located in the Asti region. In 1921 they decided to move to via Rattazzi in the old part of Alba, where they began a successful wine business.Nearly 40 years later, in 1939, Ercole, the family’s patriarch, secured the winery’s future when he purchased the Loirano estate from the Counts of Vassallo. The methods of preparing the grapes are the result of four generations of

The history of the winery started in 1962 with Valentino Paladin and has

developed thanks to the energies lavished by his children Carlo, Lucia and Roberto, carrying out the task of putting years of happy and fruitful experiences in the field to good use.

In 1977 Paladin family purchased the first vineyards in Annone Veneto, in a territory known for the production of high-quality grapes and founded the Bosco del Merlo estate. At the end of the ‘90s, the family purchased a further 50 hectares of land in Lison di Portogruaro, which is the heart of this wine area. Today, Bosco del Merlo estate is made up of 100 hectares. In spring 2001 the new headquarters were officially opened: a beautiful villa, built in the Palladian style hosting the head office, the trade and administrative departments.

The chateau’s cellar structure or foundation housed an original Chateau that was given by

the Comte de Provence to Gérard De Villeneuve, in 1201. Its first known proprietors after the de Villeneuves were two brothers, Sauver Louis Ranque and Francois Alexandre Ranque. In January of 1875, the Ranque brothers sold Chateau d’Esclans, then known as Terre d’Esclans, to the inventor of the French Wooden Match, Joseph Toussaint Caussemille whose family owned Chateau d’Esclans until 1955.

In 1955 Chateau d’Esclans was purchased by The

Perraud family who owned it until 1994. During that year, it was sold to a Swedish pension fund which produced nominal quantities of wines.

In 2006 Sacha Lichine acquired Chateau d’Esclans beginning a new and exciting history for this remarkable chateau and the 267 hectares surrounding it.

Grapes: 70 % Grenache, 30% Rolle Alcohol: 13.6% by Vol Average price: 80€

Tasting NotesVery herbal and somehow marine on the nose (though this estate is far, far inland). Bewitching lightness and dancing freshness. If this were a champagne house, this would be

its Blanc de Blancs. Very persistent and complex though in thoroughly refreshing register. I’m impressed!

The Counts of San Bonifacio are a family with 1100 years of history archived in their

Villa Mandriola in Padova. The family ruled Verona for more than two centuries where they were Conti and Podesta’. During the more recent history has seen the eldest son Count Manfredo and his English wife Countess Sarah enlarge their holdings into Tuscany. The love

affair with the Maremma region started for them five years ago. Earth, sky and life co-exist here uncontaminated by our modern and frenetic lives. Producing a haven of peace and tranquillity while at the same time harnessing the vines-they have created a wine lovers paradise.

It is located in the Monteregio di Massa

Cascina Gilli comprises a historic villa built in 1700 and surrounding

hectares. Gianni Vergnano, who has directed the winery estate since 1983, has poured into it his efforts and passion, with the result that Cascina Gilli stands as one of Piedmont’s most prestigious and influential wineries, first release was the Freisa Ferma Vendemmia 1985. A few years later, the winery acquired autoclaves, pressure fermenters for producing sweet wines and was thus able to make a Malvasia. This sweet wine, with an enthralling bouquet and delicious flavours, immediately garnered enthusiastic reviews in the Italian and international wine press. A large proportion of the labour over these years has gone into recovering grape varieties native to these hills, and that has substantially contributed to respect Cascina Gilli has won its Freisa, Barbera d’Asti, Bonarda Piemonte and Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco.

Cantina Tollo was founded in 1960 from the initiative of a small group of people, who wanted to give

value to an old tradition and try with enthusiasm, a new experience. Every choice, initiative, and innovation, have been made to achieve excellence in quality. In 1962, the first great step was taken: the wine-making methods. After ten years came the bottling, the invention of a brand and the creation of a new identity to introduce Cantina Tollo to the final consumer. Then with the help of an experienced oenologist they blended tradition and technology to start the production of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and of the Cerasuolo wines.
