PREPARATION OF WOODBasecoat the wood surface with one coat of Gesso, sand lightly, wipe dust off with a tack cloth. Leave the landscape area unpainted with just the white Gesso showing. The purple on each side of the barn scene is Middle Purple, stenciled leaves are Dark Purple. Make

sure you mix up enough of both of these mixes to cover both ends and enough to stencil the leaves. Do not worry if your mix isn’t exactly like mine, just make sure the purples are equal in tone diff erence. Transfer the pattern onto tracing paper then trace pattern on with carbon paper.

INSTRUCTIONSFollow the worksheet carefully. Notice that I have included a sample of the three shades of purple.

SkyUsing the chisel edge of the wash brush and start-ing behind the house, paint Warm White + a touch of Brilliant Red for a pink color, next add a touch of Yel-low to this mix for the yellow in the sky, fi nally fi nish the sky with Baby Blue. Be careful that the yellow and the blue don’t turn into green. Add an indication of a white cloud with Warm White by pushing off heavier paint with the corner of a #8 fl at brush. Soften very gently with a clean Wash Brush or a mop brush of your choice.

Foliage behind the barn. Using a worn out #8 fl at brush load the brush evenly with the middle Purple Mix; start tapping to create the background purple foliage behind the barn. With the same tapping mo-tion, add Alizarin Crimson + Brilliant Red, followed by a touch of orange. Do not cover up all the back-ground purple mix. Behind the large tree, I added Traditional Burnt Umber + a touch of Alizarin Crim-son, this mix was used directly above the roof of the barn. This looks like a dark brown. Next add the green bushes fi rst with Black Forest Green, (again using the #8 worn out fl at brush) highlighted with Citron Green; add touches of Warm White + Yellow. Use the same color combination when putting in the pine-tree. I used a #8 fl at brush with back and forth strokes and highlighted on the left side with the lighter greens. Even though the highlights are just on the left side of the pine-tree, I like to add a touch here and there on the right side especially when putting in a larger pine-tree. If you don’t do this your tree tends to look as if you cut it in half.

BarnBase the barn in with a thin coat of Burnt Sienna. I

have a close-up of the barn on the worksheet. Next, add streaks with the blues and lavender mix’s. Keep underneath the barn gable and left sides of the barn dark by adding less of the light color mixtures. Be sure to establish defi nite light and dark sides of the build-ing. Add the door and cross-bars with Traditional Burnt Umber + a touch of Lamp Black using a #1 liner.

RoofBase the roof in with a wash of Burnt Sienna, add touches of the medium lavender mix with a #6 fl at brush. Watch the slant of the roof. I added some crev-ices on the roof by cutting into the roof with a darker mix using a small fl at brush or a liner.

PathPath is simply Traditional Burnt Umber on the edges and purple mixes in the center based in with a fl at brush. The main thing on a path is to keep your strokes horizontal from one another and back and forth. Don’t slant the path. Blend lightly together, add highlights and shadows as needed.

GrassesWith a ½ inch rake brush start making short downward strokes. The length of the strokes are shorter near the barn and longer toward the front. Dark shadow colors are Traditional Burnt Sienna + Traditional Burnt Umber, lighter colors are a mixture of traditional Burnt Sienna + Yellow Ochre. Lightest color toward the center is Yellow Ochre + Cadmium Yellow + Warm White.

BushesUse a worn out soft #8 brush to tap in the dark green bushes, next add Warm White for a middle green then add a touch of Citron Green for a brighter green. Make sure when putting in the highlights on the bushes that you don’t make the clusters into formed circles. The highlight greens should be toward the top of the bush-es. Shadow underneath with Burnt Umber + a touch of Burnt Sienna.

Tree TrunkLove this trunk! Base the tree in with Traditional Burnt Umber with the chisel edge of a Wash Brush or Large fl at. Two coats may be needed. Put the highlights on with a #6 fl at brush starting outside the edge of the trunk. If the trunk is not wet enough, add just enough water or retarder to cover the surface. The left side of the trunk is Yellow Ochre with a touch of Traditional Burnt Sienna. The right side is the Middle Purple with a touch of the Light Lavender. I have an enlarged ver-sion of this on the worksheet. You can almost see what I have done. Go around the tree to suggest the knot hole. If you want to add a raccoon in the center.

FINISHINGFinish the piece by repeating any steps necessary. Clean up smudges that the stencil may have left. I didn’t go through the directions of the stencil but you can look them up on line. Artists Club has many won-derful stencils and stencil brushes. Varnish as necessary and you are fi nished!
