  • Just like the water cycle, there is a cycle that shows the formation, breakdown and recycling of rocks. There are three types of rock: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Rocks can change from one type to another, a process described as the rock cycle. This occurs over varying time scales.

Igneous rocks form when molten rock (called magma), which is found inside the Earth, cools down and solidifies. Examples of igneous rocks are granite and pumice.

Sedimentary rocks are formed when pressure forces smaller particles (called sediments) to be compacted and cemented together with chemicals. Examples of sedimentary rocks are sandstone, coal and limestone.

Metamorphic rocks form when other rocks are exposed to high heat and pressure. For example, limestone (a sedimentary rock) can be changed into marble.

Weathering and erosion also play a part in the rock cycle. This can include acid rain, temperature changes, rocks hitting one another or plants and animals growing in the soil. Events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can also cause changes.

think, page turner... The 2013 Prime Ministers Literary Award for Poetry showcases high doses of humour, satire and self-deprecation; explorations of mortality, of the political, of deeply felt spirituality. Language is at times beautiful, lyrical and highly stylised, and at others, direct, unvarnished and harsh.

Thank you to Farhan Ishraq, Student from Glen Waverley for your great idea! If you have a suggestion for our Curriculum Cards submit your idea at www.avantcard.com.au/index.php/resources/curriculum-projectInformation source: www.biologymad.com/resources/EyeStructureWS.pdf

Conjunctiva Is a thin covering of epithelial cells that protects the cornea against damage by friction (tears help the process by lubricating the surface).Cornea Is the transparent, curved front of the eye which helps to converge the light rays entering the eye.Sclera Is an opaque, fibrous, protective outer structure. It is soft connective tissue, and the spherical shape of the eye is maintained by the pressure of the liquid inside. It provides attachment surfaces for eye musclesChoroid Has a network of blood vessels to supply nutrients to the cells and remove waste products. It is pigmented that makes the retina appear black, thus preventing reflection within the eyeball.Iris Is a pigmented muscular structure consisting of an inner ring of circular muscle and an outer layer of radial muscle. Its function is to help control the amount of light entering the eye so that too much light does not damage the retina, but enough light enters to allow a person to see.Pupil Is a hole in the middle of the iris where light is allowed to continue its passage. In bright light it is constricted and in dim light it is dilated.Lens Is a transparent, flexible, curved structure. Its function is to focus incoming light rays onto the retina using its refractive properties.Retina Is a layer of sensory neurones, the key structures being photoreceptors (rod and cone cells) which respond to light. Relay and sensory neurones pass impulses along the optic nerve to the brain.Fovea A part of the retina that is directly opposite the pupil and contains only cone cells. It is responsible for good visual acuity (good resolution).Blind spot Is where the bundle of sensory fibres form the optic nerve; it contains no light-sensitive receptors.Vitreous humour Is a transparent, jelly-like mass located behind the lens. It acts as a suspension for the lens so that the delicate lens is not damaged. It helps to maintain the shape of the posterior chamber of the eyeball.Aqueous humour Helps to maintain shape in the anterior chamber of the eye.
