Principal’s MessageHave you walked into a toy store lately? Walk down the aisles, and you will be amazed at what are considered the hottest toys on the market. Our children are surrounded by and influenced by today’s hyper-media market, it is vitally important to teach children, as well as adults to think critically – to have insight – discernment!!

With the media bombarding our children from all sides, how do we protect them? The answer is simple, but not easy. We must do our homework.

First, explain to a child in words they can understand that not all things they see or hear are good things. Tell them WHY you don’t want them to watch it. You can avoid a lot of resentment from a child if you will take the time to explain “why”.

Another strategy especially for older children is to ask them WHY? Telling them can help them build answers to this question and build evaluation skills so they can begin to see for themselves why something is good.

Finally, training children to ask questions is not enough by itself. It is also good practice to build a foundation on which they can base their answers. This base is in our Christian community is God’s Word – the Bible.Teaching our children discernment is hard work but remember the wisdom of Proverbs 22:6 to “Train a child in the way he should go...”

Have a great week!!

Thank you to all our parents who came in and watched us at work on Tuesday. We really appreciated your visit and for taking the time out to come and support our school.

There was great excitement on Tuesday with the eviction of a bat that has been resting in the entrance to our girls’ toilet. Mr Bennett came and rescued the ‘batman’ and relocated it at the back of the school.

Nanna shared some exciting news with us this week for Show and Tell. She had planted a pineapple head 2 years ago and managed to reap a pineapple from her plant. She brought it in to show us and we were able to ask her some questions about how she grew it.

We had a bubbling exciting time in Pre-Kindy as we conducted an investigation to see what would happen when we mixed baking soda and vinegar together. Mrs Thompson tried to capture the excitement on the student’s faces as they poured their vinegar into their cup. We learnt that vinegar plus baking soda gave bubbles of carbon dioxide gas, which overflowed from the glass. We learnt that vinegar and lemons are an example of an acid, and Lacee wondered what would happen if we mixed the lemon juice with the baking soda. So we tried it. It had the same reaction as the vinegar - lots of fizzy carbon dioxide bubbles!! We are on the look out for more exciting experiments. Our letters for the week were E, R and O, and we ate eggs, raisins and oranges. We are finding our letter sounds all around the classroom, and it is rewarding to see the children applying their new knowledge. Our Big Book was called, “Something Very Scary.” See if your child can tell you what the scary eyes were under Room 10. Our value this week has been, “Discernment”, and we learnt that discernment is making wise choices. Keep up the good work Pre-Kindy students - we are so proud of you all.

3-6 classWhat an exciting week it has been! We were just so proud to show our parents and visitors what we do at school on Open Day. We enjoyed combined worship and assembly in Mrs Cameron’s room. It was great to be able to pray together in our prayer groups. In Bible, we studied more about the story of Jeremiah and the difficulties he experienced as a prophet of God. We had a wonderful time using the iPads in our Maths and Writing lessons. We have been working hard to learn our timetables so it was great to be able have time on the iPads to consolidate our learning. We read about a place called Longreach in Reading and we discovered that it is a town in Australia with an important history. We really enjoyed making our emu sculptures in Visual Art. A BIG thank you to Mrs Ryan who taught us so that Miss Dias could talk to our visitors and show them around the School. We are also very grateful that Miss Parsons came to take us for our Music lesson in the afternoon and Mrs Thompson made a special trip to our classroom so that we could show our visiters how we produce TCN. Thank you, parents, for supporting this event! Well done, Years 3-6!

Gardening NewsThis week we planted some peas in our garden.

TCN NewsExciting times in the TCN news class as the Years 3-6 students were interviewed for the positions they have applied for. Some students brought a resume outlining their talents - well done to those who took the time to do this. Students were asked what their strengths and weaknesses were, and what they could contribute to their job. Mrs Thompson was very impressed with how everyone presented themselves, and I can see students doing very well when they need to sit for interviews in the future. Letters of job offers will be sent out later this week, so keep an eye on the letter box at home early next week.
