Autumn 2019

LETTERPresident’s Whew! It’s done.

By the time this is read, the referendum projects are all complete. The Oasis Water Park had a glorious day on its grand re-opening in June and was attended by 400+ guests enjoying the new furniture, expanded shade and deck space, and an upgraded splash pad. Approximately one million dollars was spent on this renovation.

About six weeks later, I was privileged to cut the ribbon on the third iteration of the Johnston Recreation Center. The $7.7 million renovation was completed on time and totally changed the interior and exterior profile of the facility. If you haven’t visited yet, I encourage you to come out and take a look. Staff will be happy to arrange a tour and point out the new features, which are just too numerous to list. Better yet, sign up for an activity. We offer them for all ages, from toddlers to active adults.

Now that summer is behind us (BOO!), our attention focuses on indoor activities. Check out this issue and choose something that’s new to you. School will be back in session soon, and among our offerings are a wide variety of before and after school programs.

Our new state-of-the-art preschool facilities are second to none in the area and have access to a fantastic indoor playground, gymnasium, outdoor playground and park. Everything has been designed with safety in mind and the new preschool wing features the latest improvements in cushioned flooring and protective materials.

Just because the weather is changing, there is no reason to fall out of shape. The new B-Fit Center is the perfect, low-cost answer to getting in a workout on a limited time schedule. It is available when your little (and not so little) ones are attending preschools or scheduled activities. Even if it is not as light outside as it has been over the summer, our energy saving LED lighting makes it seem as if the summer sun hasn’t left us.

Feel like celebrating? Check out our newly-designed party and multi-purpose rooms available for rental. On warm fall evenings, there is even a beautiful patio adjacent to them to enjoy the last days of nice weather outdoors. Rental prices are extremely affordable, and the facilities are brand new!

In the past 22 years, I have enjoyed being a Park District Commissioner and have witnessed the evolution of the District, established in 1964 by a group of very well-intended, visionary residents to what it is today – 160+ acres of parkland, three facilities, numerous sports fields, and a water park. I can honestly say that all of the past improvements pale in comparison to what has been accomplished in the last three years. I am very proud to have been a small part of it.

Sincerely yours,

Referendum 2016 Update

With the Grand Re-Openings of both The Oasis Water Park and the Johnston Recreation this past summer, the Bloomingdale Park District completed the capital projects identified by the community as needing repair and/or improvement based upon the successful referendum in November 2016.

The Springfield Park Ballfield Complex was completed in Spring 2018 with a ribbon cutting and dedication held May 6, 2018. The fields were re-engineered to prevent widespread flooding of fields and nearby paths in addition to the installation of new batting cages, fencing and backstops, concrete walkways, shaded dugouts with windscreens, updated lighting, entrance gate and new basketball court and standards.

More deck shade and deck space, replacement of the children’s sprayground, new public benches and picnic tables, and various other improvements were completed at The Oasis Water Park in time for the Grand Re-Opening held June 1, 2019.

The Johnston Recreation Center underwent a complete renovation which included committed space for active older adult programming, improved early childhood/preschool space and enhanced security, renovated teaching kitchen, multi-purpose space for teens and older adults, relocation of the group fitness center, and incorporation of a fitness center and indoor playground. The grand re-opening was held July 13, 2019.

Restoring the shorelines of the Springfield Park Wetlands to address non-native, invasive species and improve stormwater management continues to progress according to plan.

As responsible stewards of your tax dollars, we are excited to complete these projects so that ballgames can be played with minimal interruption, and residents of all ages can enjoy a first-class recreation center and water park.

Discover Language Learning a new language is always an exciting adventure, a real “Discovery” of a whole new world and the people in it. Children are most receptive to foreign language learning between birth and age twelve. The earlier a foreign language is introduced, the more easily a greater level of understanding and fluency is achieved. Children

increases when children are able to take risks and experiment with language—and that happens when they are in a safe and comfortable environment. The DLP Curriculum creates this by providing a consistent routine and structure. Students can predict what is going to happen next, and they know what is expected of them.
