Black LabsThe Labrador retriever is America’s most popular canine breed. He’s a very loyal and loving companion, as well as an outstanding working dog. I wanted to show the joy and affection in the Lab’s expression, which makes the breed so endearing. Although black is the most common color, yellow and chocolate Labs have become quite popular in recent years.

A friend who has been an avid big-game hunter for many years is passionate about Africa. Over time he has acquired many vintage firearms

and equipment, which he takes on safari. He allowed me to borrow some of these from his collection in order to create this large oil. Each nick and

scrape is an intimate record of a particular moment in time, and a window of curiosity and wonder into the experience that created it.

This oil sketch was a preliminary for an oil on canvas that I was commissioned to paint for a client who has hunted in Africa. Those who hunt the Big Five say that everything seems to happen in slow motion when confronted by a dangerous animal.

The Sporting Life is a celebration of gundogs and horses, hunting and fishing as expressed through the rich and exuberant paintings of Joseph Sulkowski. Acclaimed as one of America’s premier dog

and sporting artists, Sulkowski shares his personal conversation with the outdoor life in a style of Poetic Realism. Influenced and guided by the hands of the Old Masters, he creates fluid brushstrokes that imbue his canvases with a compelling blend of light, atmosphere, and spatial effects that bring his passion for the sporting life into vivid focus for the viewer.

Whether it’s still-lifes, dog paintings, or scenes of hunters and anglers, Joseph Sulkowski derives his inspiration from personal contact with the natural world. He carries out his visions through a lifelong discipline to his craft, in which hand-ground paints, carefully prepared oils and varnishes, and handcrafted linen canvases and gessoed panels play a vital role in the quality of each work of art.

All this and more about the immensely gifted artist is detailed by author Brooke Chilvers, one of the foremost experts on wildlife and sporting art. Altogether, the large-format, 240-page book features more than 180 paintings and dozens of sketches.

Acclaimed wildlife artist Lynn Bogue Hunt, who illustrated more national magazine covers than

any other artist in history, is the focus of a beautiful new coffee-table book from Sporting Classics.

Angler, hunter, and above all artist, Lynn Bogue Hunt was America’s most popular and prolific outdoor illustrator of the mid-20th century—the “Golden Age” of the American outdoors. He painted a record 106

covers for Field & Stream; illustrated dozens of books on waterfowling, upland bird hunting, and saltwater fishing; designed the 1939-’40 Federal Duck Stamp; and was described by his friend Ernest Hemingway as “the finest painter of game birds that we have in America.”

Lynn Bogue Hunt—Angler, Hunter, Artist showcases the complete collection of Hunt paintings acquired by New Jersey sportsman Paul Vartanian. Not only is it the world’s largest collection of Hunt paintings, drawings, and memorabilia, but it’s the largest and most complete collection of the work of any major sporting artist.

Along with a fascinating text by Sporting Classics Senior Editor Tom Davis, this big 9x12-inch book features some 150 iconic images that will thrill Hunt fans and be a revelation to those less familiar with this legendary artist.

The Greatest Quail Hunting Book EverIt’s not just the title; it’s the perfect description of its contents.

A big covey of great American authors are showcased in this fascinating, 368-page anthology featuring 38 stories from those

halcyon days when sporting gentlemen pursued the noble bobwhite quail with their favorite shotguns and elegant canine companions.

The book opens with compelling tales by the literary giants from quail hunting’s golden era, including Nash Buckingham, Robert Ruark, Havilah Babcock, Archibald Rutledge, and Horatio Bigelow.

The second section presents reminiscences by sporting scribes of the modern era, among them Jack O’Connor, Gene Hill, Joseph Greenfield, Dave Henderson, and Mike Gaddis. The third section is comprised of unforgettable short stories on quail hunting and bird dogs by James Street, Bob Matthews, Dan O’Brien, and Caroline Gordon.

The next recoil seemed more violent than the first. The muzzles reared to a nearly vertical angle, causing the butt to slip off

my shoulder. For an instant I fought to hold onto the rifle but then regained my grip. The second hole missed the center of the square by only an inch. There was applause and more applause, and a kiss from my wife.

I had fired the mighty .700 Nitro.

CLASSIC CARMICHEL

A box was opened and two gleaming cartridges produced—too big to be real—more like phallic artifacts than ammunition. I had anticipated firing the rifle only once but here were two rounds. Was I twice blessed? At a cost of more than $100 each for the .700 cartridges, my friends at H&H were being more

than generous. Or was it worth it to see an American get kicked on his pants? For a moment I rested the sights on the target, then opened the

breech. One of the Holland staff dropped a round into the right barrel, then stepped well back. Clicking the safety to off, I raised the rifle and settled the plump bead in the wide notch of the express sight. For a few seconds my aim was steady and I gradually increased trigger pressure. But it wouldn’t fire. After what felt like ten pounds of pull, I gave up, dropped the muzzles to the T-rest and took another breath. The trigger pull was too heavy and more than the usual finger pressure would be needed to release the sear. So again I raised the rifle, braced myself and hauled back on the trigger.

The effect was not like being kicked on the shoulder, but instead like running into a brick wall in the dark. The recoil of heavy-caliber rifles has been described by some writers as a “push.” With a .700 Nitro, such a silly description doesn’t apply unless having a 130-pound sandbag dropped on you can be called a push. There was also a momentary impression that my nose and

jaw were no longer in alignment.Eventually my eyes refocused on the

target and the .70 caliber hole was easy to see, but not in the black square where I had aimed.

“Put another one in,” I ordered, opening the breech so the attendant could load the left barrel. This time my finger was on the rear trigger, a somewhat better position, and I determined to squeeze it as carefully as possible.

A fi ne pair of hard-earned canyonland mule deer.

Scouting along the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

The author dropped this mule deer just before sunset, covered it with brush, and left the liver and heart on top for the coyotes. He returned the next morning at fi rst light with his trusty pack horse to fi nd the heart and liver gone, but his buck untouched.

A stunningly beautiful and gratifying evening, fi lled with peace and contentment — like a symphony or tone poem by Ferde Grofé or Ottorino Resphiggi.

CLASSIC CARMICHEL

Carmichel’s quest for mountain goat led him into some of British Columbia’s steepest and most challenging terrain.

canyon, I noticed deer tracks going in opposite directions. It appeared there was fairly heavy traffic of deer going to and from some particular place. The well-used trail did not lead to any water or particularly good grazing area that anyone knew of, but I couldn’t help wondering where all the deer were that made those tracks. The trail led generally toward the south. I stored this bit of information for later investigation.

That evening Dan dug up some giant T-bone steaks, which must have smelled mighty good to the local coyote population. They howled a few mournful tunes for our dining entertainment and the bones we tossed out were gone the next morning.

The next day we rode west and skirted some limestone bluffs where Hunter had spotted some good bucks during his pre-season scouting. Eddie and I circled a fairly wide area, hoping to jump some deer out of the bluff pockets and possibly move them toward a low mesa where Hunter and the Smith brothers were on the lookout.

About mid-morning Eddie and I heard a quick series of shots, but it turned out to be another hunter whom we never saw.

Early in the afternoon I found myself fairly close to camp, and since I’d lost track of Hunter and the Smiths, and wasn’t sure where Rube had taken Carlo, I headed in for a snack and perhaps a shave. Fred Wells and his younger son had gone to check out a few draws northeast of camp, but to my notion it was too warm and still for much deer movement. In other words a perfect time to crawl into the sack for a couple hours of shuteye.

About four in the afternoon, after a nice nap, splash-bath and shave, I headed south out of camp. I didn’t have a clear idea of where I was going, but the heavy concentration of tracks we’d seen the day before had given me an idea. The deer that made all those tracks had to come from somewhere and if a fellow got there at the right time, there should be some action.

After riding south for about a half-hour, I turned due east. This would lead me across the heavily traveled trail and if I had calculated right, just in time for the late-afternoon traffic.

High in the Andes, where the author faced one of his most perilous challenges to survive while hunting the Tyruka, Peru’s fabled four-antlered deer.

Carmichel’s legendary passion for guns and hunting has led him to some of the most spectacular places on earth, from Persia for ibex and Armenian sheep, to New Zealand for tahr and chamois, and the Andes for the mythic Tyruka.

“Crocs,” Rowbotham would say, his voice tight, “murderous bastards.”I’d seen crocs before, in Sudan’s Nile swamps, in French Equatorial Africa,

and once in Botswana where I’d witnessed an ear-shattering battle between a croc and a baboon. The baboon’s troop-mates had viciously attacked the crocodile, but the hard-scaled reptile never loosened its jaw-lock on the unfortunate primate. It simply slid beneath the water and that was the end.

The crocodiles I’d seen before had never impressed me as being especially wild, but these crocs were so wary that there was little chance of getting a good look at one before it slid into the water and disappeared.

“Are they always this wild?” I asked Rowbotham.“Oh yes,” he answered, “they’re bloody spooky buggers . . . tough to get a

shot at one. They’re more wary than any game animal.”That did it; until then I had never had any overwhelming desire to

hunt crocodiles, but learning now that they were hard to bag presented an irresistible challenge.

“Mike, I’ve got to get a croc,” I announced.Rowbotham raised his eyebrow for a long moment, then gazed into the

deathly green as if silently struggling with an unseen evil. Then the cloud passed from his face and he grinned with his characteristic good humor.

“Okay Jim, we’ll get one.”Upstream a silent form stirred the water’s surface for an instant and then

disappeared, radiating an arc of ripples across the slowly moving current.

The next day the weather turned cool and remained so for several days, spoiling our chances of finding a crocodile in a shootable position. More at home in the water than on land, they mainly come ashore to bask in the sun. But now with the sun hidden by clouds and the air cooler than normal, they cradled themselves in the warmth of the sluggish African water.

Several times that week we saw crocs in the water, as many as a dozen at a time, their snouts and eyes barely breaking the surface, looking like floating slabs of rotten wood. A few times I was only a few feet from the creatures, and a killing shot through the eye and into the brain would have been simple. But shooting a croc in the water is usually a waste, because it will sink immediately,

chamois and carried the head, cape, and quarters of meat in Jeff’s rucksack. Game meat is highly prized table fare in New Zealand and nearly everything is packed out no matter how rough the hiking.

By the time we got back to camp, the last glimmerings of a summer evening had turned the glaciers into glittering cascades of diamonds but I was too weary to hold my head up and look. After some hot beans and sausage, however, not to mention a glass of

Jeff’s homemade wine, the day’s adventure took on a rosy perspective. All in all, it was the hardest day’s hunting in my career—and probably the luckiest.

Fred, as I learned when I caught up with him in Wellington, had had some incredible luck of his own. It seems that Bennie had taken him on a motor tour of the South Island and somewhere in the mountains they had spotted a group of chamois only few hundred yards from the road. Bennie had his .243 in the trunk, so Fred, still decked in suit and tie, tip-toed through the brush, got to within shooting distance, and dropped an especially big buck. Such impromptu shooting is mainly illegal in America but not in New Zealand.

Jeff drove me to the Christchurch airport and I was going through the gate when a final devilish urge hit me to get even for his “for a Yank” comment.

“Jeff, come to America and go hunting with me and a couple of my pals. We’ll show you some Yank-style shooting like you won’t believe.”

When we arrived at the place where Jeff had jumped the tahr, there was nothing to be seen but brush and scattered boulders. To get a better view we shinnied to the top of a dump truck-sized boulder and at once spotted the tahr about a hundred yards off. At the same instant he winded us and made a spectacular dive from his perch into a thicket at least 20 feet below. I snapped off a shot at the airborne target and caught him low in the rib cage. He went limp in

mid-air and crashed into brush. There was no doubt that I’d hit him solid.

“I don’t believe it,” whistled an amazed Jeff. “Nobody makes a shot like that.”

“Just luck,” I shrugged, barely able to control my own amazement. “Just luck.”

“That’s twice you’ve been a bit too lucky today Mate. Are all you Yanks that lucky?”

“Sure,” I assured him with as bland an expression as I could possibly manage, “Some American hunters are even luckier than I am.”

Jeff stared me in the eye to see if I could possibly be joking and I stared back as innocent and truthful as I could. I expect he’s still

wondering if I was pulling his leg or not, but for the next two days of our happy association he had very little additional comment about the prowess of his fellow New Zealanders marksmen.

To get the tahr off the mountain, Jeff laced the animal’s front legs through slits cut in the rear leg tendons and carried it piggyback fashion. I dressed the

BISON-LEATHER TRAVEL BAGS TIMOTHY HUTTO KNIVESTimothy (Bubba) Hutto of Springfield,

South Carolina, has always had a love for knifemaking, though it wasn’t until a year ago that he fashioned his first blade. On several occasions over the years he was able to watch legendary knifemaker George Herron in his shop in Springfield, where the master bladesmith created his beautiful works of art.

Influenced by Herron, Bubba handcrafts his stainless-steel blades, which are meticulously heat-treated and tempered. For his handles he uses blackwood, rosewood, bird’s-eye maple, cherry, black walnut, and bone. His knife styles include straight points, drop points, skinners, fillets, and recurves.

“I want to pursue my knifemaking skills to the highest level I can achieve,” says the 39-year-old craftsman. “My wife and three children stand behind me in all that I do.”All five of these knives reflect designs created by master knifemaker George Herron. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.
