Juan Pablo Medina Flechas Activity for March 28th Mitigation was the generator of the principal misunderstanding by the air traffic controller about the real situation of fuel with the Avianca Flight 052 and in the interaction between their pilots. The whole disaster could have been avoided although they couldn’t land on the first try. The captain didn´t know of to delegate responsibilities, which produced an excess of calm by the first officer Klotz; Caviedes took over all instead of claiming support by his officers. On the other hand, Klotz trying to maintain the tone of respect with the controller, did not transmit the correct situation of the plane; a clear sign of mitigation. Klotz took an attitude of subordinate, product of the clash of cultures. He saw the airport controllers as hostile people who were in a higher range, and he did not dare to suggest another place of landing on the whole time of queuing.
