Terrorism and environment have been trending global topics for a while now. While USA has decided to focus on its war on terror, countries and agencies all over the world are working towards raising climate change awareness. Dhaka Art Lab hosted a day long, open air, art exhibition to shed light on various issues affecting Mother Nature particularly in Bangladesh.

Destination unknown:Climate, Life & BehaviorThe exhibition was the premier public art project of Dhaka Art Lab, held at Dhanmondi Lake. The aim was to explore how our actions are paving the path towards a destination which remains unknown to us.

Artists’ cornerAli Asgar, a student of Charukola was one of the 20 artists who took part in this exhibition. His installation depicts the fact that urban behaviour patterns tend to ignore the environment around us

and that life has become only about living and leading a healthy life in a healthy surrounding has taken a backseat.

Paving the way through artDhaka Art Lab is a platform initiated by a group of Charukola alumni and current students. They want to use art as a tool to explore deeper realms of knowledge. How do they plan to do so? By encouraging artists who want to blend various creative disciplinary such as history, anthropology, nature, science into creating a piece of art.

| Adila HoqueForget the idea of Christmas; it is never too early to start planning a gift to give to your loved ones

As tradition goes in the Western world, on the Christmas morning, gifts are stuffed inside stockings, the stockings are labelled with the receiver’s name and hung over the fireplace. Since a fireplace and stockings are as unessential in our country as polar bears, we probably cannot do that. However, you can have the wrapped presents hung in your living or dining room. Maybe you could make it an Eid tradition or something, or even during birthdays.

Now, many of you may be unaware of the fact that the charm of a gift lies in its unwrapping as well as in the “thought” that went with it. Having mentioned that, why not make these gifts a little more special for them?

If you already have stockings to stuff your presents with, very well. If not, you can have your custom-made alternate - a tissue box! And in absolutely no time at all. Most tissue boxes come in a moderate size, making it impossible to fit some of your larger items in them. So, here is how you can make your own tissue box/gift wrapper:

You will need:• A tissue box• Ruler• Fabric• Scissors• Pin• Thread• Sewing machine

Instructions:1. Use a ruler to measure out

exactly how large your box needs to be and add 0.25-inch for the seam.

2. Cut open each side of the fabric, and then cut out another hole in the fabric using measurements from before.

3. Cut small slits in each corner of the openings, fold back the edges and hem them in.

4. Sew all sides of the box to fit around your present.

5. Cut out tiny 0.25-inch squares in each corner of the top piece to create flaps that wrap around the four sides of the box.

6. Turn the right side out.7. Decorate as you wish.

If you want to use it a box, it would be a lot simpler, and much easier to decorate. Best of luck.

Gifts for the holidaysgadgetsapps

| Mahmood Hossain| Mahmood Hossain

Nowadays, no matter which holiday or special event, seems like reaching for a particular tech item is the easiest thing to do. The reason for this is you have, what looks like, a countless variety of gadgets. There is actually something for everyone. However, we gather there are more popular items on display than others. In other words, we have to cater to the market’s demands so here’s a short list you might want to consider before you go on giving the best gift to your loved ones.

Purchasing an e-reader or a legitimate tablet can be a fantastic gift for any book lover. But it’s not just about pages and pages of wonderful fictional worlds. These tablets are meant to entertain more than just one way. Magazines, music, videos, browsing, playing games, and taking part in social media all come into play. For the avid reader, this is the perfect device to pack thousands of books all in one place. It’s very convenient, and you don’t have to worry about messing up the pristine state of a paperback or hardcover. Don’t worry about the price either, there’s plenty of solid tablets out there at more than affordable prices.

While not all tablets have the calling function, you’re receiving more incentives than a smartphone on a larger display. These devices can also be used as an educational tool. From the obvious reading materials to the many learning applications – they’re all available for children and adults alike. Let’s not forget how these tablets are vital for many people and their careers; it’s one of the best substitutions to laptops and desktops. Mobility is the game, and these devices are no pushovers. The big winners of 2014, that will take you well into next year, are worth the buy. More importantly, they all make for a valued gift for the holidays. So here are the top five tablets to get (in no particular order).

Apple iPad Air 2This is no secret. Apple has its die hard lovers and fanboys, and it has a large population of haters. No matter the opinion, the Apple brand is an icon. Its build quality, design, and certain features will always set them apart from the rest. While other tablets maybe catching up or even exceeding the expectations of consumers, the iPad will always be a worthy contender at the top. In fact, it’s still a champion.

Gadgets can be the easiest gift to give, but which ones are the best?Transactions through mobile devices get easier and easier

Nokia N1Okay, it’s not out just yet but it won’t stop us from waiting eagerly for the next iPad Mini killer. This device is an exciting prospect, which happens to be one of the several reasons to get a smaller tablet instead of their older counterparts. And remember, this can be a gift on any special occasion so if you want to wait a tad longer, it’ll definitely be worth it.

Google Nexus 9 by HTCIt is the most pure, premium Android tablet to date. This is an actual contender to the top spot in the tablet market, giving the iPad a run for its money. The design is

Microsoft Surface Pro 3It’s expensive, yes. But it’s undeniably the best Windows based tablet. The market can be stifling with so many Android devices floating around so it’s refreshing to see Microsoft in the race to be the best. This particular device flirts along the lines of a tablet and an ultrabook or laptop. It’s still an impressive device and could be the right fit for many users.

beautiful, as expected by HTC, and the 5.0 Lollipop makes this the best performing Android tablet around. The Nexus 9 really provides a fantastic experience.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4We know, it’s not a tablet but a so called “phablet.” We also know that term can become annoying really fast, but we had to drop this not so little wonder to the list. Plain and simple, this phablet is an amazing device. And with so many creative Android apps in the market, you can fully take charge and advantages of its pen, the award-winning stylus.

SHAREit (Available for free on Google Play, Windows Phone, Windows Desktop, and App Store.)Simple little applications tend to fly right under our noses without a second glance. SHAREit is a super easy app, across different platforms, that lets users send and receive files from 1MB to 100GB in a flash. This is no exaggeration. While this app isn’t new, the updates have significantly altered the original app’s make-up. All you need to do is download the app on either your smartphone or tablet and share away. Bluetooth is still an option but this hands you a more convenient, much faster, experience. Even file sharing through your desktop can be a quick process. SHAREit can be downloaded to your PC so that a USB cable or connecting through Bluetooth can be bypassed. The only necessary step is to make sure your devices are on the same WLAN connection; which means you’ll need Wi-Fi. This app is a must-have if you tend to transfer files on a regular.

Kaymu Online Marketplace (Available for free on Android and BlackBerry.)If you’re familiar with the online shopping scene, this local focused app can be a lot of help. This is a place where people come to search, discover, sell and buy products of all kinds. Kaymu provides online shopping for anyone in Bangladesh so it’s a natural step to make into mobile devices. There’s no fuss in negotiating or being ripped off, as each seller is a trusted one. Now, whether each item is genuine, the judgement will be left up to you. The main website provides for an easy and simple shopping experience, but the app itself isn’t perfect. While we’re sure there are many updates and fixes ahead, Kaymu remains the best online shopping hub within these borders.

Road Rage

A winter night with your girlfriend by your side on a romantic rickshaw ride. And bang! Your rickshaw is hit by another vehicle. Mist and fog reign supreme during most evenings and early mornings in December and January. Not just rickshaws but even buses are not safe from accidents especially during this time of the year. Back in 2010, a bus carrying 58 people crashed into a tree in the Southeast region of Dhaka killing a number of the passengers on the spot. Upon investigation it was found that the cause of the accident was the poor visibility because of the fog.

Another similar incident took place in 2011, when a bus stopped in the middle of the highway on its way from Rangpur due to deep fog. Two running vehicles came and hit this bus causing the instant death of nine passengers.

This year dense fog causing low visibility hampered and suspended movement in the Shimulia-Kewrakandi waterway route. As a result, passengers and vehicles are stuck on both ends of the Padma River.

At times like these, we realise how helpless we are when faced with the onslaught of Mother Nature. However, precaution is always better than cure. Highways are the most dangerous during winter, so to be on the safe side, always travel during the daytime and avoid travelling at night at all costs. But if you really have to, make sure that the driver has full concentration on driving the vehicle. Since bicycles are a common mode of transport during winter, it is imperative that you have a headlight attached to it so that it can at least be somewhat spotted in the fog. Pay extra attention to crossing roads, taking your car out particularly at night and also while getting on a bus. Go an extra mile by asking your rickshaw puller to be extra careful.

The Hero Xtreme Sport is the Indian bike maker’s mid-segment flagship 150cc sports bike. It is a hardcore thoroughbred racing bike for the strong hearted ones. Not surprisingly then, the biggest talking points for the Hero Xtreme are the styling cues and the features. Moreover it must be said, that it does beat its competition hollow on both counts.

DesignWhen you take into account the styling, everything has changed. The all new Xtreme has a tall stance and riders will feel confident, thanks to the upright riding posture that feels right when travelling. All the body panels are reworked and it comes across as a slimmer and leaner version than the previous models. The dual tone mudguard in the front is well carved out, stylish unit and the headlamp sits right above the mudguard, enveloped in a minimal dual tone cowl and tinted visor and equipped with smartly designed LED parking lights. The dual tone body coloured rear view mirrors provide ample view. While it highlights a rather familiar fuel tank, and a pleasing single saddle, the finicky rear grab handles add a new dimension to the outlook of the bike.

Performance and handlingAt the heart of the Hero Xtreme sport is the same old four-stroke, 149.2cc carburetted and air-cooled engine but with a bumped up power output of 15.2HP generated at 8,500rpm, and a peak torque of 12.8Nm coming in at 6,500rpm. It also retains the same five-speed gearbox from the previous models, engaging the rider with a smooth yet precise feel in a one-down and four-up shift pattern. Surprisingly the clutch feels a lot lighter from the previous generation.

The engine feels smooth when hauling in traffic with adequate low-end torque. It fits right in when cruising

around at speeds of up to 80kph. The upright riding position provides relaxed ergonomics with a well padded saddle and nicely positioned footrests. This aids the motorcycle handle far better than its predecessors, with good straight-line stability and surefooted cornering manners. With disc-brakes both in front and rear, the stopping distance of the Xtreme has been minimised by quite a bit.

TechnologyThe Xtreme gets a redesigned blue backlit instrument display, a speedometer, odometer, tachometer, dual trip metres, a fuel-gauge, plus a clock. The bike now comes equipped with a smart key that has a sensor chip, which is mated to a particular bike, so that no other key can be used. The Xtreme comes with familiar switchgear and stylish new clip-on handlebars that have comfortable grips and truncated, conical bar-end weights. In addition it also features a useful mobile charging point placed right under the seat. What caught our attention though is the ignition cut off system. If by any chance you ride off without the bike side-stand down, it will eventually cut off the ignition as a safety measure. Overall, the new Xtreme Sport is quite elegant. It is a handsome motorcycle that comes loaded with plenty of useful features. It is a good value-for-money package for riders looking for an up-to-date design, a reliable engine, and comfortable ergonomics with decent all-round package.

I have been working at a leading company that is headed by a small, close knit family. Our chairman sir’s

eldest son K is my direct superior and I report to him. He is a kind, considerate man and has always treated me fairly. His brother M, on the other hand, is an obnoxious new addition to the company who just graduated from the UK. He treats everyone at work as if they’re his property. Often times, he assigns me duties that aren’t part of my responsibilities, and just dumps them on me and expects me to do them. I have been taking his torture for four months now but I can no longer tolerate being treated like this. I would explain it to my boss but I don’t want to sound like I’m bad mouthing his brother. Help!

|Avenue T deskYou need to really step up your game and be firm about your stance. I understand that this is a

work environment and it gets difficult to voice your say, especially when it involves one of your superiors. However, you mustn’t just sit there and take it all. K will assume that you are okay with the additional responsibility and never appreciate or understand the amount of extra work you are doing. I suggest that the next time M asks you to take up another responsibility, politely mention that you will try but you have other work. Then inform K, again, very politely that it is sometimes a little pressurising to take up additional tasks that aren’t your responsibility, especially when you have other work. See how he responds to this and then take it from there. Remember - you never want to offend either of them, but you do want to make your feelings known.

| Avenue T deskMy fiancée and I broke up last month after a courtship that lasted for four years. She has always been the over

possessive, over bearing type and for the last six months I just couldn’t take it anymore. We were close to getting married and I really wanted her to change her ways, however, she failed, time and again. I got fed up of it all and broke it off with her and started talking to S, just as distraction. It was a passing fancy, and I really meant to just distract myself. Once my fiancée found out about S, things got worse. I’m trying to speak to her now, but she won’t even hear a word I have to say. She has me blocked, doesn’t respond to texts and when she does, it’s filled with vile words and abusive comments about me and my family. What should I do?

When you decided to steer clear of her and broke off the engagement that is

when you made the decision for yourself. You chose to leave her and the life you two had planned and called it off then and there. At that point of time you believed that was what you should’ve done since you couldn’t cope with her jealousy issues. However, after S entered the picture you seem to be confused about what you really want. You’re saying you want your fiancée back but then again, you don’t realise that she

If, however, he does not want you to see friends in general, he may also be very controlling and in that case, get out of the relationship as things will get worse afterwards. Decorating your home for Christmas - or any other festival - is almost as fun as opening new presents on the morning of your birthday. Whether or not you’re celebrating Christmas, it never hurts to light up your home and make it look like you are. The sparkling touches add to the beauty of the mild winter we experience in our country.

GreetTo begin with, you could get hold of a wreath (it symbolises eternal life) and hang it on your front door. It will make your guests feel more welcome at your home, and may even indicate to passers-by that your home has inhibited the Christmas spirit, whether or not you are practising.

IlluminateGet multi-coloured outdoor lights to liven up the entrance, but don’t turn it into a tragic kaleidoscope because that looks downright tacky. Some monochromatic lights could be used to frame the doors and windows, if you are into those.

The trinketsNow, if you are celebrating Christmas, and you have a Christmas tree available, it must be adorned with elaborate ornaments, lights, garlands, and topped with something nice. As for the stockings, hang them in the same room the tree is located. Also, do not forget the mistletoe. Hang up lights all around this room as this should be the centre of attention during the festival. To add your own touch, you could maybe put down a doormat, place candles on the windows, and even make paper snowflakes. The candles will give the atmosphere a warm touch in this wintry weather.

Even if you are not celebrating this day, it is always nice to have some special meaning attached to a day and have fun. Merry Christmas!

health

Food rulesPeople are 80% more likely to get a cold during this time of the year. To keep seasonal flu and colds at bay you need to strengthen your immune system through healthy eating.

Kick-starting your dayStart your day with a nutritious and filling breakfast. A bowlful of porridge can be a great option – it’s high in fibre and has tons of health benefits that’ll provide you with an instant boost of energy.

Make yourself a super healthy, super delish breakfast by soaking porridge in semi-skimmed or skimmed milk or even water, steer clear of adding any sugar or salt though. Throw in a few dried apricots, raisins, a sliced banana or other any other fruit for added flavour and nutrition.

Winter woesWhen the temps go down

Winter has finally come. And as much as we enjoy cosying up under the blanket, sipping on hot chocolate and flip through our favourite novel, we have to watch out for the harshness the season comes along with.

| Khan N Moushumi

Food autopsiesIncorporating Vitamin C in your diet on a regular basis will help keep your immune system strong. Fruits and veggies such as lemons, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage, raw tomatoes, capsicum, broccoli, orange, amla, guava, papaya, kiwifruit, etc. have a number of nutritional benefits that help strengthen your immune system. You can make a fruit-veggie salad, have them raw or even juice them. A mixture of carrot, beetroot, spinach and lemon will work wonders for your immune system.

The good kind of fatWe cannot stress more on the importance of dairy products – they should always make it to your diet chart. Cheese and yoghurt are some great sources of vitamins A and B12, as well as protein. They’re both crucial to strengthen our bones as they’re both

high in calcium. If you’re worried about putting on weight when it comes to yoghurts, go for either skimmed or semi-skimmed milk. Also incorporate plenty of lean meats, fish, poultry, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and use lots of herbs and spices.

Staying activeWinter or not, it’s never a good idea to just stay in all day and laze about. Go out there and sweat it out. Why? Despite the weather, exercising or any other physical activity for that matter, will help regulate your eating and sleeping habits, in addition to reducing your stress level and keeping your weight in check. Go out for a walk or go cycling with a friend or even a

family member. Logout from Facebook and Twitter and socialise with people around you. It’s a great way to break out from isolation and boost your mood – and the happier you feel, the more productive you’ll be.

Ain’t no sunshineWhether at work or home, locking ourselves up in our little chamber may lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). A little sunshine would come in handy now. Plus it’s got tons of vitamin D as well – another reason to go out there and bask in sunrays for at least 10 minutes a day. Beating the winter blues with rays of sunshine has proved to clear your mind and stay positive. So what are you waiting for?

of Music, having worked with Arnob, Fuad Almuqtadir, Lokkhi Terra and a whole lot of other big names. She also composed the soundtrack for the movie Shongram.

Q There is news about you coming up with a new band as well as

an album. What can your fans look forward to?

A Yes. I just moved to Dhaka a week ago after graduating from Berklee

College of Music and am rounding up some new musicians to start up a band. It’s my first album of my English originals called “Simultaneously.” My Boston band and I did an East Coast tour to promote the album in October. Now we’re hoping to do some shows in Dhaka and the surrounding areas. I’m also forming a choir as a second project and currently making vocal arrangements for this group.

Q Did the fact that your mother is a singer influence you to take the

same path?

A Yes and no. The fact that music is in my family and my mother sings

gave birth to my love and devotion to music. But the choice to be a full time musician was my own, a calling rather- after having tried juggling multiple things music kept drawing me to it, to the point where I could do nothing else.

Q You were very passionate about the Shahbagh movement. What

role do you think music plays in democracy?

A Music has always been the strongest and simplest form

of connecting people, spreading messages and bringing people together. Be it politics, philosophies or even my own heartbreaks, I’ve always expressed my opinions through my songs. So I think it’s up to us musicians to voice those opinions, especially when we feel betrayed or outraged or to simply unite people.

Q Describe your personal sense of style

A I like unique pieces but comfort is key. I get bored by the cloned

designer handbags that everyone carries and the same kameezes everyone wears. I’m quite random, my family says I’m picky - but I don’t like bling and recently started wearing colours.

Q Being in a family of empowered women, when you were close

to your daughters’ ages, were the struggles you faced harder? Would you say they have it easier now?

AIt was easier during our times. It was a barely born country and

people were less competitive. There were less struggles. The gender differences were not so prominent, as we rode rickshaws late into the night. I, myself spent time alone in TV stations until very late. Being from a cultural family, I had to struggle very little to establish myself compared to what I see now.

Q What are some of hurdles that you think the future generation of

musicians may have to face?

AOne big hurdle is piracy. Another is the aggression of Indian

artists. They have wider access to the world stage because of their musical production and distribution. Bollywood is known worldwide. Our channels and advertisement sectors are paying them highly for access to their channels, so we have to compete with that.

QHow do you think women in entertainment are perceived

today? How much has it changed?

3 They were treated with much respect in earlier days. If someone

is too eager to climb the fame ladder overnight, chances are, they won’t be treated right. Aspiring musicians should learn to wait for their turn. Not much has changed regarding that.

QDid you want your daughters to follow in your footsteps or was

it something that came completely naturally to them?

AI wanted Armeen to be a musician. That’s why I taught her the

classical numbers since she was three. She chose her own genre, her own career and her own style - her means of contributing to society.

A change for the goodBasics aren’t what they used to be

Welcome to the future. The idea of “bumming out” in sweats is no longer what it used to be and we are ever so thankful for it. Let’s go through the evolution of basics when it comes to fashion.

DenimSome women like to rock a pair of baggy, comfy jeans. Well guess what’s a thing now? “Boyfriend jeans.” No, we’re not talking about borrowing your man’s. Denim giants have a fit that is called that. The bonus? While they are super comfortable for that casual-cool look, they still accentuate your curves in a subtle way.

SneakersThe evolution of the humble old sneakers is probably the best one out of the lot. They are considered high-fashion now and every hot designer, as well as affordable brands has had a go at it. The main change is the hidden wedge heel that elevates you from anywhere from two to five inches while still being as wearable as ever. They come in the brightest colours, smoothest of suedes with a smattering of spikes or bling. Just remember not to wear them when you work out.

Gone are the days when we women had to borrow oversized T-shirts from our brothers or significant others and get lost in them. We now have the option of turning to slouchy, soft tees that are actually made with a woman’s shape in mind, taking the difference in the two genders’ chest area into account.

No, we’re not referring to the pseudo sexy, velour sweatsuits from juicy couture with a “juicy” stamp on your rear end that were ever popular a few years back. There were even similar versions available at Doja Market. We’re talking about sweat-shirts for ladies that are perfect for the whole new Sporty Spice-esque trend that is so very hot right now. They are cut differently to hug our bodies in all the right places without sacrificing any comfort when worn to lounge around in.

Baby,it’s cold outside

Christmas abroad is associated with things like pine trees, eggnog, Santa Claus, and of course, the ugly Christmas sweater, the ones with the patterns and the cutesy reindeer motifs. The average Bangladeshi doesn’t need Christmas as an excuse; we have plenty of those sweaters in our trunks. We call them typical winter wear. On the upside, they’re really comfortable, so before you go on a tossing spree, let’s look at three ways to give those practical, but tacky pieces an edgy update.

Denim delightWear the sweater over a solid colour button-down so that the collar peeks out, and then put on an oversized chambray or denim shirt on top. Leave the chambray shirt unbuttoned, and roll up the sleeves to wear it as a jacket over your skinny jeans. Add some cute booties and geek glasses and you’ve got your hipster chic on. The decaf sugar-free green tea soy latte (good grief!) is optional.

Flirty and flouncyIf the sweater is long enough, pop a bright statement necklace on, and get a solid colour skirt whose hemline ends about three to four inches below that of the sweater and pair it with leggings to wear it as a dress. You might need to cinch in your waist with a belt.

Playing with proportionsWith a form-fitting patterned sweater that’s a bit on the short side, you can team it with wide-legged trousers that flare out at the ankle, almost like bell-bottoms. If you are on the petite side, make sure the trousers end at your anklebone, and this will make your legs look like they go on for days. Throw on a nice infinity scarf and this look is even office-appropriate.

During winter, more and more men tend to wear their suit jackets as opposed

to wearing regular jackets or sweaters. Is it fashionably acceptable to wear suit jackets so casually?

It’s one of the more tricky situations in a man’s day-to-day style. It’s actually

perfectly fine to be wearing suit jackets mixed with casual trousers or dressy jeans. The only issue would be the blatant frequency in which you decide to wear the same jacket. Hopefully, that’s not the case. There are more casual or sport jackets you can wear too. Those can deliver better comfort and give you more freedom when it comes to the many combinations you can put together from your wardrobe. As for the suit jacket, you can also do so much with it, until it becomes unflattering. Throw on dress shirts or high quality polo shirts if you choose to stick to the more sophisticated cut jackets.

When I wear a cardigan or a similar style sweater over my dress shirt or polo,

it makes me look fatter than I actually am. How can I avoid this?

It really depends on how thick or thin your layers are. They can be the thinnest

and lightest pieces in your outfit, but more layers will make you look larger than you actually are. One of the easiest tricks in style is to keep the layers to a minimal, and don’t be timid in tucking your shirt in. As mentioned many times before, polo shirts and dress shirts alike are more fitted than they used to be. It hugs your body to present a slimmer silhouette so you won’t have to worry about looking too fat.

What women don’t want

| Mahmood Hossain

Why, guys, why?

Play your cards

Okay, you shouldn’t completely get rid of your wallet. Just hide it away somewhere like in your day-to-day work bag. This isn’t just your winter item, it’s an accessory for all seasons. The card holder isn’t new either, but it’s more popular now than it has ever been. A card holder, as mentioned before, is a must in the modern day world of men’s fashion. More importantly, it’s about keeping things organised and prioritised.

Not only do they come in beautiful leather, there’s plenty of card holders of the metal type as well. They’re sleek and easy to carry around without making your

pockets bulge. You can still carry your money bag or wallet, but keep it hidden away safely in your bag. What you should keep in your card holder are the necessities. Think about your work ID,

driver’s license, national ID, and debit card or primary credit card. That’s just about all the important cards in one place. Let’s not forget a couple of your contact or business cards for networking purposes.

And the best thing about this magnificent and convenient invention is that it comes in all different styles and price ranges. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a card holder. Well, if you have

While there is tremendous pressure on us ladies to look our best at all times, it’s time you men know that it wouldn’t kill you to make an effort. No, this does not only apply to the metro man or us trying to morph a grizzly bear into a metro man, this goes for all of you. We’re watching you!

Troubled toesThe wonderfully groomed man who usually writes this column has repeatedly told men over the last year to avoid wearing sandals on dates. Most women, however don’t mind you guys sporting sandals now and then. The most important factor when it comes to baring those toes is to make sure they aren’t gnarly. That is a huge turn off. Mangled toenails that are way too long with an inch of dirt embedded underneath? Yuck. Take care of your feet. It’s not necessary to go get a pro pedicure.

Just wash and brush those babies clean in the shower daily.

Pulling off the polosWomen love football too, (well, mostly the players) and we usually think you look pretty darn hot in those team jerseys. Sadly, it’s not the same deal when it comes to polos.

Those horses on your chest seem to keep growing in size and are almost obnoxious. Another polo very, very hard to pull off is the one with what seems like a sash around your body that resembles one that a female pageant winner may wear. If you’re not rocking the hardest of abs, beware of all fitted polos. No matter how progressive those bright, neon colours may make you appear, a chubby gut is all we see.

Button upGuess what? We have absolutely no issues with what you may be sprouting on your chest - whether it resembles a dense, plush carpet available in Elephant Road or

just a few, lost strays. What does indeed set off warning signs are the men who seem to forget how to button up. We’re not asking you to choke yourself by doing up the top-most button, but for the love of everything good, please don’t leave your modesty at home and unleash those curlies on our eyes. What is worse is highlighting your greasy fur with a thick gold chain or two. Some even go as far as to rock pendants on those chains. It’s not the 70s, so stop trying to channel John Travolta.

the money, why the hell not? In truth, a card holder is all about functionality before it takes a queue in the style department. But even if you find yourself wanting to carry cash with you, we don’t recommend it, you can always carry a money clip. Unlike poker, it’s all about playing your cards and not the man so keep them in a safe and easy to access place.

Recently everyone has been asking me if I am tired. So I’m guessing I must look weary.

How can I fake looking more awake?

Sure, you can fake it temporarily, but you know that not getting enough sleep will

take a toll on your face - an unpleasant one. If you’re not into wearing any make-up, this may be the time to dabble in a few products. Start the day by using a gentle exfoliant on your face. Alternate between cold and hot water to get the blood flowing and putting some colour back on those cheeks. The next step is to get the red out of those peepers with some eye drops. Store your face cream in the fridge. Massage into skin in upward, circular motions. This should take care of the canvas that is your face. You don’t have to wear foundation, but a little concealer under the eyes won’t hurt. Follow with a beige-champagne eye shadow, which will really brighten up your eye area. Two coats of mascara, a swipe of blush, some gloss and you’re ready to go.

I know it’s winter, but I still get severely sweaty. What can I do?

Experts worldwide have been advising Sweaty Bettys to apply antiperspirant before

going to bed, as this gives it more time to absorb into your pores and fight sweat. This is probably not the best solution for the long run. Visit a specialist to see if you may have hyperhidrosis, a condition that means your sweat glands are overactive. There are a few medical treatments for this dilemma.

Your name is not Helen of Troy and your face did not set sail to a thousand ships. And that’s perfectly fine

Everyone has their likes and dislikes. But the general consensus agrees, some of you take it a step too far. Some of you, don’t do enough. Through the many women I’ve styled, there have been several misconceptions of what men find attractive.

Reality bitesOwn up to your flaws and accept them. If make-up is such an important part of your life, you’re heading for the wrong direction. All it takes is to simply highlight your more attractive features. It’s okay to not look perfect. Those endless runway shows and the intimidating angels of Victoria’s Secret are not you. A bikini wax or not, you’re beautiful in your own way. Ladies, take a step back and start from the basics. Be comfortable in your own skin.

The real youNow that the lecture is over, take notes. Ladies, there are a few key things you might be doing wrong. Remember, beauty goes beyond the state of your face.• If you aren’t a veteran in the

world of heels, please do not attempt to sport four-inch heels.

In fact, your safest bet is to wear kitten-heels – it’s the shortest of the lot, and you won’t be toppling over. A good posture contributes to better beauty practices.

• That colour on your lips isn’t as hot as you think. Just because it looks amazing on your friend, doesn’t go the same for you. Don’t be too upset

if your guy is distracted by her lips than yours. Find the appropriate shade, before you pucker up. And for the love of God, no duck faces. • Do not, under any circumstances, decide to experiment with your hair, Beyonce. All those YouTube tutorials on beauty and hair might seem fun, but get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. If you really want something new, make subtle style changes with your hairdresser.• Just because your man has a crush on a celebrity doesn’t mean you should beautify yourself by buying the same products she uses. Those highlights in your hair and that cake face you’ve got going on are scarier than Ananta Jalil perusing through the bra section at Macy’s.• Even if you’re

doing it right, applying all those beauty products should be used wisely, depending on the occasion. The same look you used to rock at a party isn’t the same one you put on when meeting the parents, unless you’re performing on stage with the cast of Moulin Rouge.

Christmas drinks As slushy as it can get

| Pragya Rahman

The most wonderful time of the year is finally upon us and the best way to kick start your holiday festivities is by serving up classic Christmas cocktails. Dhaka tends to get quite chilly this time of year and if you’re having friends and family over for a few rounds of Christmas cheer then you will love what we have in stock for you.

EggnogLet’s start with the age-old and traditional Christmas drink - Eggnog.

Ingredients• 4 cups of milk• 12 egg yolks• 1 cup sugar (or more according

to your taste) • 3-4tsp vanilla essence• Grated/ground nutmeg• Grated/ground cinnamon

DirectionsOver medium heat, whisk the milk and sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved (for about 2 minutes); add 3-4 teaspoons of vanilla essence for flavour. Whisk the egg yolks in a large bowl and add the mixture to the pan. Keep stirring on low heat for around 15 minutes until the back of your spoon is coated; do not let your mixture simmer or boil. You can

either serve this drink warm and garnish it with ground or grated nutmeg and cinnamon or refrigerate it, cool it down and then drink it. If you want to make it a bit thicker and heavier, you could always add cream to the mixture. Alternatively, if you want a variation of the classic eggnog, you could always add chocolate syrup to it or strawberry or blueberry compote, frozen berries or even crushed oreos would do. Be as creative as you want.

SnowballYou can enjoy the last one and pretend that you’re in the North Pole, while sipping on something that truly defines winter. The little ones will love this one. It’s called the Snowball.

Ingredients1tbsp vanilla ice cream Pineapple juice Sprite

DirectionsFirst have a glass ready that’s preferably over 12-ounces (a highball glass is your best bet). You will need to turn your vanilla ice cream into a runny mixture, but not too runny, it’ll need to be a little thick too. After your vanilla ice cream is in your glass, add pineapple juice leaving just enough space for a top up of sprite. Stir in the mixture of vanilla ice cream and pineapple juice. Top up with sprite, but with extreme care so that the contents of your glass do not overflow. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done, sit back, take a sip and enjoy!

Baked Chicken Roast With some irresistible sides smeared in BBQ sauce and Mozzarella cheese

| Tasmia Momin

As the countdown starts for December 25, colours of red, green and gold knock on everyone’s door, and so starts the countless list of festive foods. When it comes to festivals like Christmas, one can’t resist the tempting smell that swerves past the neighbourhood.

English styleBaked Chicken Roast

Brining the chickenIt seems like a lot of work but brining chicken can make your end product so much better, you can only understand once you have done it the right way.Brining the chicken not only makes it more tender and juicier but also helps you flavour your chicken the way you want.

• 2kg chicken• ¾ cup salt• ½ cup sugar• 3.5-litres of water• Additional flavours like a French

dressing, herbs or spices, etc.

Using half the amount of water, dissolve your salt in water by heating, then add the other half (cold) water and bring it to room temperature. Keep the chicken submerged in your prepared brine for 6 to 8 hours or at max, overnight in the fridge. After brining, rinse the chicken well in water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Preparing your chicken for roastingPlease note that you do not need to marinate the chicken any further.

All you need is to prepare a sauce to brush onto the chicken.• ½ cup tomato ketchup• ¼ cup BBQ sauce• ¼ cup soy sauce

Mix all ingredients thoroughly with a brush.Stuff your chicken with a fragrant lemon and a few cloves of garlic. This will enhance the flavours.Tie up the legs and wings of the chicken.Preheat your oven to 170-degrees Celsius.Brush butter onto the chicken skin and then the prepared sauce all over the chicken and roast it for around 2 hours, brushing it again and again with the sauce in intervals of 15-minutes, flipping it twice meanwhile.

Stir Fry Vegetables

Ingredients• A glug of oil• 2 green chillies, halved• 1 cup of cauliflower• 1 cup broccoli• 1 carrot• Handful of 3-inch cut long beans• ½ of a capsicum• 1tsp chopped garlic• A splash of soy sauce• Black pepper

Blanching your vegetablesBlanching brightens the colour and enhances the flavour and texture of vegetables.Dunk the cauliflower in salted boiling

water, let it come to a boil. Cook it for about a minute or two, and immediately plunge it in ice-cold water. Repeat it with the broccoli, carrot and long beans separately.Heat the wok on high heat and add a bit of oil. Add the green chillies and the vegetables one by one without letting the temperature in the wok fall drastically. Flip and toss the vegetables or stir for about 5 to 6 minutes until the vegetables soften. Then add the chopped up garlic and soy sauce. Stir for another minute and sprinkle with black pepper.

Quick and easy Baked Potato

Ingredients• Some big round potatoes• Salted boiling water• Butter• Mozzarella cheese• Salt and pepper

Half boil the potatoes in salted boiling water or boil it until almost done, if you are running out of time. Brush the potatoes with butter and season with salt and pepper. Place the potatoes in the oven over high heat and bake it for about 30 minutes. When done, split it open and top it with grated mozzarella cheese and sprinkle with black pepper.

Mushroom and Capsicum GravyIn a hot skillet, add a glug of oil, garlic, mushroom and capsicum. Add the remaining sauce, previously prepared while roasting the chicken and cook it for about 2 minutes. Place the chicken on a serving dish along with all the sides and tuck in.
