AVEVA EngineeringManages evolving multi-discipline data for tagged engineering items such as lines and equipment

AVEVA Engineering enables multi-disciplinary teams of specialist engineers to work together in an effective manner as they jointly develop the definition of all the key engineering items involved in plant and marine projects.

As the engineers work, they build a database of engineering objects, including items such as lines, equipment and valves, together with all of their key attributes. Advanced technology allows this process to take place across multi-disciplinary teams in such a way that each discipline retains full control of its part of the information relating to any item.

The product has a highly configurable data model allowing it to be adapted to fit a wide range of project, customer and industry requirements, and to manage virtually any scope of project engineering data. For example, customers may choose to use the product to manage just the line data, or they may expand their usage to manage data, for instance, for items such as equipment and valves.

A wide variety of fully formatted reports can be generated automatically from the database, including key project documents such as master tag registers, line lists, equipment lists and valve lists, as well as any kind of ad hoc or departmental report.

z Gets engineering data out of disconnected spreadsheets and into a database – more effective management, control and exploitation of data.

z Allows multi-discipline engineering teams to work together more effectively – increased design efficiency, quality and multi-location, global working.

z Enables changes to be implemented more quickly, and controlled and communicated more effectively – reduced impact of change on cost, schedule, quality and risk.

z Enables a wider range of data inconsistencies to be detected during design – increased design quality and reduced risk of costly, late design changes and associated rework.

z Unrivalled opportunities for integrated schematics, engineering and 3D working – enables new, more effective working practices to be introduced.

The user is able to easily create and modify data in the database using both spreadsheet and database explorer-style user interfaces. Any required view of the data can be created. For example, the user may wish to:

z interact with the database via a standard engineering list for some tasks, potentially modifying several items in a single action

z create any number of specialist views of the data applicable to particular tasks

z navigate the plant breakdown structure and work solely on the detailed information for a single item.

Database access controls are in full operation at all times, controlling how much of the data the user may view and/or change.

All changes to the data are automatically stored in the database, and information about changes is accessible to other users on demand as they carry out their daily work.

Configurable consistency checks can be applied across the database at any time to check the quality of the data.

Built-in status control tools enable the status of individual objects to be carefully controlled and made visible to other users of the information as they work.

Compare and Update utilities allow the identification of inconsistencies with data created in other AVEVA products and/or external systems and data sources.

The product can be configured to suit a wide range of project, customer and industry requirements, and is built on AVEVA’s proven PDMS and Outfitting technology, which allows distributed, multi-location working with AVEVA Global.

AVEVA Engineering includes a powerful programming language (PML) and .NET APIs, allowing all kinds of customer/industry customisations and automations to be applied.

Above: AVEVA Engineering allows different sources of information to be efficiently developed in parallel in the early stages of a project

Right: At an appropriate time in the project, data can be linked together enabling consistency checking across multiple sources

Key Featuresz Database approach with proven, scalable, multi-user

technology Delivers the concurrent, multi-discipline, multi-user working

environment required across project engineering teams on typical plant and marine projects.

z Sophisticated access controls Allows each engineering discipline to be in full control of its

own data for any given item, whilst allowing other project users to be able to view the complete data. Includes the ability to maintain issued and working versions of each discipline’s data.

z Automatic change recording and highlighting Changes are automatically recorded in the database. Change

information can be selectively viewed by users as they work, with the ability to highlight additions, deletions and modifications within any dataset that the user is working with.

z Highly configurable All aspects of the product, including the data model,

engineering discipline boundaries and access rights, are highly configurable. The product also includes a powerful programming language (PML) and .NET APIs allowing all kinds of customer/industry customisations and automations to be applied.

z Modern, easy-to-use user interface Microsoft® Office Fluent™-based user interface makes the

product quick to learn and easy to use. Users interact with the database via familiar spreadsheet functionality.

z In-built status control Engineers have better visibility of the quality of information,

and can generate progress reports directly from their working data.

AVEVA Engineering allows each discipline to be in full control of their own data, whilst working with data issued from the other disciplines

AVEVA Engineering manages the evolution of data throughout the project

Key Features (continued)

Engineers working in the spreadsheet view can navigate to the P&ID; this example shows the ability to instantly view the P&ID on which a valve in the valve list appears

z Compare and Update Compare and Update utilities allow parts

of the AVEVA Engineering data to be compared against data created in other AVEVA products and/or external systems, and allow updates to be selectively applied as, where and if required. This makes the alignment with a new revision of data from another engineering department easier and faster.

z Data consistency checks A wide range of inconsistencies can be

detected in the engineering data itself and across the engineering, 3D, schematic, instrumentation and electrical datasets.

z Automatic reports direct from the database

A wide variety of project quality, formatted reports can be produced directly from the database, including conventional engineering documents, such as line lists, equipment lists and master tag registers (all configured as required), ad hoc reports, progress reports and status charts.

z Same technology infrastructure as AVEVA’s PDMS, Outfitting, Diagrams and Schematic 3D Integrator products

Existing system administration and customisation/configuration skills can be used for AVEVA Engineering.

z Opportunities for new levels of integrated working

In-built integration keys allow access to data created in PDMS and/or Outfitting, and to P&ID and other diagramming data held in AVEVA schematic databases, providing unrivalled integration opportunities. Project engineers have access to a much more extensive dataset as they carry out their daily work. Linking mechanisms can selectively connect the different datasets, allowing transitions between parallel and single source working, as required at different stages of the project.
