Perspective

May the holidays be merry and brightThe holidays are a time of year that

many of us eagerly anticipate. The season is marked by special foods, seasonal decorations and lots of festivities. Around North Central Florida, we look forward to fall festivals, fairs and Christmas parades in our local communities.

We cherish carrying on old family traditions and enjoy creating new ones. For me personally, I look forward to more time spent with family and friends. However, given the hustle and bustle of the season, the holidays can also offer an opportunity to slow down and reflect. For all of us at Clay Electric, we are grateful for you, the members of the co-op.

You see, one of our founding principles as a co-op is “Concern for Community.” While our main focus is providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity, we want to give back. We want to help our communities thrive.

In looking back at this past year, I’m thankful we were able to make a positive impact in the region. Through our Operation Round Up program that is fueled by voluntary donations from you, we have been able to award an average of $86,000 a month in community grants. Additionally, we have been able to help many families in the community pay their electric bills through our Project Share

program. We are also grateful for the opportunity

to partner with local schools to raise awareness of the importance of electrical safety and discuss the career paths available at the co-op. This year, we visited with hundreds of students across our 14-county service area. We also continue to work closely with our local high schools to award college scholarships. In 2019, we awarded funds to 28 students.

There are other ways we help the community, whether we’re providing information about solar power and utility scams, or helping you find ways to save energy at home. We’re here to help you and be your trusted source for information.

Looking ahead to 2020, we hope you will share your opinions with us. We recognize that our members have a valuable perspective, and that’s why we continually seek your input. Whether through community events, our social media channels or the annual meeting, we want to hear from you. We are led by you — the members of the co-op — and we depend on your feedback.

As we prepare for next year, we look forward to the opportunity to serve you and the greater community. On behalf of the Clay Electric family, we hope your holidays are blessed with peace and joy.

Keystone District to receive new meters this monthMore than 60 percent of

Clay Electric’s members have received the co-op’s new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters.

Installations are wrapping up in the Salt Springs District and are scheduled to begin in mid-November in the Keystone Heights District. The remaining sequence of districts will be Gainesville and Lake City. The Orange Park and Palatka Districts are fully deployed.

In January, the co-op employed a licensed contractor, Allegiant Utility Services, to change out existing meters across our service area with advanced meters to improve reliability and to give detailed data about energy use.

You will receive prior notification by mail of when to expect the meter replacement. When Allegiant arrives at your home, an installer will knock at the door to let you know they are there to replace

your meter. The contractors will be in uniform and will have photo identification cards. Their ID cards and company vehicles display both the Allegiant and Clay Electric logos.

The installers will not need, nor will they request, to enter your home. They will also not request any personal information or payment from you for the meter replacement service, which is free. If you are not home, Allegiant will proceed with placing the new meter.

newsbriefs

New study reveals co-op’s impact on regionClay Electric contributed more than

$1.6 billion to the economy during a five-year period from 2013 to 2017, according to a new economic impact study conducted by the National Rural Electric Cooperatives Association (NRECA).

“The co-op brings electricity to the families, businesses and towns in North Central Florida, creating jobs, fueling growth and powering the lives within our communities,” said General Manager/CEO Ricky Davis.

The study revealed more than 1,965 jobs in the region are supported by Clay Electric.

“Behind every one of the jobs we support is a hard-working individual who is committed to serving our communities,” Davis said. “The measurements from the study really quantify the impact we have.”

“Whether it’s setting up a new account, maintaining service or rebuilding after a storm, we’re here for our members,” said Chief Public Relations Officer Derick Thomas, who has worked at the co-op for 20 years. “With this job, I’m serving my community and supporting my family.”

As a cooperative, of which the consumers are members, Clay Electric allocates Capital Credits to each member, which reflects their pro-rata share of any margins left over at the end of the year after all expenses are paid. The economic impact study reported that Clay Electric returned more than $28.5 million to the families and businesses in the region during the five-year period.

Furthermore, the study found the co-op generated more than $367.6 million in local tax revenue. That revenue, which goes to state and local governments, is reinvested in strengthening the schools and other essential services in our communities.

Clay Electric is deeply rooted in the region, and the co-op supports its neighbors in many ways beyond the economic contributions. The co-op contributed more than $725,000 to community organizations through

its Operation Round Up and social responsibility programs from 2013-2017. Additionally, the co-op helped high school students and adults prepare for their future by funding $133,000 in college scholarships during the study period.

Statewide, the impact of Florida’s electric cooperatives on the economy is astounding. In a separate economic impact study conducted by NRECA, findings indicate that Florida’s electric cooperatives across the state contributed more than $11.6 billion to

the economy over a five-year period, from 2013 to 2017, and Florida’s electric cooperatives support more than 15,000 jobs for Florida families per year on average.

“Clay Electric was formed in 1937 to serve rural areas of Clay County and today we work to efficiently deliver safe, reliable and affordable electricity to members in 14 counties,” Davis said. “Serving our members and community has been our mission for the last 82 years and will continue to be a top priority for generations to come.”

The co-op is deeply rooted in the region and supports its neighbors in ways beyond power distribution and restoration, according to a recent economic study.

Two co-op members recently learned they are this year’s recipients of Clay Electric’s Back to Your Future Scholarships.

Kayla Carson of Orange Park and Aaron Merz of Alachua were selected to receive the scholarships designed to help older students pursue their educational goals.

For more than 20 years, the co-op has been providing scholarships for deserving high school students. Five years ago, the co-op was able to expand that effort to provide this scholarship for

students over the age of 22.Applicants were scored based on

financial need, leadership and/or community service, and educational goals and career plans.

Carson is a student in St. Johns River State College’s nursing program. When she obtains her associate’s degree, she plans to enter the workforce, but also return to school to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

“Becoming a part of a field that is so caring is the end goal I’m aiming for,” Carson said. “We are currently learning

in school that nursing is a field of lifelong learning and that is what I plan on doing.”

Merz is on track to graduate in December 2020 with a master’s in education degree and an education specialist certificate from the University of Florida.

“Initially, I was certain I would work as a high school counselor,” Merz said. “However, I have since opened my mind to the possibility of working with lower grade levels if the right situation presented itself.”
