Communication is important for dance success by Matt Mernagh
Understanding the wildly unpredictable dance scene involves having a good ear and network of DJs,
known as DJ Pools providing a buzz about the hottest songs. Advance planning is important in
ensuring that retailers and record labels are on the
same track when it comes to marketing and racking products.
Dance has been fused with so many other genres that it can be difficult to truly define what it
is. Example; pop is represented on the dance chart with artists like Interscope's Will Smith and
Maverick's Madonna. Arista's hip -hop act Naughty By Nature are charting on dance. Universal's director of A&R Dennis Garces has been involved with dance
music since the start of the decade, he explains, "The line has definitely been blurred with the evolution
of pop music becoming very danceable. It has come down to, if it makes your body move and you can hear it in a club than it's dance music. It can be all
encompassing or very narrow."
From a retailer's perspective dance isn't a narrow market, representing approximately 20 to 30
per cent of their sales depending on the release schedule. The fast week of release is the most critical
as the club goers mentality is to purchase the album
as soon as it's available. This can create unforeseeable demand for an album if retailers and
the record company are caught off guard. Garces says, "The beauty and excitement is the
unpredictable nature of the dance genre. There are lots of stable producers who over the last few years
created some great records. Then there are producers who seem to come from out of nowhere."
To avoid having a hot new album catch the industry by surprise, people like Garces, BMG

buyers at superstores all rely on their own networks of information and plenty of advance planning.
HMV's director of purchasing Sue Duck explains,"You can't miss the opportunity. Lots of
our store managers are experienced with the club
scene. We rely on our Yonge Street store and Montreal and Edmonton superstores where they
have designated dance buyers. They have established relationships with clubs in their area." Staying at the club level to hear what a DJ is
spinning is critical to remaining knowledgeable of the scene. "In a four hour set a DJ may play 100
songs," says Gelfant on the importance of going to clubs. This sentiment is also echoed by Garces. "The
only way to be on top of it is to be out there. Listen to the what the DJs are playing. Keeping abreast of

CCMA nominations and Top 10 single for Shirley Myers Shirley Myers is looking forward with much greater
anticipation to this year's CCMA Awards, where she has been nominated for a Wrangler Award and where her current single, Forever In Love, a duet with
Duane Steele, earned the nomination nod in the vocal/instrumental collaboration category.
Dogged determination to carve a niche for herself in country music, and a talent that has created
a loyal fan base, has brought Myers closer to the winner's circle.
It all began in 1988 when the Moncton native
won the Budweiser Talent Search during Canadian Country Music Week
... an indicator of what was to
come. With guidance from fellow New Brunswicker, manager Peter Leggett, who launched a subtle
promotion campaign with the release of Myers' first single, the pattern of recognition began to take shape
in both Canada and in Nashville where Leggett has his base of operations. He teamed her up with some of the big names in country, opening for such
headliners as John Michael Montgomery, Tracy Lawrence and Tern Clark among others. The campaign began to work, resulting in
Myers gaining a Top 5 single with Let It Rain, the title track of her debut album, which was also
included on Warner Music's New Country 4 compilation. That album was certified platinum.
The year 1997 was perhaps the biggest year
for Myers. Besides the success of Let It Rain, the 5th most spun single of the year, she scored a Top 10 hit with Haven't You Heard and the East Coast
Music Awards became another important door opener for her. The next year she was nominated for
a Juno Award and a Big Country Award as female country artist of the year and CCMA independent
citation nominations for independent female vocalist, independent single and song for Haven't
You Heard, which she wrote with Richard Scott and Rod Nicholson.
Earlier this year, Myers was nominated for a Big Country Award as female artist of the year, an
important lead-in to her CCMA nominations for the Wrangler and vocal/instrumental collaboration
awards. With the release of There Will Come A Day,
Myers entered into yet another stage in her career. Acclaimed rock producer Keith Olsen, who has
worked with Fleetwood Mac, Santana, Foreigner, Whitesnake and the Grateful Dead, wanted to work
with Myers. With the release and the immediate impact of Forever In Love, Olsen as the producer
was obviously the right choice. Leggett and Myers are now in pre -production structuring a French -language album that will
include a few surprises. One will most certainly have to be Myers' duet with her father Gerry, on The
French Song, a track on her English -language album.
Warner Music Canada's senior vice-president and managing director/ domestic and internal division Dave Tollington and president Garry Newman presented Cher with a five times platinum award for Believe.
booked by Core Audience Entertainment for the 6,000 winners of their Blueline contest.
During the summer the brewery has packaged cellphones and pagers in sixpacks and 24s of their
product as part of their brand vision, said Labatt Blueline project team employee John Verndon.
Their branding goal is to have consumers associate spontaneity with their products. This was
accomplished by the brewery phoning and paging winners to provide details for the hush-hush event.
The first phone call informed them to the keep the date free and then on Friday, Aug. 6 all
information was provided. In future, Verndon says, "As people get accustomed to how the promotion
works there will be less notification." The brewery wanted a big name act to lead off
their first of four events and settled on the Red Hot Chili Peppers after attempts to have the Tea Party
failed. Pepsi had already signed EMI's Tea Party to
perform at their sponsored events and Labatt didn't want a conflict. "We wanted a Canadian act but it
didn't work out. There will be a Canadian band for the grand finale," Verndon said.
Thankfully rain forecasted for the night held off, but some tense moments were created during
sound check as the wind was whipping rain onto the covered stage.
It should also be noted the band performed fully clothed, including bass player Flea who is known
for performing in his underwear or naked. MuchMusic was also on hand to tape the event
and the band has granted Labatt permission to use the footage and their new song Scar Tissue for "back
selling commercials."

with Elvira CapreeseThe race for newer talent!!! Talk about heretoday and gone today, some industry pundits, thosewho still possess ethics, are hinting at a musicindustry Armageddon. Some of their counterpartshave mounted signing sprees, looking for those drop -dead gorgeous people, male and female, withpassable talent. The kudos and loyalties wane whenthere's no airplay and no sales, and it's on to thenext one. Contracts are being signed to suit thefinders, but expect to see some legal action hereshortly. The fan base doesn't seem to matteranymore. If there isn't an immediate impact at radioand/or retail, the finder searches out newer talentand the circle just gets bigger and bigger. It used tobe, if a record company had one hit in 25, the payoutstabilized the operation and even made money. Butthat didn't deter the promotion efforts to make hitsout of the other 24. (EC: And we haven't even gotour feet wet with Internet downloading! !!)
Downloading??? According to a recent report inan electonics magazine, there were 17 million MP3files downloaded each day from the Internet, whichwould total close to three billion for the first half ofthis year. That's a lot of downloading of titles, considering there were only 846 million CDs soldlast year, which figuratively speaking, is a lot of CDs,and, of course we're talking US figures. If thesenumbers are correct, we have a problem NOW, notin five or ten years as some were predicting. (EC:You're lending yourself to the media frenzy!!!)

Fax redundant already??? I've hardly gottenover the shock of the demise of the telex andmastered the fax machine when I was told to checkmy email for any future reports, invitations et cetera,et cetera. Fax is out. What's next? (EC: Just think ofthe cost factor when it comes to paper!! !)
Got a minute??? Here's a story that reportedlyappeared in a highly -respected west coast daily. Thenames have been removed for obvious reasons. "Inretrospect, lighting the match was my big mistake. Iwas only trying to retrieve the gerbil," a man toldthe doctors in the severe burns unit in a city hospital. The man and his homosexual partner had beenadmitted for emergency treatment after a felchingsession had gone seriously wrong. "I pushed thecardboard tube up his rectum and slipped Ragget, our geribal, in," he explained. "As usual, Keekee(the man at the other end of the cardboard tube),shouted out armageddon' , which meant he had hadenough. I tried to retrieve Ragget, but he wouldn'tcome out again, so I peered into the tube and strucka match thinking the light might attract him." At apress conference, a hospital spokesman describedwhat happened next. "The match ignited a pocketof intestinal gas and flames shot out the tube ignitinghis friend's hair and severely burning his face. Italso set fire to the gerbil's fur and whiskers whichin turn ignited a larger pocket of gas further up theintestine, propelling the rodent out like a cannonball. The man who lit the match suffered second degreeburns and a broken nose from the impact of thegerbil, while his friend suffered first and seconddegree burns to his anus and lower intestinal track.(EC: Have a nice day! !)
The culture binder!!! I remember a few yearsago when Dick Nolan released Aunt Martha's Sheep,a single that a lot of people west of Restigouche,
after a 10 year runthe show down to its final curtain.
Finally the production will come to a close aftera record -breaking and historically longest run andmost profitable musical theatre production in thehistory of theatre in Toronto and Canada.
Homage was paid to Drabinsky quietly throughoutthe evening as his name came up often inconversation. Included were references to the factthat he would have loved to have been there.Strangely enough a great number of Drabinsky'scritics were suddenly made aware of the enormouscontributiuon this man had made to theatre and toCanada and the world through his short butphenomenal leadership that made Canada animportant part of world theatre culture.
Suddenly Drabinsky wasn't such a bad guy -- andthere continues to be doubts that many of theunproven charges against him and his partner MyronGottlieb -- might yet turn out to be unfounded. Andwhat a sad day that would be because Canada'semerging success in theatre production was so shortlived.
This was the buzz at the Phantom's post -partyheld at the Eaton Centre's City Grill. With all theglitter of an opening night, waiters dashed aroundserving delicacies and drinks into the wee hours ofthe night. All that was missing was the presence ofGarth Drabinsky.
"Garth deserved to be here, and he also deservedsome credit for Fosse at the Tony Awards" said oneof the attendees. After all none of the charges haveyet to be proven.
scoffed at. The single went on to sell more than100,000 copies. What we might call left -fielders arecontinually happening in the Atlantic provinces. It'sa hotbed for retaining the local culture ... and whatbetter way than through music? Anyway, A. FrankWillis, a legend in the east particularly on the Rockwhere they refer to him as "a sure-footed Newfie,"has a single that's catching fire east of Acadie-Bathurst. It's titled The Savage Cop in Savage Coveand Frank has one of those born-again baritonevocals that freezes most easterners in their tracks. With a couple or three hundred thousand ex-Newfielanders stretched across the country and evenmore from the other Atlantic provinces, the song isguaranteed to light up the switchboard particularlyduring morning drive. (EC: There's a certain charmto Aunt Martha's Sheep and Savage Cove, don't youthink???)
About the Guess Who!!! If they ever get together, and it's highly doubtful, it would be a very shortmarriage. They aren't the four guys who started outthose many years ago. They live very independentlives and, for the most part are financiallycomfortable. There's only one who seems to wantthe star treatment again, and the other three couldcare less. Remind me to tell you how the Guess Whowas named! (EC: And I'll bet you have a witnesswho can attest to the story!!!)
What contract??? Hey! When the guys on theHill say jump, the question is how high? As forgetting favours from those same guys on the Hill, the carrot comes into play. Watch for the Canadiansunset to do just that on HS. (EC: That's showbiz! !!)

A singing Natalie MacMaster opens more doors by Matt Mernagh
With four albums behind her, Natalie MacMasterhas reached a point in her career where she is
comfortable singing a tune. For her fifth album, the Cape Breton native, known for her beautiful fiddle
instrumentals, sings the title track, In My Hands, which has Warner Music Canada very enthusiastic about its potential to reach a wider audience.
In the past the label hasn't been able to market the two-time gold record artist's instrumentals to
commercial radio. With this song the opportunity has presented itself. "I haven't been able to tap into
that market previously because I've been an instrumental artist. It's more of a vocal track than
me singing. In My Hands has been accepted at radio stations, which is a totally new thing for me. I really
have nothing to lose with it as I've never been in that area before," explains MacMasteron the phone
from a stop on her four date US west coast tour. Performing 250 shows a year has made her
confident to set new goals and attempt innovative ideas. "It wasn't so much a decision, but natural
growth. I didn't know what the final product would sound like. I didn't know how marketable it would
be. With my vocal track there is potential to cross over to markets I haven't even considered before. It was the music and not a conscious effort to have it
fit in." Record executives were caught by surprise with
the vocal track as they hadn't suggested she should become more marketable. But they did play a role
in its creation. By allowing MacMastertime to
develop as an artist, Warner has been rewarded for their patience with an album that could garner a
wider audience. "They've totally given me free reign. They never dictated anything that they wanted me
to be or do. Before this album I put out My Roots Are Showing which was totally traditional and that was great for them too. This time I've given them much more to work with
because it's not a traditional album." To deliver her most commercial album
to a wider audience, MacMasteris granting
a number of interviews while the label develops advertising for the new markets.
Single and only 27 years -old, she wants to establish herself now while she can devote
much of her life to music. "I think hopefully this will put me up another notch. That's not
to ignore everything I have done previously. I couldn't have made an album like this four
years ago. I wouldn't have been able to pull it off. Everything up till now is a movement
towards this." Maintaining a balance between
traditional and new music has ensured fans, who love her past albums, aren't turned off
by this one. The only difference between albums she said is, "It's a much more mature album, more contemporary. It's still me even though it's got some fresh new stuff on it.
It's still very much Natalie's music. It has a bigger variety of music on it." It should be noted that the wide
assortment of songs compliment one another
RPM - Monday August 16, 1999 - 5
perfectly. "The music that is with the tunes is totally appropriate. It's not like we're trying to fit them into
a certain slot. There is one tune that I did, Flamenco Fling, that has a very flamenco feel to it. I wanted
something on the album that has that sort of feel to it."
DANCE continued from page 3
what is happening on the international front...networking for the best sources of information
to see what is happening and what is going to happen."
Taking the club buzz on a song to retail requires planning and informing retailers of the strategies to
keep the hype going. Duck said, "The supplier has to tell the retailer their plan for this record. If they
are serious about it they'll plan it well in advance. So all the tools are in place when it comes time for us to buy it. We need the supplier to hype us. Maybe it is a listening session where you can hear or meet
the artist." Dance music is marketed quite differently than
traditional forms of pop and rock. The approximately twenty DJ pools in the country play a vital role, but
vinyl and the CD single are also key components.
Record labels service the DJ pools with mostly vinyl pressings of a song as it is still their preferred
method of playing music. Gelfant says, "In Canada the DJ pool system is the backbone of our scene. It's very unique to Canada. Vinyl is the preferred tool as the DJ uses it for mixing."
Formed during the disco days of the '70s the pools are always seeking the next big song and
provide positive and negative feedback to their label reps. "Part of the whole DJ mentality is having it first and breaking it. That is the trade-off. We provide
record pools with material and they provide the feedback," Garces said. Plenty of pride exists in DJ pools that want to
assist in helping break the next big act. While dance music is a global phenomenon, Canadian DJs will
get behind Canuck DJs who are creating a cool sound. Gelfant remarked, "There is pride in the DJs when it comes to a good Canadian record." BMG
is home to Canada's star DJ Chris Sheppard along with being the top dance label in the country for the last seven years.
The other difference in dance music is the strength of singles. Club kids hear a song that they
have to have now won't wait for the full length release that can come months after the song has been played at the clubs. Singles have proven to be very
popular in keeping their interest and allows retailers to gauge how big an album will be.
"CD singles make a huge difference on dance stuff. BMG set the Britney Spears record up really well. The CD single came out a month and half
before the album. By the time it came for us to book the album there was such a buzz on her that
everybody knew it was going to be big," Duck continued, "A CD single can establish what could
be the next Britney Spears. People want to have that song before the album comes out."
The Loggerhead team celebrated their recent signing of Ashley Maclsaac to the label atThe Docks. His first album is due to be released
some time in November.

BATTERSHELL -PopLuv PunksKoch International Canada 30004-2With a name like Battershell one might expectto have to brace themselves for an onslaughtof harsh punked up sounds, but that isn't thecase. This New York City three piece (TammyLynn guitar/vocals, Hannah Head bass/backing vocals, and Charlie Lauth drums) aremore akin to trippy pop melodies than threechord punk noise. With their sound based in abizarre fantasy world where energetic guitars, quick drumming and hushed vocals reignsupreme. In fact, the start of the album has acircus funhouse theme inviting the listener intotheir world of Dizzy the tattooed dog and"Circus Tragedy:' The later truly highlights thebands uniqueness with its blend of pop andoff the wall lyrics. A true gem. Covering BillyIdol's White Wedding is like having the originalplayed at the wrong speed and without thesneer. Light speed fast, the song ends a littleover the two minute mark while keeping theirtrademark melodic pop sound. Their constanttouring has generated a positive buzz aboutthem and a loyal following that the band havetermed Luv Punks. As a form of tribute to theirfans they used this name for their full lengthdebut. -MM
ALISON KRAUSS - Country/PopForget About ItRounder/Universal-11661-0464-JKrauss is one of those legitimate unforgettableentertainers. Her change in direction has beensubtle over her past eight releases, beginningwith Too Late To Cry in 1987. That signaturevocal is non -assuming, sans Union Station, although the core members are there; BarryBales, Ron Block, Jerry Douglas and DanTyminski. Krauss, who produced the album,
has also added Matt Rollins on keys, guitaristsPat Bergeson and Viktor Krauss, along withvocalists Suzanne, Sidney and Evelyn Cox (ofthe Cox Family) a perfectionist on the mandolinSam Bush and drummer Jim Keltner, a prettysolid backup for her never weary and alwayswarm vocalizing. Song material has alwaysbeen important to Krauss and here she'scertainly searched out some pretty big hitters, like Robert Lee Castleman, who penned thetitle track which is the first single; MichaelMcDonald's Empty Hearts and It Don't MatterNow and an incredible take on Dreaming MyDreams With You, a country waltz written by
Allen Reynolds with harmony vocals by LyleLovett, Dolly Parton, beautifully fused with adobro solo by Jerry Douglas. Released as asingle, this would be, as they say in countrycircles, "a barnburner." -WG
RUNAWAY BRIDEVarious ArtistsColumbia 69923-HRecord companies have sure changed theirtune about soundtracks from previous years. Here's another sure seller with two country hitsalready crashing the charts; Martina McBride'sI Love You and Ready To Run by the DixieChicks and waiting in the pop wings, EricClapton's Blue Eyes Blue, from one of today'sleading tunesmiths Diane Warren, ShawnColvin's Never Saw Blue Like That, MarcAnthony with his excellent Latin influence onYou Sang To Me, Daryl Hall and John Oates, reuniting to sing And That's What Hurts and,get this, Billy Joel, who not very often doesmusic for films, singing Where Were You (OnOur Wedding Day), written by Lloyd Price. Thefilm is at movie houses now and the soundtrackis already turning heads at retail. Oh yes! Don'toverlook U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'mLooking For. Pretty ingenious programming byproducers Glen Brunman, John Klodner andKathy Nelson. -WG

SUSAN CROWE - Roots/TraditionalA Pilgrim's MirrorCorvus-005An artist vis-a-vis performer creates for the self, not necessarily an audience. As a composerMiss Crowe is evidently an artist. Her songsare at least sophomorically literate but notnotably melodic and there's a certainrepetitiveness about them that crowds theborder of ennui for the listener. Honestly andas kindly as possible, we suggest that she'sbetter as a wordsmith than a song composer. As a singer however, she could well achievestardom if that's her wish. Her voice remindsone muchly of Evelyn McGregor, being fullbodied and warm. We'd like to hear more of
her, perhaps singing the songs of Ca rieJacobs Bond. 100% MAPL. Produced by RoyForbes and recorded at Vancouver'sMushroom Studios. -BW
EUROPEAN BROADCASTING - JazzUNION JAZZ ORCHESTRA100Years of Duke EllingtonJustin Time -8476Here are live recordings of concerts held inMontreal on April 29th and 30th of this year. The album begins auspiciously with a thirtyplus minute medley of pop songs associatedwith Duke Ellington. It works but only becausethe songs themselves are so good. Theorchestra is skilled but it simply doesn't evokeEllington. Perhaps no orchestra can andperhaps it's unfair to suggest that any shouldtry. Whatever, it's downhill after the first trackas the orchestra essays some of the Duke'smore exotic compositions such as The TogoBrava Suite which sound cacophonous asplayed here. Perhaps that was Ellington's

intention but we rather much doubt it. Not abad album one supposes and certainly worthyof custom for its intention but in the end itdoesn't do much for the memory of the mansaluted. -BW
TAYLOR/GRISMAN - JazzACOUSTIC JAZZ QUARTETI'm Beginning To SeeThe LightAcoustic Disc -36The mandolin is often considered, and toooften dismissed as, only a country musicinstrument. In the hands of a skilled playerhowever, it's at home with any kind of music.David Grisman is such a player. Here, he joinsMartin Taylor (guitar), Jim Kerwin (bass) andGeorge Marsh (drums) in a tasty programmeof quietly acoustic, almost cocktail, jazz. Heplays his mandolin the way Art Tatum playedpiano, with tricky runs scampering around, butalways returning to, the melody laid down byhis fellow artists. The baker's dozen tracks areall beloved standards including East of TheSun (our favourite), Autumn Leaves andAutumn in NewYork. At the conclusion of track12 there's the usual expected silent run downpreparatory to switching off power but the rundown isn't completed until you hear anunnumbered, unlisted and possibly ad libversion of If I Had You. A baker's dozen ofdelights on a great album. -BW
MAD PUDDING - EclecticismGrand HotelSliced Bread -71190Despite the title this isn't a concept album. Infact, it's difficult to say just what it is other thanenjoyable. On the 13 tracks one can hearcontemporary, celtic and even musette soundsamong others. Migawd, there's even a take onAaron Copland's Hoedown that one finds more
pleasing than the symphonic version. Onecould wish however, for better titles than suchas Reel di Janiero and Celtic Funk Stew. Thecuts are all fine but titles like those are just toocutesy for words and possibly offputting forcasual rack perusers. Pity. -BW
CLIFTON CHENIER - ZydecoSqueezebox BoogieJustinTime/Just A Memory -9141The self proclaimed King of Zydeco (heperformed wearing a crown) died in 1987 atage 62. In August of 1978 he appeared atMontreal's Rising Sun Club where this livealbum was recorded. The audience wasenthusiastic as was what was principally aperforming band. Zydeco is sometimesdescribed as a fusion of Cajun, blues, R&Band R'n'R. Whether it's a true fusion ormongrelization is for each listener to decide. The important thing is that it's fun music andClifton Chenier presented it better than anyoneever has or is ever likely to. -BW

ALBUM PICKKIM RICHEYGlimmerMercury -314-538-888-JThe country vocal warmth is still there, but there's an instantly recognizable soul diversionthat brings Richey the songwriter into a sort of creative rebound. She's had chart actionbefore, but there was that old "bridesmaid"situation. Richey wrote songs others loved tocover, and a few did pretty well, includingTrishaYearwood and Radney Foster. But hereRichey is making her own vocal statement, and she's doing it first in pop circles with ComeAround, a song she wrote with Tim Krekel andwhich is featured in the film For The Love OfThe Game. The charitable Richey gives usan excellent sampling of her vocal and writingtalent with 14 tracks. Her solo -penning of HelloOld Friend, should be a single, the next single. Also in that singles category are So It Goeswhich she wrote with Bill Deasy and StrengthIn You where she shares writing credits withDave Bassett and Samantha Brown. Checkout the instrumental backing, very memorable, as are the background vocalists ChrisBraide, Pete and Sam Brown. Interesting too is that the album was produced at studiosin London, England and New York. Hugh Padgham produded. -WG

The Wilkinsons have two Country Music Awardnominations, not one as reported last week. GerryRenewych, who heads up Golden Phoenix Music, sets us straight. The Wilkinsons have beennominated in the best vocal group category, competing with the Dixie Chicks, Alabama,Diomond Rio and Lonestar. They have also beennominated for a horizon award. Back home in
COUNTRYCanada, the Giant recording family trio have beennominated for Canadian Country Music Awards insix categories; group, single, video and SOCANsong of the year for 26 Cents, album for NothingBut Love and the Wrangler rising star award. In the
meantime, The Yodelin' Blues, shipped to UScountry radio stations a couple of weeks ago, islooking good on the US trade charts. The title trackof their album, Nothing But Love, written by SteveWilkinson and Nashville writer Gary Burr, is thefollow-up in Canada to Boy Oh Boy, nowdescending the chart (#82) after 19 weeks. The newsingle qualifies as two -parts Cancon.
Thomas Wade flying solo with new projectThomas Wade made a sudden change in his careerwhich immediately impacted with the release of hisnew single Running Away With You.
The interest factor alone among the manycountry radio programmers who have recognizedWade's talent is the fact he is now on a solo venture.Wade without Wayward is still a little difficult toenvision, but Wade has radio support and a bulletingsingle up the RPM Country 100 to prove to himselfat least, that he made the right move.
Wade has gone through a few mentionable andunmentionable experiences over the last little while. One of the mentionable was a throat problem thateventually required surgery. He believed he wouldnever sing again. "I could hardly talk. It basicallyclimaxed when we performed on the CCMA's showin 1997. The producer of the show heard me singduring the first rehearsal and he said he was kind ofconcerned about it. At the pre -show rehearsal hesuggested I lip -sync. I refused ... went back to myroom and quietly and diligently worked to have avoice and went on the show ... and I had a voice, butit sure wasn't great. It was very frightening. Thesurgery was successful and I learned a lot, what notto do and what to do. It was real scary. It's taken mea long time to get back on track."
The other, which borders on the unmentionable, but nevertheless is a factor in what Wade is doingtoday, was his marriage breakup which created a verylow point in his life at a time when he was attemptingto build a career. "I wrote my way through it andthere were some pretty strong influences. I guess itwas something like a gift though, because thosesongs just kept coming. It was during that period
when he met Naoise Sheridan which developed intoa successful co -writing venture. He has also teamedup with writers Tim Taylor and Randy J. Martin.
Writing, as with a lot of artists, is veryimportant, although Wade finds co -writing to be thebetter way to go. "I used to solo write, but with co -writing, I think you get hooked on it. As a solo writer, you're co -writing with yourself and it takes a lotlonger. Some of the co -writes, mine in particular, almost feel like solo -writes. There's such anemotional input they really just come out. But nowI need to have that person there."
He does admit however that the new record is"way less depressing than the last one. The test reallyis rather than write things that are clever, if it'ssomething that happens to you and you can relate toit, do it. No matter what your walk of life is, everyonehas the same things going on in their lives.Songwriting is like group therapy"
He's even going further in experimenting withhis turnaround. He's considering calling hisupcoming CD Lucky 13. "I started out to make a10 -song CD and realized I wanted an 11 -song CDand remembered I had a couple of other songs that Iwanted on it. I then came up with a 13 -song CD andfigured that was enough. I don't want to overdo it.It's still up in the air. I don't want it to be a cocky -sounding title."
Wade is self -producing his new CD at JimHopson's studio, Cradle To Rave in Oshawa,Ontario. He got to know Hopson a few years agowhen he was asked to do a commercial for theOshawa Corral. "We worked together on a few moresmall projects and he told me he was going to build

"I needed someone to manage my affairs. Ineeded a manager, because everyone gets the cardtheir dealt. There's no business -guy card in my deck.I needed somebody who thinks that way ... dealingwith songwriting and the structure of other

productions."Wade explains that "Running Away With You
is the band I play with now." They are Kenny Poston drums, Steve O'Connor on keyboards, bassistAndrew Affleck, Dougie Johnson on steel, DonnyReed on fiddle and Wade on guitars.
In explaining why and how he went solo, Wadesays "It just sort of happened. We weren't playingor touring that much, and if you're not busy or havea lot of irons in the fire, it's very difficult in thisbusiness. So, first one and then another decided togo into other lines of work and it just happened. Iwas on my own."
Wade has also been using Jason Berry onguitars, making the band a six -piece. "The musicfor the new record really requires an extra piece. There's a lot more acoustic stuff on this record."
Even as Thomas Wade & Wayward, Wade hadbeen experimenting with different musical avenuesbeing hooked up with Wayward and with Amy Sky."I would go on tour across the country withWayward, and then I would hop a plane, meet upwith Amy and come back the other way. With Amy,we were opening for Roch Voisine. It was a three-piece. I was playing acoustic, there was a piano andsometimes another guitar player. It was fairlycomplicated, but it was up my alley and I starteddeveloping the acoustic feel again. With Wayward,we had a bigger band sound."
Wade admits to being country from thebeginning. "I was born and raised as country as youcan get. By the time I reached 14, I was all over themap, rock, country, pop and even considered goinginto R&B, but decided it was country for me."
It's not exactly back to the future for ThomasWade, but with his life sort of sorted out and with anew collection of supporters and a new full-length,13 -song record release on the horizon, the future isdefinitely his to make.
