Service: It’s more than just a face.

Safety in a nutshell:

Planning for performance.BGV A3 inspections have to be adapted to each WTG’s idiosyn-crasies. Even something as basic as the placement of electrical

components can vary widely from turbine to turbine. That is why every inspection follows an elaborate turbine-specific schedule. It dictates when and where to inspect each of the 150-plus measuring points, and what equipment to use.

All the measurement instruments have a database function, allowing seamless, detailed documentation to be prepared for every individual WTG.

• Maintains the safety of the

electrical systems in WTGs

• Commits to the legal

requirements and obligations

for safety inspections

• Prevents serious accidents due

to electrical defects

• Reduces the risk of operator liability

• First-ever BGV A3 inspection procedure tailored

specifi cally to WTGs

• Fully documented including a detailed description

and optional photos

• Inspection recommended every four years

• Currently available for 1.5 MW GE®, Nordex®, Fuhrländer®

and Repower® units and 2 MW Vestas® units (V80/V90)

The No. 1 duo:ABO Wind and Availon.

“Oh, it’ll be fi ne.” Sophisticated electrics are packed into WTGs, but are rarely inspected thoroughly – even though inspections have been required by law for years. It’s a miracle more accidents haven’t occured. Service technicians often encounter loose contacts, abraded cables and even missing residual current circuit breakers.

If you only cross your fingers …

… they might get burned.

Electrical accidents can lead to severe burns or even death. No wonder the German Institution for Statutory Accident Insurance and Prevention (BG) demands strict compliance with BGV A3, its accident prevention regulation. Operators unable to prove compliance can expect no clemency from the BG and will be fully liable for any injuries that might occur.

Even if the victim acted carelessly. But who goes thru the trouble ofinspecting kilometers of cables, testing 150-plus measuring points in a wind turbine and complying with the strict requirements of BGV A3? We do.

Developing the procedure for a BGV A3 inspection is at least as complicated as the wind turbine electrical components themselves. Especially when it is pioneering work. Availon and ABO Wind’s solution is the fi rst-ever BGV A3 inspection designed specifi cally for wind turbine electrical systems.

This was an enormous challenge. The partners had to integrate Availon’s profound systems knowledge with ABO Wind’s special expertise while consulting closely with the BG and VDE. Not only that, but their engineers had to be trained to handle the special challenges of inspecting WTGs.

For example, the only way to reach some of the 150-plus measuring points – such as in the rotor hub – is by climbing onto the nacelle.

Safety pays dividends.

Profits are obviously not the primary goal of safety measures and requirements. But they can be a nice side benefit. During BGV A3 inspections, installation defects often occur that, otherwise wouldhave remained hidden for a long time – until they caused the turbine to fail.

The result: downtime, repair time and lower yield. In other words, BGV A3 inspections are good for your safety record – and your bottom line.
