Information Reference :

Information in this program is supplied specifically by the manufacturers or from the reference of Diesel engines in AP- 42, based on a 435 hp engine using road grade diesel.

Diesel Powered Commercial Motor Vehicles

“The Facts”Most are idled on average 9 hours per day Most use up to 1.5 gallons per hour of fuel to idle Idling is the most damaging mode to the diesel engine of the truck Commercial Motor Vehicles are still the most economical way to ship items

Diesel TrucksOn average, a fleet of

150 trucks can create:

VOC’s 6.375 tons/yr

CO 47.685 tons/yr

Nox 28.6875 tons/yr

CO2 52,555 tons/yr

Sox 1081 tons/yr

PM10 1161 tons/yr

Diesel Trucks

Can be significant contributors to pollution. Especially when idling

Can generate less pollution with Auxiliary power units (APU’s)

APU’s are devices that serve to keep the Diesel trucks off the idle mode.

More and more states are passing non-idle laws

Page 6: Auxiliary Power Units

APU’s

Technology started in Airplanes and RV’s

Used to control the climate in the cabin

Come from multiple manufacturers

Can be Diesel or Battery powered

Have variable conveniences available such as generator options

Page 7: Auxiliary Power Units

APU’s

Wired into the truck cab allow the driver to regulate the temperature.

Diesel units use on average less than 0.1 gallons per hour

Emissions (g/h)

Trucks can reduce the Volatile Organic Compounds, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides and Carbon Dioxide produced when using these units, by significant amounts.

The Bonus!

Cuts air pollution to minimal amounts

Improves community relations by showing stewardship and environmental responsibility

Cuts noise pollution

Cuts risk of fines and penalties for drivers

Page 11: Auxiliary Power Units

Other Bonuses

Extends life of enginesExtends maintenance intervals (oil change intervals 25,000 miles to 30,000 miles, saves 30 gallons of waste oil yearly )Reduces waste disposal, and labor costHigher resale value of Truck

Helps company to retain drivers

APU units use ozone- friendly refrigerants

APU life is about 10 years

Potential help on cost

Each unit can cost upwards of $3,600 installed

Currently, there is a Bill on the floor of the US Rep. Called “Idling Reduction Tax Credit Act of 2004”, which would give owners a break of $3,500.00.

Conclusion

Together with other programs and ideas, the trucking industry can lose the stigma of being a “necessary pollution evil”.

EPA has developed the ‘Smart-Way Program’ to help facilities with fleets improve on technologies.
