Hi everyone, Second edition of the new mag already! I hope you enjoyed the first more than I enjoyed producing it. I never liked working with Word: no change there. We have an item about the Festival in this issue, a wonderful day I’m sure all of those who attended will agree. We’re back to the same venue next year, this time for the full weekend. There’s details of lots of training going on in the region and other workshops and events, hopefully there’ll be something that appeals. We had sad news recently of the death of one of our wonderful yoga friends and teachers. Some words in memory of Emma Evans can be found in the magazine.

REGIONALOFFICER’SREPORT

Hello everyone

I hope you all have had a good summer and enjoyed yourselves whatever you were doing.

I have to start on a very sad note: in July, Emma Evans passed away after a short battle with cancer. Emma was a much-respected teacher in the region as well as being county rep for Northumberland two years ago. She was a valued member of our committee, a colleague and a friend. Our loving thoughts are with her husband and daughters. Such a sad event teaches us that life is for living and loving well and we need to make the most of every day.

Our regional festival “Summer of Love” took place on a warm and sunny Sunday at the beginning of July. It was fully booked and the committee and I welcomed 122 yogis and yoginis from across the region and beyond. Elena Voyce was the keynote teacher, ably supported by Jessica Weise, Ruth Nichol, Robyn Creighton, Roy Moor, Steve Emmett, Pat Rathbone, Chrisy Edge and Lesley Wood, giving us an

eclectic set of sessions across many yoga styles. Elena’s sessions were deceptively easy but I really thought I’d never unknot my legs again as she wrapped them into a pose and pressed on my knees!

Thanks to everyone who responded with feedback. Overall, comments have been very favourable, with high levels of satisfaction for the teachers, venue and location. Some of the problems with booking should be overcome with the new website as this now includes a pay facility. Your comments have given us a number of things to think about for the future to improve the festival experience, but all those who responded acknowledged the hard work that goes into the organisation. I would like to record my thanks to everyone who helped on the day and in the lead-up to the festival and particularly Sue Harding-Smith who does all the organising: bullies teachers into teaching; pesters the keynote teacher; gets the venue sorted; and ensures we are all fed and watered, have things to buy and have a good day.

Reports Talking of the new website, you should have had a Membership Matters explaining that the website is up and running. You may have used it or tried to use it and experienced snags. If you have any problems please let me know as we are collating information to send to the software developers. You only need to log in once now to access the both the regional and central webpage and book onto regional events from any region. Teachers – can I remind you to check that your class information is correct?

The BWY have been working with Skills Active to develop National Occupational Standards for Yoga Teaching. A draft set of NOS is now available – a summary can be accessed on the BWY News Facebook page or in full through http://www.skillsactive.com/PDF/Draft_Yoga_Teacher_NOS_-_150617.pdf.

These standards (when finalised) will be compulsory for yoga teachers working in private gyms or local authority leisure centres but having

read them all the yoga teachers I know aspire to and do put these standards into practice wherever they teach.

By the time you read this it will be the countdown to Christmas and New Year (Yule or midwinter festival), so I wish you a happy and peaceful holiday however you choose to celebrate.

Namaste

CUMBRIAREPREPORT

North Cumbria –

South Cumbria – Hello All You may have noticed that for a while we’ve had a ‘blank’ regarding the Rep for the North of Cumbria. Well, breaking news . . . we now have Me – aka Alison Hobson! I live in the Brampton area and am looking forward to my role as your Representative. I have been practicing yoga for donkeys’ years in various locations throughout Lancashire, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders. I have just completed my first year of the Teaching Diploma, and will be starting my own classes very shortly.

RECENT EVENTS. We had a wonderful IST Day with Alison Hogy entitled ‘The Kinesiology of the Shoulder’ in March at Brigsteer Village Hall. Alison presented a good mix of physiology, student activities and relevant yoga practices, and made it fun! In April, in South Cumbria at Water Yeat Village Hall, we had another excellent Lesley Dike day when she gave us the second part of her workshop on the Thoracic and Cervical Spines. Also, Bill Wood, a yoga teacher influenced by the teachings of the late Scaravelli, delivered a two day workshop there in June. This was so well-received that Bill has kindly agreed to return and do a similar workshop on 14 and 15 July 2018.

FUTURE EVENTS. There will be an IST Day on Saturday 10 March 2018 at Brigsteer Village Hall when Anna Semlyen will be presenting Yoga and Mental Health – Balancing the Three Gunas. Some of us will remember her excellent day on Yoga and Back Pain held in Scotby. See the Events Calendar in this magazine for further details including information on booking.

Your two Cumbria Reps plan on working closely together to cover the whole of Cumbria, and would welcome any comments or suggestions for future events in our beautiful county.

Om Shanti, Gill and Alison

CLEVELANDREPREPORT

Helloyogafriends I hope you managed to enjoy the ‘summer’ and keep dry although there were one or two days that were sunny.

Thank you Marilyn Heginbotham for a fantastic IST Day in May: ‘Using Mudras and Bandhas for Inner Strength and Stillness’. Those who participated thoroughly enjoyed the day. I had forgotten just how powerful using mudras and bandhas together can be. The detailed handout Marilyn left with us will be a very useful reminder. It was good to see that when a participant spilled hot HOT soup on themselves at lunchtime the caring nature of the group ensured that they were looked after. Many thanks to off-duty semi-retired nurse Monica Clark who went above and beyond the call of duty to attend the patient. I think next year it will be salads only!!! (only joking)!

In May and June we had two students teachers teaching for us at Long Newton, both fantastic and well-attended sessions. May saw Andrea Cook deliver ‘Refining Awareness of the links between body and Breath’ and in June Jacqui Watson gave us ‘Love from the Inside Out’. There was excellent feedback for both sessions. Good luck ladies I know you both have a wonderful Yogic career ahead of you which will be worth all the hard work, essays, assignments and teaching practices.

A memorable session was delivered by Mari Keay in July: ‘Summer story time – how many yogic ideas and asanas can we find in an ancient Hindu tale’. I personally hadn’t been to a story telling session before. We had so much fun. Mari, a teacher for almost 20 years, kept us interested with a fantastic tale which incorporated many postures.

Our August session was just as illuminating when Marnie Sullivan’s topic was ‘Tuning into your Inner Child’. I was so busy participating I didn’t get chance to take a photo of us all taking part in the story of the ‘three little pigs’!

Take a look at ‘What’s On’ to make sure you don’t miss any future events. Everyone is welcome at The Wilson Centre. I hope to see you there soon. For photos of the events in Cleveland, see the Local Events pages.

DURHAMREPREPORT

Hello my Yogic friends We are so fortunate to live in such a wonderful island with so many places where we can be immersed in nature. Wherever you go, take your yoga with you and practice your Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana and Dhyana (posture, breathing, withdrawal, concentration and meditation) in all the seasons. By the time you get this copy of the magazine the new term will have started and I hope you are all enjoying your yoga once more with the teacher of your choice. Don’t forget that even if you are yourself a teacher it is refreshing to be taught as well. Take advantage as well of all the monthly groups in the region. We now have more details of the Regional AGM in November and you can find them later in the magazine. Colin and Sue Harding-Smith will be our teachers for the day and I am looking forward to the day with anticipation. There are still places available for the IST day and workshop in October. Details can be found later in the mag as well as online. Please get your bookings in as soon as possible; it makes the organisation easier. The new BWY website is up and running and I’m sure many of you will have already used it. For more details of how to book onto an event, see the booking details later in the magazine. All three of our County Durham based local groups (Darlington, Durham and Teesdale) continue to offer monthly yoga sessions which are enjoyed by all – for more details, see the local events pages later in the magazine. If you would like to see any particular teacher take a session at the Durham group, don’t hesitate to contact me. We have had two lovely summer sessions at Durham with Stewart Jones and Marian Keay. Such different sessions but both inspiring, imaginative and a wonderful use of a Saturday morning J I hope to see you soon at one of the many events available to you Om Shanti,

NORTHUMBERLANDREPREPORT

Hello again everyone,

Welcome to the Summer of 2017! It has been a bit changeable to say the least.

From a yogic point of view Summer is about change and, to cool off this summer, before you rush out for the day, try the Sheetali pranayama (the cooling breath).

1. Stick your tongue out and curl the sides upward towards the centre. 2. Inhale through the mouth, hold the breath, slowly exhale through the nose. 3. Repeat 5- 10 times and you will find your body temperature cooling down.

Summer sessions at Stannington.

Cristal Gaskin tutored the June workshop. Cristal regularly spends time in India studying yoga philosophy and most recently has been studying a therapeutic approach to yoga from a female perspective, allowing her to offer a more tailored approach to her classes, particularly pregnancy yoga. It was a lovely yoga class.

Lynn Moor, who has been teaching Dru yoga for 3 years, tutored our July`s workshop. Her philosophy is that the purpose of yoga is to be happy and that mindful movement enhances the quality of practice. Lynn`s theme was using the Dru Power Sequence to awaken the heart centre and generate Summer vitality. Lynn's session was full of movement and flow that filled the Village Hall with vibrant energy and we thoroughly enjoyed the energy.

Northumberland`s IST Day Sunday July 23rd with Alison Hogy, ‘Integrating Kinesiology into the Practice of Yoga’ (focusing on the shoulder) was excellent. The day was aimed at investigating the shoulder complex in as straightforward terms as possible looking at its anatomy and being able to adapt these principles to yoga practices. Alison expertly led us through the two joints, refreshing our memories effectively using her little tests.

TYNEANDWEARREPREPORT

Hi Yogis,

How quiet everything seems in August, with so much put on hold until September. Looking at my last report reminds me of how busy things were with our Gosforth Yoga events, IST day and, of course, the Festival.

The Festival was fully, indeed over-booked; we managed to squeeze in a couple of extra people who left their bookings until the last minute. Feedback from the Festival will be used to help us make improvements for next year. My general impression, however, was that it was a great success, despite some hitches with scones, a room whose entrance could not be found for at least half an hour and posters which would not stay on walls.

Bookings are starting to come in for our IST day on 4 March at St Cuthbert’s Hall, Blaydon when Marye Wyvill will be covering “Bones for Life”, looking at how teachers can integrate exercises designed to combat osteoporosis into their classes. I’m expecting places to go quickly, so book early to reserve a place. Don’t forget, you can no longer book on bwynorth.org.uk, you must book on bwy.org.uk.

I have to say a big thank you to Margaret Thornley who has helped to run the Tyne and Wear Yoga Group for as long as anyone can remember, from well before I became involved. She has now retired and will be sorely missed. However, she’ll be coming along to take part as often as she can. Since my last report, we have had great sessions from Anne Whitehead in June and Melissa Murphy in July. We’ve got teachers booked all the way up to December – see later in the magazine for details

In Memoriam

EMMAEVANS17th April 1975 – 23rd July 2017

Such sad news of our dear friend and yoga teacher, Emma Evans who passed over peacefully on July 23rd, aged only 42 years, after a short but brave battle against a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Emma was the beloved wife of Aled, much loved Mam of Carys and Gwen, devoted daughter of Martin and Pauline and a dear sister to all the family. A beautiful humanist service was held at Cowpen Crematorium, Blyth on the 31st July 2017 at 11.30 attended by many family, friends and colleagues.

Emma was very highly thought of in her professional life with Northumberland County Council, having single handedly brought about major transformations to the parks and green spaces within the county of Northumberland.

Emma loved life, people and all living things, and yoga. She began teaching yoga in 2009 and trained additionally in the module ‘Teaching Yoga to Children’. She was a very active Northumberland BWY rep organising workshops and IST days and many of you will have met Emma during your yoga journey.

Wheel North – Autumn 2017 12

In Memoriam

Emma loved ‘the empowerment that comes from yoga’. Matching yoga and mindfulness to develop awareness and acceptance, Emma encouraged students to make each practice their own, to experience enjoyment, appreciation and just the right amount of challenge.

Emma was someone who brightened up everyone`s day… she was always smiling….. We will miss her …..She is a shining star that we will always remember…..

We send her family and friends much love and comfort.

Gillian Gittins and Dawn Goodwill-Evans

I must pay a tribute to one of our young Northumberland teachers, Emma Evans, who died recently. There were BWY members at her funeral along with so many friends and family that there wasn’t enough room in the chapel, so that I with many others had to stand in the lobby. We could hear the beautiful humanist ceremony however at which the life of Emma was celebrated. Emma was married with two small children and was such a happy, lively person who was so enthusiastic about her yoga. She will be so sadly missed.

Sue Harding-Smith

Some years ago, I got to know Emma Evans well when we did the training on the BWY ‘Teaching Yoga to Children’ module together. She was a joy to know and brought her own special brand of childlikeness to the course; always ready to step up to ‘be a child’ in the course practices. No-one was more believably an enthusiastic child than was Emma, in the very best way possible. She truly loved yoga and was passionate about making it available to all to enable them to realise its benefits also. A true advocate of yoga, a true friend to all she knew and always hoping to meet and befriend those she didn’t. She will be sadly missed and our thoughts must be with her family and friends at this time.

BOOKREVIEW

Contributor: Gillian Gittins

Susan Lodge has published her second book in her series of yoga course planners for students and teachers. Following on from her excellent first book “Yama”, this book focuses on the 6th limb of Patanjali’s Astanga Yoga – Dharana (Concentration).

The book contains a full plan for a six week course of 90 minute practices including philosophical references, asanas, pranyama practices and relaxations - all clearly explained with good illustrations.

I particularly liked the references and quotes from a wide source of yogic texts supporting each session with straightforward explanations to bring the philosophy to life for students.

I used Susan’s first book with my classes and found it an invaluable resource. I really didn't think it could be improved on but this second book is even better, with detailed practices and suggestions for further research for students to do between classes. Priced at £12.99, this book is well worth the investment.

FESTIVALREPORT

“THESUMMEROFLOVE" CONTRIBUTOR:MARIANNAFISHER

As assistant rep to Carol Alderton, this was my very first Yoga Festival attendance. Usually we don't think about the hard work that goes into organising such an event; we just arrive, enjoy ourselves and go home. For this Festival, I have been fortunate to be involved behind the scenes. Chief organiser Sue Harding-Smith, supported by the committee members, worked tirelessly to ensure a fantastically organised and smooth running event. Each member had specific responsibilities beforehand and on the day of the festival. We arrived early to ensure everything was prepared. Sue, Colin and Jacqueline overseeing the setup and answering numerous questions. The other members attended to their duties: carpark attendant, reception and so on. There was such a buzz when Gillian Gittins opened the festival. I was able to attend my chosen sessions. Firstly, I went to Elena Voyce's class, the headline teacher. It was challenging, as the postures had to be precise and held for some time. My next choice was Robyn Creighton, her approach was fun and with her wiggling, one could stretch more easily. A good wiggle is always to be recommended (Ed.) Pat Rathbone's was my next class with " Go with the flow" a most enjoyable session. To finish off the event, I attended Lesley Wood's class, which was a relaxing and serene experience to conclude a most enjoyable day. In between all the Yoga, there were opportunities for retail therapy. From Jacqui's Aroma Namaste Skin Care, to Handbags, Jewellery and Yoga Equipment. Jacqueline's belts in aid of her charity, Lionmouth Centre, were very popular. Louwart, a local artist specialising in Yoga inspired art, brought a selection of beautiful pictures. I treated myself to a lovely OM print in different blue colours. The venue was very nice and we were treated to a wonderful vegetarian lunch. The Festival was a great success, the atmosphere was very friendly and supportive and I enjoyed it immensely. I am already looking forward to next year.

Overall aim To provide a fresh and simple way to understand the way we learn, act and interact as human beings. To highlight the extraordinary human capacity for learning and to explore how that ability influences how we inhabit our bodies and how we think and feel. This is an exploration of karma, psychology and anatomy all in one story About the Tutor Ade’s yoga story is centred around a daily ashtanga yoga practice begun in 2000 and involving many months working with Nancy Gilgoff on the mythical island of Maui. He has been sharing stories about yoga since 2004. Structure of the day A mix of tutor presentation, group discussion and practical work, both individual practice and group work. We will touch on topics as diverse as anatomy, psychology and philosophy, in a grounded and practical way using everyday examples to explore key themes. There will be space for laughter, music, poetry and storytelling, provoking reflection and providing inspiration for your practice and/or teaching. Aims and Objectives To introduce and explore the patterns and narratives that provide the basis both for how we understand the world and for the way we occupy our bodies. Students will be able to define and identify stories found in various aspects of life and to give examples of helpful, harmful and neutral stories in the context of body and mind. To review stories commonly found in yoga teaching/practice and consider their usefulness. Students will be able to describe examples of key stories used in the teaching and tradition of yoga and to identify examples of patterns and narratives arising in their own asana practice.

Structure of the day

A day accessible to all, not just for teachers!!! Come along and investigate your own body and how your asana works for you.

A practical exploration of different ways of thinking about the body in yoga asana, blending western anatomy, pancha kosha, the structural integration model of Ida Rolf (which aims to improve human biomechanical functioning as a whole rather than to treat particular symptoms) and some less orthodox ways of thinking about how the body works.

We will explore tools for understanding and facilitating exploration and change in asana.

A Kosha is a covering of the Atman (self) of which there are five in Vedantic philosophy:

1. Annamaya kosha, the food sheath. 2. Pranamaya kosha, the energy sheath 3. Manomaya kosha, the mind sheath 4. Vijnayanamaya kosha, the intellect sheath 5. Anandamaya kosha, the bliss sheath.

About the Tutor Ade’s yoga story is centred around a daily ashtanga yoga practice begun in 2000 and involving many months working with Nancy Gilgoff on the mythical island of Maui. He has been sharing stories about yoga since 2004.
