About Quire Cleveland With the vision of building global harmony through performance and education, Quire Cleveland is dedicated to exploring, preserving, and breathing new life into nine centuries of extraordinary choral music.

Quire Cleveland is a professional chamber choir established in 2008 to explore the vast and timeless repertoire of choral music over the last nine centuries. The members of Quire are highly-trained musicians, collectively representing 500 years of choral experience. Quire Cleveland plays a part in the rich musical milieu of northeast Ohio by enhancing the larger choral community and cultivating the highest artistic standards. Now in its eleventh season, Quire Cleveland is managed by a working volunteer Board of Directors. Through concerts, recordings, broadcasts, and more than one million views on YouTube, Quire reaches people in 217 countries around the world. Since 2008, Quire Cleveland has earned both critical and popular acclaim for their “stunning panache” (Cleveland-Classical.com) and “rich mosaic of music” (Early Music America Magazine), as they “combine stylistic truth with vocal elegance” (Cleveland Plain Dealer).

About the Artistic Director Countertenor Jay White joined Quire Cleveland in 2012 and as-sumed the position of Artistic Director in July of 2018. Jay has held choral positions with ensembles that include the Washington National Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, Grace Cathedral San Francisco, Maryland Handel Festival, Washington Bach Consort, Folger Consort, Spire, Carmel Bach Festival Chorale, and Apollo’s Fire Singers. Sought after as an interpreter of repertoire from me-dieval to baroque and beyond, he has appeared at national and international early music festivals. In all, as a choral singer, soloist, and chamber singer, he has participated in more than 1,400 perfor-mances around the globe.

Jay sang eight seasons with the internationally acclaimed ensemble, Chanticleer, with which he traveled to more than 40 states and 15 foreign countries, performing more than 150 concerts each year. A unique aspect of his time with Chanticleer was engagement with a vast amount and diver-sity of repertoire, from chant to contemporary, interaction with more than a dozen living compos-ers, and numerous US and world premieres of innovative new works for the choral ensemble. No stranger to the recording process, Jay can be heard on more than 45 albums, including three nom-inations and two GRAMMY® Award-winning recordings with Chanticleer. He has been heard on National Public Radio and Public Radio International programs such as Harmonia, St. Paul Sunday, Around New York, Weekend Edition, Performance Today, and The Today Show, as well as radio and television broadcasts in more than 10 countries.

Jay received his training at the Early Music Institute at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Mu-sic and the University of Maryland School of Music and Maryland Opera Studio. He holds Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees, with studies in vocal performance, musicology and performance practice, and pedagogy and vocology. Jay has served on the faculties of the University of Maryland, University of Delaware, and DePauw University. He is currently Professor of Voice at the Kent State University Hugh A. Glauser School of Music with a full studio of music education, vocal performance, and musical theatre voice students, along with courses in diction, language, opera, and related undergraduate and graduate subjects in the voice curriculum. Jay has also served as Music Director for the Kent State Opera since 2012, working with productions of literature from the 17th to 21st centuries.

Director’s Message

Inspiration and Introspection

With our title Ave Maria: England’s Rose, it isn’t too difficult to discern our focus. Our offering takes us from foundation to flourishing of the English Renaissance. The choice for such repertoire honoring the mother of Christ comes from a childhood memory. My mother wrote a children’s Easter cantata when I was around 8 years old. The moral of the short piece was, “Without Easter, there would be no Christmas.” My young mind found this concept a bit challenging. I kept insisting there couldn’t be an Easter without Christmas. After all, Jesus had to be born first, right? And in my school year, Christmas was always celebrated BEFORE Easter!

As time passed, I began my work as a professional chorister. I periodically pondered just how my mother’s inter-pretation of the prophecy of Christ’s death and resurrection laid the foundation for my personal understanding of the Christian faith. Not surprisingly, she was right; the fulfillment of the prophecy at Easter is the sole reason for the celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas.

The focus on Jesus’ role in this grand story has been told through countless settings of the Gospels in both words and music. No choral season is truly void of Handel’s Messiah or a cantata or Passion of J. S. Bach. It was during a rehearsal for one of these masterpieces where I said in an audible voice that Jesus must be the one human who has had the most music written about him in all of the western canon. Within a beat or two, the internal presence of my mother’s voice said, “Without Mary, there would be no Christ.”

Throughout this performance, we will travel from the musical foundations of the English Renaissance (Dunsta-ble and Power) to its greatest heights (Byrd and Philips). Each composer offers confirmation of the importance of Mary’s role as the mother of Christ, intermediary for his followers, and claim as the second human for whom so much music is written.

I invite you to become familiar with these unique and powerful texts. You may choose to do so prior to your hearing the works or perhaps while experiencing them. Listen to how Dunstable uses complex rhythms in three-part harmony to excite the soul to praise. Glory in the expressive and expansive polyphony of Parsons as he conveys veneration of the Virgin. Find comfort in the three settings of Ave verum corpus that again remind us of Mary’s essential role in shaping the story of Jesus.

Thank you, Mom, for continuing to inspire the work you have supported since my 1973 debut of Jesus loves me, this I know. To all those who give motherly devotion and care, we send our loudest AVES!

Gratitude and Generosity

Quire Cleveland is honored to continue the work of our founding Artistic Director Emeritus, Dr. Ross Duffin, and Executive Director Emerita, Dr. Beverly Simmons, who retired from Quire Cleveland in 2018. Generous contributions to the Duffin-Simmons fund have facilitated Quire’s transition through the 2018–2019 concert season with new artistic and administrative leadership. With funding from the Cuyahoga Arts and Culture (CAC), the Ohio Arts Council (OAC), and the wonderful response to our recent donation appeal, we are able offer this, and select future concerts, for FREE. We invite you to consider contributions through the specific sponsorship opportunities described in this program. This will enable us to expand our current 2019–2020 season of two projects to three! To entice you, more in-formation for Quire’s next season may be found on our new website (www.quirecleveland.org) and our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/quirecleveland).

For the most up-to-date news, consider subscribing to our mailing list. You may do so in person during intermission, at the end of the concert, or online using the instructions below*. As an incentive, return a completed subscription form to one of our volunteers at the CD sales table, buy a CD, and you’ll get the choice of another recording for FREE. If you are already on our mailing list, we haven’t left you out of the fun. You can purchase a CD for $10 and your second is only $5!

Speaking of volunteers, Quire runs off of the tireless work of such people and we thank them all! From our all-volunteer working board to our concert staff, we are a strong army of givers. We would be de-lighted to have you volunteer YOUR skills. Please contact us at [email protected] or speak to a board member. A great way for you to excite our volunteers right now is to fill out the survey on the back of this program and give it (perhaps with a donation) to one of them as you depart.

It is for the betterment of society that the arts are experienced and shared. Without a doubt, the reason for Quire Cleveland’s existence is simple: YOU the listeners! It is for our audiences and the greater good that we present our vocal art.

GRATIAS TIBI!
