DEAR AVIAN PROFESSIONALS,
NEWS
With vaccination procedures becoming so important on thedelivery of efficacious vaccines to highly specialised and oftencostly birds, water quality, water distribution and flock behaviourmust be therefore ensured. AviBlue is an effervescent granulatewith an improved solubility formula, reducing negative effectsof tap water and visualising the flow of water in the drinking line.
AviBlue was designed in conjunction withLAH Director of Production and ProcessDevelopment Dr Klaus-Uwe Schwarz,Mr Helge Nestler from New BusinessDevelopment at the Feed AdditivesDepartment and Director of TechnicalServices Dr Michael Iburg.
It is a simple product that protects the administration of viral andbacterial live vaccines, enabling a better utilisation of each doseand vaccine titre and a longer maintenance of titre throughoutthe vaccination procedure.

– NEW WATER STABILISERDr Schwarz explains that AviBlue contains a neutralising agentwhich buffers the negative effects of hard water or residues ofchlorination on vaccination with live virus or bacteria in drinkingwater for poultry.
The deep blue colour given to the vaccine water by AviBlue allowsa visualisation of water flow in the drinking line, so the vaccinationcrew can ensure a homogenous distribution of vaccine throughoutthe flock, and even on the birds, through observation of stainedtongues or crops. The effervescent granules of AviBlue dissolvequickly and autonomously in the drinking water, therefore AviBlueoutmatches other granulated products.
AviBlue comes as a practical aid to ensure the better utilisationof our live vaccines and protect the investment on high-qualityimmunogenic products from Lohmann Animal Health.
AviBlue is not yet available to all markets worldwide. Currently theproduct is being utilised in test markets.
In October 2005 the depart-ment of Marketing – Poultry
Vaccines invited the technical servicepeople of distributors and LAH foreignrepresentative offices to 3 days of technicaltraining and discussion in Cuxhaven.
The aim of the conference was to givenew people a more detailed and intensiveintroduction to the products and to give
them the chance to benefit from theexperience of “older” colleagues as wellas to give scientific questions and theexchange of knowledge and informationan adequate forum.
The 28 participants from more than 20different countries were exposed toinformative and interesting presentationson diseases, products, positioning and
vaccination programmes by LAH and LAHItechnical support, marketing and sales
people. Every presentation was followedby several questions or raised topics thatlead to a lively debate, so that the planneddiscussion time was more than perfectlyfilled. Not only thanks to the speakers andtheir thoroughly prepared presentations, but also to the well organised socialprogramme, the seminar was a successfulevent and a memorable experience.

A Gumboro Vaccine Seminarfor veterinary clients from the
Netherlands and Belgium was organisedin early November 2005 by RolandBronneberg (technical support and salesconsultant, LAH the Netherlands). The
main reason for organising this event wasto provide customers with updated tech-nical and practical information on LAH’sGumboro vaccines: AviPro® GUMBOROVAC* and AviPro® PRECISE*.
Moreover, this setting was also chosen forcreating a relaxed atmosphere to exchangepractical experiences and informationregarding the Dutch and Belgian poultry(vaccine) market. On Friday afternoon, therefore, clients were offered to join theentertainment programme, which besidesquad racing, bow-and-arrow shooting andteam-building games, included a dinnerafterwards.
On Saturday morning, the actual seminarstarted and the following topics werepresented and discussed:
• Positioning and use of Gumboro vaccinesin general by Roland Bronneberg• Data from field trials with broiler flocksin Germany, comparing performance aftervaccination with AviPro® GUMBORO VACand a competitor intermediate IBD vaccine,by Dr Michael Iburg (LAH’s TechnicalSupport Department)
• The use of and experience with ‘hot’Gumboro vaccines, as well as AviPro®
GUMBORO VAC and AviPro® PRECISEunder field conditions in a poultry-densearea of Germany, by Dr Hermann Block(specialised poultry practitioner in Germany).
Dr Thijs van Dijk, from LAH’s MarketingDepartment, was chairman during theseminar.
Overall, discussions were numerous, interesting and refreshing, and fromvarious clients’ point of views. LAH is showing its new face, also in theNetherlands and Belgium – working withthe Avian Professionals.*Formerly TAD Gumboro vac lyo and TAD Gumboro vac forte.
Events/visits
From 29 November to 2 De-cember a number of Venezuelan
integrators, veterinarians and representa-tives from authorities visited the Cuxhavenheadquarters.
The group was accompanied by salesmanager Adriana Baruch and technicalrepresentative Dr Beatriz Cardoso fromLohmann Animal Health Brazil as well asRafael Guerra and Virginia Aizpurua fromthe Venezuelan distributor Binveca.
During their stay, the group was notonly exposed to an introduction toLohmann Animal Health’s company
profile by Anna-Christina Riebau, but alsogot a deeper insight into the productsAviPro® SALMONELLA VAC E, AviPro®
SALMONELLA VAC T and AviPro® THYMOVACfrom presentations by Dr Thijs van Dijk,Dr Anne Vits and Eduardo Bernardi.
Binveca is currently in the process ofregistering these vaccines for theVenezuelan market.
Dr Anne Vits, who lives in Bremen, volunteered to give our guests an excitingand interesting tour through her city.Besides the very valuable technicalinformation the Venezuelans received
during their stay in Germany, they alsohad the chance to be introduced to atypical German custom in Bremen – theChristmas market with “Glühwein”.

Since the late 1980s, the acute form ofInfectious Bursal Disease (IBD), inducedby the very virulent IBD virus (vvIBDV) –a pathotypic variant of IBDV – causedsignificant economical losses to thepoultry industry in several countries. In thecase of vvIBD, the virus is extraordinarily
virulent and able to break through relativelyhigh levels of maternally derived antibodies(MDAs). The young chicks are exposed toa very early field challenge.
Intermediate vaccines cannot be givenearly enough to protect the chicks. In thetime the field virus is already attacking thechicks, they will still be neutralised bythe high levels of MDAs due to their lowerbreakthrough titre.
Only intermediate plus vaccines are ableto take early enough to protect the chicksagainst this early field challenge.
The new intermediate plus vaccine fromLohmann Animal Health against InfectiousBursal Disease, AviPro® IBD XTREME, isthe right choice to combat vvIBD success-fully. With a virus neutralisation (VN)breakthrough titre of approximately 9, it ispossible to administer it early enough toprotect the young chicks against the earlychallenge of vvIBD and thereby reduce themortality in the flock caused by the veryvirulent virus. AviPro® IBD XTREME is alyophilised live intermediate plus vaccineagainst IBD containing the Winterfield
2512 strain. The vaccine can be applied viathe drinking water, by spray or eye drop.
Currently, AviPro® IBD XTREME isavailable in the USA and under registrationin several other countries.
Distributors and end users are very excitedwith the results and promises of the newproduct. Things are just getting warm –and there is a lot more to come!

AviPro® 108 FC4 GOLD, a bacterin againstFowl Cholera containing four differentstrains of Pasteurella multocida in a novelWOW adjuvant (water-in-oil-in-water)was tested for ducks at the KasetasartUniversity, in Nakhornpathom, Thailand.
The purpose of the trial was to verifyefficacy of AviPro® 108 FC4 GOLD againsta local strain of Pasteurella isolated froman outbreak in ducks in Thailand.
One group of 25-day-old ducklings wasvaccinated intramuscularly with an auto-genous vaccine (produced by the ThaiMinistry of Agriculture). Another groupwas vaccinated intramuscularly (0.25 ml)with the LAH vaccine AviPro® 108 FC4GOLD. At 51 days of age, all groups wereinoculated with an intranasal challenge of0.2 ml of 105 CFU/ml of the local strain.Efficacy was measured as protectionagainst mortality.
The Lohmann vaccine AviPro® 108 FC4GOLD proved to protect against mortalitydue to challenge by the Thai strain ofPasteurella multocida. This South EastAsian trial adds to the features of thisinnovative product, already used inCentral Europe against Pasteurellamultocida outbreaks in waterfowl.

AviPro® PRECISE is ideal for the follow-up of “hot” vaccines, inorder to improve productivity.
The practice of utilising hot vaccines to combat vvIBDV iscommon for the control of these early field challenges that breakthrough higher levels of maternal antibodies. However, broilerperformance may be deteriorated by bursal damage andimmuno-suppression. Once the load of field challenge is reducedthrough the continuous use of hot vaccines, focus can switchback to improvement of broiler performance.
In order to compare production results of broilers vaccinated witha hot vaccine with those birds vaccinated with an intermediatevaccine, a field trial was conducted in collaboration with a broilerintegration in Turkey.
The farms included in the trial had a long history of using hot IBDvaccines on their premises, and one of the questions of this trialwas to determine whether switching from a hot vaccine to anintermediate one would increase profitability of the production.A total of 146,500 birds (Ross 508) were housed on farms with ahistory of IBD outbreaks and long use of hot vaccines. One groupof 5 houses was vaccinated with an intermediate IBD vaccine(AviPro® PRECISE), and another group of 6 houses with a hot IBDvaccine (from competitor).
Under those conditions, AviPro® PRECISE performed better thanthe competitor hot vaccine, both with regards to mortality andfeed conversion, making the (calculated) European PerformanceIndex (EPEF) 13.7 points higher for the LAH vaccine.

AviPro® 108 FC4 GOLD isone of the new inactivatedbacterins from LohmannAnimal Health (togetherwith AviPro® 101 Coryza
GOLD), which take advantage of the novelWOW adjuvant technology. This specialemulsification procedure has allowed us toproduce a bacterin utilising water and oilingredients for adjuvants in a procedurethat ensures efficacy but reduces thelikelihood of site lesions and reactions.Whereas traditional inactivated vaccinestake the water in oil emulsions, utilising at
least 70 % of mineral oil, this new WOWtechnology reduces the oil proportion toless than 50 % and changes the exteriorphase into water.
Advantages of the WOW emulsion in abacterin include lower tissue reactivity; itprevents losses from prostration, stiff necksand pain; no abscesses or granulomas onthe injected site; no residues at slaughterand an easier fluidity on the operation.
For protection of chickens against FowlCholera, AviPro® 108 FC4 Gold is thefirst of its type to be licensed for intramuscular injection. This method providesgreater ease of application, allowing for
one less person on the vaccination crewwith reduced risk of injury to the bird andto the personnel (self-injection). Breastvaccination is a less demanding operation, which also costs less.

Bill Nash, consultant veterinary surgeon to Lohmann Animal Health has died, aged 49, at his homein Southampton following a long illness.
Bill was widely known throughout the poultry industry for his specialist expertise, both on-farm ina troubleshooting role, and with regulatory authorities. He was responsible for licensing two of theUK’s most popular salmonella vaccines for poultry – TAD Salmonella vac E and TAD Salmonellavac T (now AviPro® SALMONELLA VAC E and T).
They were the first live, oral salmonella vaccines to be licensed in the UK, paving the way forlicensing in other EU countries. These offer great welfare benefits by avoiding the need forfarmers to inject millions of chickens.
Bill, who qualified at the Royal Veterinary College, London, where he gained a distinction in biochemistry, had a distinguishedcareer, encompassing general practice and senior posts with pharmaceutical companies. He also worked closely with the UKgovernment’s Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Weybridge, Surrey, where he was involved in registration of vaccines and hadresponsibility for releasing licensed products.
As well as his clear-thinking and ability to cut through complex problems, Bill will be remembered for his down-to-earthprofessional approach and great sense of humour.

Lohmann has introduced onits range of live vaccinesnew tear-off ring aluminiumcaps. The new tear-off capsare a lot easier to open andtherefore guarantee the livevaccine user a more practical utilisation. Due tothe new colour combination possibilities we gainedwith the change of caps, the colour codes havebeen changed as well.
To make this modification as undisturbing as possible, new colour code tables forvaccines from Germany (LAH) and the USA (LAHI) are available on request, whichin addition are aids to identify the new AviPro® names of the vaccines.
The success of TAD Salmonella vac T (soon AviPro® Salmonellavac T), our live vaccine against Salmonella Typhimurium, islikely to spread from countries which are already utilising iton a regular basis towards a more broad range of areas in the European Union.
In December 2005, the Mutual Recognition procedure for the registration of TADSalmonella vac T was finished, with the approval of all countries requested. The listincludes Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Belgium, Slovakia and theCzech Republic. For Italy, in particular, this is a major breakthrough, as no other livevaccines for Salmonella Typhimurium were allowed on the market. A completesafety profile and the support of easy laboratory techniques (such as AviPro® Plate) forthe differentiation of field and vaccine strains were all instrumental for the approvalof this vaccine under the strict control of European Veterinarian Authorities.
