business; growing industries, leading movements, mentoring, building communities, fund-raising, working in science and research, the arts, child-care and volunteering, providing positive role-models and encouragement to the young women of our future.

Together with support from Lotterywest and the Department of Local Government and Communities, ISHAR Multicultural Women’s Health Centre proudly hosts this year’s WA Women’s Hall of Fame.

The WA Women’s Hall of Fame provides the opportunity for women from all walks of life, from all regions in this State, and from a myriad of diverse cultural backgrounds to be recognised for their achievements and the difference they have made to the lives of other Western Australians.

This year the host organisation is encouraging nominations for women from Indigenous, CaLD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse), remote and rural backgrounds who are often underrepresented in the nomination process. It may be a relative, a colleague, a friend, a neighbour, or simply some-one they admire.

The 2018 Inductees will be announced on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2018.

The Christmas Break meant most bowlers had some time off and just social bowls continued during that time.

Mixed Triples On Thursday 11 January, it was a full day of bowls with the Mixed Triples being played. This event is sponsored by William Barrett and Sons of Bunbury. The event was organised by the ladies match committee and the Ladies Captain kept us on the move with only short breaks between games so that we finished the event in one day. The winning team was Vivienne Lee Steere, Neville Parker and Beryl Bowron with the runner-up team being Margaret Nix, Wilfred Lee Steere and Julie Fallon.

Men’s ILRR Fours On the weekend of 13 and 14 January, the men’s Interleague Round Robin was held at the Halls Head Bowling Club in Mandurah. Barry Uren and Steve Thompson played in the Blackwood League team, and Ken Ritson attended in an official capacity. Despite the hot weather, there was plenty of good bowls played.

Men’s Pennants Saturday 6 January proved a very good day, with Boyup Brook winning the full six points in a home game against Manjimup Green. Their next game is another home game on Saturday 20 against Donnybrook Blue.

Ladies Pennants Unfortunately the game on Tuesday 16 January had to be cancelled due to weather which was affected by the cyclone moving south and causing quite a bit of rain. We only have three more games until the end of the season.

Locals Inspired by Kookaburras

It may not quite be hockey season, but a number of local hockey fans travelled to Narrogin on January 27 to watch an international match between the Australian and Dutch national men’s teams.

The speed and skills of the players was inspiring and with a 3-3 result, there were no bragging rights to be had by either Aussie or Dutch fans, much to the disappointment of the Mel family!

The Tennis Club saw out 2017 with a New Years Eve party which was well attended by tennis and community members. The committee did a fantastic job in preparing for the night with a barbeque and bar, amazing decorations, dancing to DJ Razza, movies for the kids and of course, plenty of tennis - even at midnight under the hired lights.

January is an exciting month for tennis fans with the Hopman Cup, the lead up events to the Australian Open and the Grand Slam event itself. A number of members took the opportunity to watch the Hopman Cup in Perth and were suitably inspired.

With so much tennis to spectate on the television, there are definitely some new shots played and calls for ‘hawk-eye’ made at social tennis in the weeks following.

To add some interest to the Australian Open, members were randomly drawn players to follow. Congratulations to Isabella Twigg who was drawn women's Champion, Caroline Wozniacki, and Jodi Nield who received Roger Federer in the draw.

Boyup Brook also held its own Hopman Cup style event with seven countries represented. It was a close finish, decided by a tie break between Rachael and Rance from France, and Carmel and John S representing the USA, with the Americans taking the title.

Mayanup Pony Club Moments

January saw the return of former member and coach Rosemary Inglis to Mayanup Horse and Pony Club (MH&PC). Despite heat and impending cyclonic conditions, a very successful 2.5 day clinic was held.

Riders from as far as Manjimup, Bunbury and Allanson started their lessons at 6:30am and concluded at dusk. Making use of the grounds cross country course, show jumping and dressage facilities.

Rosemary skilfully imparted her wisdom and knowledge to the riders, who learned a great deal and finished with smiles on their faces.

Mayanup Horse and Pony Club looks forward to welcoming Rosemary back in the April school holidays.

2018 sees the introduction of the new constitution, which will allow an adult riding membership at club level to Pony Club Western Australia. MH&PC look forward to offering this new membership category. For further enquiries, please visit our Facebook page or contact Veronica Nix on 0409 684 083.
