  • vLab Backup Environment OverviewvLab Backup Environment Overview

This vLab contains single node Avamar server (Avamar Virtual Edition) as well as virtual Data Domainappliance. These appliances will be used to perform backup and restore tasks using Avamar Softwarefunctionality.

Certain configuration tasks may be required during the course of this exercise in order to access theresources involved.

The environment consists of 4 Exchange 2013 Servers. EX2013-1, EX2013-2 and EX2013-3 are DAGmembers. The EX2013-W is a witness server that is used as a cluster resource for the DAG. They each havedatabases that are actively mounted on each server respectively, plus passive copies that are hosted on theother members. In this vLab you will backup all passive databases using the Avamar Exchange Federationfeature, then restore them using the Avamar Management Console. You will also restore granular items allthe way into the mailboxes to show how efficient the GLR feature can make it for a Backup Administrator.

This demo environment consists of three MS Exchange 2013 servers in DAG configuration.

    Server names are EX2013-1, EX2013-2, EX2013-3.

Each server has 6 mailbox databases DBEX13-[1-3]DB[1-6], default active-passive database copy allocationbetween servers is the following:

    DBEX13-1DB[1-6] - active on EX2013-1, passive copies on EX2013-2 and EX2013-3

    DBEX13-2DB[1-6] - active on EX2013-2, passive copies on EX2013-1 and EX2013-3

DBEX13-3DB[1-6] - active on EX2013-3, no passive copies on other servers

This layout allows to use EX2013-3 as a standalone server with no replica DB copies and at the same time allthree servers EX2013-[1-3] can be used to demonstrate federated backup scenarios
