didusem astfel buzna nepoftit, tocmai mi pregi-team si mi. retrag, cind Holmes mi trase repede

l.Aln camera sl lncnlse usa ln urma mea.

-Nici ,., p.rt."i si vii intr-un moment mai ni-merit, dragul meu \7atson, imi spuse el cordial.

-Mi temeam ci esti ocupat.

- PiJ sunt, ;i chiar foarte ocupat.

-Atunci ag putea a;tepta alituri.

-Citu;i de pugin! Domnule \filson, domnulacesta mi-a fost partener gi ajutor in multe dincazurile in care am avut cel mai mare succes, si numi. indoiesc ci ne va fi de rnare folos si in cazul

dumneavoastri.

I had called upon my friend, Mr. SherlockHolmes, one day in the autumn of last year and

found him in deep conversation with a very stout,florid-faced, elderly gendeman with fiery red hair.

\7ith an apology for my intrusion, I was about towithdraw when Holmes pulled me abruptly intothe room and closed the door behind me.

"You could not possibly have come at a bettertime, my dear'W'atson," he said cordially.

"I was afraid that you were engaged.""So I am. Very much so.""Then I can wait in the next room.""Not at all. This gentleman, Mr. lWilson, has

been my partner and helper in many of my mostsuccessful cases, and I have no doubt that he willbe of the utmost use to me in yours also."

The stout gendeman half rose from his chair and

gaye a bob of greeting, with a quick little ques-

tioning glance from his small fat-encircled eyes.

-Yezi daci stai comod pe canapelugS", imi spuse

Holmes si, li.sA.ndu-se lnapoi in fotoliu, i;i im-bini. vArfurile degetelor, conform obiceiului sluc6.nd era intr-o dispozigie meditativS..

"Tiy the settee," said Holmes, relapsing into his

armchair and putting his fingertips together, as

was his custom when in.iudicial moods. "I know, rny dear'Watson, that you share my love of all thatis bizarre and outside the conventions and hum-rlrum routine of everyday life. You have shownyour relish for it by the enthusiasm which. has

prompted you to chronicle, and, if you will excuse

my saying so, somewhat to embellish so many of myown little adventures."

"Your cases have indeed been of the greatest

interest to me," I observed."You will remember that I remarked the other

day, just before we went into the very simple prob-lcm presented by Miss Mary Sutherland, that forstrange effects and extraordinary combinations we

must go to life itself, which is always far more dar-

ing than any efFort of the imagination.""A proposition which I took the liberty of

doubting."
