RECEPTIONDear Nationally Recognized Awards Recipients and Distinguished Mentors: Usually at this time of year, we would hold our office’s Annual State and National Awards Reception with more than 300 students, parents, and family members in the audience. The provost and the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards team would present you with awards signifying both our admiration for and appreciation of your efforts. But nothing has been usual this year. We have all been working and learning remotely. Many special opportunities that you would normally have engaged in this spring and over the summer have been cancelled or delayed due to covid-19 concerns. Our event, like all large gatherings, has also been put on hold. While this has been a challenging spring, and there are likely more challenges ahead, our students, faculty, and staff members have an indomitable spirit. We are delighted to be able to celebrate your accomplishments in print if not in person. It has been a terrific year for our students and for the faculty and staff who support them. This booklet celebrates the excellent work of nearly 400 students, mentors, and team advisors. University of Arkansas students received over $2.8 million in competitive scholarships, fellowships, grants, and internships during the 2019-2020 academic year. These awards at both the state and national levels were earned on the basis of academic achievement, research, and community involvement. Many students will use this funding to help pay for either undergraduate studies or future graduate work. Recipients, however, win far more than recognition and funding. These awards help them realize important goals as they move toward careers in business, STEM fields, medicine, international relations, architecture, social sciences, and the arts and humanities. Many of the students in this booklet have competed nationally as a member of a team, bringing credit to themselves, to their colleges, and to the University. Wherever their careers take them, these students want to make real contributions to their disciplines and to their communities. To achieve such success, these excellent students work collaboratively with talented, well-known faculty members, who are generous with their time and support, year after year. It is a winning combination. The Office of the Provost and the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards are pleased to celebrate these accomplishments. We hope this celebrative moment finds you happy and healthy as the semester draws to a close. Sincerely, Suzanne McCrayVice Provost for EnrollmentDirector of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards
