Aviation English instructor training – Spring 2014
A five day course for teachers of aviation English according to the ICAO language proficiency
requirements
Course Components
1. Pre-course reading (10 hours)
Before the courses begin, each trainee is required to research and
give a presentation on an aviation incident in which language was
found to be a contributory factor.
2. Aviation English language teaching (25 hours)
This core module is comprised of a range of theoretical and practical training sessions which:
Ø Review the regulatory language proficiency requirements (LPRs) in the aviation industry such as the
ICAO LPRs for pilots and air traffic controllers and LPRs for aircraft maintenance personnel
Ø Analyse the key language teaching points from pronunciation and technical vocabulary to function
and communication strategies
Ø Examine a range of authentic sources of reading and listening texts and job-specific speaking and
writing activities
Ø Explore syllabus design and lesson planning to meet specific learner needs
3. Aviation familiarisation (10 hours)
Aviation familiarisation is a 7.5 hour elective module designed to further trainees' understanding of how
events in aviation operations impact communications. Aviation familiarisation is designed specifically for
those without a professional background in aviation. Aviation familiarisation:
Ø Is taught by aviation subject matter experts
Ø Guides trainees through a complete journey from pre-flight to shut down
Ø Explains the role and responsibilities of aviation operations personnel
Ø Covers a range of non routine situations and common threats to safety
Ø Involves visits to a jet simulator, maintenance, repair and overhaul workshop and cabin crew
training facilities
The course is delivered by Henry Emery, manager of author of Aviation English and Check Your Aviation
English (Macmillan), and Captain Dennis Gliddon.
Price
£795 GBP per person (including all classroom materials, certification and aviation familiarisation visits). We
would be delighted to offer a discount of 15% on group bookings of 3 or more.
