www.artsatstowe.co.ukWelcome

Cover photograph: Blunderbus Theatre

I am delighted to introduce you to our Autumn Season, taking

us from our glorious Summer performances through to our Festive Season here at Stowe, which promises to be very special.

Summer had so many wonderful moments, it is difficult to pick which to highlight, from the highly entertaining HandleBards and their performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the South Front, the African Beats of Grupo Lokito, and the Spanish rhythms of Jaleo Flemenco to the stunning Opera della Luna with their delightfully wicked production of Orpheus in the Underworld.

Welcome to Arts at Stowe

Alongside our usual programme of bringing incredible music, art, and theatre, for all ages and tastes to Stowe this autumn, there will also be a very special performance from the legendary Judie Tzuke. We are very proud to celebrate the talents of our young people at Stowe and we extend an open invitation for our audience to come and enjoy a selection of their concerts and the Drama Department’s Lysistrata in November. We would also recommend visiting the new Welcome and Discovery Centre at Stowe House: it has transformed the cellar into a space of light and dark with interactive portraits and a beautiful collection of artefacts. The glorious grounds of Stowe and Stowe House also offer a wonderful setting for weddings and events.

I am sure you will find many things to delight you this autumn, with our great Wednesday night concert series, an eclectic collection of theatre shows for all ages from the hilarious award winning comedy He Had Hairy Hands to the exquisite beauty and gentle comedy of Duck, Death and the Tulip. An event that I am particularly looking forward to is the upbeat soul-jazz fusion of The Fresh Dixie Project in November.

We have a very supportive audience, who have been asking how they can help build Arts at Stowe into a great local venue, so

for the first time we are offering you the opportunity to become a Member of Arts at Stowe.

I hope you enjoy our Autumn Season and, if you do, let us know on Facebook or Twitter, or let us know at one of our events.

Viv McLean and The Adderbury Ensemble return to Stowe to perform another giant masterpiece of the chamber music repertoire. This Piano Quintet is considered to be the finest of Schumann’s chamber music works: An impressive and passionate piece of music written in the year that Schumann was finally able to marry the love of his life after years of opposition from her father.

Whilst The Adderbury Ensemble is a local legend, it has given numerous performances throughout Great Britain and Europe and established itself as one of the finest chamber groups in the country. The newspapers have said, “living in Adderbury must be like living in Salzburg or

A fascinating mixed-genre concert combining music and painting.

To mark this year’s 100th anniversary of the death of Russian composer Alexander Skryabin, pianist Anthony Hewitt recorded his complete Preludes. This concert includes some of his favourites, alongside preludes by Rachmaninov and Debussy plus Mussorgsky’s masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition which was inspired by paintings by his friend Viktor Hartmann.

With her exquisite paper cut outs, Artist Klára Smith has drawn ten contemporary takes on each scene/movement. Her creations have been digitally transformed into a beautiful accompaniment projected throughout the performance.

Stowe School Drama presents

LysistrataIn Aristophanes’ Lysistrata the women of Athens, fed up with the war against neighbouring Sparta, decide to go on a sex strike and barricade themselves into the Acropolis to ‘persuade’ their male partners to vote for peace.

In recent years the play has been claimed as an inspiration by political movements from Feminism, to Greenham Common protestors, to the movement against the invasion of Iraq.

The most often performed of all Aristophanes’ comedies, it is also, perhaps, the most misunderstood.

Nick Bayley, Director of Drama at Stowe, will direct a cast drawn from the cream of Stowe’s Senior School acting talent in a vibrant, exciting and at times risqué production.

Duck Death and the Tulip is an award-winning performance for every small child and their grownup friends.

Adapted for the stage from the acclaimed book by German illustrator, Wolf Erlbruch, it tells the story of a heart-warming and whimsical friendship between a playful duck and a character called Death.

Duck and Death meet, drink tea together, go swimming in the pond, climb a tree, and keep each other warm. Duck asks lots

of questions. Duck learns that Death is a constant companion, a part of life.

Through mime, magic and puppets, the production deals with the difficult subject of death in a deceptively simple way that engages children and adults alike.

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark Based on the bestselling children’s classic by Jill Tomlinson.

Plop is a baby Barn Owl. He lives at the top of a tall tree, in a field. He is fat and fluffy. He has big round eyes and very knackety knees. Plop is exactly the same as every barn owl that has ever been – except for one thing. Plop is AFRAID of the DARK.

One day, Mr Barn Owl suggests that Plop fly down into the world and find about the dark for himself. So, Plop climbs out of his nest-hole, peeps over the edge, wobbles a bit, and falls off his branch. And this is where Plop’s adventure begins...

This gentle, reassuring tale is brought to life with an irresistible blend of music, puppetry and storytelling. Written especially for small people aged 3-7 and grown ups who still sleep with the light on.

EXHIBITION MONDAY 14 SEPTEMBER – MONDAY 28 SEPTEMBER | SAINSBURY GALLERY, WATSON SCHOOL OF ART

Klára Smith Preludes to PromenadesThis evocative exhibition hides worlds within worlds. Papercut images hide a secret: They tell one story in their flat state and a completely different one when light paints through them a world of distorted shadows. Klára Smith calls this ‘shadowmaking’. After Klára took an illustration course at the London College of Printing, she became passionate about

printmaking and book arts and so her work diversified as well as combined all these forms. Klára started illustrating with their common denominator – paper.

Of her work, Klára says “I like to keep surprising the viewer so in most of my hand-cut pictures there are little creatures and monsters lurking, sharing the story of which they may not be the stars but a heart-stealing support crew. If you smile while looking at my images, I’m happy.”

Part of this exhibition is a series of papercut images illustrating Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. This is an ongoing project with pianist, Anthony Hewitt, whose performances are accompanied by a gentle animation of the shadowy images.

The Sainsbury Gallery will be open on 23 September before the concert with a chance to see them animated for the performance in the Ugland Auditorium. See page 9 for more details.

Welcome and Discovery Centre www.artsatstowe.co.uk

Stowe House Preservation Trust is thrilled to invite you

to our Welcome and Discovery Centre which we opened in early August.

Our innovative facilities, newly built in the previously unseen wine cellars, provide fascinating new stories of the House and its history. The expanded and redesigned area is fully accessible, and promises a delightfully immersive experience for visitors of all ages. The Centre is an important achievement as we work towards our goal of providing ‘Enlightenment for All’.

Welcome and Discovery Centre

The Centre includes a bright reception and retail area, as well as a large exhibition space that serves to enhance your experience of the House. Alongside furniture and artefacts are interactive portraits, depicting key figures from several periods of Stowe’s history. These state-of-the-art innovations extend to the tours of the House. During the school holidays, you can choose to explore our beautiful rooms at your own pace with one of our iPod tours, and, year-round, our knowledgeable volunteers are happy to show you through the State Rooms. Either way, we hope you enjoy our intriguing and fresh understanding of the House.

Running through the heart of each visit is the imaginative re-telling of the stories of Stowe. Recent research divides the House’s past into four main acts which include: the creation of the House, along with the gardens and fortunes, which was soon followed by a century of extravagant parties and entertaining. The opening of the

School then brought a revival in fortunes, and enabled the House to survive to the present. Our restoration work and your visit are vital to keeping Stowe alive for future generations to enjoy. We invite you to come and experience a country house like you’ve never seen before – a house that fell, rose, and is rising again.
