New English/Language Arts Teacher Kaitlin King Hello! I would just like to introduce myself to those who don’t know me. My name is Ms. King! This year, I am teaching 11th and 12th grade English, AP Literature, and French at Red Lodge High School. I graduated from the University of
Montana with a degree in secondary English education (Go Griz!). After graduating, I had the privilege of teaching in Kemmerer, Wyoming for two years. While in Kemmerer, I taught a wide range of courses including, sophomore and junior English, creative writing, silver screen, and reading strategies.
This past year, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to serve as a language assistant in Burgundy, France. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to teach English as a second language to French high school students. While garnering strategies and methods to teach English as a second language, I also learned a lot about French culture. This experience not only allowed me to improve my French to the point of proficiency, but it also reinforced my belief that using best practices while teaching is the best way to be an effective educator.
I am more than thrilled to be a part of the Red Lodge School District, and I cannot wait to continue working with the awesome youth in this community, as well as continue growing as a person and educator, here in this beautiful city.

October was a busy for the Green Team. On October 1st voting started for the Harvest the Wind project, which was one of 15 projects in a
nationwide competition sponsored by Framers Insurance. Competing against schools in Brooklyn, New York and Los Angeles, California, the Green Team with the help of the student body started a social media push to get the word out to vote. Providing memes and videos for our Facebook page was Mrs. Reimer’s Photoshop/Film class. These original works of art were well received by the social media community. One of the videos reached 13,444 Facebook followers and had 6,800 views! The Harvest the Wind project got some great momentum as the month of October ended! With airtime coverage from FM99 The Mountain, 106.7 The Planet, even being picked up by Montana Public Radio, and a morning piece on the TV show Wake Up Montana, we hope people from across the state voted daily. We will not hear until December from Farmers Insurance if our project made it into the top 6, which will earn RLHS $100,000, but we are hopeful! We would like to thank everyone that voted once or 31 times throughout the month. Hopefully we will find the Turbine, thanks for being a fan. Student Leadership Kate Belinda The Student Council conducted the annual Coin Catch on October 25th to raise money for the Montana Make A Wish charity. Keeping with
previous years of raising over one thousand dollars, this year was no exception with $1,022.66 being raised! Student Council member McCall Allen, Quentin Castellani, Jillian LaValley, and Perry Watkins had the opportunity to present our funds at the Annual Montana Association of Student Council (MASC) meeting in Glasgow, MT. Together Student Councils from across the state raised over 13,000 dollars for the Make A Wish foundation. Perry, Jillian, McCall and Quentin at the Spillway at Fort Peck.
B i o l o g y Summer Graber As we wrap up Quarter 1, the
biology students wrap up their lessons on DNA. Mrs. Graber said "We have had
many interesting discussions this year as we took a look at new technology that allows DNA editing." Over the past couple of weeks the biology students have learned much about DNA, mutations and the new CRISPR technology that allows DNA to be altered. The students got to participate in a discussion/debate on the ethical issues involved with DNA editing. Mrs. Graber said "I was impressed with how well the students handled some controversial topics that came up and just how well they grasped the concept of ethics in general." Next students will tackle the ecology section of the biology course. Mrs. Graber said " I look forward to the discussions that will come with this next unit."
ProStart Culinary Arts Jenny Zimmerman Meeting some of Montana’s leading restaurant owners and chefs would be a rewarding experience for any culinary student, but this past month the students in the ProStart I class not only got to meet some of these industry leaders, but
work alongside them at the ProStart Fall Fundraiser. Students and mentor chefs from across the state gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bozeman on October 25th to prepare a 9-‐course small plate menu for over 100 restaurant owners and chefs along with professionals from a variety of foodservice businesses. Red Lodge students worked closely with Chef Eric Trager from Piney Dell Restaurant to prepare over 300 Carltons, which are homemade Ritz-‐style crackers served with 3 unique toppings including Bacon Jam, Herbed Goat Cheese and Raisin Salad. The students also helped serve during the evening festivities. This annual fundraiser helps fund the Montana ProStart program across the state.
Chef Eric Trager and RLHS ProStart Team Currently Red Lodge is one of only Montana 17 schools that offer this program which is sponsored by the National Restaurant Association. ProStart focuses on both Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management. If you would like to learn more about the program go to the national website at www.chooserestaurants.org or the state website at www.mtprostart.com. Agriculture/FFA Allyson Lammiman The Red Lodge FFA chapter has been working vigorously on a Farm to Fork dinner this November. We are striving for our dinner to be mostly locally produced,
and by our own efforts. The menu starts with our broiler chickens, which we have been raising since September and will process later this month. We shouted out to our community members that had apple trees and we went apple picking in order to make our own homemade applesauce. We are postponing egg sales starting this week in order to save them for our dinner and some delicious deviled eggs. Lastly in September FFA officer team propagated forty square feet of lettuce, spinach and carrots in the raised bed gardens behind the school where the chickens are located, for a salad. The rest of the menu will be a potluck dinner. This dinner will be our first annual attempt at a Farm to Fork Dinner and it will be open to FFA members and their families, with a few community FFA supporters. Wish us luck! If you have menu suggestions we would love that…please contact the FFA Advisor [email protected] LEARNING ABOUT DEBT Theresa Reimer
In Personal Finance class this year we have been learning about the realities of debt. Our students have been very excited about the concepts they have been learning. A few of the concepts that
have impacted our kids are The Emergency Fund, Pay Cash For Cars, and Debt Snowball.
With the Emergency Fund, they are learning to put away $500 into an emergency fund. This will allow them to handle emergencies that come along without blowing their budget. This is necessary because Murphy’s Law dictates that if something can go wrong, it will! The Pay Cash for Cars philosophy is a bit trickier. They need to decide how much they would be willing to spend on a car payment. Then, instead of purchasing the car with debt, they should wait or purchase a much cheaper car. For the next ten
months, put the payment amount away in a savings account. If they want to upgrade their car in ten months, they could. Continue putting the payment amount into an account each month and upgrade your car as necessary with no debt! Eventually they will own the car they want without paying any interest-‐-‐and with no debt! The Debt Snowball philosophy is a great way to get out of debt. Pick your smallest loan. (Loan 1) Put an extra amount of money toward Loan 1 every month. When Loan 1 is paid off, take the amount that you used to pay to Loan 1 and put it toward the next smallest loan. (Loan 2). Continue paying Loan 1 + Loan 2 amount to Loan 2 and it will be gone much sooner than expected! When Loan 2 is gone, choose your next smallest loan. Put Loan 1 amount + Loan 2 amount + Loan 3 amount to Loan 3. Now you are putting a significant amount of money toward paying off Loan 3. Continue this idea until you are debt free!! Astronomy Goes Out After Dark Kirt Nell
The RLHS Astronomy class meets several times a year outside of school to see objects in real life that we learn about in the classroom. The following photo of the moon was taken by a RLHS student at our November 7 2016 “Star Party” using only a handheld iPhone and a telescope.

The welding students at RLHS are helping out with the VFW Wall of Honor that is being constructed in front of the high school. The students are in the process of constructing the ADA handrail that will replace the current handrail attached to the block wall. The rail will be set opposite of the wall across the ramp. The VFW also asked if the program could build the letters for the top of the wall that will say “TIME WILL NEVER DIM THE GLORY OF THEIR SACRIFICES”. This will have 6” tall letters and will be affixed to the top of the curved block wall. The handrail is almost complete and the first section of letters are done. The wall will be dedicated in the future.
