CRV STANDS FOR HEALTHY AND EFFICIENT COWS

To show the effect of selection of Better Life Health and Efficiency on actual New Zealand cow performance we conducted analysis on InSight herd data. Performance records were taken from 302,600 cows herd tested by CRV Ambreed and born after 2010.

The performance of the best 25% for Better Life Health and Efficiency was compared to the lowest 25%, by breed. The results show that a remarkable difference exists between these groups of cows, proving that big improvements in herd performance can be achieved by selecting cows and bulls for Better Life Health and Better Life Efficiency. These results were consistent across breeds.

The New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI) has been developed to enable New Zealand dairy farmers to breed a long-lasting, productive herd. NZMI is a desired gains index with a future focus on the genetic direction of your herd.

The NZMI breeding philosophy is focused on breeding a cow that will typically produce an average of 450kg of milk solids each year and last for 5.5 lactations.

The difference between NZMI and BW is emphasis placed on the overall opinion and selected type traits, that are strongly connected to long-lasting and productive animals.

The graphics below illustrate the difference between selecting solely on NZMI or solely on BW, and the expected response in your herd over a 10-year period.

These responses show that typically in the longterm NZMI: • Creates greater genetic gain on protein production while

maintaining the size of Holsteins • Places focus on the sustainability and efficiency of your

herd • Improves shed traits, capacity and udders.

ACROSS ALL BREED EVALUATIONThe New Zealand bull data in this catalogue is displayed across all breeds (unless stated). This is in line with how data is displayed in New Zealand by NZAEL. WHY ACROSS ALL BREED?Many grazing customers now select genetics from multiple breeds for their breeding program. It is therefore important for the farmer to understand how the animal should perform within his herd, not just within the breed of the herd. Therefore, we believe that an across breed evaluation is now the best tool to help you make breeding choices geared toward making your herd the most profitable it can be. What you will now observe is Jersey BVs for milk volume, live weight and stature will now appear lower, while fertility percentage will have increased. CONFORMATION

The height at the shoulder of the animal. This trait is measured across all breeds, resulting in all Jerseys being negative on the breeding values bar graph, Ayrshires being intermediate and Friesians being mainly positive.

Combination of strength and depth of chest and body as viewed from side, rear and front in relation to the physical size of the cow. This is an important trait and reflects an animals ability to convert feed into milk and withstand the rigours of life.

Distance between the most posterior point of the pin bones relative to the size of the animal. This trait is a good predictor of the width a cow has throughout her body.

Describes the angle between the centre of the hip and the top of the pin bone. A low score indicates the cow has high pins and a high score indicates low pins. A score of 5-6 describes a flat rump to slightly sloping which is optimal.

Measures the angulation or ‘set’ of the rear legs and is measured from an imaginary line between thurls and mid-hoof while the cow is walking. A low score indicates a straight leg, whilst a high score indicates a sickled or curved leg set. A score close to 5-6 is considered ideal.
