Editors’ welcomeWelcome to another edition of the Brisbane Kids Holiday Guide... wait... unless... you noticed a change in the title of the guide! For now and ever more the holiday guide will be known as The Official Guide to Child Friendly Brisbane and will be defined by the seasons. While this current edition still focuses more on the holidays, all future editions will be about the season of either Autumn, Winter, Summer or Spring. With an earlier distribution schedule this will allow us to share holiday workshops requiring bookings, school open days as well as after school and weekend activities during term. We will still be activity focused providing you with the official guide to child friendly Brisbane, events, activities and things to do.

The Wildlife CentreResident animals include platypus, wombats, rainforest birds, reptiles and nocturnal marsupials, as well as kangaroos and wallabies. The centre has daily shows during the school term, but offers a much more extensive program in the school holidays. They also offer spotlight tours from time to time that provide a different perspective for kids. The wildlife centre at Walkabout Creek is best suited to younger children and primary school age kids. It isn’t a huge centre, but together with the shows, it provides a great morning out. You can bring your own food and picnic on site, or take advantage of the café upstairs next to the Visitor Centre. Bushwalking tracksD’Aguilar National Park, accessed from Walkabout Creek, offers two bushwalking tracks that each require a reasonable amount of fitness and good walking shoes.Corymbia Circuit (1.5km return) - This walk will take approximately 45 minutes through a wet forest gully which is steep at times. Araucaria Track (5km return) - This track offers great opportunities for bird watching, so take binoculars if you have them. The track takes you around Enoggera Reservoir.

Swimming and kayaking You can enjoy a picnic along the sandy shore of the Enoggera Reservoir dam, which is a short walk from the Walkabout Creek Visitor Centre. Enjoy a swim in the calm waters, or bring your canoe or kayak for a peaceful paddle. Just note there are no toilets located here, except for those in the Visitor Centre, at this stage. Walkabout Creek Visitor Centre is located at 60 Mount Nebo Road, The Gap, Brisbane Area. There is no entry fee to the Visitor Centre, which features a café and toilet facilities.

Mountain bike ridingMountain bike riders can test their skills, practice their moves, and improve their technique on purpose-built trails designed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS). The trails are suitable for learners, as well as more experienced riders.

Walkabout CreekWalkabout Creek Visitor Centre and South East Queensland Wildlife Centre

Located just 12km from Brisbane City is Walkabout Creek Visitor Centre, featuring a live wildlife centre with regular shows and a low entry fee. It also sits on the edge of the D’Aguilar National Park, which offers onsite opportunities for bushwalking, kayaking and mountain bike riding.

Rock climbing in Brisbane

Outdoor rock climbing

Riverlife, situated in Kangaroo Point, operate guided rock climbing experiences for kids from the age of 8, with qualified and experienced instructors. Making use of the 20m cliffs along the Brisbane River, each Riverlife rock climbing session includes full instruction, safety briefing and equipment hire. Safety equipment includes a helmet, harness, rope and chalk. Various levels of rock climbing ability are catered to - from beginner to expert - with no prior experience required. Australian Explorer offers various opportunities to climb the Glasshouse Mountains with kids over the age of 10 (accompanied by an adult). You’ll find their terms and conditions for children climbers on their website. http://www.australianexplorer.com/

Frew Park at Milton is an exciting multi-storey playground that offers a rockclimbing wall (though do note that this is an unsupervised concrete climbing wall that doesn’t have ropes), but it still a very popular feature at this central Brisbane park. Location: between Milton Road and Frew Street at Milton. Carpark access is via Frew Street.

Brooking Park in Ripley (Ipswich) boasts a BBQ area and playground with multiple slides and a climbing wall with ropes for kids to pull themselves up, or foot and hand holds that give them a taste of indoor rock climbing in the great outdoors. Location: 582 Ripley Road, Ripley.

When playgrounds outgrow your kids it is time to look to nature to provide the ultimate in climbing experiences.

Indoor Rock climbing

There are variety of different indoor rock climbing venues in Brisbane that cater for a range of age groups.

Bay Play, Cleveland has two rock climbing walls – “Mt Kosciusko” and the “Mini Traverse Wall”. The Mini Traverse Wall is built with under 4’s and wheelchair-bound patrons in mind, whilst Mt Kosciusko offers multiple levels of difficulty where people can test their skills and hopefully climb high enough to ring the victory bell. The best part about rock climbing at Bay Play is the foam pit that lies below - ensuring a happy and safe fall - plus the rest of the playcentre to have fun in. Crank Indoor Climbing caters to beginners through to advanced climbers, slackliners, spartan trainers, tough mudder trainers, ninja warriors and more, and is also a great venue for birthday parties and corporate events. Location: 2/537 Kessels Rd, Macgregor. Ph: 0413 891 229

Stay close to the rock surfaceBeginner climbers often try to hold themselves away from the surface using their hands and elbows to grip tight; this technique will make you tired very fast. Your arms should only be used to shift your weight, not support you.

Practice fallingThe safest way to fall is away from the rock face so you don’t get hurt. Practice falling this way so that you get used to the feeling of pushing away from the surface and being caught by the ropes.

Don’t climb too highBouldering is a term used for climbing across the rock face without a harness and it can be heaps of fun but make sure you stay down low! The safety mats are soft but it will still hurt if you fall from a height that is supposed to be for belayed climbing (climbing with ropes).

Wear snug shoesYou need your shoes to be tighter than you would have them for other outdoors sports and activities because it’s so important that you don’t lose your grip as you climb. Be careful that you don’t make them SO tight that you cut off the circulation in your feet though!

Brisbane Kids review

The opportunity to tap into the Dark Ages has come to the Queensland Museum in Brisbane, direct from the British Museum. Medieval Power: Symbols & Splendour features precious gold, jewellery, seals, sculptures, stained glass and many other symbols of courtly life, alongside tools of war, objects of religious significance and humble items from everyday life dating back to AD 400. That’s over 1,600 years ago!

Our family of six (children aged 8-14 years) wandered through the exhibition and enjoyed the peek into medieval life. Did you know there were comic books in the dark ages? Various scenes were intricately carved into ivory panels, which were joined together with hinges to make a portable book-like object.

The exhibition is geared more for adults and families with older children. There is a fun quest trail older kids can follow throughout the exhibit to keep them engaged and informed.

If you’re a family with toddlers and young children, but are still keen to visit the exhibit yourself, there are plenty of fun things for kids to enjoy at Queensland Museum and adults could take turns at walking through the exhibit.

Plus, there is free fun for everyone in the form of a HUGE cardboard castle and crown making station outside the exhibit, so you can get your royal on. I was surprised how much my older children enjoyed writing their names and creating drawings on the castle.

During the holidays there will be free additional programs in the INVENTory space on level 4, including stained glass window making and the opportunity to design your own heraldic flags and shields.

Wow playgroundsQueens Park - Ipswich

Queens Park is a fantastic park for all ages with lots of places to play and run about, as well as a wildlife centre with animals like wombats, snakes, a rock wallaby and, more recently, a habitat containing the Bilby. The playground features slides, trees to climb and water play that includes a pump and river stones. Queens Park also features a large flying fox for the bigger kids and lots of grassed areas to kick the ball around.

Crockatt Park - Woody Point

Crockatt Park is a seaside park that draws in families for long lazy afternoons with plentiful shade and seating along the foreshore. It features a shaded playground offering climbing options for kids of all ages and a flying fox for whoever dares. Explore the rocky shoreline, take a walk along the Woody Point Jetty and drop a fishing line in, or simply grab some fish and chips and enjoy the view.

Stoneleigh Reserve - Logan Reserve

Instead of the traditional play equipment you would expect to see in a playground, the Farmyard play area at Stoneleigh Reserve has small paddocks where resident (artificial) animals, Mootilda the cow and five chickens, Murtyl, Hilda, Gertie, Chickpea and Harriet, reside under the shady branches of a Fig tree. This park is all about imagination and is best suited to younger kids, though it’s also perfect for scooter and bike riding which would also occupy older children. BBQ. No toilets. Free parking.
