AUTUMN 2018
in school. At this time of year, there is always the potential that we could have a very cold winter. The text system is a quick and efficient way of providing parents with up to date information. If you have not provided us with your mobile number so that you can be included in the text system, I recommend that you do so. Please contact the school office
St. Anthony’s continues to be a very successful and happy school. We could not be as successful without the support we receive from parents, carers and friends of the school. Please continue to support and work with us. Your support is very much appreciated and valued by the staff and governors.
Should parents want regular updates of what we have been up to in school, then you can access the Headteacher’s Blog on the school website which is updated every other week.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year.
Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to our first newsletter for this academic year, where we have had the opportunity to welcome 37 new pupils to the school. It has been an incredibly busy start to the year with lots of activities and visits as well as all the hard work pupils have been doing in class. Hopefully you will have the chance to read about them in the newsletter.
As we approach Christmas, there will be many more events to look forward to which celebrate the festive season. There are a range of exciting activities planned for our pupils and some events that parents/carers and families are invited to attend. The Primary Department are hosting their Christmas Assembly on Monday 17th December and Christmas Soiree is taking place on Wednesday 12th December. It would be great to see as many parents as possible at these events.
Over the summer break, we have continued to develop the facilities at St. Anthony’s. A new class base and sensory space has been created in the primary department. Thank you to Mr McGreal and Mr Birch in particular for supporting and
managing these projects.
I am pleased to welcome the following new staff to the school, Mrs Coltart, Mrs King, Mrs Bicker, Mrs Hammond, Miss Everett, Miss Reddie, Mr Da Costa, Mrs Lodge, Miss Stone, Miss Gabriel, Miss Gale, Mrs Scrivener, Mr Mathias, Mr Crosby Wilsher, Miss Ennis and Mrs Siddall.
A presentation evening was held on 7th November, to celebrate the achievements of the Year 11 pupils who left school last summer. The event was extremely well attended and it was lovely to see the students. Our results were extremely good. All of the pupils who left school this year successfully achieved a range accreditation.
I would like to remind parents and carers that we have a text system that is used to alert parents of events and other important issues
‘Tis the season for Miss Ball to be choosing
this year’s winning designs from our annual
Christmas card competition. She had so
many fabulous ones, so it was a very tough
job!
The cards are available to buy from the
school office at 30p each or a pack of 10
cards at £2.50.
All proceeds will go towards enriching the
pupil’s time at school.
Look at some of the other things we’ve been learning in
Chestnut class...
This term we have been
learning the story ‘Walking
through the Jungle’. We
have been singing songs
and learning about animals
that live in the rainforest.
Walking through the
jungle what can you
see? Can you hear
a noise? What could
it be?
…..been sorting worms!
We have been working out
which were longest,
shortest or medium sized.
...making repeating
patterns with lots of
things including beads.
Every Monday Miss B teaches us to play the
instruments, we listen to her very carefully. We are learning some yoga
poses—look at us balancing!
We marked Diwali and Remembrance
Day with short films that helped us learn
about these important events. We
painted some great pictures of Poppies
too.
In our lessons we have been
learning to write letters properly
and we love making big or little
marks when we play too.
This term we have been reading
Handa’s Surprise by Eileen
Browne. It is a story full of
wonderful animals and many
different fruits. We have all enjoyed
group ‘narrative’ sessions when the
story is told using props and
symbols. We have also explored
the different fruits in the story,
chopping them up and making fruit
salads and smoothies.
The importance of Remembrance
Day can be very difficult to explain
to some of our pupils. We decided
to explore poppies in a variety of
sensory ways through ‘Little Group’
activities and individual work times.
We have enjoyed our new
area.
We said a
BIG HELLO
to lots of new faces this
term.
Our topic this term is Green ECO & Me.
Hawthorn Class made recycling superheroes to
help save the world!
We sorted rubbish into the correct bins and
identified recycling points around the school.

and different types of working
animals.
In Numeracy we looked at the different
2D and 3D shapes. We went on a
shape hunt around the school and
made our own 3D houses in DT.
In Literacy we became estate
agents. We looked at different
adjectives to describe the
houses that we were trying to
sell to each other.
In Science we have been
learning about forces. We
conducted experiments to
learn about friction,
gravity and magnetism.
Looking for 2D shapes
and describing their
properties.
In literacy we have been reading
and retelling the story of The
Three Little Pigs. The children
have used Makaton, drama and
symbols to help sequence the story.
We have then written our own
versions to read to the class.
Welcome to Willow Class Newsletter. I have
very much enjoyed getting to know your children
during my first half term and look forward to
more learning and fun in the spring term!
We have been learning the
ukulele in music with Chris. It
has been great fun singing and
playing at the same time!
The children have been busy learning their Christmas songs and are looking forward to
performing them to you on the 17th December and afterwards welcoming you into their
classroom for some festive nibbles!
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Aldingbourne Country
Centre. Here is one of
their beautiful poems and
sculptures inspired by the
season.

This year we have introduced the children’s newspaper First News to help Key Stage 4 pupils with their
reading skills. They read weekly news items from around the world and have a go at reading
challenges that help to improve their teamwork and reading skills.
Tackling the coins around the world challenge Excellent teamwork and reading skills to
do the origami bat challenge.
Completing the reading match challenge
It has been another fun filled and action packed term in the history department with time travel a plenty! Year 7 have gone the furthest, heading back to Roman times, bringing the Colosseum to life in the classroom (with a little imagination) and successfully completing Roman army training at ‘Roman Army Bootcamp’.Year 8 have re-enacted Tudor life, punishments from the time have been played out along with the
gossip and scandal from the Royal Court! Year 9 have travelled between Africa, America and Britain, looking at the slave trade and following that through to the Black Civil Rights movement and the present day. There have also been trips to Fishbourne Roman Palace with Year 7, the Mary Rose and some workshops with Year 8. A busy start to the year but lots more exciting time travelling to come in 2019.
Year 7 learnt the use of simple lab equipment
including the Bunsen burner. Initially, many of
the pupils found it daunting. However, with
encouragement and reinforcement of safety and
risk control, the pupils were able to use the
Bunsen burner correctly.
Year 9 pupils started the Autumn
term learning about Microscopy and
the introduction to cells. The pupils
learnt about the function of the parts
of the microscope, its correct use,
magnification of images and
preparing slides of some specimens
(onion skin, wing of butterfly, layer of
cork, leg of an ant).
Year 11 pupils are learning about
making different salts with the
focus on using equipment
(Burette, evaporating dish,
Bunsen burner) and hazardous
chemicals safely, and the simple
concept of neutralisation
reactions.
In maths we have been
learning about different areas
of mathematics through lots of
practical activities inside and
outside the classroom. Pupils
chose different resources, such
as counters, to estimate and
measure a variety of lengths
and distances. Our learning
about shapes and patterns was
developed through creating our
own unique patterns on the
playground. Addition and
subtraction involved threading
beads so pupils could see and
feel the different amounts in
their number sentences.
Perimeter took a similar theme
with pupils developing their
understanding of this topic
through activities such as
‘sewing’ the perimeter of
laminated shapes.
We've been exploring art-tastic nature at Create Club this term and everyone has been wonderfully creative, producing some amazing artwork. Well done everyone!
This term, Year 8 have been learning
parts of the body. They have created
monsters using magazines and labelled
them.
8C and 8T have voted for each others
monsters and Dimitri and Kieran won.
The Wider World. Year 10
are exploring foods from
the wider world and
comparing food we eat in
Britain to the food eaten
traditionally in Japan.
Lauren is trying some
Sushi. She said that she
doesn’t really like fish but
she did still try the
vegetable sushi.
Year 8’s topic for the Autumn Term is Judaism. Pupils have been learning about the story of Moses. They have learnt about the 10 Plagues of Egypt and used role play to help
remember them. Next they learned about the 10 Commandments and used Lego to show their understanding of the topic.
The topic for Year 9 RE in the Autumn Term is
Hinduism. Pupils have been learning about Hindu
beliefs and practices. Using role play they told the
story of Rama and Sita and the origins of the festival
of Diwali. It is a love story where good overcomes
evil.
Year 9 have been making
volcano models as part of their
Restless Earth scheme of work.
The pupils researched and
designed volcanoes. They then
constructed the models using
paper Mache and then painted
them to look like Dormant,
Extinct or Active Volcanoes.
This term we have focussed on where our food comes from and food in season to enable our pupils to think about the impact of where our food travels from and what its source is.
Across the year groups we have been making dishes using fruit and vegetables in
season and talking about why it is healthier to eat food that is sourced locally. Year 7’s developed their preparation skills by working with different fruits and year 8 looked at where the ingredients in different breads came from.
Year 9 started their ‘Food around the World’ topic by making British dishes; some very tasty apple pies were created. They also looked at a variety of apples and where in the world they had travelled from to end up on our supermarket shelves. Year 10 kick started their Btec qualification with a visit to Goodwood Farm and Restaurant. They saw cows being milked and then where the milk was bottled. We also made some delicious butter from the milk and had a very tasty bread and butter snack
during the afternoon. We also visited the pigs and piglets, calves and cow herd and very narrowly missed a calf being born, which proved highly exciting! We were also lucky enough to visit the restaurant and meet the head chef of the Goodwood Hotel restaurant, who gave us a talk about where their ingredients are sourced from and we got to taste test some very delicious samples. We also saw the kitchen in action, as they prepared for their afternoon rush.
Last but not least, Year 11 visited Chichester Farmers’ market to look at and buy locally sourced foods and carried out a survey to find out exactly what products were available and
how much they cost. We then made some delicious biscotti with some of the eggs purchased.
Year 10 have been making
cheese on toast and focusing
on using the life skills room
safely and then serving their
friends too! It was delicious.
Year 11 visited Dunelm to
practise their
communication and
decision making as they
chose items they would
use to decorate their
rooms at home. We
wanted to buy it all!
This term pupils in Year 10 & 11
have been continuing to work
towards their Physical section of
the award by canoeing on
Chichester Canal.
They have worked as a team to
move the canoes through the
water and to go on journeys as
far as Hunston and back from
the basin in Chichester.
