Dementia friendly community Dementia in Leeds It is estimated that there are 8,400 people with dementia in Leeds, of whom 4,000 have been diagnosed.

····························································································

Towards a dementia friendly city Leeds City Council has signed up to making the city a ‘dementia friendly community’. The Council recognises that dementia is a long-term condition, support must be co-ordinated through all stages of a person’s ’dementia journey’ and family members and carers are often the most important people to involve in decisions.

The next steps for the city include:

Supporting stronger involvement of people with dementia, families and carers

The formation of Leeds Dementia Action Alliance Dementia awareness training for front-line staff A ‘flagship’ dementia-friendly project in a supermarket

or other well-used building Developing more ‘inter-generational work’ with schools

See the full strategy, Living well with dementia in Leeds online at bit.ly/1bye9wF

Bramley Elderly Action 0113 236 1644 www.bramleyea.org.uk

I’m a BEA Volunteer Kirsten Miller 1. What’s your volunteer role? I volunteer as an escort, helping out on

Thursdays for the lunch club and shopping trips.

2. How long have you been a volunteer? I joined BEA in April 2012.

3. Why did you get involved? I’m self-employed, working from home, and I wanted to have a change of scenery now and again and do some good at the same time.

4. Three words that sum up BEA for you? Friendly, dedicated, lifeline.

5. What do you get out of volunteering? I very much enjoy my weekly stints helping out on the minibus. I’ve made some good friends among the members and it gives me a chance to have a break from work and get involved in the community.

6. What else do you like doing? I love what I do – I’m a polymer clay artist.

7. Where were you born? Glasgow

8. What’s your favourite film? 1986 film, ‘Labyrinth‘.

9. And your favourite book? ‘Daughter of the Forest‘ by Juliet Marillier.

10. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself I was the Scottish Junior Archery Champion in 1986, and I represented Scotland in a number of international archery competitions!

See www.bramleyea.org.uk for more volunteers’ stories

Meet the PCSO Leanne Broadhead – Police Community Support Officer Leanne, who’s lived all her life on the edge of Wakefield, has been a PCSO for about 5 years.

PCSOs are often people’s first point of contact with police, helping with issues like low-level crime such as anti-social behaviour, car crime and criminal damage. They are trained in First Aid and security advice, so can go to people’s homes, do assessments, and advise on how to improve home security.

Leanne, whose beat covers Bramley, Stanningley and Rodley, enjoys meeting people and working in the community. She pops in to schools, old people’s homes and community centres, and is a regular visitor at the BEA drop-in. Leanne says older people are always particularly friendly and helpful, more

likely than younger people to be involved in a neighbourhood watch, and more likely to be home during the day, and see what’s going on.

Leanne often pops in to see older people who have been burgled, to offer reassurance and have a chat. She lets them know what’s going on in the community, and where else they can get help. She is one of 11 PCSOs on the Bramley beat, based in Pudsey police station.
