Autumn And Winter is about many things--loneliness, mid-life, aging, infertility, destitution, addiction, and above all else, family. It is at once quintessentially Swedish and universally human. I was unaware of the playwright, Lars Norén, until my friend and colleague Em Svenninger suggested that I read his plays. My gratitude to her for this is boundless. In this play, a family gets together for a monthly dinner, and a daughter’s relentless pursuit of the past reveals life long secrets and resentments. Like a modern day Electra, the play is a cautionary tale about how even small lies can infect and devastate the internal foundation of a family.

Director’s Note

A Note from the Artistic Director

We are so proud to be sharing our 30th Anniversary with you! What a thrill to start the season with the U.S. premiere of Autumn and Winter by Lars Norén. Widely regarded as the greatest contemporary playwright in Sweden, he is often compared to Edward Albee in his ability to examine marriage, family, and the struggle to live in contemporary society. In Autumn and Winter he explores, with a poets grace, the harsh and sometimes comic search for connection, truth, understanding and love that two older parents and their adult children attempt to scale during their monthly family dinner. We hope you will be excited and moved by being intro-duced to Lars Noréns’ courageous work.
