We warmly welcome you to the Music in the Round Autumn Series 2011.This year we take a lead from the Greek scientist and mathematician Archimedes and celebrate some extraordinary ‘Eureka’ moments in music history. There are occasions when the introduction of a single new idea – sometimes simple, sometimes grand – has changed the whole direction of musical development through the ages. The works in these concerts are full of such instances.

Our expert guides are the members of Ensemble 360 and a fabulous array of guest artists who, as well as offering their individual insights into pieces that stand as turning points in musical development, will share with us their own personal experiences of revelation and inspiration.

In amongst the historical perspective, we also present one vision of the future: ‘Parampara’ (Thursday 10 November). The evening offers a deeply profound, original and close-up vision of creative insight in the company of three exceptionally charismatic musicians.

We also invite you to join us on a very personal journey being taken by Ensemble 360’s immensely talented pianist, Tim Horton, as he embarks on a cycle of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas. Monumental music in the company of a brilliant musician with rare insight – ‘Eureka’, indeed!

BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata in F minor Op.2 No.1Piano Sonata in C Op.2 No.3 Piano Sonata in A Op.2 No.2 Piano Sonata in F minor Op.57 Appassionata

The Autumn Series is launched with the first performance in a four-year cycle of Beethoven’s celebrated piano sonatas, performed by Ensemble 360’s outstanding pianist Tim Horton.

The Op.2 sonatas, the first Beethoven wrote, show very different characters: concise drama in the first, warmth and humour in the second and brilliant virtuosity in the last. Beethoven’s spectacular masterpiece Appassionata Sonata was written at the same time as his Fifth Symphony, and shares with it the famous theme heard in the symphony’s opening moments.

BACH Flute Sonata in B minor BEETHOVEN Quintet for Piano and Wind in E flat Op.16SCHUBERT Octet in F D803For clarinet, horn, bassoon, string quartet and double bass

Resident eleven-piece group Ensemble 360 gives a special performance in the Crucible Theatre, filling Sheffield Theatres’ main auditorium with some of the greatest chamber music ever written, opening with Bach’s beautiful and heart-wrenching Flute Sonata.

Beethoven’s Quintet was modelled on Mozart’s piece for the same instruments, which can be heard on Thursday 1 December (pg 13). Although he took inspiration from Mozart, Beethoven made the form his own and took it to new heights.

Schubert’s exquisite and epic Octet is full of memorable tunes and illustrates the composer’s startling originality and invention.

HAYDN Quartet in C Op.64 No.1 BARTÓK Quartet No.4 SCHUBERT Quartet in D minor D810 Death and the Maiden

The Doric String Quartet, considered to be one of the best young quartets playing today, makes a welcome return to the Studio to perform three very different pieces.

Haydn’s Quartet in C is light and spirited with a lively finish. In contrast, Bartók’s fourth string quartet is a piece full of exhilarating drama and tension.

Schubert’s dramatic masterpiece Death and the Maiden features an anguished slow movement, a death march based on the composer’s song of the same name. It is a work of great intensity and one of the best-loved pieces in all of chamber music.

Ensemble 360’s clarinetist Matthew Hunt and pianist Tim Horton perform two wonderfully light-hearted and effervescent pieces. Weber’s Grand Duo Concertant is one of his finest creations; a ‘tour de force’, virtuosic piece with more than a hint of opera thrown in!

Mozart’s Sonata in B flat is one of the greatest sonatas ever written for violin and piano. Following a long line of violin sonata arrangements by many composers, it is played here in a new arrangement by the performers themselves.

Ensemble 360 contrasts music from pre- and post-Revolution Russia, opening with Rachmaninov’s Trio Élégiaque, which reveals a strong influence from Tchaikovsky.

Shostakovich’s Trio was written as a response to the death of his friend Ivan Sollertinsky. It is also a lament to the victims of the Holocaust and features elements of Jewish folk.

The Soldier’s Tale Suite was adapted by Stravinsky from his theatrical work of the same name. It is a Faustian fable in which a soldier trades his violin with the devil in exchange for untold wealth.

BEETHOVEN Sonata for Cello and Piano in F Op.5 No.1 R STRAUSS Sonata for Cello and Piano in F Op.6

Ensemble 360’s cellist Gemma Rosefield and pianist Tim Horton perform Beethoven’s First Sonata for Cello and Piano. This was the first cello sonata to present the two instruments as equal partners, giving both players moments of virtuosity.

Richard Strauss’s Sonata is a high-spirited showcase for his virtuosic style of writing. Although it was written early in the composer’s career the mature Strauss is beating at the door, the piece’s bold originality heralding his later style.

HAYDN String Quartet in C Op.74 No.1DEBUSSY Quartet in G minor Op.10BEETHOVEN String Quartet in F Op.135

Hailed by The New York Times as “something extraordinary”, Grammy Award-winning, USA-based Parker Quartet performs three well-loved quartets ahead of a concert at Wigmore Hall.

For most of Haydn’s lifetime the string quartet was traditionally a private form of music not designed for the concert hall. This quartet, however, was intended for a public performance and is, as a result, very different in character.

Debussy’s only string quartet is typical of the expressive sensuality of late nineteenth century French music.

Beethoven’s last string quartet is lighter in character than his other late quartets and appears to look back nostalgically to his earlier works.

ROUSSEL Divertissement for Piano and Wind Quintet Op.6 NIELSEN Wind Quintet Op.43POULENC Sonata for Flute & PianoMOZART Quintet for Piano and Wind in E flat K452

Mozart considered this Quintet for Piano and Wind to be his best work to date. It certainly set a benchmark in chamber music for this combination of instruments, and it has yet to be matched.

Mozart was the inspiration behind Nielsen’s Wind Quintet. Having overheard a rehearsal of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, Nielsen was inspired to write this beautiful work depicting a rehearsal in which there are occasional differences of opinion between the players!

Two sparkling French pieces complete the line-up; Roussel’s engaging Divertissement and Poulenc’s Flute Sonata are full of wit and invention.

MOZART Sonata in A K526 BEETHOVEN Sonata in C minor Op.30 No.2DEBUSSY Sonata in G minorFRANCK Sonata in A

Music in the Round co-founder and The Lindsays’ leader Peter Cropper is joined by world-renowned pianist Martin Roscoe to perform a varied selection of violin sonatas.

Mozart’s final sonata has great energy; a work of sheer brilliance. This is Mozart at his liveliest! In contrast, Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor includes one of the composer’s most heartfelt slow movements.

The colours of Debussy’s Sonata in G minor make a wonderful contrast to the lyricism of the Francks Sonata, his most famous piece and probably the most performed of all violin sonatas from the Romantic period.

Ensemble 360’s flautist Juliette Bausor and pianist Tim Horton open with variations on the song ‘Trockne Blumen’ from the song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin, a rare example of truly virtuosic music by Schubert. Both instruments are put through their paces in a piece that ranges from despair to ultimate triumph.

Tim is joined by oboist Adrian Wilson for Henri Dutilleux’s lively early sonata, a far cry from his later, more esoteric, style. The influence of Poulenc, Ravel and Debussy are never far from the surface but Dutilleux’s own exotic voice shines through.

The trio concludes with an irresistibly witty fantasy on a much-loved Rossini opera.

Ensemble 360 is joined by soprano Amy Freston, one of the most compelling young performers on the British singing scene. She has sung at Glyndebourne and with Opera North and English National Opera. Here she performs Schubert’s ever-popular Shepherd on the Rock.

Schoenberg’s second String Quartet features the precise moment when the composer diverted the course of classical music from lush and romantic tonality to atonal music. The final two movements uniquely feature a soprano, with words from Stefan George’s poem Rapture.

Brahms was a big influence on Schoenberg and you can hear this in his Piano Quartet in A, which reveals just how forward-looking the supposedly conservative Brahms really was.

This Christmas Joglaresa is ‘strictly medieval’, with harps, vielles, voices and bells. From instrumental dances to Middle English lullabies, the group performs Christmas music from the twelfth to the fifteenth century.

This London-based British/Israeli/Irish/Arabic ensemble has been performing since 1992, imaginatively pushing the limits of what is usually thought of as early music. The group combines ancient and traditional music by calling on its players’ combined experiences: traditional Irish, English, Maghrebi, Balkan and Middle Eastern.

Joglaresa has performed at Aldeburgh Festival, York Early Music Festival, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music and at many festivals around the world.
